| Gotta go with Norman. Ths course is fairly wide open but has very
thick rough. It will be even thicker than normal, as it has been
raining every day except one for the past 10 days.
The first round start today was definitely delayed maybe even cancelled
due to water on the course.

| I watched the Open yesterday on ESPN for a little while. From
what they were saying it was a wonder that any golf was played
yesterday. They had thunderstorms that delayed the start until
noon. They didn't think the entire field would finish with the
first round yesterday. Some rookey was in first place with a
round of seven under par. The Golden Bear was in at five under.
They were allowing them to clean and place in the farways.
Boy it looked wet.

| CLARK BURROUGHS WON 33K ON LAST YEARS TOUR, LOST HIS CARD AND HAD
TO ATTEND QUALIFYING SCHOOL. WON APPROX 12K TO DATE THIS YEAR.
I WATCHED THE KID PLAY ON SATURDAY AND HE SEEMED TO FIND CONFIDENCE
IN FRONT OF THE CROWDS UP HERE. HIT THE BALL LONG AND STRAIGHT.
BOTH THE GOLDEN BEAR AND TREVINO LOOKED STRONG FOR THE ENTIRE 4
DAYS. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE GREENS WERE SO SOFT THEY ACCEPTED
THE BALL LIKE DARTS TO A CORK BOARD. THEY WERE THROWING IT STRAIGHT
AT THE STICK AND THE BALL WOULD NOT MOVE. ALSO THE FAIRWAYS WERE
SOFT WHICH FAVOURED THE LONG HITTERS. THE ABBEY HAS ALWAYS FAVOURED
THE FADE. PERHAPS THAT IS WHY TREVINO AND NICKLAUS PLAYED SO WELL.
I ALSO FOLLOWED JONES FOR ABOUT 5 HOLES ON SAT AND ON SUNDAY. THE
MAN WAS LUCKY THAT THE FIELD (NORMAN, STRANGES ETC DID NOT GET HOT
OR HE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN TROUBLE. HE NEARLY FAULTERED ON THE 18TH.
DAvE BARR WAS NOT A BAD PICK. BLEW A FEW HOLES ON SATURDAY AND
2 YESTERDAY. WHO KNOWS, MAYBE NEXT YEAR.

| Hi,
Loved the four rounds of under 70's that Jack Nicklaus had at "the
course he designed"!
That performance and having your son as your caddy must have made
for a great week for Jack.
He should do well at Royal Troon since both his health and his game
looks primed.
By the way, he is to play in the 1990 Digital Seniors!!!!!!!

650.9 | Free tickets are worth the money | TRCA01::ROSS | | Tue Jun 27 1989 10:14 | 26 |
| My wife and I went to the final round last Sunday. It was my first
time seeing the pros play. Loved it except for the heat. Lost 5
pounds through perspiration (pronounced S W E A T).
Cannot beleive how far Lon Hinkle can hit a golf ball. Watched the
top six two-somes go thru four holes. He was a minimum of 30 yards
past all of them on every hole.
It was interesting to see the gracious God-thanking Steve Jones
back on the first hole. He blew an easy chip and drove his pitching
wedge into the soft ground up to the hosel. He had to pry it out.
His language was not pretty.
Depressing watching Burroughs fall apart on the last three holes.
Would have liked to see him make the birdie on 18 to at least take
home second prize without sharing it.
It was fantastic to see my 'fav' Greg Norman.
I can't beleive how long Nicholas takes between shots. If it was
anyone else they would be given lots of warnings for slow play.
It was still great to see him play so well.
I was surprised how intense Trevino was. He is usually more jovial.
Must have been the heat. Herman looked like he was heart-attack
material.
Watched two fairly long drives on 16. It was surprising to see how
far Pavin and Sluman can hit the ball considering their slight stature.
Can't wait for next year.

650.10 | Is Jack being selective? | FOOZLE::STANZ | | Tue Jun 27 1989 13:13 | 10 |
| RE: .8-
I thought I read in Golf Digest this month that NIcklaus's
participation on the Senior Tour would be limited to events held on
courses that he either designed or participated in the design,
That would eliminate Nawshawtuc, wouldn't it? Did I read the article
wrongly?
