...and if he had been killed by a "lone nut"?
If you want to plant yourself in the path of a world leader and shout at
him, expect to be brushed aside. The only point of interest in this is
that the PM had to do it personally.
Derek.
(PS. Just for grins, try to get that close to Clinton while "protesting")

Perhaps Clinton doesn't ignore his Secret Service escort and strut off
into a crowd...nahh......perhaps he has the grace to not blame his
staff when he has a bad day and loses his cool. That's a petty
performance whether you are a "world leader" or the head of a sweep-up
crew.
The jerk that stood there yelling had nothing to do with it.

him be on his way. I side with the RCMP.

protecting our head of state. He better not be charged, and that little
slug whiner ought to be arrested.

"less than effective" .... more like pathetic and embarrassing.
This is the leader of a country we're talking about here, not some
corporate executive. There is no excuse for allowing anyone that close.
If there's a possibility that the PM may wade into the crowd during
some public event, the RCMP should have the resources to support it.
Only in Canada.

| there was a blurb on the news last night that 1 of the 5 people
(whoops, OFFICERS) was missing on the fateful afternoon so they were
'playing short-handed'. Barf, a cop misses a shift so the Prime
Minister has to shove his own way through a crowd? I think who ever is
in charge of the PM's security needs a posting to the Yukon over this.
It would not phase me a bit if 'we' couldn't get physically near the
PM, especially in a crowd. If you choose to even try it, I hope you
get more than a chipped tooth for your troubles. I was waiting for
a billy-club to come down on the dunce. I find it hard to believe this
guy is contemplating laying charges, he should be charged for wasting
space.

The way people generally treat politicians at rallies, its suprising he
hasn't stiff-armed someone a long time ago.
I'd rather see Jean's 'man-o-the-people' act than Mulroney's ivory
tower positioning.

I for one have never considered Jean Chretien a great "head of State".
The little "street fighter" from Shawinigan Sud is just living up to
his name. The RCMP was told to let him have his way regarding lax
security compared to other countries. He is paying the price now
for the ability to mingle, or in fact go have a midnight snack
from the fridge at 24 Sussex in his skivvies. Better carry a
soapstone carving wherever you go in this case.
IMO of course.

| Oh I see, because ***YOU*** don't consider him a ***GREAT*** head of
state then he deserves whatever happens to him. Including apparently,
finding someone in his house in the middle of the night. I feel
confident that he did not request the RCMP to let anyone who wanted to
enter his house in the middle of the night, so please explain how
"letting him have his way" caused this to happen. So I can find it, please
show me where it is written that because you don't want strangers
inside your house, that they cannot protect you from the outside ?
Why not just tell us your agenda, and quit beating this dead horse.
Derek.

| Well, I think foaming at the mouth right in front of the prime minister
is deplorable. Had this happened in the states, he would have been
wrestled to the ground and incarcerated, and would be facing serious
charges and would probably do time. Hell, if you even try and go near
the white house with a knife, the sniper puts a lead pill in your
head.

| we should arrange to get "jumping Jean" a little dog (petite chein!)
The little beast could have avoided both incidents by putting the run
on these 2 bohunks(sp?).
A little brown mutt that Jean could take to these outings,
he could call him "Canuck", ie "sick 'em Canuck"
"Canuck" could be deputized by the RCMP so he's covered when he bites
someone's arse whilest defending his master (and ours).
The whole of Canada would be sending Canuck gifts at Christmas.
Canada would be at peace again.

| You're owning up to your name Crook. You're stealing that idea from the
Americans. American presidents always have mutts around them. One of
them (might be the current one for all I know) had a Cocker Spaniel for
protection. It created a market for Cocker Spaniels, kinda like when
Princess Di spurred the hat business a few years back simply by
wearing them.
But you gotta like those Americans, it is a good idea. There's got to be a
better name than Canuck though. Some people might think that the mutt is
a hockey player. Any other suggestions for names out there? How about
discussions around the breed of dog that Jean should get? Maybe a
bulldog and he could call it Dief.

Hmmmm.. All who could resist choking a foam mouthed separatist
in your face, please raise your virtual hands...
I personally feel that any so-called head of state who walks
around a crowd of separatists (on FLAG day) who are about to
have their UI benefits slashed is either an idiot and/or is advised
by those who possess room temperature IQ's.
Judging by his attempts at bicycle riding and skateboard jockeying,
I am ashamed to have him globe trotting. I imagine the snickering
of the other heads of state after JC leaves the meeting.
KEEP HIM HOME AND LOCKED UP UNTIL HE CAN BE VOTED OUT. He needs to
be protected from himself.

| I actually like the idea of leaders beating on people, it shows their
humanity. It is only when the leaders bring out their armies with their
sophisticated weaponry that it gets a little unfair. But then again the
100,000 + workers who rallied in Hamilton this past weekend must have
worried ole' Mike the Knife and his gaggle of conservs.
In fact I think all Leaders should do battle with at least one citizen
every six months. It would keep them in shape, and give them something
approaching noble to tell their grand children about.

| If this note was a USA topic instead of good ol' CANADA, most of these
notes weould be whining about freedom of speech and democracy and all
thos over rated concepts (:^)). Funny, huh? The last note talked
about anti-Harris demonstrators. Democracy is fine as long as you play
by the rules: No threatening legislature; no intimidation, no bullhorns
inches from the politician's ears. Of course, it works the other way
too. The politician *must* be as fair as possible and provide the
opportunity for fair speech and democracy to work. There's been lotsa
whining about how many people weren't able to bitch about the Tories
omnibus bill. Well, lots of people *were* able to. The Harris gov't
is being 'fair', and Jean C. is also being 'fair' in that he is not
hiding away from the people or the issues. END RAMBLE.
