263.1Any rides cause the technicolor yawn.?????BUSY::TBUTLERWed May 22 1991 10:087
	Oh no....they are all veeerrryyy tame *^). Actually I would guess
that you would want to stay away from Space Mountain. BTMR is actually pretty
tame as roller coasters go so that wouldn't be bad. I haven't been on any of
the flight simulator type rides so couldn't give you advice on those. Also some
of the circle vision movies may make you a bit queazy.

    The other ride in the Majic Kingdom that you might not want to go on
    is, Thunder Mountain. I dislike Roller Coaster very much, for the same
    reason, but............you MIGHT want to. It is fun, just the first
    part will tug at your tummy and it wines through a mountain, pretty
    fast.

    Have Fun!

    Space Mountain is a roller coaster which is in the dark so you dont
    know where the hills are so hang on tight &^)!!

    I got more quesier on the teacup ride ;-)
263.4Oh My God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!EXPRES::FENDELANDERTue Jul 30 1991 00:4512
    SPACE MOUNTAIN oh my God, does that bring back memories!!! My husband
    and I went to Disneyland on the las leg of our honeymoon 6 1/2 years
    ago. He said "Honey this ride is great please come on with me, it will
    be a blast!!!!) Well, I knew I was in trouble when the sign said "pleas
    remove your glasses!!!) To this day I still say he was trying to cash
    in on my insurance money and at that point, we had only been married
    for 2 weeks!!!! What a ride!!! I never screamed so much in all my
    life! I'm the type of person who doesn't like the merry-go-round!!!
    boy, what a surprise!!!! If you like that type of ride you'll have a
    great time. But for me, Peter Pan's never never land is enough of an
    adventure!!!  call me a wimp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

263.5DW and DL versions the same?GIAMEM::SHARRINGTONSpace truckin' every dayTue Jul 30 1991 11:4925

		Has anyone ever ridden both versions of Space
	Mountain (ie, the one at Disneyland AND the one at Dis-
	neyworld)? If so, are they exactly the same?

		Reason I ask is, I've ridden the one at Disney-
	land, and I didn't think it was particularly frighten-
	ing. Mind you, I *hate* rollercoasters in general, af-
	ter having ridden the one at Canobie Lake Park, so I was
	always leery of Space Mountain, having been told how
	"exhilarating" it was. Still, I threw caution to the
	wind when we were out in California a few years ago, and
	tried SM. I remember thinking at the time, "What? This
	is IT?! What's so scary about THIS?"

		So I was wondering - is Disneyworld's version of
	the ride so much different than the one on the west coast?
	Cheryl's experience notwithstanding, is DW's ride that
	one that makes everyone else cringe?

263.6Yes there's a differenceDEC25::GULLIKSENDisney in 1991Tue Jul 30 1991 12:0113
re. .5

I've ridden Space Mountain at both parks. I prefer the one at Disneyland
because in my opinion it is much tamer. (I rode the one in Disneyland in
1988.) I could probably ride the one in Disneyland multiple times but I'll
only ride the one in Disney World once a trip.

(I think a friend of mine in California said that the Disneyland version
has been redone and isn't as tame as it use to be.)

Try Big Thunder Mountain. I like it the best.

I was on both the Disneyland and Disneyworld versions of Space mountain last
They both seemed to me to be about the same (kind of lame as coasters go).
263.8Wilder at Disneyworld (and MUCH newer!!)CSTEAM::STEINHARDTTue Jul 30 1991 13:5212
    I've been on both in the last 6 months. First, the cars are different.
    At Disneyland, there are side-by-side seats in each compartment, in
    Disneyworld the seats are single front-to-back, in a straight line. In
    Disneyland the interior of the ride and the track are much more
    visible, where at Disneyworld you can barely see anything in the dark
    other than what they want you to see. I believe that the ride at
    Disneyworld is noticeably wilder (read: bettter!!!!), with a narrower
    track, narrower car, darker environment, and scarier ride.

    Cheers,
    Ken

    At this point, it has been two years since the last time I was at WDW
    (and am anxiously waiting for WorldCon next year), but only two days
    since Disneyland (there has to be some benefits to living in southern
    California), and I still remember ours being a much-tamer version of
    the Florida ride.

263.10Front vs Back of rideFREEBE::NEARYBob NearyWed Jul 31 1991 16:475
    DISNEYLAND I THOUGHT WAS MUCH TAMER THAN WDW. AT DL, I sat in front
    seat: at WDW back seat. By sitting in front, after 30 seconds or so my
    eyes were used to dark and could see... right turn ahead,etc. At WDW
    purposely sat in last seat ... much better.

263.11BREAKR::STARKGRAFBill Starkgraf -- DTN 531-4719Mon Aug 05 1991 14:427
On a coaster like Big Thunder or Space Mountain the train is held back until
the last car is clear of the hill. I have not been on Space Mountain at WDW
but have been in both the front and back seats at Disneyland. IMHO the back
is a much better ride. The fact that you sat in the last car at WDW and the
front at Disneyland is a big enough difference in the ride alone.

263.12Thunder Mountain converts?KAHALA::PRESTONTue Dec 31 1991 12:4812
    I'd like to hear from anyone who is otherwise a confirmed roller-coaster-
    hater who has gathered up the nerve to try Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
    and found that they actually enjoyed it.

    My wife and I are going to WDW in a couple of weeks and I'd like us to
    both try the ride (I hear it's not bad at all), but I'd like some
    reassuring testimonies from others who'd never get on the typical
    amusement-park coaster but liked Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

    Thanks,

    Ed
263.13Try it, you'll like it!CUPMK::JETTETue Dec 31 1991 13:0715
    Not that I hate roller coasters - I'm just petrified! I've been on the
    roller coaster at Canobie Lake Park twice - both times, I got sick and
    I think I shook for hours after. I do go on Big Thunder Mountain every
    time I've been to the Magic Kingdom. It's a blast! I really do enjoy
    the ride! (I do scream, but I think that's supposed to make it more
    fun right?) The only reason I can come up with is the setting that
    BTMR is in makes it not appear to be so frightening as an "open" roller
    coaster does.  (IMHO)

    GO FOR IT!

    Space mountian - Well that's another story!

263.14From a non-RC FreakVISUAL::SCOPAI'd rather be in OrlandoTue Dec 31 1991 14:0814
    You've probably heard it from me before...I'm not a roller-coaster
    freak...but I wanted to experience BTMRR so I did ride it ONCE. I don't
    remember much about it because I had my eyes closed and screamed most
    of the time.

    The other reason I elected to try it was because so many people had
    told me it wasn't your basic roller coaster ride...that it was smooth.

    I guess that's true if you are an avid roller coaster fan.

    It's worth a try...ah...I'd avoid the last car if I were you.

    Well, I'm an avid roller-coaster fan so my opinion probably doesn't
    count but that's not going to prevent me from saying anything... :-)

    I think BTMRR is a fun ride for even those who don't like roller
    coasters. It is a smoother ride than most coasters and doesn't have
    that great big first drop that most of them do. But be warned that it
    does twist about and have a couple of small, quick drops.

    Like Mike suggested, avoid the last car. Sit somewhere in the middle.
    And if you're worried about getting sick (though you'd really have to
    have a super-sensitive stomach I think), go later in your day at the
    park or do it last thing before you take off for your afternoon
    nap/swim. Try it, you may like it.

I'm not a big roller-coaster fan, but I do like Big Thunder Mountain (although
it's been a few years since I've been on it). I *don't* like Space Mountain,
however; that one makes me feel sick, but Big Thunder Mountain doesn't...

    I hate roller coasters, but I love Thunder Mountain! First time
    I rode it I was scared to death and almost chickened out. Now it's
    my favorite ride at WDW! It's almost as tame as the kiddie roller
    coaster that used to be at Canobie Lake, but the ride is longer and
    more interesting.

    Space Mountain is another story. Still haven't had enough nerve to
    try that one.

263.18try it you might like it, over in 45 seconds or soSALEM::BERUBE_CGood Morning WDW!, in 115 daysWed Jan 01 1992 19:2425
    Well I'm a roller coaster lover whose fortunate to have a spouse whose
    game as well, (my son thought is another story) I love Loops,
    corkscrews and of corse Drops. One of my favorite type of ride is The
    Big Bad Wolf at Buch Gardens Old Country in Williamsburg VA, which is a
    suspended roller coaster ride in which you are in a skilift type of car
    suspended from above on a roller caster track, this ride is extremely
    smooth since it uses shocks to soften th e ride when the car swings out
    on turns and drops. I need to get to NJ one of these days and try Six
    Flag's standup roller coaster.

    TMRR is tame by Roller Coaster standards, on of the reasons is the
    theming of the ride, you have things to look at as you go around the
    track, because of that the ride istself is not as fast as some of the
    bigger roller Coasters around, though like someone said there are some
    quick turns and drops but for the most part it's pretty tame. One
    other thing to remember is that TMRR is built into the mountain so that
    your never high off the ground (a few exceptions), for the most part
    track is at ground level. Talking with people I know who hate coasters
    the idea of going fast high up is the thing the hate the most.

    Claude

    PS I also love the Flight similator rides, thanks to BG's Questor ride
    I mentioned about a year and a half in hear somewhere, and can't wait
    to trip Star Tours and Body Wars at WDW and Back to the Future at US.
263.19Try it...CSTEAM::STEINHARDTThu Jan 02 1992 08:438
    I don't like "normal" rollercoasters, and avoid them, but I love BTMR
    and Space Mountain, especially BTMR. I agree with the ealier comments to
    stay closer toward the front, in the middle, for a perceived milder
    ride.

    Cheers,
    Ken

263.20Try every ride and decide for yourselfTOHOKU::TAYLORThu Jan 02 1992 17:529
    I will not go on the roller coaster at Canobie Lake Park.
    I don't like classical roller coaster rides.
    However, I try to do SM & BTMR at least 6 times/day.
    But I also like to do the Canobie Lake Park corkscrew once.

    Do everything at least once. If you don't like it, don't do it
    again until your next visit.

263.21I'm a wimp! I hated BMTRFDCV07::CAMPBELLThu Jan 09 1992 09:3811
    I hate roller coasters and I must say I hated BTMR. I know everyone
    will think I'm crazy but I did try it. Everyone had been telling me
    it was nothing. So the first time I got as far as standing in line,
    getting to the car, walking through the car and leaving. My husband
    went on alone. The next time (August 1991) I decided to be brave since
    my son (10 years old) thought!!! me might try it. So the three of us
    went on it and I hated it. I did not like the curves, the rest was
    fine, but those few turns, turned my stomach. I know I'm a wimp!!
    My son loved it, so my husband is thrilled he now has someone to go
    on with him. They went on about 10 times on our last trip.

263.22It is ok not to like it after you tried itTOHOKU::TAYLORTue Jan 14 1992 18:416

    You are not a wimp! You tried it and do not like it from experience.
    I say good for you. Too many people never even try.

263.23Sister-in-law even tried BTMRR!!LMRFUD::TBUTLERMon Mar 02 1992 11:4219
	I know my response is late but better late than never. Well, my
sister-in-law even went on it and loved it. I'd better explain about my
sister in law. Well, she was about 10 years old when we went and at that
time you couldn't drive from my in-laws in Bellinghom Ma to Fall River without
her 'bowl' (I think you can figure out what the bowl was for). You see her
family was so used to her motion sickness that they took precautions so they
could make it through without stopping 8*<.
	Well, once we at WDW I convinced her to try BTMRR and she said yes!
I wasn;t sure if I had made a wise decision in going with her but I felt that
since I talked her into it I should be the one to bare the brunt of the
possible consequences. We got in line and got on a train, in a middle car,
and next thing you know we were careening around the mountain and having a ball
I could here her screaming and they were screams of joy not screams of agony
so I sat back and enjoyed. We got off the ride and she wanted to go again!!!
It was late and we needed to get going but I still couldn't believe it.
	So I guess that story is testament to the 'tameness' of the ride.

    Last Sept. I was in Orlando for business. My mom (who flies virtually
    for nothing) met me there for the first weekend. (I missed her 50th
    B-day, and we celebrated at DW)

    We were walking through the park and came across SPACE MOUNTAIN. Mom
    looked over and asked; "What's that some type of space ride?"

    I smiled and told her it was very educational.

    By the time we hit the ride I distracted her enough for her not to
    notice where she was until she was getting in (the first) seat.

    I know my mom has no health restrictions, so off we went. She screamed
    her head off! She also confided in me that she had her eyes closed the
    entire ride... I didn't have the heart to tell her it didn't matter.

    P.S. The very BEST rollercoaster is in my town (Cincinnati - Kings
    Island, and is called THE BEAST)
