| Over the first two games it seemed like the defenses had finally
gotten Okoye's number. But then again, those were two pretty good
Ds. I think that DeBerg is a real asset to the Chiefs. Too bad
he's not at the helm for the Vikes.

How many years has Steve DeBerg been in the NFL? It seem like
almost a lifetime...
And the teams? Seems like at least 5. This just from memory
and I may be wrong, but I remember (i think..) --San Francisco,
Denver, Green Bay, Tampa Bay, and Kansas City...
Does anyone have the facts?
Thanks,

Yeah T, Marty was so smart that he still called running play after running
play when Denver was lining up 9 men on the line of scrimmage real smart.
I'll give you he's on the ball at evaluating talent and preparing it but
he stinks once they blow the whistle.

| Uh... when did MrT say/imply that Marty was smart? Reread the basenote.
I believe DeBerg has played for 4 teams in his 14 year career.
In each instance, he was bumped by that team's "quarterback of the future".
He came up with San Francisco and was the starter for a while. The
49ers came up with some kid named Montana and DeBerg rode the pine
before heading off to Denver.
When some wayward baseball player thumbed his nose at the Colts
and arrived at Mile High, DeBerg took his regular seat on the sidelines.
He later had a cup of coffee in Tampa before the "Hello Vinny" show
rolled into town.
DeBerg wound up in KC where there ain't no QBotF. I'd take
Montana or Elway but DeBerg's really no slouch. Nice ball-handling
skills and pretty accurate on play action passes. Since he has played
comparatively few downs, he hasn't taken the beatings some other
veteran QBs have and he's relatively healthy. Occasionally, he can
reach back and come up with the heater. Vinny, IMO, is a stiff.
DeBerg is the second oldest QB in the NFL, just behind Grogan.

| My mistake I thought was I thought he was refering to Marty being at the
helm of the vikes, if he means Deberg then the same still goes why the
hell didn't Deberg audibalize in that game with 9 men on the line...

| Mike, based on what I saw, you caint blam DeBerg.
KC backs in general, and Okoye in particular, are absolutely awful at
picking up a blitz. One play in particular stands out.
DeBerg gets the snap, and a Denver LB just blows through the C-G gap
and hammers DeBerg before he can take two steps.
Okoye ?
He was supposed to pick up the blocker, he didn't. He didn't step up
into the gap at all, and DeBerg got plastered. (That hit made MY ribs
hurt.)
Hell, I'd hand off too ....

Sure I can Doc, it's easy. Denver had 9 men on the line of scrimmage
defensively and none of them were head to head on the WR. Why Deberg
couldn't take a three step drop and hit one of the guys on a slant
is beyond me. The WR would have only had to beat one guy maybe two
to go all the way. I only saw the first half so maybe KC adjusted
but I mean Denver kept throwing that defensive scheme at them it
should have taken them all of one series to realize what the hell
to do about it...

| After last Monday night's performance, DeBerg had more completions
than Len Dawson and more attempts than both Craig Morton and Kenny
Stabler (2160/3808 or 57%). His TD/INT ratio (143/171) is less than
admirable, however.
So far this year, he's 51 of 94 (54%) for 718 yards with 4 TDs and 0 INTs.

I believe he has more TD receptions than any other KC receiver at
this point and is probably among the team leaders in receptions (I can
verify this tomorrow if it's that important to you). FWIW, he did have a
TD negated during Week 5 due to a holding penalty called on the KC
offensive line. He's probably KC's best (only?) deep threat and, from
what I've seen and heard, has pretty good hands. He has caught at least
one pass in every KC game except Week 6.

activity in this note.
Anyway, I grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. KC was the closest pro-football
team to Omaha so I grew up during the Len Dawson era and have always
been a Chiefs fan.
I watched the Chiefs/Donko's game on TV last Sunday and I must say that
the town of KC is responding big-time to the division leading Chiefs.
It was fun to watch the crowd get into it. It reminded me of past glory
days of 20 years ago.

| Let's not forget that even if by some miracle the Faiders win their
last 3 games, they still need help to win the division. The Chiefs do
have to play Houston this week, but the Oilers have proven to be less
than spectacular when they get outside the dome. The Faiders probably
won't get by Cincy this week, but they will definitely be put in their
place by Minnesota next week.
Bottom line: KC will be the 1990 AFC West Champions.

Of their remainding three games, the Oilers might end up being the
easiest of the three, with the Chiefs having to go on the road
against the Chargers (never easy games between interdivisional
rivalries, especially on the road), and the Bears at Soldier field.
On the other hand, the Raiders play two of their last three at home,
starting next week against a Boomer-less Bengal team, then on the
road against the Vikes (we'll see how tough they really are), and
back home against the Chargers (again, never easy between
interdivisional rivalries).
Yup, KC will be playing the Raiders again this year in LA, but this
time the Raiders won't lose!
