293.1 | Bad Mouthing the Irish | FUNBOX::RESKER | | Mon Jun 13 1988 14:43 | 7 |
| Apparently there was an article in the magazine which defamed
the Irish-Americans of Boston. I heard it said something about
not being able to walk in Boston without tripping over a drunken
Irishman. A few people of Irish descent are a little upset. I
don't blame them, but don't wait for the ACLU to come to the rescue.

| In all fairness the article is a tongue in cheek story about the
people who initiated The Club (upper class, mostly of English descent).
It was written by an Englishman, hence the dry wit. I had to read
it a second time to figure that out. I can see people being upset
about it, but it's not cause to storm City Hall.

Read the article today. Ironically, I probably would never had
even seen it if it hadn't been for all the attention. The
article is in incredibly bad taste and stereotypes the Irish
in a mean and degrading way. If humor was it's intent, they
the author failed miserably.

| After reading the article (and having read many of his columns before
this one), I don't believe he is guilty of malicious intent. He is
guilty of poor writing in this case. Remember when All in The Family
(Archie Bunker) first came out? Many people thought the show really
intented to insult many different ethnic groups when it was really
trying to point out the stupidity of bigotry.
I think Dobereiner was trying to do the same thing but just wasn't
skillful enough to pull it off.

In yesterday's Golbe Dobereiner is quoted saying that expects to be fired
from both Golf Digest but their sister publication in the UK Golf World. He
basically felt that the tone of the apology GD printed in the paper was so
strong that they wouldn't be able to take any other position. (Basically the
GD apology said that the article was in very bad taste and they should not have
run it.)
My $.02 worth is this would be a tragic mistake. Why is it that now a days we
always invoke the death penalty when someone who is bright & talented does
something stupid? I think that Dobereiner is a good writer who wrote the
article without malicious intent. At worst he should be taken to the wood
shed and then told not to do it again.
As a male WASP I generally don't appreciate the sensitivity of many Ethnic
groups to this sort of humor. The sad thing is that when you really thnk about
it he was right on the money on how many clubs tried to keep out people with
improper breeding. The ironic part is that once these groups have melted into
society they in turn become participants against sucessive groups.
My advice is for Golf Digest to lay low on this issue. In a couple of weeks
most everyone will have forgotten about it. Then they can all go back to doing
what they do best; writing a great magazine on a great game.
Now I'll get down off my Soap Box.
