804.1 | try AVIS and BUDGET | TROOA::MSCHNEIDER | What is the strategy this hour? | Thu Mar 10 1994 08:27 | 3 |
| I would suggest you try AVIS or BUDGET as we have a corporate discount
with them. Look in VTX Travel for the discount agreement numbers. I
expect you will have to pay a dropoff charge.

804.2 | greyhound bus?? | NEWOA::HARRISON | Don't worry, its only 0's & 1's! | Thu Mar 10 1994 12:06 | 7 |
| As an alternative does anyone have any idea how much a greyhound bus
would be return and single one way. Do they have a contact address and
tel no in the UK?
Thanks again.

| Greyhound busses are very expensive, about $150,000 - $200,000.
har har. ;-)
It's probably easier to rent a car, I don't think the drop of charge
would be so terrible.

804.4 | any more deals?? | NEWOA::HARRISON | Don't worry, its only 0's & 1's! | Fri Mar 11 1994 05:35 | 7 |
| DEC has an agreement with Avis, they have quoted me $219 for the week
plus 14%tax + CDW + %1.50 enviroment tax per day...
Gees all I want to do is hire a car to drive to Edmonton for a few
days, there must be better deals available?!

804.5 | Also try Tilden | TROOA::MCRAM | Marshall Cram DTN 631-7162 | Fri Mar 11 1994 08:48 | 8 |
| We also have an agreement with Tilden for car rentals in Canada, similiar
to Avis. Might just be cheaper. Don't forget to ask for a compact or
sub-compact.
If you only want a few days, go the daily rate, not weekly.

804.6 | Tilden?? | NEWOA::HARRISON | Don't worry, its only 0's & 1's! | Fri Mar 11 1994 09:24 | 4 |

UK agent?
Thanks Al

Actually I think Tilden are the largest Canadian only Car Renter, so
they may have a UK agent but unlikely that they have an office. Their
rates are quite close to Avis. Also in Canada are Hertz, Dollar,
Budget, Thrifty, etc. Some will have UK agents.
Their Toronto number is (416)922-2000 for Out-of-town bookings.

804.10 | rate not that bad | TROOA::MSCHNEIDER | What is the strategy this hour? | Sun Mar 13 1994 19:57 | 6 |
| Remember if you have a Corporate AMEX or Gold VISA your CDW is covered.
Don't let the rental companies hose you on that. $219 Cdn isn't bad
for a weeks rental. I paid $155 US for a week in Massachussetts.
$30-35 is a good daily rental rate these days depending on size of car.
I assume these are unlimited milage rates as well that you were quoted?

Re: .10
Does this apply to all Corporate AMEX cards?
My understanding was that this arrangement did not apply to those
issued here in the UK.
Thinking about it further, it wouldn't apply anyway as we can't use
Corporate cards for personal business. There is a taxable benefit
implication if we did.

Geoff

804.12 | Forget the bus | CGOOA::RATHNOW | Eat right, stay fit, die anyway... | Mon Mar 14 1994 14:47 | 20 |

Al,
I called Greyhound here in Vancouver. A bus ticket from Edmonton to
Vancouver costs $110.75 (cdn) and takes 17 hrs.
IMHO, I would rather pay the extra cost for a car and drive. Taking a bus
does not allow you to do your own thing. Assuming you take the Yellow Head
Highway, you'll be going through some incredible country with some great
spots to camp, hike, fish and do all the other things that B.C. is famous
for.
If you dont take the Yellow Head, you could drive to Jasper, then head
south to Banff and come across B.C. via the Trans Canada.
In any case, you wont get to see much from a Greyhound doing 100km with a
couple of stops here and there.
Cheer,
Dave.

| Thanks for the input Dave. I'm beginning to think that I will
definately drive to Edmonton and return to Vancouver by air so I can
easily connect with my flight onto Honolulu. I will be travelling on my
own to Edmonton and have a few days to make the journey and take it
easy.
Just out of interest does Digital have an office in Vancouver, I'd be quite
interested in paying a visit if they do? [I'm a networks & telecomms
specialist working for the UK's Disaster Recovery Services.]
Thanks again.

There most certainly is, about 10 min. from the airport.
Suite 150, 13571 Commerce Parkway
Richmond, B.C. <- Right next to Vancouver
If you have a few days and would like to get together, give me a call:
DTN: 638-6949
I'm not in the office much but we have voice mail. Otherwise, E-mail me
your schedule and I'll see if we can connect.
Cheers,
Dave
P.S. I know my node says CGO (Calgary) but I am located in VAO (Vancouver).

If not, then you should be able to reserve at a National office.
