so much and I'm one of the moderators - I have a proposal.
We should have a (brief) competition to see the most hated
record of all time. However let's make life simple and rather
than including every record ever made let's restrict it to say
number ones from the last say ten years [fellow moderators ?]
I for one am keen to know the ten least favourite number ones.

That's interesting. In the U.S., Paper Lace recorded "Billy Don't Be A
Hero", but it only got to like #97 on the cahrts. Another group
(I can't remember who - Bo ??? and the Heywoods?) took "Billy Don't Be
A Hero" to #1 in the U.S.
BUT - revenge is sweet! Paper Lace had a #1 hit just a month later with
an even worse song - "The Night Chicago Died" !
Remember -
"Daddy was a cop,
On the East Side of Chicago
Back in the bad old days
Back in the USA"
What utter trash!!! 8^)

minds to HEAVY METAL. METALmusic is the drive, where regular
blas music merely follows.
Now don't get me wrong, since I can listen to the best of
Bach, Rachmaninov(sp) or (since I'm not in HM, I can say it
here) Country Western. (Read that METALheads ! :^)) Does that
mean I would gladly lump UK_MUSIC into the constant `Top-40'

This is probably the stuff that you call real music.
I love HEAVY METAL. I love most music. For God's sake, I have
the soundtrack to 2001; A SPACE ODYSSEY and listen to that every
once in a while. But make no mistake about it, I'd rather be
headbangin'. Heavy metal music is a kind of brotherhood/sisterhood.
It goes alot deeper than just a long haired adult male on stage
wailing some notes out on stage, and people out in the crowd going
crazy. Maybe thats something you fail to see or comprehend.
Shallowness is a disease. Maybe you should buy some classic
H_M tapes, like something from Zepplin and try LISTENING to it.

Doug made a very point, I too hate Heavy Metal. Although bands like
Deep Purple, Led Zeplin and some others of that era are most certainly
execptions in my book.
What I refer to as Heavy Metal are bands like Iron Maiden, Saxon
Def Lepard and other such tone deaf, moronic groups of individuals.
Whilst I would not critisize anyone who appreciated this loud, crash
bang cats chorus, I can only suggest they listen to it to enhance
their appreciation of real music.

I don't think that is a fair accusation. Yes, it's OK to say you don't like
Rick Astely. It's OK to say you don't like Heavy Metal also. That is
just part of being an individual. But comments like "I listen to REAL music"
can only offend the listeners of Heavy Metal music, and is so generalized
as to be ridiculous!

A REAL music fan, eh? To me a real music fan is someone
who can appreciate EVERYTHING about music. I'm the type
of person who can start off listening to Bach, put in
Chuck Berry (50's music), then put in Rick Astley, Lisa
Lisa, Inxs, Loudness, Krokus, Motley Crue, Sinead O'Connor,
Steve Winwood, and start over again with Bach.
So don't be so quick to say that everyone will shun off
Rick (sigh) Astley! Okey doke? (^8
And as far as HM is concerned, you're entitled to your
opinion, but it was rather close minded of you to not
even give it a chance.

minded enough to give them a listen first!

I heartily agree, and I'm sure you'll point out which of my
notes contained the offending quote.
Saying "I don't like HM" is no worse than saying "I don't like
Top 40 music" in fact it is LESS generalised, since ""Top 40"
covers a wider range (even the occasional HM song).
Yours in serenity,
Doug.

Personally I'm always ready to listen to Heavy Metal music.
Some of the best videos on MTV were from the HM vein. I grew
up with Heavy Metal and some 30 years down the road I still
give a listen to Deep Purple,Black Sabbath,Van Halen Led Zeppelin
etc.BTW there are many different types of HM some of which I like
and some I don't like just as I have likes/dislikes in New Wave,
Blues,Traditional Irish,Rock and Country Rock...
Looking back I kinda 'smile' at the platform shoes,bell-bottoms,
the long hair and the beard that never really got anywhere :-)
HM is still alive and its very hard to beat the athmosphere at
a live HM gig...good guitar playing, loads of energy and great
fun...
The person who earlier said that HM music was Moronic should take
a good look at the present *pop* charts. At least your average HM
fan can do an oil change on his bike how many YUPPIES can claim
the same with their Golf GTIs ??? ;-)

| RE: 174.87 and 174.88
Up until now, I have been just an observer of this conference, gleening
tid-bits of information and scuttle-butt. However, I feel VERY compelled
to make a comment or two (or three or four) at this time.
$ set flames/mode=high
People who are as narrow minded as you folks hve no place in music. As with
Mr. Edwards in an earlier note, I will not go into the "Everyone has their
opinion" ga-ga, I would just like to mention a few items of prejudice that I
can't keep to myself.
First of all, I should probably mention that I am the host/co-moderator
for the heavy_metal notes conference. I should also mention that I have
been a musician for most of my life. I've played different intruments in
Jazz bands, marching bands, The US Navy Drum and Bugle corps, concert bands,
and best of all I currently play lead guitar in a heavy metal band.
Probably the thing that irks me more than anything is your generalistic
attitudes; "Heavy Metal is just noise". Granted, some metal is low quality,
but certainly it does not speak for all metal bands. I think I've heard
"low quality symphonies" also, so it's not metal, but music right ? Gimme
a break !
I also get the impression that you probably feel heavy metal is meaningless,
and the artists are talentless. Making blanket statements like that bring on
the flames. I think that artists such as Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), George
Lynch (Dokken), Geoff Tate (Queensrche), Neil Peart (Rush), Tommy Skeotch
(Tesla) are as talented (if not more so) than any musician you can name; in any
"brand" of music.
Can you honestly say that the late, great Randy Rhodes just made noises on his
guitar ? I might inform you that Randy studied and taught classical guitar and
music theory. The man was no dummy; he was a musical genius. I feel that the
world lost a great man when he passed away. I think you'll find (if you can
bring yourself out of your little shells and have a listen) that a lot metal
band's music is straight out of the classical books.
Come on people, get with it ! This is 1988, not a time to be close minded !
Open up your ears and listen to the music, don't make uneducated, half-hearted
stabs at something you obviously know nothing about.
