392.0. "GOLF,GOLFERS and the NEW GENERATION" by OURVAX::GLASS () Thu Sep 15 1988 10:37

My grandson and myself went to the later part of yesterdays ProAm
at Pleasant Valley. It was a lovely day, crisp air and the course
was in very fine shape for the holes we viewed(i.e.13 thru 18).

My grandson is 12 and just starting to get into golf and to "worship"
state like many of us are with sports heroes. Well, he got a great
intro to the PGA player as you will read about.

We watched the groups headed up by Sam Randolph, Curtis Strange,
Steve Pate, Bobbie Clampette, Tom Byrum(and his wife/new baby),
Bob Lohr(from Miami of Ohio-the CRADLE of COACHES), Chip Beck and
George Archer. These young pros are not only very talented but with
the best of manners that bring much to the game and my grandson's
impression of the PGA. They truely remind me of young "CEO's"!

Sean was "bitten-by-the-bug" and I saw a much different type of
pro than that we followed as young men in the 1950's/1960's! I
still love the seniors, but this new breed has alot to offer our
    fine sport.

As an adjunct, Cecil Breton is selling classics at the non-clubhouse
road entrance to PV. He has some very fine MacGregor woods amd a
fine set of re-gripped/re-shafted MT irons from 1954 that are playable.

When I (hopefully) someday have a son I will encourage to take up
golf at a young age. Not just so that he can play and enjoy the
game himself for the rest of his life, but so that he can have some
decent role models in sports to look up to. I guess I'm a little
disenchanted with the sportsmanship and "class" displayed by many
professional athletes both on and off the field. The game of golf
and the profesionals that we watch seem to have much better qualities
    than professionals in other sports.

392.2Old George ArcherADVAX::CLOSEFri Sep 16 1988 14:3517
Unless there's another George Archer on the tour, big George is
48 years old and soon to play on the Senior Tour. He won the Masters
back in the '60s. His distinction for a long time was that he was
the tallest player on the tour. I always identified with him for
that reason, and followed his career.

He's had many lean years recently, but I've seen his name starting
to show up in the top 10 or 15 in some PGA events. His game seems
to be coming back. I hope he hits his stride in two years and wins
lots of money on the Seniors.

BTW, re: .1 I have a 17-month old son. He sees me cleaning my clubs,
and swinging around. I let him play with an old 7 iron the other
day. He loved it, so I got him some small plastic clubs. It's wonderful
to see him swatting at the plastic ball. I've never told him what
    to do -- I don't want to push -- but he's very imitative. I can't
wait till he's seven or eight and old enough to get started.

    Sorry about that!!!!!!
George Archer(of the very big feet) is by no means a younster and
    should have been so identified.

       Tom,
I also agree with you. A perfect example happened at the
Bank of Boston Classic on Sunday. I brought my 5 year old son with
me. We were on the 18th fairway just short of the dogleg when George
Burns came by. After his second shot, he said something to his caddie
and then motioned for my son to come over. As he walked down, the caddie
reached into his bag (I knew what was going to happen) and handed
something to George. Well, when my son got to the ropes, George
handed him 2 golf balls. Greg, my son, was thrilled ! Needless to
say, a little boy's first tournament will always be a fond memory
because of a simple act of kindness.
