143.0. "55 chevy ..." by IAGO::PROVENCAL () Thu Sep 01 1994 10:18

Hi,

My husband and I are going to look at a 55 Chevy (4 door) that someone he knows is trying to sell. It's
supposed to be in pretty good shape. The underneath is clean (no rust).. It needs tlc to make a it nice rod..
some body work/paint, re-upholster interior, etc. I think it has a 6cyl motor, not sure, but think
it's the original one. Supposedly was rebuilt a couple years ago. Anyways, the guy is asking
$2400 for it. Said it rides really nice.

Any suggestions on what we should be looking at. Any ideas of the price range for these types
of cars? I guess I'd have to have it appraised in order to get a classic car loan.. so that would
give me an idea of it's value.. but if he's not even in the ballpark, I'd rather not pay for the
appraisal.

Has anyone out there had Gerry Martel from Fitchburg do an appraisal? How was he to deal with?
How good/accurate was the appraisal.

Thanks,

Cathi P. (Always wanted a 55 chevy)

Look INSIDE the rear fenders for signs of body filler. The 55-57 Chevrolet
inner fender wells are not fastened to the quarter panel. They only "come
close" and there's a rubber flap that fills the gap between the fenderwell
and quarter panel. Dirt and moisture gets on top of this rubber and rots
(the Chevy Circle) the quarter panel away.

There are ONLY two ways to repair this damage. 1. hammerweld a partial
quarter panel on 2. replace the entire panel.

ALL other alternatives are merely patches and don't last very long.

Less than 10% of the 55 - 57 Chevies in New England escaped the dreaded
Chevy Circle rust epidemic.

Unless this is a southern or southwestern car, it's probably full of bondo
and will cost you 10K to get to a printable state.

Then, again, if you're not interested in trophies (except at cruise nights
and Lions/Elks/Rotary/Chamber of Commerce etc. car shows) then grab it
and drive it.

If you want show quality, be ready to pay for it in the 55 - 57 Chev. $2400
isn't going to buy you a decent body. A "driver" for that money is
probably a bondo wagon.....especially if it's "just been restored last
year".
