711.0. "Golfer's Warehouse/Spaulding Outlet" by ZAMMY::NANCYZ () Mon Aug 07 1989 13:34

    Has anyone had experience buying golf equipment at either the Spaulding
    Outlet store in Chicopee, Ma, or a branch of Golfers Warehouse in
    Springfield?

    Took a vacation day to drive to Golfer's Warehouse in Hartford,
    CT which was truly wonderful in terms of size and variety, but
    understand there is a closer one located in Springfield. It may
    have been a Nevada Bob's at one time.

    No not a nevada bobs'..

    I've been in there a couple of times. The prices are about the same
    as Nevada Bob's. It's located within a new shopping center off of
    RT 5 in West Springfield,Ma.

    	I am fortunate enough to live near the Golfers warehouse in
    Hartford. With the many golf discount stores in Ct. I would say
    that without a dought, Golfers Warehouse cannot be beat,( in
    connecticut anyway ). I am sure that you might find a better bargain
    on something here or there, but all around the warehouse is the
    best. Just an example, I bought a Ping lob wedge to fill out my
    set for 64.99 from the pro that originally measured me for my
    whole set. Come to find out, at golfers warehouse they had the
    club in stock, and a shelf price of 55.99, where as mine had to
    be ordered. Bought my "staff" bag from the warehouse for 29.00
    less than another store in the area..

    I would agree that the prices were good at the Warehouse- I saw a
    Stan Thompson ginty for $10.00 less than I had paid for the same
    thing at Wayland C.C. Pro Shop the week before. Wish I had waited.

    This is why I'm so interested in whether the Golfer's Warehouse
    in Springfield is as large inventory wise, since the prices are
    so attractive. Obviously some of the savings are gobbled
    up in gas when we have to drive to Hartford - and oh, that road
    construction! Springfield would be a little less painful.

    Am still hoping someone has had some experiences at the Spalding
    outlet, too.
711.4"Where RT#9 is next to Spag's"USMFG::TGLASSTue Aug 08 1989 15:334
    The is a companion to the Conn. store in Shrewsbury(west of Spag's
    and on the same side of RT#9).
    This store also has very good prices when one comparison shops.

     Tom, what are you talking about? Is there a new golf outlet right
    near Spag's. Has anyone been there?

711.6Somewhere in Shrewsbury!!BUSY::SWANEYis this the other side of Paradise??Wed Aug 09 1989 11:268

      I think the one Tom is talking about is in a farely new plaza
    down past Spag's(WEST) before the White City Intersection .

     Ive heard it's fairly good pricing

711.7Good buys here!SDEVAX::GRYGLIKWhen's our tee time?Wed Aug 09 1989 12:5016
    It's the Pro Discount Golf Center. It used to be in Framingham
    on Route 9 in an old gas station on the East bound side right before
    Rte 26. It then moved to the shopping center where Tony Roma's
    is on Rt 9 before moving to Shrewsbury in the late winter.

    They usually are pretty good on pricing. I bought two pair of golf
    shoes there this spring and they were $5-$7 cheaper than Nevada
    Bob's and NE Golf SUpply here in Marlboro. Golf balls are generally
    $1-$2 cheaper as well.

    They also run sales which are advertised in the Worcester T & G.
    When they have sales, you can't beat them around here unless you're
    in tight with a pro shop.

711.8"BEAUTIFUL DOWNTOWN SHREWSBURY"USMFG::TGLASSThu Aug 10 1989 09:329
    Just yesterday they confirmed that they are a "cousin" to the Conn.
    store and had several good bargin prices for gifts that we got for
    our son-in-laws birthday(you have to be a golfer to have a happy
    marriage in my immediate family).

    So, it can be a Leiser/Spag/Golf shopping trip all on the north
    side of RT#9 and within a block of each other in "beautiful downtown
    Shrewsbury".

     Is this place on the opposite side of rte 9 from Spag's, and in
    the Toys R Us shopping center ? I still can't place it exactly...

      Well I was there last night and like a BONEHEAD I forgot to see
    what the name of the place was . I did notice a large selection
    of clubs,balls and etc. The are located in Quinsigamond Plaza(or
    something like that. It's directly across rt.9 from Childworld or
    I.H.O.P, Dunkin Donuts. It's on the left of the Ski Market.

    The name is Professional Golf Discount Center in the Quinsigamond
    Plaza, Shrewsbury. It is on the same side of Rt 9 as Spags, and
    just past Spags heading west.

711.12Great Place!CLSTR1::VARLEYFri Aug 11 1989 10:545
     Thanks, guys!! I went there yesterday and picked up a bunch of
    last year's Foot Joy "Sta-Soft" gloves for $9.95! Don't go there
    looking for Medium Cadet size though; I got the last bunch!

711.13But back to the Question....FOOZLE::STANZFri Aug 11 1989 12:1711
    Hi Guys- this is the other half of "NANCYZ" in the base note- We're
    still looking for info on the Spalding outlet. Anyone in the western
    part of the state been there?

    I was born and brought up in Chicopee, and my grandfather worked for
    Spalding. My very first set of clubs was bought for me through his
    "employee discount". It was news to me that they had a factory store,
    and we're interested to see if they have any "bargains" as compared to
    Golfers Warehouse, et al.

    Again- anyone been there?
711.14Original Question PleaseZAMMY::NANCYZFri Aug 11 1989 12:236
    re .5-12

    Appreciate knowing all about Professional Golf Discount Ctr. in
    Shrewsbury, but surely someone out there in Westfield, Enfield etc. can
    tell me about Spalding or Golfer's Warehouse in Springfield which
    was the original question in base note.
711.15CLSTR1::VARLEYFri Aug 11 1989 16:224
     There's a place called "Fran Johnson's" in the Springfield area
    that might be what you're talking about...

711.16Spalding StoreRAIN::MOORESun Aug 13 1989 12:3719
    The Spalding Store is in Chicopee Mass. at the factory. I believe
    most of what they sell are "seconds" (i.e. golf balls @ $.50 each
    if you buy a gross). I also believe what they have in the store
    is what you get, you cannot order what you want. The prices are
    very good, but they may not have what you wnat in stock. They have
    all Spalding merchandise (baseball, basketball, golf, etc. and sports
    clothing. It may be worth the trip to see what is in stock. Call
    for store hours, they may even tell you what they have for clubs
    in stock.

    Also: Fran Johnson's Rt. 5 West Springfield and one in Hartford

    		- OK prices, they run a tent sale once a year (? Oct
    ?) and have some good buys

    	Golfers Warehouse Rt. 5 West Springfield and on in Hartford

    		Same deal as Fran Johnson's

711.17SA1794::TENEROWICZTMon Aug 14 1989 13:3723

    OK,

    		Fran Johnson's "Nevada Bobs" Golf and Tennis World.
    1050 Riverdale Rd. West Springfield,Ma.  (413)734-4444. Riverdale
    Rd. is also Rt 5. I don't know where your coming from so directions
    are a bit hard.

    		Frans Johnson's is on the western side of rt5. There
    is a shopping plaza on the east side of RT 5. Golfer's Warehouse
    is within this plaza.

    		The Spalding Golf Outlet is app. 5 miles from the above
    mentioned locations. I think it's only open on Saturdays to the
    public.

711.18Warehouse in CranstonAIMHI::CROCKETTTue Aug 15 1989 13:282
    There is a Golfer's Warehouse in Cranston, RI. I believe it is the same
    as the one in Hartford.
711.19Another Chicopee Native SonWFOV11::ABERTVerbal discourse is inexpensiveSat Aug 19 1989 04:5143

    Since my wife has been with the Spalding Factory Outlet for
    seven years now, I think can supply some information...

    The Outlet was formerly known as the "Company Store" - only
    employees and retirees has access to this store, and the store
    was open 2 days a week. For the past 2 or 3 years (time flies...)
    this Company Store has gone public.

    For current sales and specials one might check the Springfield
    Neswpapers for their ads. As Rich Moore stated, the inventory
    is not consistant, as they purchace merchandice from trade shows,
    production over-runs, new stuff "fresh" from the warehouse, and
    _yes_ some seconds. The vast majority of these seconds are deemed
    to be seconds due to damaged or missing packaging. In the past, when
    most of Spalding's products were manufactured in Chicopee
    (back in the days of the "Company Store") most of the inventory
    was indeed seconds, but since most of Spalding products are
    actually produced by "Licensees" (yes, the Golf balls and clubs
    are still made in Chicopee!), this no longer is the case.

    Business hours: Tuesday - Friday ---> 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
     			Saturday           --->  8:00 am to 12:00 noon

    Telephone:		(413)539-2056

    Address:		Spalding Sports Worldwide
    			Attn: Factory Outlet
    			425 Meadow Street
    			Chicopee, Ma.

    The Manager (Tony Pombal) is a great guy - if you are running a
    tournament and are in the market for prizes he usually does
    "wheel & deal" to satisfy the customer. The prices are very
    competitive with any Discount golf store, but keep in mind that
    this is a Spalding (correct spelling) only store, most of their
    inventory is Spalding label merchandice (which runs from coolers
    to golf sweaters).

    Nancy - I hope this helps!

    re .17-19

    We knew that someone would have the scoop on Spalding and Golfer's
    Warehouse---eventually!  Thanks for the data.

    Sounds as though the best place is still Golfer's Warehouse in Hartford
    in terms of size, variety and prices, but the next time we visit
    the inlaws in Chicopee we'll have to try Spalding.

    Thanks again.
