61.1 | `74 AMX stats?? | SALEM::FISHER_T | Am I transitioned or fired?? | Tue May 14 1991 14:04 | 14 |
| I created this note in order to ask an AMC question.
How rare/desireable are the '74 AMX's? (Mind you this
is not the horrible rebadged Hornet version, but a Javelin
bodied car) I ask because there is one sitting in Leclair's
salvage yard in Chester NH. Not in bad shape either. It
also has what appears to be a factory fiberglass hood. Car is
an auto with console, and has a *MINT* dash with full guages.
Interior is pretty good, body dented but not too rusty.
Can't get the hood open so the motor is a mystery. Any of you
AMC nuts care to clue me in on this car? Mike Moroney??..............

| There were 4980 '74 AMX's made.
What engine does it have. The 401cid was still offered in '74 and I
think is pretty rare in itself.
I don't have any info on current values...

| The 71-74 AMX are worth less than the 2 seaters of 68-70, as the '74 AMX was a
package on the Javelin rather than a separate model. They are worth more than
a base Javelin, and the bigger the motor, the better. Since it is an AMC,
it is worth quite a bit less than similar cars from the Big 3, so don't expect
to fix it and sell it and retire. Actually offhand I'd say a few hundred
bucks for a repairable car. I'll check ads and Old Car Price Guide tonight
to be sure.
The 7th digit of the VIN is the engine. Offhand H or N is 304, P or S is
360 and X or Z is 401. This is from memory, I'll verify this tonight.
If you get the hood open there's a tag on the pass. side valve cover with a
number on it, the 4th digit is the engine code. As valve covers are swappable,
the only way to be sure of the engine size is the number cast into the sides
of the block below the exhaust manifolds.

| Mike,
I wasn't really interested in the value as much as it's
interest to other Musclecar fans. I just hate to see
good cars go to waste. If I ever have occasion to visit
LeClairs again I will check the VIN. If it turns out to
be a 401 car I'll let you know.

61.12 | resto question | AKOCOA::DENINE | | Tue Jun 25 1991 02:50 | 17 |
| I have a javlin sst I am going to restore . I need some help though
After doing some research on the vehicle I found out it was originally
a 360 2bbl it came with a factory 4bbl and manifold on it when I bought
it. It also has the go pack hood with it .The question in need of
anwsering is if I were to do the following mods to the vehicle
would it make it any more desireable and worth any more in value .
Here is what I would like to do . Install the go package on the
car along with the side exhaust system .These were both factory
options on the car for that year .Other than the 2 bbl this car
is well optioned even has the 3:90 trac lock posi Cant figure
out why it has all this and 2BBL anyhow your help and suggestions
would be appriciated .Also I dont know how to add a new topic to
the file and wanted to put this under a topic for something like
restoration facts and tips or something like that.Mod or anyone
who thinks it sounds like agood idea could you add it to the dir.
Thanks :*)

| Without the original window sticker or build sheet there's no way to prove
whether a particular car came with or without most options, as long as
you put only stuff that was available for that year, the colors match etc.
There isn't really much desire for a "confirmed 100% original" car anyway
unless it's really nice, unlike the "matching numbers" Vette crowd. So
any options that were originally available for that car will make it more
desireable.
What is the 7th digit of the VIN, I can confirm whether this was originally
a 2bbl or 4bbl car. Also the # on the pass side valve cover will indicate
what that engine originally had on it.

| Can anyone tell me the difference between the 2 bbl 360 version
and the 4bbl version.The 360 2bbl version is rated at 9.5 cr
and the 4 bbl version is rated at 10.25cr . I was under the
impression that the only difference in the 2 and 4 bbl version
was the heads.I was also told the only difference was the valve
size.If this is true than The intake and exhaust runners as well
as the combustion chamber volume would be the same.So were does the
increase in compression come from .I know the smallblock chevy
but am not familiar with the AMC engineering .I want to built up
my 360 mildly enough to propell my javlin into the mid 13's.I
intend to do some suspension work also run 3.90 gears And use
the stock exhaust manifolds run into factory side exhaust. If any
one could fill me in on wich heads are better and how well
the factory cast intake manifold is it would save a lot of head aches
on my part. Also I am free to any other info you want to share.

| re .14:
I'm pretty sure AMC got different compressions by changing pistons. My Machine
390 and my ex-beater 70 Ambassador 360 2bbl both have the same casting numbers
for the heads.
For performance you want the dog-leg heads. 70 and later V8s. The 304 had
smaller valves than 360/390/401. For bolt-on compression, the 70 and early
71 heads are best as they have smaller combustion chamber sizes than later
heads. I heard that certain later heads flow better but I am unsure of this.

61.21 | '70 AMX questions | ATSE::PALMER | DTN 264-3164 | Thu Nov 14 1991 09:17 | 22 |
|
I am somewhat interested in a '70 AMX that I can buy pretty reasonable.
Its without motor and some other drivetrain components I'm told but the
body, frame, interior, are in excellent condition.
Since I'd ONLY be drag racing with a small block Chevy in it, this sounds
like the perfect car but I need to know some particulars about this car
before I even get any further involved, even to look at. It's somewhat far away.
Can anyone tell me if this is a full frame car?
What did it come with (to the best of your knowledge) for a stock engine?
What type of rear end does it have (stock) and will it hold up to 500HP
with a set of slicks? I know I'd have to change axles at least but is the
rear itself capable of drag racing abuse or would I have to change to a 9"
Ford?
Whats the weight of these cars in stock trim?
Whats the wheelbase?
Finally, would I be better off just buying it and reselling it to an AMX
'nut", which I am not. I just think it might make a good drag car but if its
worth more selling it, I may do that. Any ideas to its worth as I said, sans
drivetrain?
Thanks for your help.

Dick,
While no AMX expert myself, these cars have a very short wheelbase,
and excellent weight transfer in a drag race configuration. Witness
the sucess of the AMX in Super Stock during the late sixties/early
seventies. I'd say you should give this car serious consideration -
particularly if the price is right. If nothing else, it might be nice
to have something "different" at the track. The world already has too
many 10 second Novas, Camaros, Mustangs, etc.

61.23 | AMX info | RAMBLR::MORONEY | Is the electric chair UL approved? | Thu Nov 14 1991 15:00 | 30 |
| The '70 AMX was available with a 304, 360 or 390 V8., all 4bbl. The 390 was
rated at 325 hp, don't remember the HP of the others offhand. The VIN will
identify the engine (and transmission if not obvious), the 7th digit identifies
the engine. X is 390, I don't remember the others at the moment. The 3rd
digit M is 4sp, A or C is automatic (Borg Warner),
The AMX is quite light, this and the short (97") wheelbase means you may have
to take provisions against 'wheelies' at the HP you are talking about. The AMX
(and all AMCs of the time) are unibodies. I'll look up the weight tonight.
The '70 is the rarest, and depending on options and condition it might be
worth some to an AMX nut. 390 4sp is worth the most, followed by 390 auto.
Rally pack (gauges) are worth some, you may be able to sell these separately.
Check the paint code (bottom of driver's door, where it meets door jamb), if
it's 00 or SPEC or SPECIAL the car is a special run of some sort, might be
obvious if it's the original paint. Engine code Y also indicates a special
high power 390 engine (don't know if any '70s came through like this)
Disk brakes and some engine stuff indicate a Go Pack, makes a car worth some
more.
The rear is an AMC design used with V8s. I honestly don't know if it can
take 500 HP with slicks I think it can. It's likely to have limited slip.
Likely to be a 3.54 or 3.91, or 3.2 something ratio.
I'll look up what I didn't answer tonight. A parts place has a guide to
estimate the value according to options.
It ought to be a good drag car. I don't know the specifics of putting a
small Chevy in it (sacrilige! ;-))

kind of made me sad to realize the Little car company from Kenosha
