| If I had that set make up I'd swap between the 4wood and 1 iron....
On courses where I needed to be accurate or on windy days I'd use
the 1 iron and leave 4wood out...On wide open courses and not too
windy I'd leave the 1 iron out....but everyone is different...
I can't even hit a 1 iron...so it wouldn't do me any good anyway...

| I've been rethinking my position and figure that I'll put the five
iron in and at the course (depending on which one I play) I'll make
the decision. My thoughts now are that the course I'm playing tonight
has only one sand trap on it. That's right, one. The owner doesn't
like traps,Says they slow up play. Well it's his course. Anyways
seeing as I don't play the sand wedge from the turf I'll probably
opt to take the sand wedge out of the bag tonight. Tomorrow,
(different course) I'll probably take the three or four wood out.I
won't need the length from the turf.

I would probably choose between the 2 and 3 iron to leave out.
My set only consists of irons and the one I use the least is the
2.

| Tom,
If I were in your shoes, I would take the clubs out of my bag depending on the
course I was playing.
My bag consists of driver, 4-wood and 1-9, PW, SW, putter. I hit my 4-wood far
enough that a 3-wood would not make a big difference. The reason I keep the
4-wood instead of a 3-wood is for use in the rough. I don't have as much
trouble hitting a 4-wood out of tough rough.

| Keep all your clubs, but only carry 14 on any given day/round.
Which 14 clubs you carry, may depend on the course you're playing
and how confident you are or are not with a particular club.
For an example, I play a fade off the tee, and at times, when
I'm not hitting the ball well, ( 99% of the time ) :-), it can
turn into a slice. If I'm playing a course that has either a lot
of dogleg right holes, or a course that is very wide open, I will
bring my driver, and toss out the 2 iron for the day. But, if the
course has a lot of tight fairways, or plays mostly to favor a player
who draws or hooks the ball, I'll leave the driver out and hit 3-woods
and 2 irons off the tee. Other courses may play short and make
the attraction to carry more than 2 wedges with you.

Gotta play by the rules! If you hit a sub-par round with more than
the allowed number of clubs in your bag... or whatever may be the
best round for you.... it would be tainted because you didn't play
by the rules.
It's the same as plpaying illegal balls, clubs, etc. Where do you
draw the line? - play by the rules!

Playing a sub-par round when you have too many clubs in your
bag is impressive! That means that you shot at least 5 under
since the maximum penalty for too many clubs is 4 strokes! ;-)
(After all rules are rules.)

| As long as we are playing by the rules, how many people out there
claim a mulligan sometime during their round. Or ala Bobby Jones,
how many of us claim a penalty if the ball moves a tiny bit when
it is addressed. He called that on himself and lost a championship
by one stroke!! I play with few golfers with that kind of integrity.

I hope you aren't getting all worked up over this due to my comment.
It was entirely tongue in check. (Hope you didn't miss the ;-). )
I agree while playing practice rounds who really cares how many clubs
you carry. At one point on vacation this spring I had 16 clubs in
the bag. I was trying out a new lob wedge & had just bought a new
Taylor Made driver with a graphite shaft. Because I didn't feel
comfortable with it yet I also carried my other driver.
However, before my partner in the golf league has a heart attack
I have pulled my 2 iron & my steel shafted driver out for league
play. Because when you are playing in competition you definitely
are expected to abide by the rules.

It would be illegal if it did, since it has an adjustable shaft. ;-)
Maybe we should start a new topic. "How far do you hit your retriever?"

| I'd put the ball retriever in the same class as an umbrella. Neither
are used for the purpose of striking at the ball. (Are they? 8^) ) The
ball retriever's sole purpose is to save the golfer a couple of bucks
by salvaging otherwise unreachable and unplayable balls. Therefore, I
don't believe it should count as one of the fourteen.

No Larry, I wasn,t getting all worked up. It was just getting boring
reading all these notes that were busting this guys chops for asking
about carrying an extra club. If I am out playing for fun a lot
of rules go on the shelf. If it is a tournament or there is a wager
involved then it is a different story. I'm sure that I will get
blasted by someone out there for not playing by all the rules all
of the time but that's the biz!!

| I'm not going to bust anybodies chops about how many clubs they
bring each round, but I would like to ask a question.
When you play a pickup game of basketball, do you count each layup
as 3 points instead of 2? When you go bowling for fun, do you toss
4 balls instead of 3, or count a strike on 2 shots instead of 1?
Probably not, because it wouldn't be the same sport.

I could care less if anyone I play against has more then required
clubs. I don't care if they have to bags. At the caliper of play
I play at, and most people I play against, a few extra clubs isn't
going to make a noticable difference if any. The only rules I'm
concerned with are the rules that will give my apponent an advantage.
Personally I try to follow all the rules. I'm not an expert at the
game, so I'm not 100% clear on ALL the rules yet.

| Hi,
My bag has in it:
1.Wilson 1200 irons that were purchased in 1973 and have #3~ PW
2.Custom driver(wooden of course!)
3.Wilson 1200 woods(driver,brassie and cleek)
4.Sand iron that is a re-production of the old Spaulding dotted
face
5.Bulls-eye putter(sometimes replaced with a Nicklaus long job)
Still keep thinking about more modern woods/irons, but truely get
great results from these older Wilson 1200's.
