417.0. "SUPER BOWL TRIVIA HELP!" by PLOP::COYLE () Thu Nov 15 1990 14:48

Does anyone know who the first guy to intercept a pass and return it
for a touchdown in a SuperBowl game was?

                                        KC

    That's a tough one ...

    I'll give two guesses ...

    	1) Chuck Howley, Dallas Cowboys, Super Bowl V, 1971
    or
    	2) Willie Brown, Oakland Raiders, Super Bowl XI, 1977

Nope.

Think it was Herb Adderly, Green Bay in Super Bowl II.

If not him, then one of the Packer's DBs in either I or II......

If you will note my reply in .2, it just goes to prove that years and
years of SPORTshroom usage does NOT affect your brain cells....

Thanks, John, for confirming....

Looked it up in my NFL Record Manual last night. Unless I cain't read,
it was Adderley in Super Bowl II. And, I had the manual open and was
typing the entry while looking at the manual last night. So, unless
I've completely lost my mind, it's accurate.

The key play of Super Bowl I was the reception by Max McGee I believe.

Max had not been slated to start, partied a bit to too the evening
before and arrived at the stadium with a terrific hangover.

Later, during the game, on a down and in pattern, Starr hit him with
a 35 yard (not quite sure of the yardage) TD pass. If memory serves
me correctly, the pass was just a tad behind him, but he pulled it
in to score....

Yes, Max's catch was an awkward one. He actually wedged the ball
between his right ebbo and kidney as he forced his forward moving
upper body to turn backwards a bit.........

Good call on the 1st SB INT, 'Saw.

Thanks Hawk.

I was a Packer and Giants fan back then. Still like both teams
and root for each unless they play each other.

The Lombardi Glory years were, in my mind, one of the finest legacies
ever left in professional football. Also, the tenets that Lombardi
believed in carried over into life as well. Many of his former players
have been highly successful businessmen, and attribute a lot of that
success to the effect that Lombardi had on them.

It is entirely fitting that the trophy awarded to the Super Bowl
champion is named in tribute to Lombardi.....

Most accounts I've read of Super Bowl I said that the key play of the
game was an interception by Willie Wood early in the third quarter with
KC trailing only 14-10. Wood returned the ball inside the 5 and Green
Bay dominated the rest of the game, winning 35-10.

The following year,Adderly returned a Darryl LaMonica pass for a TD
giving GB a 33-7 lead. They won 33-14.

Adderly,Willie Brown of Oakland in 1977 and Jack Squirek of LA in 1984.
Mike Bass of Washington against Miami, was that considered an
    interception?
    Any others?

Yeah, I'd give you that play in Super Bowl I. I just remember the
McGee catch because he was 2nd stringer who got, and answered the call.

Easy one:
