| Okay, here's an unofficial contest to get this note off to a
rip-roaring start:
Successfully predict when the Nuggets will win their first real game
under resident unconvicted felon-genius Paul Westhead.
I'm guessing it'll be after Thanksgiving, and I'll also bet they're the
first team in a *long* time not to reach double-digit wins in a season.
(This is all assuming Westhaid doesn't get fired long before then,
which is a big assumption, but then again anybody dumb enough to hire
him in the first place is capable of just about anything. :^( )

But apparently none of you appreciate the gravity of the matter. First
you've got a "coach" who lent a fair hand (IMHO) in the tragic and
unnecessary death of a fine young man. Then you've got that
"coach" rewarded for his reckless and self-serving behavior by getting
promoted to the NBA. And lastly you've got that "coach" employing a
"system" that lends much credence to the idea that the NBA is nothing
but a circus sideshow act.
New England fans should take heart though. Their football team,
despite only one win, has the same number as the perennial Super Bowl
losers, and their hoops team, though old and decrepit, can still muster
respectibility and hold their heads high.

As for ol' JugEars, Paul Westhaid (he really *should* have those big

remind our community here that this ambitious man who was once fired by
Magic Johnson actually ran a crippled youth to death and refused to allow
the proper medical equipment be kept on hand cuz he was skeert that it
would hurt sales?
Jughaid should be banned from coaching at *any* level after what he did.

ONe thing - is there anyone in the NBA more suitable to be the 'star'
of this system then Orlando Woolridge? He's perfect for it - and
his numbers so far have been outstanding. I'd go more witha
traditional lineup and not start Davis at forward - go with a bigger
guy and bring Wally off the bench.

since coming back on > 50% shooting.
There's going to come a day {by the end of December} when the Nuggets
will have the right lineup on the floor for most of the game and will
take control... It's an adjustment. How long did it take for Loyola
to make the transition? Also, I've noticed that they are not shooting
as many treys as Loyola used to.
It's a personnel problem... Jackson, Woolridge, and Lichti starting and
Walter Davis coming off the bench seem fine. Know who would probably help
them? A guy like Muggsy Bogues... They need a run-all-night, push-it-up
assist guy in the backcourt to let Jackson just worry about scoring. A
Sean Kemp.. a Danny Ainge.. They need those kind of players.
I hope they give them til next year... even if the Nuggets do lousy this
year, their's a couple players who coould help the system a lot next
year - Stacy Augmon, Kenny Anderson, Larry Johnson.

| I think the defense part of it is going to come with the right personnel
and the right mindset. I would imagine Westhead's theories on defense
are much more complex than "Give 2, get 3". There's got to be some notion
of forcing the other team to shoot :
a) more quickly than they REALLY want to
b) from low percentage areas for each player
c) with emphasis on being in the position to rebound and GO!---->
Has Denver built a 10 point lead yet in any game? That's when I would
expect the system to really put the pressure on the opponent.

re.44
Good point about the defensive side of the game for the Nuggets.
If you really look at the game you only need defense in the key
moments of the game (PROVIDED YOUR SHOOTERS ARE MAKING THE BASKETS),
in essence only play defense when you have too. And with a young team
why not go for it. Its a fun fast pace game(Like going to gym and
playing a game of 5 on 5 full court to 15 by ones).
I like Westhead's Philosophy about the game very simple out score and
out run your opponents and let whatever defense your players have
learned in college/practice take it's natural course. Of course the key
to this kinda game is having strong guards that can push the ball and
control the game tempo. And also a Coach who's when to take the right
time outs and exchange offense players for defense player and give
players plenty of rest after the games. I believe these Pro Players
should be able to play the whole game at a high speed that's what you
have a bench for and thats what they all get payed the big bucks for.

Of course it does! If the team wins more games than it loses over
an extended period, then they are doing right! With such mixed bag
of talent, a .500 record would have been Coach of the Year material
for Westhead.

Ah, nothing like going right to the 'heart' of the matter, eh Doug?
This ugly business has already been discussed at length but, for the
record, let me reaffirm my opinion that Westhead contributed mightily
to Hanks death and not only will go unpunished but was actually
rewarded by getting a promotion to the NBA.
If you disagree, ask yourself this question. If Westhead does the
proactive and righteous thing, which is to not allow Hank to play, and
LMU goes .500 and doesn't make the NCAA tourney - practically a given
I'd say - does Westhead get the Nuggets job? [no]
As to Doug Moe, there's absolutely no question in my mind that Denver
would be around .500 right now if he were there coach. Anybody got
their record from last year handy?

I agree with Doug. No way the Nuggets would be playing .500 ball
with their current cast of characters.
If you watch the Nuggets, their style of play is not all that
different than it was with Doug Moe, but the names are different.
Gone are Schayes, Lever (probably the best all-around guard in the
league), and English (highest scorer in the decade).
Now they have Joe Wolf (who?), Marcus Liberty, Anthony Cook, Chris
Jackson, and Woolridge. The only names from last years team would
be Adams, Rasmussen, WDavis and Lichti.
Bottom line: *NO* experience on the bench. 90% rookies. There ain't a
coach in the league that's gonna get .500 ball out of those guys.
I like what Westhead is doing. He's not that far away from turning
their record around.

And Adams was hurt for much of the start of the season; Walter Davis is
well past his prime; and Lichti didn't get a whole lot of PT last year.
Throw in Woolridge, new to the system, and it's a team that has very little
connection to past Nugget teams.
And, Chris, ask yourself this question:
If Westhead had prevented Gathers from playing last year after
the initial fainting spell - would Gathers be alive today? Or
would we have witnessed him dying on some playground court in
Philly or on some NBA court this year?
Hank was not an innocent youth. He was a 23 year old man, a father;
He took a chance and he lost. Paul Westhead was merely a sidebar
to a tragic story.

consistently been a playoff team. True that all logic tells us his
false philosophy won't cut it in the NBA.

No, he was one of the leading supporting characters to this sordid and
needless affair. For the record Hank did NOT die on some playground,
but rather right in the midst of a helter-skelter LMU game, one which
maximizes the stress on the ticker. Also for the record Westhead had
requested Hank's heart medication be reduced cause he was lookin' a
little sluggish out there.

23 years old ain't a "kid".
Allowing a player to play who wants to play ain't "helping".
Dying of natural causes ain't "killing".

And you ignored the whole issue of the team composition and injuries.

Hey I'll buy into that analogy. If you ever listened to Michael talk
about how much Dean helped him you probably wouldn't offer the
comparison quite so willingly.
That Hank died of 'natural causes' is truly a reach. He was diagnosed
as having a heart problem. He was put on medication to fix the problem,
or at least mask it. CPR equipment was recommended to be kept courtside.
What did Westhead do? Why, didn't make sure the equipment was
available, and requested that his medication be reduced because poor
Hank couldn't keep up with his crazy "system".
By the letter of the law, Westhaid is probably innocent. (Probably,
although I'd still like to see his ace dragged into court for some
*intense* cross-examining. That won't happen though.. :^( ) An
individual of higher standards (to name names, I'd use either Bobby
Knight or Dean Smith) would simply not have allowed this to happen.
Hank might've died, but he would've been on his medication and the
finest medical equipment and personnel would've been courtside to try
and revive him.

one sided as it's been since the Celts dropped from glory a few years

| Denver last year was a mediocre team at best. Then the following
things happened:
They traded away their best player (Lever).
Their second best player left via free agency (English).
They traded away their best big man (Schayes).
The rookie obtained in the Lever trade missed some training camp
and part of the season with a bad reaction to medication.
The rookie obtained in the Schayes trade just signed last week.
Their best remaining player from last year's team (Adams) missed
all of pre-season with a contract dispute.
In short, this is a team with no rebounding, that even now with
Adams and Jackson playing goes only seven deep, and is learning
a system that even a talented team would need time to get used to.
I predict they will have a decent second half of the year, but
still win only 22-25 games. This team needs two more lottery picks
and three seasons to see if Westhead's system works.
