914.0. "Post Your 1990's Low Scores Here (9) (18)" by WALTA::LENEHAN (Relax... think golf) Wed Apr 11 1990 10:46

    Hi Everyone,

This topic will be used to document your lowest scores to date,
for either nine or eighteen holes. As the season progresses it'll
be interesting to watch the scores come in.

Simply supply the date, course name, what tees you played from, and
    the total score.

    	Thanks,

First "real" 9 holes (don't count the March 17 outing, slogging
around Norwood): 43 at Millwood in Framingham. Three pars, four
bogies, two double bogies. Hit four greens in regulation (probably
a personal best); scrambled for a bogey after the worst tee shot
in the history of golf; only 3-putted once (missing a par in the
process *%$%#%). Took second double on the easiest hole on the
course - 460-yard par 5, most of it down hill (tried to squeeze
a few extra yards out of my new driver and toed it, compounded the
felony by chili-dipping the approach shot). Looking forward to
Monday, and the second round of the season (if this rain ever stops).

Yikes! I've played Stow South twice this year. In March I shot an
indifferent 91. I was playing alright, but I had a quad (!) on the
9th and the 10th. It was disgusting.

But then I played again on the afternoon of April 5. South course
from the whites, which were up a bit. Everything felt smooth and
easy. I actually remember the round for all the birdies I missed.
I hit 9 greens, just missed three others, had a critical, bonehead
chilly-dip.....and shot 82! This is my best score ever on that course.
    41-41. Nicely balanced.

    shot 41/39 = 80. I had 2 birds back to back on
4 and 5, 3 total for the day. I was putting for at least
7 birds. I hit the drive a ton and was very accurate
with the fairway to green shots! I wish a few more puts fell.
All in all I was happy with my play...just need to keep it up!

Well, the good news is it's still early in the year. My low score so
far, and I've done it twice (my game's SO consistent), is 91. The
first one was at TPC in Scottsdale, AZ. Playing from the Blues
(they're not the longest) rating 71, slope 124, I had 8 pars, only five
doubles, but... it was the 11 on 15 that did me in. What a disaster!
But, I came right back and parred 16.

The second came the next day at Superstition Springs in Mesa, AZ. Here
it was my putting that did me in. I putted 38 times (Ugh)! The greens
were FAST. The rating here was 74.1 and the slope 130.

Before the year is out I'm confident I'll post better scores (I'm going
    miniature golfing next weekend).

Shot an 89 yesterday at Passaconaway. 44-45=89 from the whites
since they don't have the blues out yet. Talk about a day/night
difference from the front side to the back. The front has only one
par 4 longer than 400 yards from the blues at 412 yards and the only
    par 5 is 521. The back has 4 par 4's over 400 at 460,478,473,449
and the 2 par 5's are 561, 591. Hopefully, for our league there

Thanks Jack , I really enjoyed playing the Vespers . Lush is a
good way of explaining the conditions. It was my first time
seeing the course and I felt like I was on the tour, luckily
the Pro I was playing with played the Vespers a bunch of times
and new the course VERY well. Without all his direction I would
have been in a lot of trouble !

The tees were positioned anywhere from middle to back on all the
holes. The par 3's were all spectacular... when I stepped up to
the 9th tee I was bummin , the weather went from zero wind with a
overcast, to a dark sky , windy gusts from all directions, then a
cold rain all in about 2 minutes ;( . I stood at the tee and the
hole was playing 210, but with the uphill green and wind, I gave
it 230+. Hit a 1 iron at the pin, but it started to draw high left
at the trees. Got a VERY lucky bounce and ended up pin high left
just behind a trap, and just behind a tree... best I could do was
get it 8-10 feet from the hole. I chipped it and it rolled to 10
feet.. sunk the putt and (thank God) saved par... I have never
been so happy and relieved !!

    	thanks again,

    re:.32
It's interesting that the USGA should allow consecutive 9-hole scores
to be used for a handicap even though the 9's are played on different
days. I'm pretty sure that isn't allowed over here ( Ireland ).

I was fortunate to do a good score recently with this method of
    calculating.
    Day 1 43-37 on a par 34-35 course
Day 2 36-? on the same course a week later ( had to abandon round
    after 11 holes).
So if i'm nice to myself this works out to be 73 (+4) for the 18.

On the second day i had my best run of bogey free golf...8 holes,
a birdie followed by 7 pars on the trot, which was nice to do.

    RE:.35

    Martin,

Let me clarify a few things... You played 18 holes in your day 1
example - thus that is your 18 hole round. Posting consecutive 9
hole rounds only pertains to those cases where you play 9 holes
then another 9 holes on a following day. If you play an 18 hole
round in between the 9 hole rounds then the 9 hole rounds can
not be turned in for consecutive 9 hole rounds.

	Re: .35

However if you had played two more holes you would have been able
to turn in a score for your hot round. You just figure par for the
remaining holes plus strokes on the holes where you would have
	received them.

THE greens on North were the worst in 16 years!
You can't roll/feed a birdie/par putt. Every putt is an adventure

I played Stow North yesterday also, and agree with your assesment of the

Other than the greens, the course is in great shape, however, and I'm

I'm new to golfing in N.E. coming from Texas and I am beginning
to adjust to the "hills" around here. My best 18 holes this year
was on Patriots day at Heritage in Charlton. I shot 44-44:88 with
a nice birdie on # 12. My best 9 holes this year was at Colonial
Acres in Houma, La. (Outside New Orleans) I shot a 42 but the most
notable thing was I had my best hole "EVER" on #4 which was a 568
yard par 5. I hit a driver, 4 wood, then sank a wedge from about
60 yards for an eagle. What a feeling!!!!!!!!!

Well the home course has not been good to me so far this year. However,
I had a good outing Memorial day at Biddeford-Saco C.C. in Old Orchard
    Beach, Maine. 48 - 53 - 101. I had a chance to break 100. 93 on the
tee at 18 (285yd par 4 dogleg right). I am playing with a new set of
DTR's still trying to get the feel for them. The confidence and shot
making is coming around. I still need work on the greens. It's getting
    better.

Hope to post lower scores later in the year.

    then proceeded to take an 8 and a 9 on 17 and 18 for a 47 back.
Best nine was two weeks ago in the league. Shot 39. Best hole
has to be number 3 at edgewood yesterday. Played with my brother,
dad (70yrs) and uncle (79yrs) for fathers day. This is a short
par four down hill. Bunkers right and left. Drive was off of the
down slope of bukbers on right. Ball rolled up 4 ft bask the pin.
Sunk the putt for an eagle.

Some breather from work to enter at least one note.

After playing one of my worst rounds at the outing at Crompin' Fox, I
decided to go back to the range. Hit two large baskets for two days, and
found out I was both not finishing my backswing and not starting the down
swing with my hips, but with my arms. At the end of the second day I was
hitting them more consitently and decided to go out for a test.

So went out a week ago on Sunday to Stow Acres and hit 43 in the front of
the North and 46 in the front of the South. That 46 could have been a
44, since I was past the green in two at the 9th and manage to choke and
finish with a 7.

I haven't been under 90 in quite some time, so it felt great!

I played Maplewood yesterday. Had the best 9 of my life on the
front, and then what felt like the worst on the back:

    	White Tees

    	Front 9 par 35 39
    	Back 9 par 35 53
    				--
    				92

Normally I would be thrilled with a 92, but after being 4 over on
the front, the wheels just came off. I discovered that the game is a
lot easier (and more fun) when you can hit off the tee.
The best thing about the 39 is that I was hitting the greens from
the fairway, so my poor short game didn't really come in to play
(although I did have a few good chips). The hilight of the day though,
came on the 6th hole. My drive faded to the right side of the fairway,
in a patch of clovers, about 140 yds from the hole. I hit a 6 iron
that looked like it was headed right for the pin. My partner said that
it went in, but I didn't want to believe him. When I got up to the
green, I didn't see the ball anywhere, so I looked in the cup, and
    there it was!

    			AN EAGLE!!!!! (My first one)

I really impressed myself by finishing the front par-birdie-par
instead of getting really pumped up, trying to kill the ball and
falling apart. I just keep wishing I hadn't gone OB on the 4th hole.
Another interesting note: The last time I played, we got caught in
the rain, so I brought my glove in the house to dry it out (it usually
stays in the bag in the car). Of course I forgot it yesterday, so I
    played the round bare-handed. I don't think I'll ever use a glove
    again!

    Can't wait to play again!

Finally, my swing is in the groove...

I guess, could have been a sub 90 round, as several par putts were of
    by a matter of milimeters..

But, the best part is I did not slice 1 shot !!!! I pushed 3 to the
right, but it was not a slice.

My cure...I moved about an inch closer to the ball and my swing is
    "low and slow"...Also, I stopped using woods. I'm taking a 3 iron

Played Amherst, NH, Wednesday 7/4 and shot an 81 (my best score ever).
I was striking my drives particularly well and putting pretty decent
too. On the front, I hit 6 fairways and 5 greens while shooting a 39.
On the back, I only hit 4 fairways (which caused me to record two 7's)
    and 4 greens for 42. I only had 1 3-putt greens (33 total putts).
Recorded 8 pars and 2 birds (both par 5's one of which I was putting
    for eagle).

As you can tell, I struggled a bit on the back making two tough par
    saving putts (on the par 3 13th - 10'downhill and the par 4 16th - 20'
uphill right to left). I also had about a 60' uphill birdie putt on the
par 5 14th which I 'calmly tapped in.'

I only got in trouble twice off the tee. Once on the par 4 12th which
requires a lay-up to the top of a hill. I hit a 5 iron OB (just hit it
a little too far left, next shot was perfect). Then on the par 5 17th,
I hit my driver to a narrow landing area and was too far right behind
    some trees.

All in all it was the best I think I've ever palyed. I can't wait 'til
I can back out there again.

These aren't particularly noteworthy, but I had a 79 at Ekwanok
(Manchester, Vt.) on 7/4 and a 79 at Yale on 7/5 in the Ben Hogan Pro
Am. Real nice event, and we finished tied for 2nd so we all won white
Hogan Tour golf bags. Beautiful bags, they have the fur club dividers -
the full Cleveland ! I was just hoping for balls or something, so I was
really pleased (although I have 6 bags at home...). They gave each
contestant Waterford crystal, golf balls and a shirt, and we had a
super lunch and happy hour. Unfortunately, the happy hour was before I
teed off, and it was a 96 degree "blast furnace," so I skipped the
sauce. The event was super organized, and a lot of fun. The fairways at
    Yale were (as usual) awful.
One interesting side note - one of my partners (a 21 hcp) had a hole
in one with a STROKE ! The sleazeball never even stopped in to buy
ANYONE a drink after the round ! Color him "N" for no class ! Hell, I'd
have bought him one first ! Great hole, too, number 13 which I think is
one of the great 3's I've ever played.

After ankle surgery (mid-1989) and tearing ligaments in the other ankle (again)
this year (march), i haven't put much time into golf. prior to the surgery
i was playing in the upper 70's to mid 80's consistently. needless to say,
my game was pretty sad. i had developed so many bad habits from the injuries
i was to the point of giving it up for awhile. i've played once a week
since april and my scores ranged from 80-105. the "best" round was not
the 80 but an 87 that i shot at Tucson StarPass TPC where they
host the Tucson Open.

I was 8-over after 5 and headed for another 100+ (get the gun!). I finally
talked myself into playing through it and staying with it. I finished the
side 10-over and was even par on the back through 6 holes. i missplayed
a couple of approach shots on the last 3 holes to finish double-
double-bogey. I didn't care...I had a great time and I survived a VERY
difficult course (target shooting w/ desert & canyons everywhere).

I'm not all the way back yet but as least I can see the light at the end

I shot 80 at Stow Acres South last Friday. That's my best score
on a "real" course. I'd sure love to take those two double-bogeys
off the front nine! Still, I'm very happy about it. It's the most
consistently solid round I've played. 41-39, one birdie. Hit 9 greens
and had 7 one-putt greens (obviously, not on the greens I hit in
    regulation, unfortunately).

It seemed like a very subtle difference in feeling from my usual
    85-86. I just knew I'd knock those 5-6 footers in. I made a sand
save, which I never do. I went into the woods once, found it, and
played the safe, smart shot to save a bogey.

I really wasn't thinking 79 -- although that's my goal in this game
-- until the 17th tee when I added up the score. I needed to play
the next two holes in 1 under to do it. I parred 17 and parred 18,
two-putting the green from about 25 feet. So, missed it by a couple
of feet, but I'm still thrilled about it. It felt smooth, easy,
and relaxed. I know I'll get that 79 before the season is over.

MH goes crazy on front nine !!! Not only did I finally break
the 40 barrier, I crushed it ! Shot a 37 Saturday evening on the
front nine of the Van Buskirk muni in Stockton, Cal. Had 3 birds,
3 pars, 2 bogies, and 1 double bogie. Only took 14 putts !! Made
a 20 footer for birdie on #1, a 30 footer for birdie on #7, and
a 3 footer for birdie on #9 ! All the putting and short game
practice has really paid off. Now to keep those O.B. drives in

    Got it!

Shot a 79, 41-38, at Marlboro CC on July 23. First time I've played
the course. I think that made me concentrate and play a smart game.
I hit a lot of fairways and greens. 3-putted both pars threes on
the front, or it would have been better. But the back! Ah!

I was one under after six, then missed a four-footer (downhill)
for par on 16. This meant I had two strokes left. Unfortunately,
I used them both up on the 17th, hitting my only bad tee shot of
the day -- a slide into the trees. I played a dumb punchout, which
didn't make the fairway, and had to scramble for a double. Now I
was rally nervous, needing to par the 18th for 79. It's about 185
uphill, with bunkers left and right. Not a killer hole, but not
an easy par at that distance. I thought about the tee shot for quite
a while. Took a five wood, swung easy, and.........nailed it right
to the middle of the green! Almost holed the putt! 79 at last!

I was ecstatic. And, of course, the end of the story is that I haven't
come close since. I've gone out at Sandy Burr and Stow North in
39 since that day, and blew up on both back nines. I think I'm pushing
    too hard, expecting another 79.

But I'll sure remember that great feeling of calm certainty. On
that back nine at Marlboro, I KNEW I'd sink the putts. I almost
holed a 60yard wedge on the 13th, and made the birdie. It was a
great feeling that I hope I can recapture.

And, of course, having achieved my goal, I then looked back on the
round and started thinking about the 4-5 strokes I could have saved.
    Never satisfied in this game.

except tee shot from either uphill, downhill, or sidehill lie.

While he was taming the 'monster' i was having my best round of the
year, a 76 (+3) over a 6500 yd course in County Meath, here in Ireland.
I was level after 11 and had an 8 ft chance to get back to +1 on 16 but
blew it and then bogeyed the easy 17th.
    Ah well ! Another day.

My stats were 2 birdies, 11 pars and 5 bogies. I took 28 putts, and hit
8 greens in regulation. I saved par from off the green 5 times.

I shot my best nine this year with a 45 at Passaconaway, on the
back. For one who played 2-3 times a year prior to this, all I
can say is that playing in a league helped wonders!

Nothing more than double bogey, all the way. But for a couple
bonehead shots, I could have been under 40. Had a couple birdie
chances, too, but I didn't capitalize.

But, then came Sunday. Playing at Millwood Farms, Framingham, a 14 hole

I play after work, and can only get 9 holes in before dark. The Pro

Had my best (and worst) nine holes of the year yesterday at Stow
      Acres (South course, blue tees):

		Front: 47 (+11)
		Back: 35 (-1)
		Total: 82 (+10)

Stow Acres has this special on the South course where a twosome gets
a cart for free. So, we drove off the first tee. Double bogeyed 4
of the first 5 holes, and bogeyed the other (+9 after 5). Decided
riding in the cart was for the birds, started toting my bag, was +2
      for the last 4 holes.

The back nine was a complete opposite of the front. I birdied 3 of
the first four holes, and was -3 for the side standing on the 18th
tee. I decided to play safe and hit an iron off the tee. Pushed it
long and right behind some pine trees, took two chip shots to find
the fairway, limped in with a double bogey :-(. -1 ties my personal
      best for 9 holes.

Shot a 78 (39-39) at Trull Brook on Sunday, my lowest this year.
I've had three 80's at various courses, a couple of 81's, 82's, etc. Each
time I seemed to blow-up when I approached breaking 80. On Sunday, I did
everything (drives, irons, chipping, putting...) fairly well, but nothing
exceptionally well. Had a disappointing double bogie on 18. Again, it was
the dreaded "I'm gonna break 80" syndrome.

The most encouraging point in all of this is that I bounced back
from a very, very bad day on Thursday at Sky Meadow. We had a pre-Challenge
Cup warm-up skins game, and I shot a 101. My Challenge Cup partner, Rick
Blaisdell, gave me some encouragement. I hit the range on Friday and
finally started to hit the ball again. I am not kidding myself, though.
Trull Brook is no Sky Meadow.

Well, I had my best back to back rounds of the season this past weekend
to go along with the best weather of the season... I had been struggling
a lot lately, but I think I have got the tempo back and just in time
    for Challenge Cup II...

It was our member/member tourney at Charmingfare this weekend (two day
tourney). I went out and shot a 76 with a double on the 18th and then
shot a 73 on Sunday (my second best 18 ever). I was hitting the ball
as pure as I have ever hit it and it felt GREAT. I was one over on the
front on Sunday and one under for the round going into the 16th hole.
The 16th is a 540 yard par 5, I hit two great shots and had about
70 yards left to the green, unfortuneately I started thinking about
    having a sub par round and totally forgot about hitting the ball..! :-{
I chilly-dipped it about 30 yeards and took a boggie and another boggie
on the 17th... :-{ It still felt great and I hope to have it still
working come Monday for the Challenge Cup...;-) Another guy in our
foursome (who is a 2 handicapper) shot a great 70, 2 under (must
    have been the weather)...

1st hole is 480 yd par 5, hit driver 260 yds, 3-wood to the green,
15 foot putt, no problem !!! The rest of the front side was a real
    adventure though, par-bogie-bogie-bogie-double-birdie-bogie-triple !!
The back nine was less adventurous with 1-par,7-bogies, 1-double.
My short game was awful or it would have been an awesome score for
    a 21. Net 65 isn't bad though.
Guess I should mention that I have been using a new set of irons
