192.1 | Try these...... | ERIC::SALLITT | Dave @LZO | Thu Sep 08 1988 11:58 | 18 |
| For sax and blues/jazz, try Eddy "Cleanhead" Vinson. He recorded
(he died a few months ago) with various others and on several labels,
although I know Charly have some his work on LP (maybe CD) in his
own name, and sessioning with others.
Other jazz saxophonists worth buying without hearing first are Stan
Getz, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley to name but 3. These are
more jazz than blues. Coltrane and Adderley feature on Miles
Davis' "Kind of Blue" album and sleeve notes by Benny Green assure
you that the tracks have a blues structure, but it isn't obvious
blues, like, say, Muddy waters; "Kind of Blue" was recorded in the
60's but you wouldn't think so if you heard it, and music like "Blue
in Green" from this album should be available on the National Health.
Great stuff.

192.2 | Oh I forgot...... | ERIC::SALLITT | Dave @LZO | Thu Sep 08 1988 12:20 | 18 |
| .......you can get the Charly catalogue (full colour, track listings,
etc) for 1 inc. postage; get the address from any Charly record
sleeve or I can mail it to you if you can't find it. If you find
Charly hard to obtain locally (they don't do much chart stuff so
your average "Plebs Record Emporia" doesn't carry much Charly), they
do mail order.
You might also checkout Red Lick Records in Porthmadog (whose
address/phone no. escape me but again I can mail you if Directory
Enquiries can't help), they carry absolutely tons of blues, amongst
other stuff, on mail order only. Prices are reasonable, and the
staff are knowledgable enough to suggest somewhere to start. If
you're ever in COMET::RECORDS, there's a note on Red Lick in there.
Also checkout the Jazz conference on MTBLUE:: (hit KP7, etc.), you'll
probably get a more knowledgable answer there than mine....

Some I've got in the last year, and can highly recommend -
Richard Elliot - Trolltown (ex Tower of Power)
Tom Scott - Streamlines (ex L.A. Express)
Bob Berg - Short Stories
Michael Brecker - Michael Brecker (ex Brecker Bros)
the top 2 are more fusiony than the last 2.
and, if you're into Alto Sax, you cannot, simply cannot do without
Sydney Bechet (I like his French stuff best) - Platinum for S.B.

Add to these 'The Power of Suggestion', also by Elliot, they're

>" any one know of a true 100% "blues" sax lead/solo

I think you have problem there; as I see (hear?) it most blues is
vocal, with instrumental breaks, some of which feature sax. The
few instrumental blues tracks I've heard, the lead is usually guitar,
piano (or some other keyboard) or harmonica.
Very little jazz has one instrument leading all the way; even
"Cleanhead", in spite of being a sax lead, split it up with the
rest of the band(s). But he played the blues alright; slow, fast,
funky, sweet, take your pick. Check him out, you won't be
disappointed.

A new one on Saturday -
Eric Marienthal - 'Voices of the Heart' tremendipops
and since he plays Alto Sax, this brought home the glaring
booboo in .6, Sidney Bechet plays SOPRANO Sax, eek!
Another you could try is Barbara Thompson's Paraphenalia.

| Hi Mark - I know what you mean about work getting in the way, its
a bugger isnt it? I could quite happily 'groove to the sounds' all
day!
For a very blues oriented sax player, but still in the jazz area,
you might want to try Arnette (sp?) Cobb, but hes a bit raucous
perhaps. Try also any old stuff with Coleman Hawkins on it, he's
quite bluesy a lot of the time.
How was that Coltrane album, was it fairly straight or was it some
of his stranger playing? I love it all, but some of his later work
is definitely *not* easy listening (Ascension, for instance)
Good listening

I'll second that! Saw them live at Winchester a couple
of Sundays ago.... it was a completely 'blind tasting' cos
all I knew about them was Jon Hiseman (ex. Mayall, Colliseum?
etc)..... terrific.
Their latest album is called A Cry from the Heart (If my
memory serves me well) and has just been released. The title
track live was something else.
BTW Barbara plays a variety of saxophones and other bits!

I think it was called "Can you read between the lines" and that the name
was Joanie. A guy sings most of the song, the girlie just does the telephone
answering machine bit. Don't know who the band/singer is though, long before my

I'm wrong! They're two different (equally bad) songs. I think that the one we
want is called Joanie. Poor Joanie has been killed (in a car crash), but
singer doesn't know it yet. Sorry about the red herring.

I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me with this one.
A few months ago (maybe as far back as September?) I heard somebody
(think that it may have been that Nicky Campbell fella-this is getting
vaguer by the minute i know, but hang in there with me-please)on the radio
talking about and playing tracks from an album. This was a double album
which featured loads of different artists doing cover versions of Elvis
(Presley) songs and I'm sure it was called "The Last Temptations of
Elvis" or the like. He played Ian McCulloch doing "Return to Sender"
(Excellent it was too) and the Robert Cray band doing another.
I've asked for this at a few record shops (you know, once I'd
actually plucked up enough courage to ask for it- Why is it that you
always get the feeling everybody in record shops is in to buy something
a lot trendier than you are, and that you'll get laughed out of the
shop if anyone hears you saying it?) but none of them had ever heard of
it. I even remember him (the DJ)saying that the proceeds from the sales
of the record were going to the Lord somethingorother's music trust who
help handicapped children.
So now we come to the big question. Did I imagine all this or am I
not going completely off my tottie (yet)? Any help here would be
appreciated.
Cheers,
Johnny A.
