Smiths Triv...
A live Smiths album is due out next month sometime on Rough
Trade, supposedly containing a lot of previously unrecorded stuff.
Also, Mozzers releasing a second single of his solo album next week.
It's `Eveyday is like sunday'. I heard the b-side on the John
Peel show yesterday and it was pretty good.

What's the general view on Morrisey's exploits without his old
mucker, Mr. Marr. Although good, Viva Hate isn't a patch on
Strangeways. Did anyone see the South Bank Show on the lads,
very interesting stuff apart from the bloke who reckoned that
in ten years time we'd all think of The Smiths as The Beatles II.

It was strictly for the uninitiated. I preferred the one on the velvet

Confusion reigns....
The 12" of "Everyday Is Like Sunday" contains three tracks not on
the album "Viva Hate", namely "Sister I'm A Poet", "Disappointed",
and "Will Never Marry". This combination of songs contrives to be
an even better collection than the album itself, in my opinion. Has
anyone else thought the same thing? Why would he (Morrissey)keep the
best stuff for a single? It certainly puts "Viva Hate" a poor second.

You've just missed him! He played a gig in Wolverhampton last month
where the only admission fee was that you wore a Smiths T-shirt. They
also only let 2000 people into the hall. People had been queueing
outside for 3 days. Thousands were turned away and the rozzers were
called in to control the crowds. Inside things weren't much better,
everyone was leaping up onto stage trying to get to the miserable one.
He only played something like 7 songs, and he had 2 ex-Smiths plus 1
part-time Smith playing with him. The whole event was filmed for part
of the video of his new single, due out this month.
No further plans as far as I know of future dates though.

Marr - they are already recording a new album and will go under

album which will be out sometime after Mr. Morressy's second solo
album is released.
Johnny Marr, I have heard is working with Matt (the The) Johnson.

Those videos were unfortunatly not realised for sale. They were
recored for the '86 24 hour whistle test thing.
If you look around your town for your local indie store you may
find bootleg smiths videos with material recored from T.V. - Top
of the Pops appearences, Tube sessions etc. These sell for 10-15
pounds but it's best to ask to check the quality first.
The same question about videos was asked in N.M.E. a couple of months
ago...Rough Trades reply sounded like they may in the future release
a video of Smiths stuff.
In the early years of the Smiths it was there policy not to do videos
as part of their attempts at staying non-commercial.
I think the 4 previously mentioned videos were the first.

| Taken from the N.M.E. 13/9/89:
SMITHS TO REFORM?
Persistant rumours that THE SMITHS will re-form gained weight this
week with reports from Europe that the band are to tour there in
the New Year.
One French promoter who had been booking dates for a solo tour by
MORRISSEY in the Autumn has been told to scrap the plans because
The Smiths will travel there in early 1990.
Two independant sources contacted NME this week to confirm the rumours,
but there's been no official announcements of a reunion by the band,
who split up two years ago after more than a dozen hits.
And if The Smiths do play Europe, will they play dates in the UK?
A spokesman at Bandstand, who were brought in to promote Morrissey's
Wolverhampton show last December, told NME: 'There were stories
that Morrissey was going to play Europe, but not the UK. I haven't
heard anything about The Smiths touring, that's an interesting one.
'But there's been so much confusion in the past, following there
break-up that it's hard to tell who actually represents them.'
Certainly it would make commercial sense for The Smiths to get back
together and the lastest stories coming out of Manchester say that
Morrissey and Marr are back on speaking terms.
On top of the Smiths stories, however, comes another tale that
Morrissey will end his stint as a solo artist by headlining a Christmas
show at Manchester's GMEX.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the same issue:
Just when you thought is was safe to peer into your Morrissey free
express we bring you THE SMITHS NOT to reform part 901,276. Not
only did Morrissey NOT turn up for the wedding of Andy Rourke and
Maxine, but Rourke's best buddie Mike Joyce phones up on the morning
of the couples' nuptuals to say he wouldn't be fulfilling his
obligation as best man! But perhaps Andy has been a very, very,
naughty boy recently 'cos even his mum didn't turn up...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Make your own descisons...I'm gonna wait and see what happens...and
pray for some live dates.

see how it goes. There's nothing on the release schedule at present."
N.M.E. Understands that Morrissey has been in London working on

it was the relief after the disappointment of the first album.
There is a Smiths book, written by a guy named something like Muddle,
or somesuch. It isn't all that good, and Mozz doesn't like it.
not enough history, for instance it doesn't mention Mozz being
with the Nosebleeds (any bootlegs???), etc. We need to know more

was as a big a recluse as he likes to make out. He used to share

| Next Monday guys! Next Monday!!! Go out and get 'em boy - Every
format of Mozzers new single. 'Ouija Board. Ouija Board.'. Produced
by....Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley. Stephen Street co-wrote
the song.
The B-side is co-written by (can u dig it?) Andy Rourke (ex-Smiths)
and is called, 'Yes, I am blind.'
12"s and CD versions will have a cover of the Herman's Hermits song
'East West'.
The video sounds stunning with Joan Sims (From the Carry On films)
as a pshycic medium and Katy Burke of Comic Strip and 'Sid and Nancy'
fame. It is produced by Tim Broad.
Musicians on the single are Kevin Armstrong (guitar), Andrew Paresi
(Drums), Mathew Seligman (bass) and Steve Hopkins (drums).

'Ouija board, would you work for me?
I have got to say, 'hello!' to an old friend.
Ouija board, Ouija board, Ouija board, would you work for me?
I have got to get through, to a good friend.
Well, she has now gone, from this Earth, happy planet,
With all the carnivores and the destructors, on it!
Ouija board, Ouija board, Ouija board, would you help me?
Because I *STILL* do feel so *horribly* lonely.
Would youija board, would youija board, would you help me?
And I just can't find my place in this world.
Well, she has now gone, from this Earth, happy plant,
With all the carnivores and the destructors, on it!
Oh here my voice, here my voice, here my voice, *oh here my voice*...
THE TABLE IS RUMBLING!
The table is rumbling!
The glass is moving!
*No I was *not* pushing that time*!
It spelt - Ess - Tee - Eee - Vee - Eee - Ehn!
The table is rumbling!
The glass is moving!
*No I was *not* pushing that time*!
Pee - You - Ess - Haitch - Ohh - Double Eff!
Well, she has now gone, from this Earth, happy planet,
With all the carnivores and the destructors, on it!'
(Lyrics copywrite the greatest songwriter that ever lived (and E.M.I.))
(Reproduced without permission)
O.K. I think you can guess what I think of this single....4 miniutes
25 seconds of pure excellence! Excellent voice - just to here him
croon 'So horribly lonely' send little tingles down your spine! -,
Excellent music - probably the best Moz single musically (with
Everyday is like Sunday).
Packed full of charm, wit (Christ the wit of this guy is unbelivable!
How can anyone feel sad after hereing this song?!) and sensitivity.
When I finally figured out what the board was spelling I cracked
up - Oh typical Mozzer - and when the table started rumbling I nearly
wet myself! Typical? Yes and no...it's different.
Predictions on it chart placing anyone? PLEASE LET THIS BE No.1!
On the B-side 'Yes, I am blind.' is another good track. Quiter and
less wit Mozzer croons; 'There must be something, horribly wrong,
with me' because, he admits he can't see good things, just bad things.
Another excellent song.
East West is handled nicely too.
Go out and buy it! PLEASE!

So, do you think this girl he's trying to contact is the same one who
croaked in Girlfriend in a Coma? Just wondering.
I thought he was saying "unhappy planet", not "Earth, happy planet".
And a very ignorant question, but I don't get the reference to Steven.
Of course, I have also forgotten Morrissey's real name at the moment.
Would it, by any chance, happen to be Steven?
Duh.

Yes, I think you are right: it's "unhappy planet", not
"Earth, happy planet". BTW, I didn't get printed lyrics
with my U.S. CD single. Are the printed lyrics included
with the 12" vinyl or UK CD5?
Re: Morrissey's real name. It is indeed Steven Morrissey.
"Yes, I am Blind" is also a very good cut. I could have done
without the cover tune, though...
Well worth the wait, IMO.

| re .69 The 5th person was Craig Channon (or was it cannon) - something
like that anyway. Around the time of Queen is dead, Andy Rourke had a
heroin problem, and left the band, Craig was his replacement. Afer a
while, Andy came back, and Craig stayed on as backup Guitarist for the
Queen is dead tour. I believe he appears on the live album, and played
on Whistle Test appearances from that time. He left (!) after that
time.
Re .66 Weren't that band called The Nosebleeds, or somesuch? I don't
think any tapes exist.

In my opinion 'Your Arsenal' is the worst one of the four solo
albums so far. Some tracks are up to the usual Moz standard, but
the guitar on a lot of the other tracks would have sounded amateurish
way back in the seventies.
One track is supposed to be a 'Ride a White Swan' clone. I can't
really hear it myself, sounds more like the Beatles.
My personal message to Mozza is.....
Get rid of that guitarist !!!

| In a rare drone-a-thon mood the other day I listened to all four
Morrissey albums in a row, and boy are they bad (begs the question as
to why I had somehow _bought_ two of them). Dirge after dirge with the
wonderful wonderful highlights (Suedehead, Everyday is Like Sunday,
umm, err) being drowned out again and again by a man whining pitifully
for it all to end -- and Morrissey wasn't doing so well either.

85.89 | Johnny Marr Interview | LOOKIN::WOOD | Ay up, pies 'ave arrived | Thu Nov 18 1993 19:11 | 16 |
|
Just read a very good interview with Johnny Marr in the Decmeber
issue of 'Select' magazine, well worth a read if anybody's
interested. He's about to start work on a new Electronic album
with Barney Sumner. For all those who want The Smiths to reform,
he finally lays it to rest, mind you he didn't rule out teaming
up with Morrissey, just the name. The Smiths are dead, but
'Morrissey and Marr' is something that could possibly happen
when the time is right.
I agree with alot of the sentiment about Morrissey's solo
offerings, maybe that's due to the way they used to write.
In the interview, Marr says that he wrote the music first,
then gave it to Morrissey to write the lyrics.
