2337.0. "Patch cords. What defines a good one ??" by MPGS::HASTINGS () Fri May 11 1990 14:37

      After buying an 8 track I'm now confronted with plugging my
     F/X into my patch bay. I want the best cleanest signal possible
     and I now every bit counts, including the patch cords.

      I am very fustrated over what really makes one patch cord better
     than the other, isn't wire...wire. I went and bought some cords
     today but took sometime in the decision to buy them. I had a
     choice of a Peavey 6 pak 1' for 11.99 or ONE Pro Co 1' for 6.99
     I just finally said &*$! it and bought the Peavey's.

      This is why I wrote this note. Is 6.99 for a foot of cable and
    2 plugs worth it? Are thoughs cables really that different in
    characteristics?

      What makes a goo patch cord? What brand of cord would you
    recommend?

      Your input will be greatly appriecated... There will be one less
    fustrated musician in the world. But in this business it won't
    last long....

    I make my own out of RS connectors and 75ohm coax.

2337.2I use Cramolin to clean 'emPAULJ::HARRIMANIt's a dog eat dog food worldFri May 11 1990 15:297
	The big hoo-hah over gold connectors is that they don't oxidize
	quickly, which I guess keeps the connections from becoming noisy
	resistors. I use Cramolin on the plugs and jacks, which supposedly
	cuts down on this natural tendency. Seems to work for me...

2337.3even MORE flaky???MILKWY::JANZENTom 228-5421 FXO/28Fri May 11 1990 15:354
    I always buy those incredibly cheap pre-builts from radio shack
    unshielded rca phonoplug to phonoplug and use 'em until they get
    more flaky.

    It depends so much on what kind of equipment you're running and what
    your expectations are. If you're talking a portable 4 track, cabling
    should be the least of your worries. But if you're setting up a studio
    with a decent recorder then high quality patch bays and patches make a
    big difference in CONSISTENT sound quality.

2337.5This is what I got and my expectations.MPGS::HASTINGSMon May 14 1990 12:2918

      I have a Fostex R8 8-track and looking for the best sound possible.

      I want to get into the business and figure I should try and get the
    best inorder to get return business. I use all 1/4" with the exception
    of the R8 having all RCA input/output jacks, into a FURMAN patch bay.

      .4's title "1/4" and RCA's are LOUSY connectors" how many other types
    are there for home studio use? What ones might you reccommened.

      I am planning on upgrading to bigger and better things if and when I
    get established.

    I hate flakey cables so I always use good quality cables with
    Switchcraft connectors. Try Rapco cables. If you buy them in
    quantity Wurlie's will give you a good discount.

2337.7better yet...MAIL::EATONDFri Jun 01 1990 16:355
    ... and if you buy them at MacDuff's in Shrewsbury, MA, you'll not even
    need to ASK for a discount. Best prices I've ever seen.

    Now that I'm not in the area of MacDuff's anymore, can anyone recommend
    a good mail order source for good quality audio cables that won't cost
    as much as the mixer their connecting to?
