| Genesis are a funny bad. Their music has changed so much over the
years. Since Wind 'n weathering, I think they have not really produced
anything of worth. The "Invisible Touch" is probably their best since
Wind'n... but still not something I would buy. Although their tour,
which I did not get to see, was supposed be one of their best.

I was with a mate over the weekend, and we couldn't stop reeling
out all the names of the tracks on "Selling England", "Foxtrot"
('Watcher ....' is still great), "Nursery Chryme" and "Trespass"
(lovely stuff). This was a period when the band were taken to the
hearts of UK rock fans. They were pretty big by the time they hauled
"The Lamb ..." around the world, just over one hundred times - quite
something for a band in those days.
Theatrically, it's certainly one of the top there has *ever* been ....
lights and lasers seem to have taken over now. Yep, they still had
that underground / progressive feel about them then. I left them
when Gabriel did .... sure they made some great sounds in subsequent
albums, but it was different.
Fondly remembered.

I feel exactly the same about Genesis, something left them when
Gabriel quit - I think its this sense of 'overwhelmingness' that
can still be found in PGs music, its just an incredible emotional
thing that takes you somewhere else, difficult to describe.
Well do I remember rushing out to buy Trick of the Tail, and the
ensuing disappointment after playing it 2 or 3 times. I tried to
like it, but...... Ive felt the same about everything theyve done
since as well....(looking back, I think you can almost sense it
coming on The Lamb; they started moving away from their very 'English'
sound to a more polished techno production, this lp is like the
transition to post-Gabriel Genesis)
Did anyone else see them during their theatrical period? I saw them
many times during the Trespass/Nursery cryme/Foxtrot/Selling England
period - their presentation of Suppers Ready was completely
overwhelming.
The first time I saw them (pre Phil Collins) PG had to sit down
and play his bass drum with his good leg, the other being broken.
This was in a small sports hall in Potters Bar (!) the same day
Grand Funk Railroad and Humble Pie played Hyde Park. Genesis and
5 support bands all for 50p!!

Agree with you Bob - great views about times gone.
Ah yes, the Charisma tour packages - what great value for money
they were - think Van Der Graff and Lindisfarne also played on some
too.
"The Lamb ..." just started to break them in the US, but after PG
left, they became superatars over there. I still think it's good
that they play some of the old tunes now and again, although it's
about 10 years since I last saw them!!!! I do have "Seconds Out"
which I quite liked.

Yeah, I too really like Invisible Touch. I'm a real PC fan (except
his new one which I think is yuuuuuck) and it was a real (pleasant)
surprise. Its a real sort of uP aNd DoWn album. Some is of typical
Genesis sound, but different to what you would expect Phil Collins
to produce, and some is of real PC era, the sort that you would
never expect Genesis to come up with. Anyway the albums comes up
with the goods and, as we heavy metal fanatics say, kix serious
bum ;-)
BTW - fav track is 'Brazilian'.

Have heard the new Genesis Single "You're No Son Of Mine" on the radio.
Dave heard that the new album "We Won't Dance" will be released in Nov.
But I think that they do like to dance, as the single was more commercial
than Collins stuff. Oh good, what a band, and what a kind of dull music.
This album will be the first Genesis album, I'm not going to buy.

I think, that "One For The Vine", "Ripples", "Dodo", "The Battle Of The
Emping Forest" are typical Genesis Songs. No song since the "Genesis"
album is typical Genesis. Also the progressive "Home By The Sea" and
"Second Home By The Sea" are sounding too commercial.
Money makes the world goes round. I have seen them on their in the early
'80s. They did a great concert incl. "Supper's Ready" and a lot of other
classics. I saw them also (surely for the last time) on their "Invisible
Touch Tour". 60.000 people in the stadium. Not a kind of a "Genesis Gig".
More than Michael Jackson. Phil said: "Well, we're going to play some new
songs! And we're going to play some old songs." This was his first lie.
"The only typiclal old Genesis Songs, they did were: "Firth Of Fifth" and
"Los Endos". Genesis was not a pop band. But now they are.

213.32 | Sold out, or just evolved? | OZROCK::HUNT | Dead Chooks Society | Fri Nov 15 1991 01:38 | 36 |

I agree that their style has changed, but I don't think that
means they've sold out. Sure, "Genesis" and "Invisible Touch" are a far
cry from "Trick of the Tail" or "Duke". But then the rest of the industry
has changed a heckuva lot in those ten years.
They have become more commercialised - "Invisible Touch" (both the
album as a whole and the single especially) appealed to the mass market.
But "Domino", "The Brazilian" and the ballads still have some of the flavour
of the earlier style.
I really like their older stuff (post-Gabriel, I must admit), but
I think it would be boring if their style didn't change. I just think they've
evolved with the industry. And I still think their music is streets ahead
of most of what you hear on the radio. The rhythms, the structure of the music
are still original and inovative.
I don't think you can look at a band which has been changing so continuously,
and label one or two albums as being "typically Genesis".
I disagree with the comment that "No son of mine" is more commercial
than something Phil Collins would write. Any Phil Collins single from "..But
Seriously" is more mainstream, and musically "safe" than "No son of mine".
(As an aside, I liked ..But Seriously, and I like PC, but PC is not Genesis).
Musically speaking, NSOM does some pretty unusual things - no way could you
mistake it for Phil Collins.
This goes double for "Living forever" the other song on the MSOM single.
Written by Tony Banks, predominantly, IMO, and its style harks back to
"Wind and Wuthering" days - ends with a long instrumental dominated by
percussion and keyboards. I think "We Can't Dance" will be less commercialised
than "Invisible Touch" was.

If nobody else will say it, I will:
'We Can't Dance' is a great album! Never mind the few 'hit
songs' (which are actually not bad) on it, there's lot of
incredible power playing on it as well...I've been liste-
ning to Genesis for about 20 years now, and I'll say this
one is back to the old standard from 'A Trick Of The Tail'
(one of their absolute masterpieces, IMO). Just give it a
chance, if you really understand Genesis music, this one will
grow on you.
Track 3 (Driving The Spike?) is a heartbraking strong song
with *bleeding* bass lines. It took me a while to get used to
the mix, though, the bass is not recorded so clear as it was
years ago. But Mike is playing more now, than he did on the
last 3 albums. His guitar parts are also a great contribute
to the special Genesis sound, I think I really recognize it
on this recording. Tony Banks does some very fine keyboards
on the last track f.ex., and Phil Collins allows himself to
have a more 'live' sound on his drums (exactly what I like).
PLAY IT LOUD, folks! ;^)

I'm really getting to like We Can't Dance too. The diversity and quality
of the music is astounding. The first six songs on the album are completely
different in style and feel.
There's definitely a presence of the Genesis of 10 - 15 years ago. Poul,
you're exactly right when you say there's a song straight out of "Trick of the
Tail" ( I take it you were talking about "Fading Lights" ). This song has the
almost soulful sound of old, with a fabulous 4 minute instrumental dominated
by keyboard and drums. Another song, "Living Forever", has a similar feel.
There are some definite "singles" songs on the album, though. "Never a
Time" is a typical Genesis ballad, and will probably be the next single. There
are other songs which have a style popular enough to be singles, too.
But this album is a far cry from Invisible Touch. Some songs are
recognisably "recent" Genesis, and some are recognisably "older" Genesis,
but there are others which are a completely new sound for them. Don't worry;
they HAVEN'T jumped on the "dance mix" bandwagon - it's all quality music.
If you like Genesis, this album will really grow on you. If you liked
the Genesis of old, but have gone off them because of recent albums, give
"We Can't Dance" album a few listens - you'll be pleasantly surprised. If you
have never liked Genesis, there's nothing on this album to change you're mind,
because despite the diversity, it's still all Genesis.
