Someone else has chosen to leave the fold (this Friday) and I think
a rousing send-off is in order.
45384::IBL (Ian!) will be leaving us and I want to wish him well,
even if he does listen to funny music ;-)

Hey, if I can just break into this seething mass of tearful mourners
for a moment......
Friends, DECies, fellow aficionados of "funny" music, even...I am
indeed departing for foreign climes (somewhere called "London", I
believe) and shall miss you greatly (but my aim is improving).
Actually, although I got "into" this conference rather late compared
to a lot of people, it's been one of the most rewarding. Ta muchly
for the good times, and since I'm lousy at making speeches I shall
now shut up.
Ian!
P.s. Of course, you still have to put up with me for two more days,
so don't break out the champers *just* yet......8^)

| An Electric Monk is an artificial believer in anything. They are
useful for when a salesman calls and tells you about "the greatest
financial opportunity of your life" or some similar such thing.
Their sole purpose in life is To Believe. Of course they look a
little lonely on their own, so they are put on horses (because horses
are cheap to make).
Now, if the Electric Monk goes wrong it may start believing random
things by mistake - such as that the entire world is pink, or that
tress are a fortnight tall. This can lead to long introspective
periods of reflection which, undestandably, the horse may find rather
boring.
Does that help?
Btw, if you think this is all rubbish, I would merely ask that IBL
confirm that it is, or is not, correct...
Tee hee hee!

Honestly, Sue. The Electric Monk is an invention of Douglas Adams,
and hails from his latest book, "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective
Agency". Keith, you're right, it isn't as good as HitchHiker by
any means, but some of the ideas and devices he uses in the story
are quite brilliant, even if the plot is a little, well, disjointed!
This book is an improvement compared to the final novel in the
HitchHiker trilogy ("So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish") though.
After I read that, I was somewhat convinced that DA had lost his
madcap appeal, and [the rest of this reply has been summarily obscured
as punishment for trying to write a literary review in a conference
about music. Thankyou, and goodnight]
