NEXT time, get those little plastic things that are like sophisticated
garbage ties -- you can get them at an electronics store.

| Lighter fluid should work as most of them have naptha in their
formulas. It is a great solvent, but EXTREMELY flamible.
You might also try kerosene. (Much safer)

2127.7 | Gaffer tape? | ELMST::KOMISKY | | Fri Sep 22 1989 21:08 | 5 |
| A guy at Lasalle's used to work on a film production crew and said
there is a special gaffer tape sold at movie equipment stores that
prevents the problem completely. He said they don't have the time to be
cleaning cables gummed up by duct tape.
Has anyone ever seen this kind of tape?

| Would any of these solvents ruin the cable itself? Somehow I thought
that "organic solvents" and "rubber-like materials" didn't go together
well. I'll give it a try ... (and luckily I *don't* smoke!)

| If you have (fake-)rubber-sheated cable, you'll need to do a two-step
process.
First, clean with any of the solvents mentioned above. I personally
find TexPads (used to clean tape drive heads) to be the most effective.
Gasoline/lighter fluid both work better, but smell nasty.
You'll also need to clean the petrolatums off the cables, or they'll
weaken the sheath. I just use a bucket of warm water with Murphy's Oil
Soap ... and a rag or soft sponge, of course.
As for re-strapping, I'd avoid tape like the plague. Use velcro or
cable-straps (some folks call 'em tie-wraps). You can get them at any
electrical supply or at an electronics store. You'll need to keep a
small pair of diagonals handy to clip those things, though - they're
really tough. Good luck.

I vote for Velcro - available in sewing shops by the foot for a LOT
cheaper than what music stores sell it for (.49/ft-.99/ft as opposed
to 2.99 for six inches). You don't use as much, no diagonals needed,
and you can reuse it.
TEAC rubber cleaner/conditioner seems to work on cables as well.

Gaffer's tape is much like duct tape but with a different glue that
doesn't stick as well. It's also more expensive.
Mineral spirits (like Thin-X) cleans them up quick and won't hurt the
cable.

with special pens that can write on whatever it is vynyl.
They appear on our products.

| Radio Shack sells some of these wire ties with labels on them
(to allow you to write down what the cable is or is for).
I often use 30 to 50 cables at a live gig & it's a nightmare
when the cables grow into a single-color mass of wires. I color
code (with colored tape - up to 3 colors at each end - I get the
tape from Radio Shack also).
