<<< USER$1:[NOTES$LIBRARY]GOLF.NOTE;1 >>> -< The Good Game >- ================================================================================ Note 18.0 Shoes 13 replies ODIXIE::BUTLER 11 lines 21-JUN-1986 03:10 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I an considering the retirement of my OLD Dexter golf shoes. I would like some information on shoes such as Tretorn, Nike, and any other good shoe for walking. The reason for the Dexter shoes was due to the size: 12 A. Thank You, Tim River North Macon, Georgia ================================================================================ Note 18.1 Shoes 1 of 13 BEING::MCANULTY 11 lines 24-JUN-1986 03:00 -< ETONICS...... >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- re .0 I have a pair of Etonic. There leather, I bought them on sale last year for 55.00 They are super comfortable. Etonic has a good line, but it depends what type you are interested in, wing tip type, leather, I suggest going to a dealer, trying some on, get comfortable, and check for the best price. /mike ================================================================================ Note 18.2 Shoes 2 of 13 STK01::LITBY "Per-Olof Litby, CSC Stockholm" 8 lines 24-JUN-1986 13:31 -< More shoes >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have Etonics too - bought 4 years ago and still like new. The best and most comfortable shoes I've ever had - including street shoes. I'd definitely recommend Etonics if you want classically styled shoes. If you prefer the lighter, more casual shoes I would recommend Tretorn - they also have 'indestructible' spikes. <PO> ================================================================================ Note 18.3 Shoes 3 of 13 GENRAL::GIBSON 15 lines 24-JUN-1986 17:39 -< More on Etonics >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I too had a pair of Etonics. I had the light weight tennis shoe type. Be forwarned, if you get a pair of the soft bottom shoes with metal spikes and metal inserts that the spikes screw into you might not be able to get the spikes out without destroying the bottom of the shoe. This happened to me and several other people I know. They either are put in too tight at the factory or rust in. If you want the light shoe I suggest the Foot-Joy Light Spike. The inserts are made of either a nylon or plastic and the base of the spikes are also a plastic. Several friends have had them for a couple years now without the problem of the all metal spikes. I also now own a pair and they are very comfortable. HOOT ================================================================================ Note 18.4 Shoes 4 of 13 ODIXIE::BUTLER 9 lines 25-JUN-1986 20:23 -< Spike or not >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank You. How about spikeless shoes? Is your foot hold the same, better, or worse? I will check out the Etonics line at the pro shop. Tim ================================================================================ Note 18.5 Shoes 5 of 13 CIM::ED "Ed Hacker @IAC DTN 443-3851" 10 lines 25-JUN-1986 23:30 -< Spikes or Spikless! >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think they are better! I have been wearing spikeless Etonics for two years and they have the following advantages: 1. Lighter 2. Less sticky keep me from swinging to hard! Ed (one of a few true) Hacker ================================================================================ Note 18.6 Shoes 6 of 13 PISCES::GAUDETTE 4 lines 2-JUL-1986 18:49 -< I like Nike >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I recently purchased a pair of Nike's and found them to be very light weight and comfortable. Worth checking out. Peter ================================================================================ Note 18.7 Shoes 7 of 13 GENRAL::GIBSON 8 lines 2-JUL-1986 20:48 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE: Spikeless shoes. Check with your local course to see if they are allowed. Here in Colorado Springs the public courses don't allow you to wear them. HOOT ================================================================================ Note 18.8 Shoes 8 of 13 PARITY::LAPLANTE 6 lines 11-JUL-1986 20:26 -< Foot-Joy Ultra Lights >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have been wearing a pair of Foot-Joy Ultra Lights. They are light weight like a track shoe. They have the soft sole with plastic threads on the spikes. Also, they are waterproof. Check them out. Bill ================================================================================ Note 18.9 Shoes 9 of 13 SSDEVO::LIPP 6 lines 11-JUL-1986 23:08 -< FJ and BC >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My husband has the Foot-Joy Ultra lights and I have the Bobby Clampett light shoes. Both are tennis style and do very well on the hard ground out here in Colorado. I prefer the spikes over the spikeless, plus the golf courses here don't allow the latter anyway. Nicki ================================================================================ Note 18.10 Shoes 10 of 13 DICKNS::F_MCGOWAN 9 lines 22-JUN-1987 21:10 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just discovered this note (only about a year late). I'm amazed to hear that some courses don't allow spikeless shoes. What's the reason for that? As for their effectiveness: I've worn Etonic spikeless for two seasons, and the only disadvantage I've seen is when the course is damp (like this past April), where they have a tendency to slip and slide on full shots. Other than that, they seem very adequate. You can also put 'em on at home and drive to the course (which saves a bit of time when you get there). ================================================================================ Note 18.11 Shoes 11 of 13 BEES::SCHLIESMANN "Barry Schliesmann" 6 lines 23-JUN-1987 13:39 -< depressed on the green >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think courses object to the depressions in greens made by the rubber spikes. I have seen some pretty nasty foot marks from that type of shoe, but nothing that could compare to the scuffs and hacks made by conventional spikes. Ofcourse, marks from metal spikes result from foot dragging and other human faults, while rubber spike marks are generated without effort from the wearer. ================================================================================ Note 18.12 Shoes 12 of 13 DICKNS::F_MCGOWAN 10 lines 23-JUN-1987 16:28 -< The rub(ber) of the green? >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE. 11 Hmm, I guess the courses I play on aren't all that fussy. To be honest, I've never noticed any depressions on the green caused by rubber spikes (I've seen lots of depressed people on greens, usually including myself, after 3 or 4 putts). It's just never been an issue for me and it surprised me that others had a problem. I guess I'll just file it under "questions not to ask when you sign in at the course, 'cause you might not like the answer." ================================================================================ Note 18.13 Shoes 13 of 13 EAYV05::WEED 19 lines 24-JUN-1987 12:47 -< Rubber shoes >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now and again, I caddy for my cousin on the WPGA circuit when it reaches Scotland. Caddies are not allowed to wear ordinary spiked shoes for fear of scuffing up the greens which is understandable - theres a large fine for any girl whose caddy wears spikes. However rubber spiked shoes are allowed which is quite surprising as I find that they tend to leave a lot of depressions on the greens over here which are, more often than not, pretty soft even at the height of summer. From a playing point of view I find them ok to wear apart from the (few) times when the fairways get really burnt by the sun and a sort of glaze appears on them. This ususally happens on the seaside links courses I play on. Then its like trying to play with roller skates on. Mike roller skates on. <<< USER$1:[NOTES$LIBRARY]GOLF.NOTE;1 >>> -< The Good Game >- ================================================================================ Note 83.0 Footjoys??? 3 replies MPGS::POND 8 lines 19-MAR-1987 04:56 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am looking to buy some footjoy shoes. I haven't been there but it must be within a mile of the Kittery Trading Post, since all the factory outlets are in one of the mini malls there. I saw an ad for the grand opening of the Kittery store and they had listed some coupons to get additional discounts off may items. I think I saw somewhere, that a Nevada Bob's is supposed to be opening in Salem, NH sometime in the future. Hope it's soon, since I live there. I have no dought in my mind that if you got a good pair of golf shoes instead of a pair of sneakers that you would play a little better. Better stability, balance, and obviously less slipping. I will never forget the sight last year in early March, playing for the first time at the Cape, a person in the group in front of us actually fell on his duff when he took a swing at the ball.....!!!!! He obviously had not played much golf before, but...!!! Gene

You gotta have shoes with steel spikes. Not even shoes with nubbies will get it. Some courses out here in the the Valley of the Sun will only allow shoes with spikes. Don't see how anyone can play with sneakers (even Air Jordans) when the grass is wet with dew or frost.
466.4 | Spikeless Times | BOSTON::MURPHY | Dormie | Tue Jan 10 1989 11:04 | 34 |
I believe that for most situations golfers should wear the standard set of golf spikes while on the course but here are a few instances that you might want to think about that favor sneakers: (1) There are times when players get into those 'swing ruts' where nothing they do seems to help them. I have been there and on occasion have found that going to the practice range with a pair of 20 year old Converse sneakers (aged just so there is absolutely no tread on the bottoms) to regain my swing balance and tempo. I had read about (and admired) the swing and grace of Sam Snead and actually believed the mythology about his playing barefoot as a youngster as a key to his lasting, effortless swing. This practice can also help during a round giving you something to focus on - you just can't take that same wicked swipe at the ball wearing sneakers without ending up in traction. (2) Most winter golf situations do not favor the use of spikes - especially frozen ground. It is quite easy to turn an ankle in falling off your spikes that have not dug into the frozen tundra. (3) When either you don't know how to walk in them or when you are tired. There may be nothing worse (perhaps with the exception of the crater/footprint left in the sand trap) than following a group of clods dragging their feet on all 18 greens. Spikes tend to give you an advantage on full shots primarily by anchoring your right foot (for righties) through impact and the early stages of the follow through. I can picture Greg Norman losing his back foot on the 18th hole of the '86 Masters costing him his final chance for victory against Nicklaus. If you are comfortable playing in sneakers then by all means continue to do so. It is still possible to learn a swing and develop your game without spikes - just ask Snead....

I keep three kinds of golf shoes. Dexter Lakewoods for sloppy days, Dexter Olympics(?) (the classic all leather dress-like shoe) for great weather, And Nikes for quick trips to the driving range and as spares. ALL WITH SPIKES!!! I wouldn't consider playing without them. For this reason I have a pair in the trunk of both cars!! Rick

Well in defence of spikeless shoes I use a turf shoe. I found that I had a problem with comfort with the spiked shoes. In three years of use I can honestly say that I haven't had one problem with my feet slipping during a shot. I have slipped walking but not during shot making. I have two pair of shoes. One that I play in and one that I wear at the range. I have played in cold,rain,sun.... morning noon and afternoon. I never suffer and discomfort. Tom
466.8 | Shoes for every occasion... | DINSCO::BURKE | Jeff Burke | Sat Jan 14 1989 05:49 | 33 |
I have golf shoes for every occasion, and I use all of them. My tournament shoes are leather and are worn only in nice weather, not necessarily just in tournaments. My mud shoes are great in the spring, when I have early morning tee times, and whenever the weather is wet. These are the most practical shoes in the lot. My casual shoes are used when I just plain feel like hacking around. They are very comfortable for 36 holes and are not bad in mud. My new addition is the house shoe. Now these shoes drive my wife crazy. I like to use the spikeless shoes for practicing in the house, at the range, and hopefully when I take some lessons this season. Haven't you noticed a difference with your balance when practicing in socks or with your golf shoes on? Yup, golf shoes have heels. Regarding the "spike" versus "spikeless" issue, I am a "spike" advocate. I played one round with the "spikeless" at New Seabury this past fall. The spikeless do not seem to provide the same traction. I found this to be the case on tee areas that might be a little wet and have been trampled to death. Then again, golf *is* a mental game. If you feel confident without spikes that's great. Jeff Tournament Shoes -- 3 pairs of FJ Classics (white, black, w/b saddle shoe) Mud Shoes -- 1 pair waterproof Etonic saddle shoe (w/b) 1 pair waterproof Etonic whatevers (beige) Casual Shoes -- Nike "sneaker-type" when wearing shorts, etc. House Shoes -- Dexter leather spikeless (black)

I am just getting my mind back into golfing as the warm weather it upon us, therefore my two cents on this subject may seem a bit late. My comments regarding spikes is simple and straight-forward. Buy a pair!! I speak from experience. I used to play in running shoes and I like to play in light rain (because I am a duffer and I can practice shots as long as I want, cuz I have the course to myself). Two years ago, as I shot an iron towards the green, my left foot slipped on the wet grass, and screwed up my knee. The injury kept me off the course for 5-6 weeks. Buy the spikes and pray for rain. maybe .1 has the right idea playing in sneakers....!!!! I believe it was sam snead that said when he's been out there playing a while and starts losing his tempo he go's back to his farm and plays BAREFOOTED....this he says reminds him that balance on any shot is the most important thing....!!!!you can't kill that little white ball if playing barefooted caus if you try you'll end up on your duff... maybe those of us that feel you "gotta have spikes" and "it'll take strokes off your game" should try 9 holes with no shoes...i.e. barefooted and see how our tempo and balance improves...and our game...!!!

re .2, .10 The major contribution of spikes is in allowing one to over swing at the ball yet maintain enough control to still look good and wonder why one is not doing very well. About 4 years ago I sunburned my feet and could not wear shoes. I played two league matches bare foot. My score was Significantly lower than my handicap. Then I put my spikes back on and started to shoot my handicap again. So I took the spikes off. I don't hit quite as far but the shots are significantly better. Now I can tell when I'm overswinging and backoff. Lately I've wondered if I should go back to spikes. But I haven't found any driving need for it. Dj
