860.0. "What Will You Pay?" by IAMOK::OCONNOR () Mon Feb 12 1990 13:15

I stopped by the Franklin Country Club in Franklin, Massachusetts to see if they
allowed golf outings there. I had the Spring Noters Tournament in mind. (That
is, after George Wright Golf Course wanted me to sign a paper saying that I was
personally responsable for all damage to riding carts and the golf course.)

Here is "The Deal"

-Minimum of 50 players. 10% leeway.
-Mondays only.
-Carts are required.
-$200.00 deposit required. Non-refundable 90 days prior to the event,
 except if course is closed.
-Only 18 holes allowed.
-Dress codes enforced.
-Ranger required.
-Steak or chicken dinner afterwards.
-No food or drink to be brought on the premises.
-Dates: June 4th, 11th or 25th.

PRICE TAG $85.00 per person.

How many of you out there think that it is worth it (any private club)
or not and why?

    I have played Franklin CC many times, and in my opinion it is not worth
    it. The people there are not very open to outsiders. The course is
    nice, but not that nice.

860.2Franklin CC ain't no Pebble Beach..LEDS::OBRIENRMon Feb 12 1990 14:585

	For $85 a head, I could play Skye Meadow, eat at the best
	restaurant in Nashua, and have enough money left over to
	cover the cost of all the balls I lost 8}

    	I'm not volunteering for anything, but just as an example, a
    friend of mine runs a 36 hole scramble tournament with cart for
    all 36 holes, for approx. 28 guys, and we pay about $45.00 each
    and that covers $10.00 a piece for prizes!!!
    	So in my opinion, $85.00 a person is way overboard! Not to
    mention, anything you eat or drink before or during your round,
    comes out of your own pocket.

    I agree with Paul Wellspeak.

    Why don't you guys come west?? You can plan any number of fine public
    courses for much less.
    We're talking Westover CC 4700 yrds great condition and 28.00
    for greens feess and cart.

    Or

    Chicopee CC. App. same price.

    Tom, last year about 40 people responded to an inquiry of mine for a
    Spring Noters Tournament at Crumpin' Fox in Bernardston. Only 15 0r 16
    actually joined. To say the least I was red in the face, however, Ron
    Beck, the Pro, seemed to take it in stride. As a result, I am
    reluctant to conduct a tournamnet outside of 495. Or, at a private
    course anywhere. Maybe you might want to volunteer? I will be willing
    to travel just about anywhere to play in a tournamnet.

    Tom T. meant to say 6700 yards, not 4700. Chicopee C.C. is a
    beautifully condiftioned course, and is fairly difficult. From
    the back tees it can eat you alive. Westover is a longer course
    but not as difficult, in my opinion. another fine course out here
    is Oak Ridge C.C.. They have 3 sets of mens tees, white, blue and
    gold. The Whites are short, the blues fairly tough and the golds
    are extremely difficult, but not always available. We play our
    36 hole tournament at Oak Ridge, usually from the blues. We play
    36 holes with a cart for under $40.00!!!
    	Greens fees, are certainly higher East of Worchester. By as
    much as 50% on some courses, and on average, I would guess 35 to
    40%. I don't have the time to organize antything out here, but
    could supply course phone numbers and a little info. if someone
    wanted it.

    I'd suggest Chicopee having played it last year with the maynard
    league. Maybe have a tournament of Maynard versus Westfield or
    somthing likr that. Anyway the course is really great and worth the
    trip.
860.11I'm ready, Let's Go!IAMOK::OCONNORFri Feb 16 1990 11:027
    I have scheduled a foursome to play Crumpin' Fox in the morning and
    Chicopee in the afternoon on Friday, May 18th, rain or shine. We will be
    going at it from the back tees. If there is another foursome that wants
    to accompany us maybe it would be worth a beer.
    Let me know.

    Rich,

    May 18th seems like a long time from now, but 32 holes always get my
    attention, so if more people reply and make another four, I am
    interested.

    Late thought: I guess this means you're no longer planning on a

860.14No Tourny.IAMOK::OCONNORTue Feb 20 1990 08:544
    I am going to pass on running a spring tourny. To many courses want the
    organizer to be legaly responsible for damages. That makes me nervous.
    Contact Peter Stopera for the 18th, I think that he needs a fourth.

860.15outing at Far CornersAIADM::CAMIRETue May 28 1991 16:3212
    I just made arrangement for our DEC League for an outing (we play out
    of Trull Brook) to play Far Corners in Boxford Ma at the end of Sept.
    We will have the outing on a Friday, green fees $20, cart $20 ($10 ea.)
    food (Bar-B-Q type) Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Salad, Corn on the cob, chips,
    etc. and renting a room for $11.54. You must also spend $7 per head in
    the pro-shop on gifts, comes to a total of $$38.54 per person. In our
    league you rent your own carts. We've played there for the past three
    years, nice course, great people to do business with and we always
    have a good time. If you'd like more info. let me know and I'll send
    you the Pro's name/telephone number and map how to get there....
