509.1 | Better with a team point... | MSEE::KELLEY | Custom clubs/club repair | Thu Jan 26 1989 12:00 | 13 |

The format that our league uses is the same as yours with the
addition of low individual total for nine and low team total
for nine (both net scores), making a total of 20 possible points.
I have played in a league where the format was two man teams,
but you were only playing for 1 point per hole for best net
(there was no team point per hole).
I prefer having the additional team point, it keeps both players
in the match on every hole...

509.2 | A point for low gross per whole??? | DSTEG::SOUZA | TANSTAAFL | Thu Jan 26 1989 12:31 | 10 |

Gene,
Is it suppose to be one point for low team net and one point
for low GROSS??? The way I thougth we played last year was
one point for low team net and one point for individual low
net on the hole. (ie Handicap taken into account for both
points)

Thanks for pointing that out Steve, I just reread the base note
and noticed that one point was for low gross. In our league all
points are based on low net, one point low individual net and
one point for low team net per hole, plus the low individual
total for 9 holes (net) and low team total for 9 holes (net)...
My apologies for the confusion (I hope I got it right this time!)...

| Jim,
One of the formats we tried at Polaroid that seemed to be effective
also involved two-person teams.
You played for three points per hole using net scores:
A1 vs A2 1 point
B1 vs B2 1 point
Team A vs Team B Best Ball 1 point
A total of 27 points possible and...
To alleviate the tendency to pad a handicap there was an incentive
tied to your net score - if you were below or even par using your net score
then your point total was unaffected but if you were over par using
your net score then points were subtracted from your team total.
It was very possible to have a negative point night. It did tend
to keep people a little more honest about their handicaps since
there was pain involved during the padding process.
No system really works. The 'schemers' always manage to find a loophole
and get the system to work for them against its design or intent.
Good luck with your search (Hope to see you in July)!

In the Springfield League we play for a total of 21 points per round.
Two person teams. You play your apposition for one point per hole.
With a two person team this adds up to a total per round of 18 points.
The remaining three points and for Personal Low Nets and team low net.

The PSG League (Merrimack/Nashua) consists of two flights of
seven two-person teams. Each week the teams play each other for
three points, total. Whichever individual wins the most holes,
gets a point, whichever team wins the most holes get a point.
Halves get 1/2 pt. This past year only 2-3 of 14 teams were out
of playoff contention (top 3/flight) before the final week. Seems
to work great, as long as the handicap system is fair.

Here in BTO we play a 4 person team format, with a series of points
awarded for everyone.
1/2 Point for a Double Bogey
1 Point For a Bogey
2 Points for par
3 Points for birdie
etc........
Each player carries an "Average" based on the points he or she should
get every week. If everyone on the team hits their average for
the week the team accumulates 18 points.

Slight correction Shane. Each PLAYER should accumulate 18 points. Par
on all 9 holes .eq. 18.
This system is really aimed at the higher handicapped golfers. It's
easier for a new(er) player to contribute to a team without the
pressure of playing head to head. When we were starting the league
(Yes I once did play in the DEC league) we (the officers) were all
low handicappers (3 or 4) but we expected the average to be like 12
or 13 (for 9 holes). My feeling was that the league would never get
off the ground if some people got a ton of strokes in a match and still
got beat into submission. So I proposed this quota system so that
everybody could contribute to the success of the team but nobody would
have to take the heat of loosing a match 5 and 4. As I said this is a
good system if the handicaps are high. However it stinks for the lower
handicaps. At a 4 handicap I needed 7 pars just to break even then 2
bogies for 20 points. That means I have to shoot around 38 all the
time to help a team. On those nights when I shot 42 or 43, I might
as well have lost a match 5 and 4.
This method of scoring is good IF you have the right makeup of players
in the league.
