35.4 | have 389,won't sell | VSSCAD::SOOKIKIAN | | Tue May 19 1992 13:18 | 15 |
| I've had a 389 sitting in my garage since 1979 waiting for the original
in my 64 Bonne wagon to die. A year later the left frame rail had to
be replaced from front to back wheels ($400 at Central Welding in
Waltham, Mass). Three years later the right rear control arm brackets
rotted away ($150 at Billerica Frame). In 1984, after ignoring pleading
cries to look under the rocker cover, the dry push rod punched a hole
in the rocker arm and caused the retainers to drop the valve into the
cylinder. Lesson: Don't try to get 200K miles without removing the
rocker cover at least once, certainly not when loud clacking tells you
something is amiss. Also don't stop the engine in spite of the racket
as long as it's running, get it home. Why didn't I use the long saved
spare into it. Well, because after 20 years of NE salt the body needed
extensive plastic surgery. Will I sell the 389? Probably not. Why?
Same reason I won't sell my 1953 illuminated Chief Pontiac hood
ornament.
