521.0. "General B/S - players" by MSEE::KELLEY (Custom clubs/club repair) Wed Feb 08 1989 12:33

Amazing how the activity in this notes file is directly
proportional to the weather...!!! Everybody has gone back
    	into hibernation I guess...

How about projecting a winner for the Hawaiian Open this
    	week end...!~?

Anybody think Calcavecchia will win yet another one (he
has two out of five this season). I am sure all you traditionalists
don't want him to continue on with his winning ways since
he uses what some call "hi-tech" clubs (Pings and copper-beryllium
to boot). He swings like is going to come out of his shoes,
(I would never do that!) but he is making GREAT contact as
    	of late...

Speaking of nice golf swings, seariously now, whose swing
would you most like to emulate...? My pick would with out
a doubt have to be Fred Couples, soooo smooooooth...!

    	Gene

BTW, my pick for this weekend, in staying with my pick for
the Golf Digest sweepstakes is Tom Watson (I hope he can
    	get his game together).

I like the way Tom Kite swings at his mid irons, then there is Paul
Azinger's wedge shots that I love, all body - he's a good example
of what to do to avoid the shanks. Off the tee, I'll have to agree
with Gene - Fred Couples (also my hero).

I don't care what clubs Mark Calcavecchia hits, even know I'm one
of those "traditionalists" Gene is talking about, but I do hope
    he keeps on winning.

My pick in The Hawaiian Open is my hero - Fred Couples, he's been
    right in there every week.

Gene is Calcavecchia you hero, I'll bet you both have to tie you
    shoes pretty tight.
521.2Horses for courses?EUCLID::WARFIELDGone GolfingWed Feb 08 1989 13:236
If you believe the horses for courses then the favorite must
be Cory Pavin. However I believe that this is the sort of
event that Lanny Wadkins will do at. Easy course, shoot out
	the lights.

    	Pete,

You were coorect in assuming that you were one of the
traditionalists that I was referring to. I must say that
Calcavecchia is NOT one of my favorite players.

You must admit that I don't have to tie my shoes quite
as tight as I used to...!

    	Ed,

Lanny one it last year and I wouldn't mind at all seeing him
    	win again this year...

My top ten favorite players would have to be...

    	Tom Kite
    	Tom Watson
    	Paul Azinger
    	Lanny Wadkins
    	Fred Couples
    	Ben Crenshaw
    	Greg Norman
	Gary Player
	Arnold Palmer
    	Jack (of course)

Not necessarily in that order and not necessarily for the
    	way they play the game...

If Hale Irwin can get hit by a ball again early in the tournament, he
    may have a chance :^)

    liked it!

I agree with couples swing...very smooth and truly a SWING

Also like Don January's swing...neither he nor Couples ever
force a shot because it seems as they both know what Ernest Jones
meant whe he said " Swing the clubhead...."

Somedays I feel as if the clubhead is swinging me...!!!

and O'Meara won't be playing in Hawaii. We'll have a new addition
to the winners list. Curtis won't be there either. Geez, if I were
a touring pro, I wouldn't want to miss a nice visit to Hawaii.

After watching the Hawiain Open yesterday, I'm convinced on how
to improve my score by 4 shots a round. All I have to do is to get
a crowd of people ring every green that I hit to and once it hits
some poor sole it will bounce back onto the green so I'll be looking
at bird instead of the boggy that I should have gotten.

For those of you who didn't watch it, the winner skulled a pitching
wedge over the green on the 18th, it hit a specator and bounce back
almost on the fringe, for which he chipped in for a 4 (bird).

    RE 13

This is a good point. It really makes me laugh when people
complain about those who take a preferred lie. When we hit a ball
we don't have 300 people watching the ball for us. The pro's couldn't
loose a ball if they wanted to. The fairways are manicured for them,
balls and equipment they use are the best money can buy. They don't
fight the crowds to tee off and have nothing else to do but practice
all day. " Well now here is Crenshaw 175 yds from the green and
he seems to be discussing with his caddy what club to hit". What
do you think Joe should i hit the 5 or the 6 iron? Well Ben I would
hit the 5 iron right at that lady in the blue sweater. The pin is
in the back and if you nail her or any of those fools standing on
the apron you'll be 10 feet worst case.
Maybe I should take my kids with me and have them stand on the apron
and stop any balls that go long, that's a stroke saver.
So you take a preferred lie , BIG DEAL, you still got a long way
to go to get even with the pro's .

521.15Take them when you're allowed, but not where their notSA1794::WELLSPEAKHe's old...and his skin is cold...Wed Feb 15 1989 07:1017
I'm all for taking a preferred lie, when playing in a league
or tournament, where it is legal and others are doing it. But if
you're playing in a league, or in a tournament, or even on a course
where the rules prohibit preferred lies, then you should never take
    them.
RE -.1 Why do you feel you should get an edge to get equal
with the Pros? When you play baseball or softball, do you get 4
strikes instead of 3, to get even with the Pros? When bowling,
do you get 3 balls instead of 2 for each box?
The Pros in Golf, are just like the Pros in any sport. Sure
they have better equipment and better playing conditions too, but
99% of them had to work very hard to get where they are today.
And don't forget, you don't have anywhere near the pressure on you
to play well, as a touring Pro does. It's his livelyhood, not just
something he does for fun. Although I'm sure he/she has fun doing
    it.

Re. -1, I think you are missing the point, when you bowl you play on the same
lanes as the pro bowlers do, they are not modified, when you play baseball the
playing field does not matter. But when you golf the course condition I feel
matters greatly, put a pro on green medows and see how well they putt.

    RE: .19

    Course lengths are deceiving...
most people only pay attention to what they read in the
paper or what is on the card for length...what is really
more important is how the course plays. This can be directly
affected by how it is maintained, and the pro's play on
the best maintained courses in the world. Golf in New England
in the winter gives me the roll on my tee shots that a pro
    gets all the time...ya know what..even I can reach a 459yd
par 4 with that king of roll. And I've done it for the
last two winter golf seasons at Sagamore-Hampton golf course
where they have a 459 yd par 4 which I've reached in two
many times the last two years under winter conditions i.e.
frozen fairways...where you get 25-40 yds extra on your drives
I think the point that the previous noter was trying to
make was that under the best conditions, YOUR HANDICAP
    SHOULD GO DOWN...not up!!
521.23Playing a pro course ain't all funXANADU::HUSTONWed Feb 15 1989 13:1727

Everyone saying that New England golf takes the roll out of the drives
thus making you not able to reach the par 4 the pro can reach because
of his roll is wrong. Did you watch any of the US open last year, or
ever go to or play at Pleasant Valley, how about even playing at
Ferncroft (Women pros play there every year.) Check out how narrow
courses are, how thick the ruff is then compare to the fairways and
ruff at local courses you play. True, professional fairways are alot
nicer, but look at the penalty they have for missing it.

Anyone who played Amherst CC 2 years ago when they had it ready for the
NH Am. They thinned down fairways, let the rough grow etc. For the most
part, these so called "good" golfers had alot harder time. They would
miss a fairway and pay for it.

Next time you go out, keep track of how many fairways you miss by
5-10 feet. Notice how thin and short the rough is? If you were on
a pro level course that same rough would probably be ankle deep and
    very thick.

I have seen a touring pro play a local club (Jim Hallet). On a course
that had wide fairways, a little thicker/longer rough than usual and
average local greens, this guy shot a 61 (-9). He had never seen the
    course before.

I take back my good point in the previous reply, if I were playing from the pro

the handicap as much as conditions would.

In .19 I was assumming the pros were hitting 75% or better on
their tee shots...this is what I have observed while watching on
    T.V.

It doesn't suprise me what Halet did, I expect a player of his caliber
to hit 75% fairways and 60-70% GIR and on a wide open course
    he should score that well...

re: all Don't misinterpert what I'm saying in .19
I think these players are the best in the world and are all
great at what they do...I'm just saying don't sell yourself
short when it comes to playing EVERYDAY, UNDER THE BEST CONDITIONS,
WITH THE BEST EQUIPMENT, etc. etc.

Years ago I saw an interview with a professional baseball player
on a T.V. show and the interviewer was falling all over himself
with questions about how good he was and all that stuff but the
professional said something to the effect that the best baseball
players, basketball players, golfers, etc. are out there in the
real world and only play at the sport because they have jobs and
other commitments...that he was the one who was fourtunate because
he was at the right place at the right time under the right circumstances
521.272 moreTALK::KEVINCustom Clubs & RepairWed Feb 15 1989 13:5526
I think that if we weekend golfers played a course set up like a tour
course, we'd find out how mortal we really are. Before a tour event,
they stop watering fairways, making them hard. More roll equals more
distance you say? Yes but where does it stop rolling? In the fairway
or in the rough? Since we don't hit them all down the middle, I'd bet
that we'd miss more fairways than usual. As a result we'd miss more
greens. Have you ever played a course with hard fast greens. Tour
players have come to my course and have remarked how the greens are
like a typical tour event. (slower than Augusta, the open but still
quick) Believe me my friends you have no idea what it's like. Perhaps
the best description would be putt down your driveway and try to keep
it 2 feet short of the street. Trust me I know these things. Yes the
playing conditions will have an impact on your handicap even if the
course is the same length as normal. The slope system does not take
factors like firmness of fairway, speed and size of greens into
account. I suspect that handicaps would go up.

As for playing the ball up or down. Unless you play on a course that
hasn't seen fert, seed or water since the summer of 63, I don't see
where it makes a difference. None of us can hit the ball well enough
that rolling it over makes a tinkers dam. There's one simple rule on
the golf course, you hit there, you hit out of there. If you can't hit
the club you want, go take a lesson and learn how.

521.28Do THEY play golf?ENGINE::WARFIELDGone GolfingWed Feb 15 1989 18:2732
I played the Disney courses a couple of days after the Pro's had finished their
tournament. The rough is tough. (I pity the course you play at if it is like
the fairways at the course you play at.) Also the rough generally surrounds the
greens and is very tight. You don't bounce balls on. Missing the green will
probably cost on average 1/2 a stroke because it will be tough to chip out of
the deep rough.

The pros do have advantages like galleries to help stop balls, find balls, and
stomp down the rough for when they really miss the fairway bad. The greens are
smooth. The fairways are rolled so that they generally won't get a flier off
the fairway.

However the good courses they play at are generally longer, tougher, harder
than the average course we play. I speak from experiene I've played Pebble
Beach, Spyglass, Harbour Town, Disney, Kingmill, Princeville, TPC at Sawgrass,
and Pleasant Valley. Every time I've played (from the whites, not all the way
back my score has taken a slight increase over my handicap). If the pro's
shoot up the course one year the next year they generally find that the members
have toughened it up, moved back some tees, sped up the greens, etc. No one
likes their course to be embarassed, especially on TV.

I read an editorial in Golf Digest that pretty well summed it up. The Pro's &
Amateurs play different games. Our scores would be better at our courses if we
have the benefits of the tour like conditioning, marshalls, etc. Their scores
would be worse at their courses if they had to play under similar conditions as
the average golfer. (Find your ball in a foot print, play it that may!)

Luckily this is one of those issues where there is not right or wrong answer
but golfers can argue over it after 18 or during the winter while we wait for
spring to arrive! :-)

re. -1, you're right, we could go down this rat hole for the rest of the
winter, but there is one thing I know, that is I just feel better playing
on a course where the tee's are like greens, and the greens are so smooth
that if I miss a putt, it's me that missed the putt.

I was a member of Charmingfare last year and they keep their fairways very
very long, last year The Country Club's rough was as high as our fairways up
there, and the rough - forget it, let's just say you didn't want to hit it

If you hit it into the rough at the U.S. Open, you'll need
marshalls just to find your ball!!! That's rough!!! And I have
a friend, Tom D. where are you???, who played Pebble Beach a year
or 2 ago. some of the stories he told were incredible. How, around
most of the greens, you were indeed better off, as the announcers
always say, to be in a greenside bunker, than in the rough around
the green. Tom is a pretty fair golfer, around a 6 handicap around
here, and he said you just could not keep the ball within 30 feet
of the pin, and a lot of times even on the green, when chipping
from the rough around the green.

Boy did I miss a lot yesterday. That's what I get for going skiing!

One thing I want to point out about the pros that seems to have
been missed. Yes, the pros play on very well manicured courses but
the distances and narrowness of the fairways and greens more than
make up for it. I played PV right after they had the Bank of Boston
Classic and I'll tell you the rough was a pisser. TV makes this
stuff look very deceiving. You get in that rough and you have to
hit 2 clubs down (4 iron instead of 6 iron) to get the distance
    you need.

I feel the only real affect the gallery has is around the greens.
Not too many pros stray so far from the fairway that they are hitting
from trampled grass. If they stray that far, they usually have a
    very tough shot.

About their equipment being the best money can buy... you know you
can buy the same equipment if you have the money and so desire.
If you are a double digit handicapper, I suggest you don't. Ever
hit a broken bat single in baseball? That's what most of your shots
will feel like using the pros clubs. Equipment does not help the
pros. They play what they can hit. They are fantastic ball strikers.
You may not score as well or feel the pros can score as well with
the clubs in your bag, but why should they use those kind of clubs?
You use them because you can hit them. The pros use their clubs
because they can hit them. Here's a neat experiment. If you ever
go into a club place that caters to all levels of golfers, find
the best set they stock (maybe Wilson Staffs or Sounder Tour Blade)
and then go to their practice net and hit a few shots with the 4
iron or 5 iron. Hit about 20 shots. I bet you mis hit at least one
and the club will let you know which one you mis hit.

The pros use Balata covered balls. I dare you to use them too. After
2 holes I bet the cover looks like it went through a meat slicer.

The point is, anyone can use the same equipment that the pros use
but this equipment is not suited for everyone. I had a 2 handicap
at one time and started using Balata covered balls and still had
to replace the ball every 4 or 5 holes. That gets expensive. For
1 shot per 18 holes, it was not worth it.

Another idea to think about: how many times does a pro really hit
a spectator and get an unfair advantage around the green? Those
guys are good. Out of 100 pros on a par 3, I would bet that only
5 would come close to the gallery and get an advantage. Personally,
I don't miss greens by inches to have a gallery help me. When I
miss, I miss deep in the gallery.

I feel what separates us from the pros is practice, practice, practice.
As it was mentioned before, their job is golf. The play golf for
their salary. The better they play, the more money they make. They
don't get an automatic $50,000 per year for being on the tour. When
they have made $50,000 they havce earned it. Curtis Strange did
not earn $1 million dollars last year by missing greens constantly
and getting spectator help. The man is a shot maker and he is a
    shot maker because of practice.

I am a software engineer by choice. They are pro golfers by choice.
Fruit for though: I spend 8 - 10 hours a day at my job. Imagine
what kind of golf I could play with that kind of dedication and
time? You can't play as well if you only pay weekend golf. And then
expect that you could play better with spectators surrounding the
course. I know it would not make a difference to me.

I've got to go along with Mike and Kevin on tour setup courses.
I played the Open course at Brookline last year and the previous
year (the rough was MUCH tougher the previous year!), the Open course
at Shinnecock, the British Open Course at Royal Troon several weeks
before the tournament, and Muirfield Village, and believe me, you
do NOT want any of 'em from the tips!!
With the fairways cut close, the ball sits down more than most
weekend players who sweep the ball would like. My idea of a typical
New England course that is first rate but with lush fairways is
Vesper. I played a practice round a few years ago with a friend
who was in the Mass. Amateur, and they were WATERING THE ROUGH!
No roll on your tee ball, and break your hands gouging it out of
    the rough!

521.35George Archer is HotADVAX::CLOSEThu Feb 16 1989 15:1417
I've always liked George Archer. Maybe because we're the same height,
weight, build. I've kept an eye on him since he won the Masters about
20 years ago. He's won a few, been competitive for a stretch, slipped
back, and kind of disappeared. BUT - have you noticed the finishes
lately? He's been in the top 10 in a few tournies this year, and always
    finishes in the top half.

Now, George is 48 years old. He's playing highly competitive golf with
the youngsters on the regular tour. Lee isn't. Jack isn't. All the
press is about how Trevino will rip up the seniors.

I have a prediction -- old, plodding George is back, and he's
improving. I predict that he will come in in the top three in a regular
tour event this year or next -- and two years from now Archer -- not
Trevino -- will be the Monster of the Seniors.

    You heard it here first.

    Hi,
I agree that George Archer will do well as a senior golfer. Anyone
with feet that big need have great balanceers for their swing!

Seriously, will Lee or Jack be "hungry" enough to play for the Senior
Tour purses? George is one that has alot to gain and he still hungry.

We had an old Lab retrieving pheasant for him during this years
PV tournament(down at Slaterville). He was called a great shot there
    due to his great eyesight.

Ever seen a winner that liked to lose, had poor eye/hand coordination

Well, George Archer finished a little above mid-pack in the San Diego
yesterday. 69-69-71-69 I think it was. Another steady outing against
guys half his age. If he stays on this game and keeps grinding he could
end up like Chi Chi -- a guy who was never a standout on the regular
Tour, who then makes a fortune in the Seniors. I hope he does.

I think Lee is targetting the Seniors as his playground. But Nicklaus,
as he admits, is now only a "ceremonial" golfer. I think he plays to
keep his name out there, and to boost his other businesses.

    Although he's a relentless self-promoter (read Boswell's "Strokes of
Genius; great book anyway, with good stuff about Player"), I've always
liked Player. I followed him during practice at the open. He hit his
approach into the incredible rough on the right side of #11, right at
my feet. He came up to play it, took this battered old sand wedge. I
asked him how he would play it. Real nice guy -- he turned to our area,
and game us a short lesson. Told us what he'd do, then did it. Put the
ball about 3 inches from the cup! Then he stayed around for a while,
practiced the shot a few more times, and gave us a few more tips. I was
impressed with his willingness to give something to the crowd. He
didn't have to, but he did.

Well, after watching yet another tourney covered by CBS
(the Doral Open) I have to say that I feel their covered
leaves a lot to be desired...! You would think that there
were only 12 people playing in the tourney and you didn't
even get to see all of those 12 even...! They showed the
entire leader board only once (that I saw)...

Couples had a good tourney, now if he could only get rid
of those few mental lapses on some of the greens...! He
even out drove Calcavecchia by "52" yards on one hole,
and Calcavecchia felt that he hit his onw shot pretty good!

To bad Calcavecchia fell apart on the last hole. Actually
both Calcavecchia and Glasson fell apart a little on the
back nine, they were both 15 under at one point and Glasson
finished at 13 to win and Mark ended at 10 under in a three
way tie for third. Couples came in second...

Gene, I didn't get to see any of it on Sunday, but I thought
the coverage on Saturday was okay. They showed mostly the last
5 r 6 groups, but realisticly, to show more, they would have to
be on the air 4 to 5 hours. Most people are just like the galaries
there, that is they want to follow the leaders. So that's usually
what television provides you with. They showed the leader board,
at least the top 10 or 15 golfers, at every commercial, before and
after the commercial. I thought it was okay.

I really prefer to watch golf on ESPN during the first two rounds
of golf. I find myself glued to the TV. On sat. I find myself
switching to a different show every so often.

On ESPN you get to see everyone on the course when they are
broadcasting. If they make a great shot or a lousey shot you see
it. It makes me feel better to see the pro's screw up like most
hackers. They may not hit the bad shot to often but they still hit
    them.

On the weekend coverage they only show you the leaders and rarely
show you a bad shot. You didn't see three different angles of
Mark C's show going into the water yesterday now did you. It like
they only want to portray the image of "Perfect" golfers. The only
time you see someone on the weekends mentioned that is not a leader
is when they hit a great shot. Hole it from 200 yrds. or sink a
    60ft. birdie putt.

Like I said I prefer ESPN. You get the great and the not so great
shots. (I couldn't say BAD, Nothings bad about a round of golf.)

521.61Shoot out...MSEE::KELLEYBuy 8 irons get the 9th free...Mon Nov 06 1989 08:3440

Did anybody else see the shoot out yesterday?

It was an interesting format (I hadn't seen it in the two previous
years that it was held). Ten players teed off on the same hole
(Tom Kite, Payne Stewart, Paul Azinger, Scott Hoch, Steve Jones,
Tim Simpson, Jack Nicklaus, Fuzzy Zoeller, Ben Crenshaw, and
Chip Beck). One person is eliminated on each hole (the worst score
is out). If there are ties for the worst score on a hole then all
players that tied have a shoot out, a chipping contest with the
player that ends up furthest from the hole is out...

There was a LOT of joking around (with Fuzzy being there what else
could you expect) and gimmes for the first few holes and then as
they progressed there was less of both.

The final three players were Jack, Beck, Azinger. Then Jack was
eliminated on the next to the last hole (they only play 9 holes).
In fact when Jack was eliminated there was a three way shoot out
and he only lost by 1 to 2 inches to Azinger...!

On the last hole Beck and Azinger both made par, so it was down
to a shoot out (BTW, the difference between first and second was
$50,000 - first place being $90,000 and second being $40,000).
$50,000 riding on one chip....!!! Well, my money would have been
on Azinger in ANY chipping contest and against anybody. But on this
    	day Beck was victorious....!

For those that did see it what are your thoughts on the format?

Oh ya, I didn't mention how they picked the players. The take
the first "available" five top money winners for the year
(Kite, Stewart, Azinger, Jones, Beck) 3 players that are the
top winners for the year in a certain sponsors events (I need
help here as I am not to sure about this nor who the spons
was) (Crenshaw, Simpson, and Hoch) and two exempt people that the
    	sponsor picks (Jack and Fuzzy).

        Gene,

I caught some of the shootout. Actually, I kind of liked the
format because it was different. This tournament and the one that was
put on by Peter Jacobson, a couple of months ago, were interesting to
me because they offered a chance for the viewers to see and hear the
pro's in a somewhat more relaxed atmosphere.

I liked the opportunity to see their "other side." In earlier
comments, I have been critical of Curtis Strange's behavior on the
course. When I watched and listened to him during Jacobson's outing, as
well as being interviewed prior to the playoff at last year's U.S.
Open, I found that Curtis has the ability to become almost two
different people. The tournament Strange and the natural Strange, a
rather funny and very likeable guy.

Guess that's what works for him to be a success.

Due to the enormous purses offered in some tournaments, a
players position on the money list could be skewed by a win
in one super payoff tourney. Did David Frost win the Sun City
Challenge last year by any chance ? That has a $1,000,000 1st
place prize. He also won once or twice on the pga tour last
    year I believe.
What this brings to mind though is what does position
on the money list have to do with who is the "BEST" player.
Do all the statistics charts mean anything ? Usually the
people that lead in all the categories are players I've never
heard of. Some players can't play on the Florida courses, others
avoid California, some never go to Britain. Shouldn't a player
that we would consider for "BEST" be able to play (AND WIN)
anywhere, anytime, under any conditions ?

What decides who is the best player? Good question Mad Hacker...

To win uder any circumstances would be the ultimate challenge.
But no one can/will do that. The golf game is made up of so many
variables that can influence the end result. The many types of
grass, sand, air thickness, winds... would all have to be learned
exact. Along with mastering the mental aspects of the game. I often
look at teh epson stats, wondering where Dan Pohl is? Why isn't he
or other Epson stat leaders always in the top ten? Dan does it all,
better than the others. Winning the most money says a lot about the
players ability, because with huge cash rewards, brings the best
competitors... with their best efforts. If you're cashing in, which
the ALL want to do, then you're shooting some great golf.

     Gene,

That over simplifies. A lot of good players on tour come in
2 - 10 a lot but hardly ever win. Maybe some variation on how they
are calculating Vardon points this year, where your score is
weighted against the rest of the field.

Maybe some calculation like 10 pts for 1st, 9 for second, etc.
down to 0 * the major factor (sum of major championship titles
held by contestants) divide the whole thing by the number of
	tournaments entered.

Using a formula like this Nicklaus would be near the top, he doesn't
play many tournaments, but plays the tough ones, and has walked away
with a lot of hardware. When he didn't he was usually in contention.

After all how many of the really good golfers play the Greater
Greensboro Open, Pleasant Valley & the like? A number, but no where
close to the numbers that play the US Open, Masters, TPC, etc.

    re:- top ten finishes.

I disagree with the top Ten premise. I think that from the money
point of view the number of top Ten finishes is the measure of success,
but when considering whether a player is a world beater or a potential
one , then the number of top 3-5 finishes seems more accurate.

Tom Kite is currently the biggest money winner in history, made
from an abundance of top 10 finishes rather than victories. However,
Tom Watson ( i think i can compare their careers from the time point
of view ) has won many more times than Kite , eight of which are
    major c'ships.
I think that there is a question mark over Kite's place in the history
of the game, the same cannot be said of Watson.

I will agree that the number of top 5 finishes may be a more accurate
measure of the top player (it would be interesting to see how much of
a difference there would be in names on each of the two lists). I have
a hard time buying your point about a person that has more wins but
less top ten (or five) finishes being the better player. IMHO, the
person with the wins (particularly winning a major) just gets far more
    publicity.

It is very difficult to tell how someone is 'off' the course, when all
we see of them, is when they're 'on' the course, and obviously under a great
deal of pressure. Different people handle pressure in different ways.
But also, remeber, those comments about Normand being a ____head, are only of

521.99A few who like NormanSA1794::WELLSPEAKWaiting for you to come alongTue Jun 12 1990 09:3329
I do remember how it was described to me how Norman was informed of
his 1st victory this year. On Sunday around noon, he was at the driving range
hitting balls getting ready for his round. It was a rainy day, and the next
thing he knew, Paine Stewart walked up to Norman and with a smile, reached out
a hand and said to Greg, "Give me some skin!!!". Norman, hadn't realized but
the final round had been canceled and he was deemed the winner. Stewart was
only 1 shot behind Norman going into the final round. Now to me, that doesn't
sound like something someone would do, to a guy he didn't like and respect.
So you see, there is someone who "likes" Greg Norman. Now you have one who
dislikes him, and I have one who likes him. This doesn't mean he's a nice guy
or a bad guy. Just that everyone has an opinion, and no "ONE" opinion is
worth any more than another. Now a bunch of similar opinions have more weigth
behind them, but I haven't seen that yet, so I'll wait with mine.
I'll also relate another story about Greg Norman that I heard. It was
during a practice round on a Wednesday before a tournament. Norman was
playing a practice round with Nicklaus and someone else. On one hole, Greg
was about 10 feet of the green in some deep rough. The crowds were very close
to the golfers, as it was a practice round. Norman hit his pitch, and it
roled 20 to 25 feet by the pin. One of the spectators near Greg commented on
it not being a very good shot. Norman replied by asking the fellow if he'd
like to try and do better. The guy replied yes, and Norman gave him his wedge
and a ball. The fellow the pitched the ball to about a foot from the hole, to
which Norman replied, "Great shot" with a smile on his face, and proceeded to
get the crowd to applaud. He then shook the fellows hand, and went on with
his round. Now there's one fellow who will never agree with you, that Greg
Norman is not a nice guy. I'm sure that guy will never forget that moment for
the rest of his life.

Just to add some more to the argument that one opinion does not make it
a fact, there was an article in Golf Digest this month about the guys
who cover the tournaments with those hand held cameras. One of them is
Davey Finch, and here is a direct quote from a guy that works with
Norman on a regular basis: "I have my favorites, too," he says.
"Fuzzy, Greg, Tom Kite, Blaine McCallister, they're all very friendly,
    even in cruch time."

I believe that we all have a tendency to project a little of ourselves
into others. Maybe the guy who had nothing good to say about Norman
was having a bad day and not Greg.

    Food for thought.

521.103Part of the job descriptionCURIE::TDAVISTue Jun 12 1990 15:2931
The negative story on Norman isn't all that surprising, I don't think.
To be a pro takes a lot of dedication and hard work. To be dominant,
as Norman is, among that select crowd, requires an intensity that few
of us mortals will ever comprehend. Line up the great men and women of
every era and every pursuit and they may stretch from tee to pin on a
long par 5. But remove from those all but the ones that are without
eccentricity--particularly of social nature--and they couldn't span
the green.

In his prime, Nicklaus wouldn't have won any Mr Congeniality awards,
either. I know, as a vice-presidential candidate once argued, Norman's
no Nicklaus, but he's as close as anyone has been since Watson was at
his prime.

Norman is no fool, either. If you have to be in the spotlight, it
behooves you to put on a nice show of it. Fame and fortune are fickle
lovers, but extremely generous if you court them well. Being nice for
the camera isn't phony, it's business. We know politicians don't kiss
babies because they find their bald little heads irresistable, yet we
EXPECT it of them. We expect our sports heros to show they are one of
us--only better--and we're irritated if they don't. Many of the
tour's faceless grinders aren't aware of--or choose to ignore--that
connection to their fans. They're not doing themselves or their
professions any good. But Norman seems keenly aware of his role.

In fact, it's that self-consciousness about how he is perceived that
may prevent him from ever realizing the greatness that alludes him.

It's ironic. What the game needs now more than saints are one
or two GODS. Even if they're as dour-faced and unapproachable as Ben Hogan
was.

Rick,
You're entitled to your opinion, and I feel no bad feelings toward you
for it. I just said that I don't think it's fair to label a person, based on
one other persons feelings toward him. The one other person being the

talents on the course, and I'm sure you wouldn't have said that after he
finished 2nd in only 1 tournament and you had never seen him play before that
or heard of him before that, so I just wondered why you would judge his

your own.

It is amazing all the condemnation on basing an opinion on one person's
report. Did it ever occur to the Noters that the one person could have
credentials that would make one and all take not of his opinion? There
are people in this world that I would stake my life on their opinion.
If you don"t know anyone like that, then I pity you.

Does it make any difference, what kind of person Greg Norman is, when
you see him play golf? Most of the touring pros that I have met and
interacted with, I do not consider to be very great people - but they
play golf a lot better than I do and are fun to watch.

Personally, I never found Greg Norman to be very interesting to watch
on the course. I follow Davis Love III, JACK, Lee Trevino and some
others, but never Greg. T.C. Chen, when he had the hole in one at the
LA Open, and holed out two approach shots in a four hole stretch was
exciting. Greg always seems to be scrambling to overcome a lead -
maybe its too much like my own play, therefore its not interesting to
    me.

It appears Nicklaus had 7 victories in both 1972/1973....but

he lead the PGA Tour in victories per year a record eight times and
shares the record with Palmer for consecutive years winning at least
one PGA event - 17 years each....

521.122Norman = Cobra...?!MSEE::KELLEYGolf club repair/custom clubsWed Nov 14 1990 09:0512

While in a local golf retail shop last night I heard that
Greg Norman has bought or bought into Cobra (golf co.). He
is no longer using Spaulding equipment. This would explain
the driver I saw him using in the last tournament I saw him
in (I think the Nabisco), it had a white head (now it is
apparent that this is a Cobra product)...

Anyone else hear anything about this...?

    	Regards

He switch over about mid-summer. He went through a little slump
with his irons when he made the switch.

ESPN reported that Norman .."received an unspecified piece of
Cobra.." in exchange for him playing with them and doing adds.

Not sure how accurate that report was though......Shane

521.126Trevino quips about greens at Ranch ParkLABC::MCCLUSKYWed Nov 21 1990 13:1214
During the Senior's Tournament, sponsored by Security-Pacific and
Digital, in Los Angeles, two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to follow
Lee Trevino for several holes. The tournament was played at a public
course maintained by the City of Los Angeles, Rancho Park. Rancho Park
was the site of the LA Open and where Arnie took a 12 on what was then
the 18th. Any way, Lee was complaining about the "...bumpy greens...".
After four holes he said, "We get to play this course for free, think
about those poor bastards that have to pay to put these things." He
was looking right at me with my "Rancho Park" golf shirt and my demure
6'5", 240lbs. frame in the front row. He got a great laugh. In case
you missed it, Dave Hill took it away from Gary Player with a string
of birds on the back nine. Great tournament.
