19.1 | MK + EPCOT VHS movies | GENRAL::HIMES | Close Encounters of the Disk Kind | Sat Feb 25 1989 07:44 | 34 |
|
This note was probably meant for "theatre movies" but I'd like to
comment on the Home Movies (ala VHS).
I just recently received two (2) VHS movies from Disneyworld:
1 "A Dream Called Walt Disney World"
2 "Walt Disney World EPCOT Center - A Souvenir Program"
The first is a view of mostly Magic Kingdom and briefly touches
the other areas (hotels, resort activities, Hoop-d-Doo, Hoop-n-Hollar
swimming, etc). The 2nd movie, of course covers EPCOT.
These movies are, however, "outdated". They provide information
and filming shortly after the "opening" of the particular areas.
Epcot for example, did not cover the Living Seas, and a couple of
other World Showcase countries that were not open at the time. And
of course no mention of any of the soon-to-open attractions like
MGM, Pleasure Island, Typhoon Lagoon, new hotels, etc.
Anyone know if there are more recent renditions available
somewhere ?
Anyway, we're planning a (are you ready for this?) 12-night stay
ON-site (Polynesian Village) trip for 1st 2 weeks in Aug/89.
My fiancee' has never been there so seeing it through here eyes
will be a real "fix" for me. I obtained the movies to "wet her
appetitie". Even though they're a bit outdated, watching them
from time to time is a pretty good "fix" in itself. But the draw
back is they're also a pretty heavy "stimulator" too !

That's OK, plenty of the theatrical movies are now on VHS.

Rumor had it they are planning an update.

I totally agree, watching any of the parades on TV (Christmas, Easter
etc.) does the same thing to me as well, as a matter of fact my '87
trip was the result of watching the Captain EO special they had in Oct.
'86 (I really wasn't planning on going back until'89 or '90 and the
wife and I thought maybe a crusise would be nice for our 10th
anniversary but after watching that we looked at each other and said
yes yes yes ;^).

| My favorite Disney movie is Lady and the Tramp. I'd never get
sick of watching this movie. When I was young, I wanted to
be a part of Darling's and Jim Dear's family. The song that
Darling sings to her newborn, I sign to my baby as well. I
love the song. I've written it into my son's baby book.....

Thanks. It happens we have that video. (We rented it
from a video store and the VCR, since replaced, broke the
tape. Thus, we had to buy it - about $15.00. However,
I kept the tape and was able to repair it.)
Jerry is right. In fact, it has only PART of the "Sorcerer's

stuff).
(We also have both the original soundtrack recording, on
record, and the new digital recording, on CD.)
(We need a separate note on _Fantasia_.)

| Well I went to go see 'The Rescuers" this weekend with my son and we
caught a trailer for a new film from Touchstone due out this summer.
It stars Rick Moranis and I think it is called 'Honey, I shrunk the
Kids', I was laughing so hard, didn't quite catch the title, and so was
the audience, that as long as the trailer didn't have all the funny
parts in it it'll be a winner. Basically from the plot, Rick Moranis
is a inventor of sort (kinda like a new Absent minded professor) in
which he accidentally creates a shrinking ray, that as you guess it
shrinks the kids. I won't go into details but I can only hope it'll be
great.
Also over the weekend CNN stated that Disney has signed a 7 year
contract with Goldy Hann (spelling?) which she is to work on
multi-picture deal for a new movie division called 'Hollywood Movies'.

full of laughs, my son and I kept looking at each other during the
first 15 min and saying this is great. I don't want to give the plot
away, see .11 for some details, but I will say the Opening credits are
just fantastic, kind of like a cross of the Animated Pink Panther
opening's and that of Who Framed Roger Rabbit Cartoon.
Speaking of Roger Rabbit, also playing with this is the new 'Tummy
Trouble', Well if you though the opening of 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit'
was great for the fast action sight gag's then you'll love this one.
This is just the begining of a series of Roger Rabbit short coming to

Dan,
According to the article mentioned in 31.38, Disney created Hollywood
Pictures which will operate as a nearly identical twin to Touchstone,
in hopes to pick up market share once held by the many disappearing

It was limited released a few years back, and is not out now as a new

19.27 | Dick Tracy | SENIOR::GOLDBERG | Len --> o &  in 176 days | Fri Jun 01 1990 12:06 | 86 |
| From: [email protected] (VERNON SCOTT, UPI Hollywood Reporter)
Subject: Disney betting on `Dick Tracy'
Date: 1 Jun 90 05:05:40 GMT
UPI Arts & Entertainment -- Scott's World
HOLLYWOOD (UPI) -- Is the comics' cop ``Dick Tracy'' any match for
the cartoons' caped crusader ``Batman''?
It's more than a rhetorical question about a shoot-out between the
late Chester Gould's funnies crime fighter and the dynamic duo (which
the movie changed to mono). It is a far more important financial
puzzler, a serious matter of box-office figures.
``Batman'' broke all sorts of records at the box office in 1989,
with more than $250 million in domestic ticket sales alone, making it
the fourth-highest domestic grosser ever.
Hollywood is now speculating that the summer of 1990 will be
dominated by ``Dick Tracy'' just as ``Batman'' was king of 1989. And
while surpassing $250 million seems unlikely, it could happen.
Warren Beatty -- who directed and stars in the title role in ``Dick
Tracy'' -- has a loyal following, but his last movie, ``Ishtar'' in 1987,
ranked among the biggest bombs in film history.
The fact that it was a broad, unfunny comedy co-starring Dustin
Hoffman under the heavy hand of director Elaine May has done little to
assuage Beatty's failure.
It taught Beatty -- one of the shrewdest judges of what flies on the
screen and what doesn't -- to keep a low profile on the behind-the-scenes
machinations, especially when it involves the budget.
Always secretive, Beatty made ``Dick Tracy'' with little or no
publicity. He has remained mum on casting major stars in a handful of
small roles.
``Ishtar'' was bludgeoned by critics, many of whom reviewed the
cost of the picture rather than the flick itself. They were outraged by
its size -- estimated at $35 million -- and reviewed the budget as if it
were an integral part of the screen image.
Beatty has omitted that possibility with ``Dick Tracy,'' a Disney
picture. The studio is hesitant to announce its cost, but it is conceded
to be between $25 million and $30 million. Not peanuts, to be sure. But
the average mainstream comedy with major stars goes for about $20
million these days.
This summer there will be more expensive films released, among them
``Total Recall'' with Arnold Schwarzenegger, rumored at $50
million-plus.
``Warren kept the overhead down on `Dick Tracy' to prevent the
budget being reviewed in the notices,'' a Beatty intimate said.
``He applied tremendous discipline in making the film on time and
budget. He found ways to use miniatures and mattes to create an entire
city without having it look (like a matte).
``Warren created Gould's world on film, using the cartoonist's
primary colors without spending a fortune. Almost the entire picture was
shot on studio sound stages and on local locations.
``The major difference between `Tracy' and `Ishtar' is that Warren
directed this film and it reflects not only his vision but his control
of costs.''
``Dick Tracy'' is not a cynical attempt on the part of Beatty nor
Disney Studios to capitalize on the awesome response to ``Batman.'' The
picture was conceived by Beatty 10 years ago, long before ``Batman'' was
in the works.
Those who have seen the closely guarded picture say it is highly
stylized in cartoonist Gould's tradition.
Beatty has attempted to create a fantasy world that brings new
images to the screen. Examples include the automobiles used in the
picture. Gould's cars were never identifiable as Fords or Chevys. Beatty
also has used this technique.
Today a motion picture must gross nearly triple its cost of
production to go into profit, which means ``Dick Tracy'' will have to
earn about $90 million before it goes into the black.
Insiders say it is possible ``Dick Tracy'' will be the first major
film to earn back its production cost, say $27 million, in its debut
week, beginning June 15.
While Beatty is a major box-office attraction, his co-star,
Madonna, in the role of Breathless Mahoney, has a poor track record in
films. But the cast is improved by ``secret'' cameo appearances by
Hoffman, Al Pacino and James Caan playing various Gould heavies.
Other players include such top performers as Charles Durning as
police chief Brandon, Ed O'Ross as Itchy, Mandy Patinkin as 88 Keys,
William Forsythe as Flattop and Glenne Headly as Tess Trueheart.
What could hurt ``Dick Tracy'' is the dated quality of the comic
strip and the comparatively low-tech special effects as against the
flamboyance of ``Batman,'' his spectacular hangout and batmobile. Kids
love the fantasy element that ``Batman'' provided.
Moreover, ``Dick Tracy'' will be facing off this summer against
such other major attractions as ``Total Recall,'' ``Robocop 2,''
``Another 48 Hours,'' ``Gremlins 2: The New Batch'' and ``Die Hard 2.''
A big plus for ``Dick Tracy'' is that it will be released with the
comic short-subject ``Roller Coaster Rabbit,'' starring Roger Rabbit.

color scheme of the sets/clothing, some of the actors used, and the
secrecy/security surrounding the set, for example
'the three incognito stars had contractual requirements which
disallowed the use of their names in connection with the making of the
film. We worked closely with the actor who plays Big Boy to create the
makeup design used. Each day his name was listed as 'Guido Frescotti'

I believe I remember hearing that Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman and someone

Also is a side article discussing the Dick Tracy Apparel that will be

I won't give out spoillers since it's new and don't want to spoil it
for anyone, but I will say this.
Al Pacino was great as Big Boy who is the main villian through the
film, and Dustin Hoffman was superb as Mumbles especially the last
scene between Mumbles and Dick Tracy, that was great. Madonna does a
great Breathless Mahoney, reminded me of Marylan Monroe, and you could
see that Warren Beatty/DT was having a hard time ;^), and Madonna's
clothes hhmmm.
The sceneray/mat painting/sets etc. was hard to believe at times that
you weren't looking at a real place, since it all took place on a

| Hi Disney fans,
I just added Disney to my notebook so I could intrude for a moment and
ask a question that, hopefully, someone can answer.
My alltime favorite Disney film is one many people probably have never
heard of..., "Song of the South." I recall with great fondness the
stories from Uncle Remus about Brer' Rabbit, Brer' Fox, Brer' Bear, the
Tarbaby, the briarpatch, etc.
Contrary to other Disney films, SotS is not re-released every 5-or-6
years. I understand this is because of accusations that this
charmingly innocent film contains offensive racial stereotypes....what
garbage that is!
Anyhow, the question I wanted to ask was whether anyone knows of _any_
way one might obtain a copy of SotS? I'd give quite a lot to be able
to add this to the other classics in my Disney classics.
I thought I heard that the Disney channel was going to run SotS a year
or so back but apparently not. I think it's almost criminal that
today's kids are deprived of seeing this movie, hearing the music and
loving the characters. The new ride (Splash Mountain) and the section
that used to be known as Bear Country at Disneyland no centers totally
around SotS and it's a shame that the kids haven't a clue as to who all
these characters are.

19.52 | A few comments on "The Rocketeer" | CSC32::J_HANLON | JOEY | Sat Jun 22 1991 14:33 | 13 |
| We took our son (who's 6) to the early matinee of "The Rocketeer" yesterday.
He had a great time and loved the movie. He has always been fascinated with
planes and flying, which I think made the movie even more enjoyable for
him. It was a pretty good family movie, though in my opinion I thought the end
was a little too violent for a 6 year old. Of course my son didn't mind! :-)
The story reminded me of one of the old-time kind of hero movies. It did seem
to be aimed at a younger audience, but we enjoyed it all the same. The special
effects were interesting, but not spectacular. They reminded me alot of
those seen in "The Flight of the Navigator". I don't know that I would pay
full price for it, but it was definitely worth the $3.50 matinee price. There
were several scenes that made you laugh, some suspense (though not the edge
of your seat type), and the good-guys are mostly everyday-type likeable
people. All in all, we had a pleasant evening!

19.57 | ?? about "So Dear To My Heart" | 16BITS::DELBALSO | I (spade) my (dog face) | Wed Aug 28 1991 16:00 | 9 |
| In 1949, Walt Disney Productions put out a full length feature film called
"So Dear To My Heart", starring Bobby Driscoll and Beulah Bondi. This may
very well have been Disney's first live-action film (although some animation
was included).
Does anyone know if this was ever released on Video or shown on the Disney

| Jack,
I haven't seen it in TDC or out in video. It's not an easily marketable
film. It did not enjoy much success because there were no real strong
characters to build on.
It was released in late 1948 and introduced the song "Lavender Blue
(Dilly Dilly)" sung by Burl Ives, also in the film.
This is a good film for trivia. Walt was especially fond of this film
because it reminded him of his childhood. Some feel it's
autobiographical but I'm not so sure if I'd go along with that.

| I think that the real 'legacy' of this film might have been that it
indirectly lead to the introduction of Audio-Animatronics. If I remember
correctly, it was a scene from this film that Walt wanted to animate in 3D in
miniature for the travelling show of miniature 3D scenes who's name escapes me.
So I guess you could say that this film was a distant ancestor of Pirates of
the Carribean!

| Coming March 27th is Disney's first Live action Musical in over a

'NEWSIES'
From the trailerI was able to gleem that it is about the 1890's paper
stike in NY, with Robert Duvall as Pulitzer (sp?), and a cast of
unknowns as the NEWSIES. Features 7 new songs from the team that
brought the score for Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.
I just finished watching this on E! (entertainment TV), not sure if
Ashman had any envolement on this but the way the trailer went sounded
like they meant Menken & Ashman. The one song they showed sounded
good, but I wasn't paying attention to the lyrics since it was a
massive Street dancing scence going on with the NEWSIES doing their
solidairity type of thing, and the dance sequence they should was
impressive group dancing scene ala Micheal Jackson's thriller or
Captain EO type of group.
I expect to start seeing this being advertise in the coming weeks

| What does Disney have against mothers? Especially for female leads. Has
anyone else ever noticed that lead female characters almost never have a
mother in Disney animated features?
Cinderella - mother dead, lived with evil step-mother
Snow White - mother dead(?), lived with evil step-mother
Sleeping Beauty - grew up in hiding, without her mother
Olivia Flaversham - no mother
Arielle - no mother
Belle - no mother
Jasmine - no mother
About the only lead female character I can think of with a mother is Wendy,
in Peter Pan.

| Except for Olivia these are all 'classic' fairy tales or
stores which are generations old. I don't know how responsible
Disney is for their content, but if they can change the
ending of the Hans Christian Anderson's Little Mermaid, I suppose
they could add a Mom here and there.
Perhaps the lack of a mother figure is why all the characters
are so 'troubled' :-)
Aladdin was suppose to have a mom, but the revamped story made
him an orphan and the produces cut the 'mom' song Aladdin sings.

| I read an article a long time ago that pointed to this. Disney
features/cartoons/etc., often play on one of children's greatest
frears -- being orphaned or losing a parent.
Yes, Bambi was mentioned for this very reason in the piece.
Also Donald Duck's nephews, Mowgli in Jungle Book, Tramp had
no family, the dalmation puppies are torn from their parents,
and others. So it's not just the female leads that face this
peril.

|
19.72 | Here's some details | XLIB::BRUNELL | Outlanders MRO D Division Champs, Again | Wed Feb 24 1993 13:51 | 16 |
| Well I read the Eisner book and they talk about these in there. Silver
Screen Partners is an investment plan. You buy x shares in a
particular Silver Screen offering. I think they are on their fith or
sixth offering. Silver Screen then agrees to pay a percentage of the
cost of a film, up to a certain dollar figure, for a share in the
profits of the film. Disney doesn't have to use as much up front cash
to make a film, so lower risk to the company, but doesn't make as much
profit afterwards.
The amount of risk Silver Screen has been willing to cover has been
dropping over the last couple of offerings as Disney has expanded its
film productions.
I'm not sure how to buy shares in Silver Screen Partners.

19.73 | Forbes magazine has had a couple of articles on these partnerships | MICROW::PTPM06::TALCOTT | | Thu Feb 25 1993 08:48 | 15 |
| The most recent, was, um, sometime last spring or summer, I believe. Basically,
they said (at least with some of the more recent partnerships) that Disney is
very good at getting financing, and that it's a great deal for them but the odds
of the public investors doing well are not very good. I believe it had to do with
the ability of the company to lump loser movies in with the winners. The losses
on the former offset the profit on the latter and therefore there isn't much to
dole out to the limited partners. The article range 1 - 1 1/2 pages. Forbes has
an index in the first few pages of every issue of all the companies mentioned in
that issue, however I'm sure an on-line search service at your local library
would find the article more quickly.
From what I read in Forbes, I would put my money elsewhere.

WOW! The difference is incredible. Its a different movie than when
played on regular TV/VCR. Even though it was late, I wated the whole
movie, not believing my ears. There are so many off-view sounds that
get projected into the room that are not heard by regular equip.
The end result is to put the viewer into the picture rather than
viewing the picture.
I haven't even hooked up the rear speakers yet.
I rarely go to movie theaters since they were reduced to shoe boxes and
one could hear six movies at once. I suspect it didn't sound as good
in the theater.
You owe it to yourself to see and hear this movie on good equipment.
on a sad note, they preview 101 dalmations at the end. The sound on it
was standard varity. I suspect that old movies will play that way and
only the new ones will have the surround sound capabilities.

19.75 | Snow white info | RCWOOD::WOOD | | Mon Jul 12 1993 13:30 | 91 |
|
From the Internet....-=-=-R~C~W-=-=-
UPI Arts & Entertainment -- Scott's World
HOLLYWOOD (UPI) -- ``Aladdin'' and ``Beauty and the Beast'' posted
higher box-office receipts than any previous animated movies, but the
most overwhelming, the fairest of them all, remains ``Snow White and the
Seven Dwarfs.''
There had been no such thing as an animated feature motion picture in
1937 when Disney and his magicians produced ``Snow White'' and created
an industry.
Certainly, there was Mickey Mouse, Felix the Cat, Popeye and other
animated short subjects to help audiences laugh during the Great
Depression. However, the impact of ``Snow White'' stunned the world with
its beauty, charm and sentimentality.
The wonderful old film based on the Grimm brothers' classic fairy
tale is expected to work its customary spell once again beginning this
weekend when it is re-released to theaters for the eighth time.
Disney has produced the best-looking, best-sounding prints of ``Snow
White'' yet, improving the original negative with a state-of-the-art
Dolby stereo system and digital restoration, obliterating some slight
imperfections that existed on the original prints.
The studio's top film technicians hired Kodak for the restoration
using that company's Cineon advanced laser-scan digital technology,
which Kodak calls the High Resolution Electronic Intermediate System.
In keeping with Disney's determination to maintain the film's
original artistic integrity, all 700 scenes comprising the picture were
analyzed one frame at a time.
The result is a brighter, cleaner, sharper and fresher finished
product than it was 56 years ago.
Probably the most spectacular difference is the sound system.
``Heigh-Ho,'' ``Some Day My Prince Will Come,'' ``With A Smile And A
Song'' and ``Whistle While You Work'' have never sounded better.
In 1989 ``Snow White'' was selected by the Library of Congress for a
place in film history, including it among the first 25 feature movies to
be preserved in the National Film Registry.
It ranks with ``Casablanca,'' ``The Wizard of Oz'' and ``Gone With
the Wind'' as a certified Hollywood treasure.
Many motion picture archivists say it is the most popular and widely-
seen motion picture ever made in Hollywood, although it is far from tops
at the box office.
When it was first released, theater tickets cost 50 cents for adults
and two bits for kids in the midst of the worst depression of the 20th
century. At today's prices it would be right up there with ``Jurassic
Park.''
All the same, an estimated 20 million people saw ``Snow White'' in
its original release. It was the No. 1 box-office movie for about a year
until it was knocked off by ``Gone With the Wind.''
Originally budgeted for an optimistic $150,000 in 1934, the costs
swelled to $1.5 million, an astronomical figure in its time.
Walt Disney showed bits and pieces of the film to the Bank of
America, convincing loan officers he had a potential hit. The bank
bailed him out. Without the last minute emergency loan, the studio would
have been bankrupt.
Animation was a slow, cumbersome process in those days. ``Snow White''
was in production four years and involved 750 artists, including 32
animators, 102 assistants, 107 in-betweeners (people who drew connecting
sequences between animators' key drawings), 20 layout artists, 25
background artists and 65 special-effects animators along with 158
inking and painting specialists.
The 83-minute film did not include two sequences, one in which the
dwarfs eat soup and another where they build a bed for Snow White,
because they slowed down the action.
In all, some 2 million drawings and sketches were made during
production. Eventually, there were a quarter-million finished drawings
used with musical backgrounds provided by an 80-piece orchestra.
``Snow White'' was last released in 1987 for the film's 50th
anniversary. The surpassing worldwide popularity of the ground-breaking
movie lies in the fact that its characters are not simply funny, they're
lovable.
Snow White is an endearing heroine who remains vulnerable, sweet and
pure of heart even in the face of death at the hands of the wicked queen
and the poisoned apple. The dwarfs and their individual eccentricities
contributed enormously to the film's runaway success.
The seven principal animators assigned to the dwarfs fought for their
characters with the ferocity of ham actors upstaging each other for time
in the limelight. Each animator endowed his dwarf with a strong,
distinctive personality unforgettable to filmgoers.
Almost every American can recite their names: Bossy Doc, shy little
Bashful, choleric Grumpy, heavy-lidded Sleepy, cheerful Happy, allergic
Sneezy and blissfully weird, silent Dopey.
The world is infinitely more sophisticated than when ``Snow White''
made its debut on Dec. 21, 1937, at the old Carthay Circle theater (long
since razed), but the movie still has the power to create wonder in the
minds and hearts of audiences of every age.

It's interesting that they're leaving the "It's barbaric, but hey, it's

Kathy Nijimy, actually. Or Najimy. Shoot, now I don't remember, and I
watched "Sister Act" just the other night on Showtime. ("Nijimy" looks right...)
I hope that the witch (wiccan?) community doesn't get all up in arms
about "Hocus Pocus" the way the Arab community is about "Aladdin"...

| Reviews I have read say that this movie is not very good.
Best review I've seen was 1.5 stars, and the one in this
morning's paper only gave it 1 star.
Maybe it's a "Don't pay full price" flick and we should wait
until we can rent it for a buck.
I'd like to hear from anyone who gets to see it.

To correct myself :-), it's "Najimy" (confirmed from ads and reviews that are
now appearing).
Today's edition of the Boston Globe had a review of "Hocus Pocus." The
reviewer wasn't crazy about it, but neither did he condemn it. He thought
Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker all did a good job.
However, he thought the parts that are supposed to be scary aren't scary
enough...!

BACKGROUND:
"The Santa Clause" stars Tim Allen ("Home Improvement") as a
divorced dad competing with a new stepdad for the affections of his
young son. Adding to his dilemma is a near-Christmas catastrophe
when the real Santa Claus falls off the roof and father and son
spend a magical night stepping into the sleigh delivering presents
and visiting the North Pole.
There's just one catch: this is no temp job. The film opens
Friday, Nov. 11 nationwide and is rated "PG."

Headline: FILM REVIEW: `THE SANTA CLAUSE': ADMIRABLE RESTRAINT
By JANET MASLIN
c.1994 N.Y. Times News Service
It may be early for Christmas, but it's not too early for a clever,
entertaining children's film with a realistic edge and a minimum of
seasonal mush.
``The Santa Clause'' easily transports Tim Allen from success on
television (he is the star of ``Home Improvement'') to bright prospects on
the big screen.
Behind Allen's rubbery-faced amiability there lurks a welcome cynicism,
one that serves him well in this fresh, cheerful story.
Allen plays Scott Calvin, a divorced father who finds himself
unexpectedly roped into a career of delivering presents and talking to
reindeer, to the surprise and delight of his young son. If Christmas is
the film's nominal subject, its subtext is mending the wounds of divorce.
It deals with that issue in graceful, reassuring ways.
The film begins at Christmastime, as Scott has to wrangle with his
ex-wife, Laura (Wendy Crewson), and her boyfriend, Neal (Judge Reinhold),
over a visit with little Charlie (Eric Lloyd). A seasonal dinner gives
Allen the chance to use a fire extinguisher on a turkey, thus echoing his
television routines. And a lonely Christmas meal in a restaurant, where
the clientele consists of divorced dads and foreign businessmen, creates a
mood of humorously evoked seasonal gloom.
Then, back home, Scott hears a noise on the roof and accidentally
startles Santa, who tumbles to the ground and dies. (This scene will not
frighten young children, nor will ``The Santa Clause'' rock their
certainty that Santa exists.)
Anyway, the real Santa vanishes, leaving behind sled, reindeer, presents
and an empty suit. And Scott steps temporarily into the breach, not
realizing that if he puts on Santa's suit he will be abandoning ``any
previous identity, real or implied.'' Santa has put him under contract to
take the job on a permanent basis, and the contract has fine print.
The rest of the film has fun with Scott's transformation into Santa,
entertainingly evoked through weight gains, increasingly Christmasy
costumes and smart children, like the little girl who sees him and
whispers, ``I want some ballet slippers.''
The special effects and prosthetic aids that plump up Allen are
outstandingly good, and the film finds amusing ways to joke about his
diet. Early in the film, irritable about being pressed into Santa duty, he
refuses Santa's traditional Christmas Eve milk and cookies ``because Santa
is watching his saturated fats.''
Like practically every Christmas movie, ``The Santa Clause'' moves from
skepticism to faith, but it faces some typically modern obstacles to
suspending disbelief.
Since Neal, Charlie's mother's boyfriend, is a psychiatrist, and since
Charlie begins talking about knowing Santa, there is much trendy talk of
denial and delusion regarding Scott's behavior. Even in school, Charlie
can't get anyone to take him seriously.
When he talks about friends from the North Pole, his teacher (Mary
Gross) just smiles sweetly and corrects him: ``They're little people.
Don't say elves.''
The film's North Pole set is a colorful treat. (``You know, I must say,
you look pretty good for your age,'' Scott tells one elf, who looks like a
little girl but is supposedly centuries old. ``Thanks, but I'm seeing
someone in wrapping,'' she answers.) And it also uses some flashy,
effective morphing tricks to send Allen down chimneys and turn radiators
into fireplaces for Santa's visits.
But this film's nicest touch is its sugar-free resolution of Charlie's
problems with his parents, who, despite the fact that one of them has
become Santa Claus, are not forced into a dishonest resolution. The
story's ending avoids heavy-handedness while giving Charlie the gift he
wants most in the world.
``The Santa Clause'' is brightly directed by John Pasquin, whose solid
television credits include ``Home Improvement'' and ``Roseanne,'' and who
knows how to hold an audience's interest. The screenplay is by Leo
Benvenuti and Steve Rudnick, whose background in stand-up comedy keeps
lively gags coming at a steady pace.
If ``The Santa Clause'' incorporates enough of a red-and-green color
scheme without developing a cloying look, it helps that the
cinematographer, Walt Lloyd, has more solemn credits, including ``Short
Cuts'' and ``Sex, Lies and Videotape.''
This film looks festive enough, but it also has an admirable restraint.
Here is a savvy Christmas fable about the kind of Santa who's not always
in the mood for ho-ho-hoing, and who knows he's not the only delivery game
in town. The movie also makes reference to Federal Express.

| Those must be a joke, probably from the 'flak' of the Lion
King being similar to the japanese cartoon "Simba the White Lion".
Note the line "all original concepts" in the previous note.
Space Station Yamato is a japanese cartoon which Galactic Cruiser
Arizona sounds quite familiar...
Pinocchio 2051 is a lot like Astroboy
I assume Beach Blanket BEM is a parody of another japanese cartoon
sounds like someone's idea of a joke.
