| While not as good as the two shows that border it, it is a good
filler for what would otherwise be dead time. I'm still hoping
they'll move Wings & Fraiser back to Thursday however .....
Is this Courtney Cox's first role since playing Alex's girlfriend
on Family Ties? Interesting to see Lisa whatever from Mad About
You in another role (she still plays a ditsy type character, but
not as ditsy as on the other show).
One of the dark haired male characters I remember from somewhere,
but I can't remember where. Does anyone know who I'm talking
about, and what I most likely remember him from (I seem to recall
it being a movie role, or am I getting him mixed up with Matt
Dillion?)?

episodes and then the father came in and was Al & Peggy's friend

The guy I remember more is the one who plays Courntey's brother. He
was on NYPD Blue for about 3 or 4 episodes until he was killed off.
Played a lawyer (I think) that lived in the same building as
Detective Kelly's ex-wife.

I'll put this behind a formfeed:
The last scene of the date was the one that you mentioned.
Monica and Rachel got called from the hospital cause a form
needed signing. They decided they couldn't handle the pressure
of what they had done, so when they got to the hospital Monica
(?? I can't remember which one is which now...the brunette played
by Courtney Cox) asked for another form since she filled it out
wrong....again...yes she's that stupid!! While there the guys
showed up with the monkey. He had swolled a Scrabble tile. The
nurse said they don't take animals. Doug and Carter showed up,
the girls acted screwed up about their names and Doug said he would
look at the monkey.
I wish I could remember the names...anyways, one of the guy friends
told the owner of the monkey that see, he'll make a great father,
he came through and was there when the monkey needed him. Then the
monkey woke up and grabbed the guys finger and held on tight...just
like the guys father told him he had done as a baby and that's when
he knew he was a father. You could see the look of love/realization
come over the guys face that he know knew what being a father was
going to feel like.
Phoebe/Ursula: Phoebe went to visit Ursula at the restaurant and
they excahnged birthday gifts (Ursula gave Phoebe the sweater the
Joey gave her.) They had a conversation about Joey and Ursuala
isn't planning on calling him to tell him it's over cause "he's
smart enough to figure it out". Phoebe pretends she's Ursula and
goes to the coffee house to tell Joey it's over. They end up
kissing and when Joey walks away he has a puzzled look on his
face. Phoebe falls back into the couch with a WOW expression.
Joey comes back and looks at Phoebe and says "Phoeb??" She says
"Yeh" and they just kinda smile at each other. They end up showing
up together at the hospital when they hear about the monkey.
I thing that's about it.

Poor Ross? I feel sorry for Rachel! She took a big emotional risk to
give Ross a chance; and through no fault of her own, is about to get
the wind taken out of her sails. That fade-out on her at the airport
with flowers was marvelous, and very poigniant.
Started watching this accidentally because it comes between Seinfeld
and ER; it's become our second favorite show (after ER). They have some
great zingers, though I missed the one about the leaf-blower:). Can
also relate well to the characters, especially the love of coffee.
I think those really big mugs are for cappacciono, which is diluted by
a lot of steamed milk and foam; so they aren't necessarily drinking
quite that much coffee. It's a good example, though, to show the coffee
shop as a fun alternative to hanging out in a bar.

the old grumpy guy who lives on the floor below Monica and Rachel
showed up (I think for the second time) in Star Trek:Voyager as a
holodeck character in a re-occurring program that's a re-creation of a
French bar/pool hall. His character is a pseudo-charming
professional(?) pool player who hits on the women.
Highlights from last week's show for me:
Beginnning scene when Carol starts to breastfeed the baby and the two
guys (not Ross) freak and quickly exit to the kitchen. Ross comes in
and berates them about their actions and tells them to ask Carol any
questions. After 2 reasonable questions Joey comes up with:
"if he (baby) blows in one, does the other get bigger?"
The whole scene between Monica and Rachel after Monica has gone
shopping with Julie, Ross's new girlfriend. for those who didn't see
it, it was scripted exactly like any "cheating husband confronted by
wife" scenes we've seen in movies/tv.Lines like - "it didn't mean
anything", "I was thinking of you the whole time", etc.
The scene between Joey and his roommate (can't think of name) after
Joey comes back from work, dressed in white satin cowboy cloths, from
spraying Hombre, (men's cologne) at his department store job, where the
whole scene is a takeoff of western bar scenes... especially the crack
about seeing Miss Kitty. I wonder how many outtakes they had sliding
the glass over a tile counter?
I usually tape this show, even if I'm watching it "live" just to review
the funny lines. Hope they can continue at this level!

| I loved the interplay between Phoebe and Ross in this last week's
episode concerning evolution! It took me a minute to remember what Ross
does for a living and why he'd be so determined to prove evolution to
Phebes.
favorite lines:
Phoebe, questioning gravity... "it's not so much I don't believe.
It's just that lately I get the feeling I'm not so much being pulled
down as I'm being pushed"
after the final argument when she's made Ross question his beliefs
and he's left. She turns to Monica and Rachael: "that was fun.... Anyone
hungry?"
Other great scenes/lines:
Opening scene - when the 3 main female characters are giving
Chandler a hard time for breaking up with yet another woman, reason
for this breakup: she had big nostrils. Joey jumps in and says he has
to agree with chandler. When he (joey) first came to the city he dated
a girl who was "really hot, great kisser" but she had a big adam's
apple. then, he thinks they are kidding him, when he's told "women
don't have adam's apples".
"because she doesn't hate Yanni is not a real reason"
the whole scene with Chandler and janice at the coffee shop...
"and what, miss the expression on your face?"
good show as always....

305.61 | rerun of early episode? | GRANPA::JBOBB | Janet Bobb dtn:339-5755 | Fri Nov 03 1995 11:28 | 21 |
| Last week (10/26) while the networks were running re-runs, NBC showed
what I assumed was a repeat of a very early Friends episode.
General plot: Ross finds out that he's going to be a father (the same
kid that was born at the end of last season) and spends the rest of the
episode dealing with that. There's a scene at the doctor's for the
first sonagram, with Carol, Susan and Ross. Rachel has been asked to
give her engagement ring back to Barry, because he wants to give it to
Mindy (Monica finds out Mindy and Barry went on what would have been
Rachel/barry's honeymoon). Monica hosts dinner for their parents and is
freaked about it, as her mother is so critical. Ross's parents find out
about Carol and her life partner at the dinner. And the actor playing
Carol is different than the one we have been seeing.
Was this the first show or somewhere near the beginning of the
series? It was good but it didn't seem like a "first show" as there
were lots of plot threads that without prior knowledge, could have
gotten the viewer lost.

Rachael walked out of her wedding, Ross split up with his wife, and their
romantic non-romance began. Or something like that.

Yes, it was a repeat. The showed this season's opener again.
But I caught a couple more retorts that I missed the 1st time

Ross, just back from overseas: "Well, I gotta get some sleep.
It's like 6PM our time now".
Chandler [of course]: Well, just don't tell me what happens.

Geez, I don't know. Maybe it has something to do with the

FWIW, looks like they are advertising at least a new Friends and
a new Seinfeld (not sure about TSG and CITC) for this Thursday, a
new MAY and NR this coming Sunday, and new Wings & I believe
a new Fraiser next Tuesday (and of course the series premiere

| Repeats during the holidays seems to be a very common practice now.
Most of the shows I usually watch seemed to go into "holiday hiatus"
this year, and it was all the channels.
But, even the repeat shows were funny.
Also - for Christmas I was given a "Friends" cookbook. If I remember
correctly, it is put by a chef who's related to the show and some food
editor. There is lots of narratives about the episodes and each page
has at least one quote from a character (best part of the book). There
is some bio info on the main cast. Most of the recipes have something
to do with an episode, though some are "Gee, if they were going to eat
this dish, this is probably how Monica would prepare it...."
It's a fun read. Haven't tried any of the recipes yet, though. And, I
found some episodes I don't think I have seen!

| What was the story? pretty much what .-1 said. I'll put more details
behind a new page/form feed. Describing it, it didn't seem as bad, but
watching it, it just seemed like almost every scene had to deal with
sex.
Question: how many people believe Tom Selleck would fit into Monica's
bathrobe? And why aren't Ross and Rachel using Ross's apartment? He
doesn't have a roommate (of course, then the story wouldn't work)
TV guide this week indicates a new episode, with Chandler and the new
roommate.
And .-1 is right, they did make the point about either having protected
sex or no sex. And the Tom Selleck character (why I can't remember his
name is beyond me...) was an example of not sleeping around. So some
redeeming content could be squeezed out of this. Guess I've just been
watching this with a "different view" lately, as during January, my
rather conservative mother-in-law was visiting and we watched this. And
she made the comment that my nieces watch this show (8yrs. & 5yrs) Now,
I keep seeing it with that in mind.
Still - funny episode and funny show.
janetb.
there be possible spoilers....
Three storylines in the show.
1. Sex topic (the one that surprised me)
While at the coffee house, Phoebe makes a speech saying "how of all the
guys Monaca has been with and believe me, that's been alot, you're
(meaning the tom Selleck character) the nicest". This starts a
conversation between him and Monica about "how many" have there been.
she's reluctant to tell him, so she asks him how many he's been with.
answer - 2. His ex-wife and Monica. When she asks how is that possible
"have you looked at yourself?" he answers that he married his high
school sweetheart, was married to her 30 years and now there's Monica.
She still tries to avoid the answer. He's says he doesn't need an exact
number, just a ballpark. She answers by saying "it's definately less
than a ballpark. Adjourn to bedroom. next time we see them she's told
him the answer (we don't find out what it is) and he's saying the
number is lower than what he would have guessed with all her reluctance
to tell him. and, he's not bothered by it at all. she questions him
about sowing his oats and hence the question, "am I an oat?". He then
says he only sleeps with people he loves. Monica than admits she loves
him too.
In the mean time, Rachal and Ross have retired to her bedroom, with
Rachel saying she doesn't envy monica right now. Ross asks what
Rachael's "magic number" is. She names about 4, with the last being
Paulo. Ross makes some comment and rachel, trying to make him feel
better, says it was only animal sex between her and Paulo. Which
bothers Ross to no end. she tells him with him it's tender and
meaningful. He asks if there isn't even a little animal sex with them,
"not even chipmunk sex?" It takes her a while to convince him.
Next scene has Monica and Rachel, both in the bathroom, scrambling for
something in a drawer, which turns out to be the box of condoms. But
there is only 1 left. They then argue over who gets it. (funny line
here where Rachel promises Monica she'll clean the apartment for 2
months, if she can have the condom, Monica responds that "you can have
it now, if you can tell me where we keep the dustpan". she can't.
Eventually they use rock/paper/scissors. Rachel wins. Meantime, both
guys have come out of the bedrooms, very anxious/eager, and end up
making small talk with each other. Rachel grabs Ross and they disappear
into the bedroom. When asked to go into the other bedroom Monica says
to .....(selleck) "They're having sex tonight. Tomorrow we can have
sex". Scene ends with him making a comment about "if there's some type
of schedule, can I at least see it first?"
Very last scene of show has both guys coming in/out of the bathroom,
wearing female bathrobes, you assume getting condoms. They try doing
small talk again and then decide "never to mention this again"
side comment: at this point, you'd think they'd keep a supply in the
bedrooms....
other stories:
1. Joey and Days of our Lives
Show opens with the gang watching the current episode of Days of our
Lives (Joey's character confessing he's the half brother of a female
character), then Joey gives them the run down of what's to happen - his
character wins a medical award and then they (joey and 1/2 sister) go
to south america, join up with another half-brother and Joey's to find
the world's biggest emerald (but it has a curse). So - Joey is doing well
on DoOL's and is excited. However, he then gives an interview in Soap
Opera digest and mentions he writes a lot of his own lines. Phoebe
questions whether the writers would be bothered by that line and Joey
can't see why "the interview makes him look good, which makes the show
look good, which makes the writers look good". However, the writer(s)
don't see it like that and have his character fall down an elevator
shaft and die. Joey's very depressed and the gang tries to cheer him
up, but not too successful.
2. Chandler and his roommate (can't remember the character name)
Phoebe convinces Chandler to spend more time with his roommate, after
chandler complains the guy spends all his time in his bedroom. The 2
guys talk and roommate talks about his girlfriend who dumped him "like
she reached into my chest and pulled out my heart and I'm falling into
a deep dark abyss with no way out". Story scares chandler. Next day the
girl friend drops off an empty fishtank. Roomie isn't home. She and
chandler start talking when roomie shows up. Ex-Girlfriend leaves.
Roomie accuses chandler of having sex with ex-girlfriend and, since the
tank is empty - killing his fish. Chandler denies everything "but
that's just what someone would say, if he did sleep with her". Later,
chandler comes home, roomie offers cookies. When chandler asks "are
these raisens?" response is "uh sure, whatever you say", Chandler flips
cookie across room while roommate isn't looking. Roommate shows off new
fish, which he's named Chandler. fish is a Goldfish cracker - chandler
escapes to his bedroom. Other than complaining to the others, nothing
is resolved.

Friends was never intended to be an 8PM TV show. Originally it ran later and
at one point I believe it ran as late as 9:30 but this season NBC decided to
move it to 8PM for scheduling reasons. Same thing with Mad About You on Sunday
night at 8.
In any case as people have said, they take a conservative point of view on
the topic of romance, always preaching monogamy and safe sex.

because the twin would have been there. Somehow I doubt that Urslia went to a

Most likely the writers didn't think Feebe through all that carefully. In
some ways she seems almost like a surrealistic type of character. She has no
job, she has no place to live, she has no life to speak of, maybe she's not
suppose to make any sense.

This is a "sitcom", not a docu-drama :-) We've already gotta suspend
some dis-belief in the first place to believe the characters can
afford the apartments they live in (in NYC) ...

| There seems to be a gap in the story line and College may well be it.
When they talk about Monica, Ross, and Rachels background it usually seems
like they are talking about highschool (Proms and the like). On the other hand
it appears that the characters are suppose to be mid to late 20's at present.
That does leave a gap of about 8 years that they don't talk about very much.

It's amazing how many people complain about the price of their apartments.
It's actually kind of funny. No doubt it's has to do with most TV critics
coming from New York and being in a wage bracket where getting that type of
apartment is a problem.
Yes, I don't think anyone argues that you have to suspend belief but we were
just curious as to where the friends came together in the story line so we were
talking it over. No doubt they have really fine apartments for people with
their salary and no doubt that matters only to those people who actually live
on the west side of Manhattan.

2.06 How did they all meet?
JG: "O.K., here's the quasi-definitive answer as I know it, as we
writer folk have discussed it over the course of the season...
"In the pilot, we established that Monica, Rachel and Ross all went to
Lincoln High School together. Monica was fat; Rachel was popular and
possibly bitchy; Ross was a nerd. Rachel says that she and Monica were
close, but in the time since, they've drifted -- enough so that Rachel
didn't think to invite Monica to her wedding."
"We also established that Ross had a crush on Rachel back then; she
knew this, but thought of him as 'Monica's geeky older brother.'
"During the making of 'The One Where Nana Dies Twice' [108], Schwimmer
and Perry wondered if Chandler and Ross might have gone to college
together. We writers agreed that it might be nice for two of our other
characters to have a history together, so we wrote it in.
"Therefore, my guess is that when Monica graduated college and was
looking for an apartment, Chandler (who was living with his first
roommate Kip -- the one Joey is jealous of in 'Dozen Lasagnas' [112])
alerted her to the fact that an apartment was opening up across the hall
from him. Monica found Phoebe through a roommate-matching service and moved
in.
"One of the ways we've justified -- to ourselves, at least -- this
amazing place Monica lives in (on an assistant chef's salary!) is that
it's probably an illegal sublet. Several plot lines revolving around
this fact were discussed over the course of the season, but never
amounted to anything.
"Anywaaaaaay... When Kip got married, he moved out and Joey (who
Chandler probably also met through a roommate-matching service, or by
putting up flyers at the laundromat) moved in. Around the same time,
Phoebe's grandmother needed some kind of taking care of, so Phoebe
moved out of Monica's to live with her. This is another element we
talked about a lot over the course of the season, but it never found
its way into a story.
"As for the timing of the events surrounding Ross's divorce, that's
something we've consciously avoided getting into. The more you think
about it, the more troublesome it becomes: Was Carol
already involved with Susan when Ross got her pregnant? We invite
viewers to figure this one out for themselves..."

I understood. But my comment about it being a sitcom and not
a docu-drama was in direct response to your comment about the
writers apparent lack of thought in creating Phobes character.
Ie. I don't expect to know the same type of details about the
characters, etc, as I would for a documentary. In fact the
lack of details in a sitcom can be even funnier than knowing
everything, such is the case with Seinfeld's Kramer who I still
believe we do not know how he supports himself (and neither does
Jerry apparently).
FWIW, David Schwimmer was on Letterman last night and said they
wrapped up for the season last week. No mention however of how
many un-aired episodes are left to finish the season...

Yes, I'm sure that in addition to New York Critics with a bone to pick there
are people who live in New York who also have nothing better to do than gripe
about than sit-com apartment prices.
At any rate it appears that the writers have thought these things through

Who said anything about griping? Don't assume that just because
one discusses something that they are complaining/griping about it.
You didn't hear me accusing you of griping because you thought they

Which is exactly my original point when I disagreed with your
assessment of the writing. Ie. they may of thought it out, but
there is no overwhelming need to force all that info into the
script strickly for completness sake, and gives them the flexibility
to change facts that haven't already been commited (assuming they
aren't like some shows where continuity with facts disclosed in
previous episodes is not very important, or is shoddy).

You must of missed the earlier episode when Marlo 1st played
Rachel's mom (which is the episode when Rachel's mom 1st told

The real real reason Marlo is moonlighting is not because of

Most of the films that did better were *not* in their opening
weekend. Exception to the rule are films that are sleepers, but
only time can tell and those are relatively rare so don't hold
your breath :-)

Given there are six (6) stars in this series, and everyone except
for what's her name (who plays Monica) was a relative nobody before
the series, my guess is that relatively speaking, they don't have
plenty of money.
> Shelly Long may be compared to Kirstie Alley, who stuck with

Kirstie Alley got what she really wanted, ie. ex-Hardy Boys husband :-)
> What's the diff? Credit to the restless ones I think.
As the previous noter indicates, the difference is a "steady" good
paying job. Given they only work like half the year or so on
the series, there is still plenty of time in the year to work
on other interests (such as movies).
They are certainly free to do what they want (baring contractual
obligations), but I personally wouldn't give credit to any
Friends cast member leaving while the show is still so early
in it's life cycle (it's not like "Wings" or "Seinfeld" :-)

To go back to a previous noter, the original Star Trek cast had steady
good-paying jobs. Most of them struggled to get another role in
anything. What success did McLean Stevenson and Gary Burghoff have
after they left M*A*S*H? Steady jobs on television can typecast an
actor, and they might never recover. Sticking with a show and getting a
few extra dollars but never working again is no better than leaving it
and never working again. We also never really know why anyone leaves,
anyway.

> Please try to contain your blatant sexism.
And please try to contain your blatant BS. Most women are *more*
sexist than I am (possibly yourself included if you actually
knew me). I contend you are a sexist to even infer that my
statement is sexist. The statement is no more sexist than if
you replaced "Kirstie Alley" with a male actor in that statement.
And putting your unjustified infered sexism aside, the statement
about Alley is also true. Alley has said the equiv. after she
won some award (probably Best Actress for "Cheers"??).
If someone goes in with a mindset of seeing sexism, they'll find
it (just as they found so-call communists everywhere during the
red scare). If I was looking for sexism against males in my
exact same statement, I could claim to find it in the fact
that I never even refered to Alley's husband by name, but as
"husband", as if he was nothing more than that. (it may sound
ridiculous if one had a mindset that sexism only applies when
it's against women, but it is indeed considered sexism these
days when one refers to a women only as "so-and-so's wife")
If you want real examples of blatant sexism, the majority of
single women still expect "the man" to ask them out, and
alot of them still expect the male to pick up the tab (though
at least fewer women these days expect to have doors opened
for them by men). Other examples are women who expect the
male to shovel the drive-way, mow the lawn, etc.
>> As the previous noter indicates, the difference is a "steady" good

> Steady jobs on television can typecast an

Typecasting of TV actors is overrated. Yes, there are some cases
of it (ex. the guy who played "Greg Brady", Lenord Nimoy as "Spock"),
but given the number of roles/actors over time, such typecasting
is relatively rare.
And tying this back into this "Friends" topic, this is an ensamble
cast where I personally don't see any of these characters being
"typecastable".
And for the few actors that do get (or had been) typecast in a
specific role, that's not not always a bad thing either. While
I don't consider Kelsey Grammer typecasted as "Fraiser" when
he was on "Cheers", some may, and that's worked to his advantage.
And by keeping himself in the spotlight (with a steady popular
TV series) he's been able to do other work that I conjecture would
not of been available to him otherwise).
> Sticking with a show and getting a
> few extra dollars but never working again is no better than leaving it
> and never working again.
How do you know it's only a "few extra dollars"? And you completely
ignored the point that today, unlike yester-year, the cross-over
between TV and Movies happens all the time (in the past the problem
was the Hollywood "studio" system, etc). Ie. you can have a steady
job on a TV series, and due to the short seasons (22 episodes, vs.
the 30+ of yester-year), can pursue other projects the other half
of the year (such as Movies, while some try the stage, etc), plus
these days it's also getting more common for an actor on a series
to write and/or direct episodes of the series (and as the inside
joke goes, every actor wants to be a director [and every director
wants to be an actor]).
> We also never really know why anyone leaves, anyway.
While there is some truth in that (and the same goes for alot of
things in our society), it's not completely true. "Salary" often
comes up, as does "creative differences" (which we often hear
about in movies).

Bingo. No matter which way you cut it, whether it's regarding a wife or
husband, it's sexist. Thanks for your clarification.

I didn't ignore an obvious point. Crossing over doesn't always mean
success, especially from television to movies. Is it that we don't like
to see our favorite weekly actors shun our favorite characters for what
they perceive to be bigger and better ones on the screen? Is the big
screen inherently better?
Back to the topic of Friends, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and
especially Lisa Kudrow all stand a chance of being typecast. And so
does the Ugly Naked Guy.

| > Bingo. No matter which way you cut it, whether it's regarding a wife or
> husband, it's sexist. Thanks for your clarification.
I may of clarified something for you, but you've left something
un-clarified in regards to your remark. Given the context I
had been under the impression that the part of the following ...
>> Kirstie Alley got what she really wanted, ie. ex-Hardy Boys husband :-)
... that you were calling "blatant sexism" was the fact (as stated
by Alley herself) that she got what she wanted, ie. her actor
husband). Are you saying that what you were refering to as "blatant
sexism" is the fact that I refered to her husband as her "husband"
and not by his name? If so, then I have an excuse for refering
to him as "ex-Hardy Boys husband", and that's because I couldn't
recall his name, and couldn't til it just reached my tounge now,
I believe his name is Parker Stevenson). In any case, you'll have
to elaborate (clarify) your un-justified use of "blatant" (which
I claim it is not). I will agree, as I even stated, that refering
to someone simply as so-and-so's wife/husband can be considered
sexist, it doesn't apply here. Me still thinks you wouldn't of
insulted me with that "blatant sexism" remark had I instead said:
Parker Stevenson got what he really wanted, ie. ex-Cheers star wife :-)
but you are learning :-)
> Is it that we don't like
> to see our favorite weekly actors shun our favorite characters for what
> they perceive to be bigger and better ones on the screen?
I can't speak for anyone else, but the reason I would prefer my
favorite TV characters to not shun (ie. leave the series) is
for just that reason, they are my favorite TV characters. Or
important enough to the strength of a favorite show, that by
leaving the series I'm afraid will disrupt my viewing pleasure.
With a show like Friends where there are six (6) main characters
I believe it would be less disruptive to me if one left the show,
than say if George left Seinfeld, or even worse, Jamie or Paul
left MAY.
> Is the big screen inherently better?
"inherent" in this context is a little ambiguous, but assuming
you mean better in the context of personal furfulment for the
actor, then I'd have to answer no to that question (neither is
better, but it's subjective to the person involved). From the
perspective of ones wallet, I'd have to answer yes, that the big
screen is better (though riskier).
> Back to the topic of Friends, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and
> especially Lisa Kudrow all stand a chance of being typecast.
We all stand a chance of being typecast (no doubt you've already
typecast me :-). An actor never knows what character will "stick"
to them, which will result in casting agents refusing to cast them
in un-similiar roles. And the risk isn't necessarily related to
the longevity of a TV series, it can happen with a single Movie
(hence leaving a TV series to prevent being typecast is kind of
like jumping out of frying pan to prevent being burnt).
A more likely reason to leave a successful TV series to pursue
a straight movie career are the reason we've already talked
about (creative differences, salary, etc), and also things
like being just plain bored and wanting to move on (but this
usually happens farther into the life cycle of a series from
the times I've seen this quoted as a reason).
> And so does the Ugly Naked Guy.
Now I think you're putting me on!? (if not, then please elaborate,
as I'd be curious how he could be typecast, since I don't recall
we've ever seen this off-screen characters face, or even his voice
[making him truely off-screen :-]))

another cast of friends with the same or distinct kind of writing and
re-create a new "Friends".
But the point made on the show, was that the production company will

| No, 100 grand isn't a lot in hit TV land. And you have to remember, as
these actors do, that even a show like "Friends" is subject to cancel-
lation for any number of reasons. Hollywood truly is a "make it all
while you can" type of business.
I strongly disagree with the point about writing making the show and
you can plug in another cast and still have the same level. The
writing here is exceptional, no question. But the ensemble is as
magical as Cheers, Barney Miller, Taxi, WKRP, MASH, Mary Tyler Moore
and Dick Van Dyke Show. That's a short list for over 40 years of
sitcom TV. Writing counts (all of those shows won countless EMMY
awards for scripts) but the cast is what makes it MEMORABLE!
Just look at The Single Guy. The writing is as good as Friends. Heck,
it even has some of the same writers. But the ensemble just doesn't
mesh. Okay, it would mesh if they dumped Silverman, but they won't and
it doesn't. There have been others. Hooperman was an outstanding show
from a writer's perspective, but the cast never dominated a scene.
Keep in mind, the vast, overwhelming majority of viewers think an
allusion is what Doug Henning is famous for. They don't know and don't
care one iota about good writing. But they DO know when Jennifer
Anniston changes her hairstyle.
Bottom line, pay them what they want and get back to making good TV and
plenty o' cash!

| I was really surprised to hear how little they were making. I seem to
remember that Martin Landau was fired from Mission Impossible over 20 years
ago because he was asking for that same $100,000 per show.
At $100,000 per show they would be making about $2.5 million which is a
decent but not that spectacular salary in baseball. And today there was a rumor
that the L.A. Lakers had upped the offer to Shaq O'Neil to about $140,000,000
for a multi year contract that seems to be less than 10 years.
I think Ophra makes something like $40 million per year and Speilberg tops
the list at $150 million per year.
$2.5 million for a hit series? If a baseball team offered that to a pitcher
with a 10-8 record and a 3.50 ERA he'd take them to arbitration and he'd
probably win.

305.192 | funny show - as usual | GRANPA::JBOBB | Janet Bobb dtn:339-5755 | Fri Aug 23 1996 14:03 | 18 |
| Last night's episode (8/22) was one I must have missed the first time
around - plot themes:
- Monica down to her last $127 and tries playing the stock market after
seeing a stock with her initials go up several points
- Phoebe decides to see her Dad, chickens out again, injures the
family dog by mistake
- Ross and Chandler are driven out of the coffer shop by two tough
guys
Pretty funny lines as usual, a few others which surprized the heck out
of me for getting on TV. End scene - where Monica has taken a job as a
cook in a 50's theme resturant, where they have to dress in "50's"
outfits and dance on the main counter when someone plays music - the
gang comes to eat and chandler drops a large pocketful of change on the
table - was great!
looking forward to the new season.

Well he was indeed back on the show, but it appeared to be a
shorter stint this time.
So Rozz & Rachael finally broke up. Certainly took the writers
a long time to do that. Gotta get back to the show's roots :-)
The woman Rozz slept with is better looking than Rachael anyways,
Rozz should explore that possibility .....

Good catch. Rozz is Fraiser's producer, and is a woman.
Maybe I was subconciously hoping Rozz & Rachael had been
dating :-) Though that relationship wouldn't have lasted
long being bi-coastal (Rozz in Seattle, and Rachael in NYC).

| Well, so do I. I frankly don't believe that Ross would have actually
have slept with another woman on the same day that he was hoping to
have a nice anniversary dinner with Rachael. I doubt even the writers
really believe it; notice that they didn't try to show anything between
some deep kissing on a dance floor to the point where copy-girl walks
out of his shower.
Taking that as a given, though, Rachael certainly isn't going to take
him back immediately. Still, I expect they'll be back together after a
few episodes. My prediction is that Ross asks her to marry him in the
season closer; 75% chance that she'll say yes; 40% chance that they
will make us wait until next season to hear her answer.
btw, could some kind person post a synopsis of last week's episode? I
gather from the previews that Chandler was going a bit gaga for
Rachael... well, who can blame him?

| Larry King had the entire cast on about a week ago. He asked Jennifer Aniston
and David Schwimmer several times if Ross and Rachael would get back together.
Each time they said the same thing, they have to wait to see what the writers
decide just like the rest of us. From the way they said it you could tell they
were tired of answering that question but were trying to stay polite.
King asked them if they wanted Ross and Rachael to get back together again
and they seemed pretty noncommittal. What ever the writers want ...
He asked them each if they would personally be attracted to the characters
Ross and Rachael. David Schwimmer said he wouldn't be attracted to Rachael
because he likes women who have some idea where they are going and Rachael
didn't seem to have any direction. Jennifer Aniston said she would be attracted
to Ross because he reminded her of her old high school boy friend.
In general the cast all seemed to feel that they would stay with Friends as
long as it lasted. When some caller asked which episodes they liked the best
the consensus seemed to be that they liked the ones where they were all working
on a scene together.
From what they say they come across like a pretty tight group. Just looking
at reactions it seems that most of them really are happy with the show and
would hang on to the end but Matt LeBlanc sounded more like he was repeating
a party line.
My guess is that if one of them leaves, it will be him. Nothing he said in
particular, just a feeling that he's this show's Adam Cartwright and will be
the 1st to say he's tired of the togetherness like Pernell Roberts did with
Bonanza.

| End of last show I saw. Not one of their best:
SPOILER
Feebe was trying to pick between the teacher and the fireman. They both
showed up at Central Perk while she was singing. She told them that she was
dating them both. It slipped out that she had slept with the fireman which the
teacher didn't like but she reminded him that she had done a candle light
dinner with him in the park. He got mad and left. The fireman then got mad
because she had been reckless with an open fire in the park and he left. She
seemed sad but not crushed.
Pete told Monica he had a surprise but it wasn't a marriage proposal. Instead
he wants to be the ultimate fighting champion (that thing that's illegal in 49
states). She seemed pretty crushed.
I think the duck was involved with the ending but I can't remember exactly
what happened.

I finally got a chance to watch the tape last night...
Chandler and Joey took the duck to Phoebe's herbalist guru (the same
one who accidentally removed Ross' whatzit with his watch). The guru
looked at the duck and said (funniest line of the show, imho), "Is he
supposed to be a duck? Because if he isn't, this is *way* out of my
league." They said the duck was sick; could he do anything? He
pondered, then asked if they could get the duck to swallow a bat; duck
acts surprised; fade out.

| Wellllll, what did anyone think of the season ender?
comments after ff
possible spoilers
I was dissapointed that a bald head made that much difference to Ross
when he obvious liked the girl. It made him seem rather shallow.
Granted a sudden bald head is a bit of a shock but still.... so what
room do you think he went into?
I'm also a little dissappointed that Pete may now be out of the
picture. Of course, I was a little surprized she was able to get over
the Tom Selleck character that quickly too.
Loved the shot where Joey wakes up and is covered in sand, in the
shape of a mermaid.
Terri Gar as Phoebe's mom is actually excellant casting, as far as I'm
concerned... from looks and typecast behavior. When the woman started
giving Phoebe the run around during their first conversation, I
suspected that's how it would turn out?
Overall - not as much of a season hanger as I thought, but I also wish
shows didn't feel the need to do this every season. Most of the season
enders all seem to be continued/cliff hangers - it gets rather
annoying.

That's just the point, he liked the girl, he loves Rachel. The girl was just
a diversion so physical things were much more important if not the entire
relationship.
>so what
> room do you think he went into?
My guess, he went into the other girl's room to tell her he really loved
Rachel. She'll think no big deal and take Joey, meanwhile Rachel will see
him go into the other room, make the wrong assumption, and split.
Well, that's what they might do if it was not the season ending show.
> I'm also a little dissappointed that Pete may now be out of the

This allows them to start fresh with a new Monica plot next fall while
leaving them the option of bringing him back any time.

Up to now, who have they been saying was Phoebe's mom? They talk a lot about
her father but I don't remember anything about her mother. Who and where was
she suppose to be?

305.225 | | QUARRY::petert | rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty | Thu May 22 1997 13:27 | 16 |
| We've never seen Phoebe's mom (or her supposed mom). However Phoebe
has talked about her, and written songs about her, and how she
committed suicide. Apparently a large part of Phoebe's repetoire
are songs about her mom's suicide. Not a real funny topic, but
somehow, with Phoebe, it kind of is...
But Terri Garr as her REAL mom, is indeed an ideal casting. I
also guessed that was the way it was heading. Though it might
be type casting for Terri. She's been playing Phoebe-like
characters since the 60's. A particular stint as a secretary
to Gary Seven in an old Star Trek episode comes to mind...
I say Ross ended up in Rach's room.

| Terri Garr was Gary Seven's secretary??? Cool! I always liked that
character; she came off as ditsy/funny at first, but had a lot of depth
after all.
I didn't figure Terri Garr as being that old, though...
<last show spoiler>
I don't think there's any doubt that Ross wants to end up with Rachael,
or that she still is in love with him -- or else why would she
manipulate his current girlfriend to get bald? By the way, I don't find
Ross' reaction to her sudden baldness to be shallow. If it had just
been a different hair style or color, then that would be... but if a
woman chooses to shave her head, it might indicate that she has some
personality traits that you're not comfortable with. It's not a bad
thing, and could be interesting or fun with the right person... but
Ross seems to have more conservative values. She's more Joey's type
(i.e., female and breathing).
So I think Ross & Rachael will end up together; it's just a matter of
how long will the writers draw out the "will they or won't they?"
theme. That can get annoying after a while. (like in Murphy Brown with
the whole Miles and Corky thing).
See ya,
Jim
