| I don't follow NCAA ball enough to name names but,
Celtics need a shooting guard that can handle the ball. How about a
clone that can run/dribble like KJ, pass like Magic, and shoot like
Jordan?!
Suns need a physical power forward who can board, a Charles Barkley
clone is in order here.

| Travis Mays of UT, once considered a late first roun/early 2nd rounder,
is now being touted as a lottery pick. The Longhorn guard has
showcased himself well in the NCAA tourney and in various All-Star
games. He score a career high 44 points against Georgia in the NCAA's,
was named the MVP of the coach's All Star Game in Denver, and recently
scored 21 points (something like 3-4 from NBA 3pointland) with 8
assists as a point guard (he is usually the shooting guard) in another
all star game over the weekend.

| RE: .4 Seniors Stock Who Went Up
Marty Blake, the NBA's scouting Director, figures these seniors are
moving up the draft ladder after their performance last week at
Orlando.
o Marvis Mays,6-2, Guard, Texas:"Great Athlete. Showed he belongs in the
first round. He can be a great offensive player."
o Felton Spencer, 7-0, Center,Louisville:"In this era where you can't find
centers, he's a legitimate one. Aggressive. Plays with desire, a big
upside. May surprise where he's picked."
o A.J. English,6-3, Guard, Virginia Union:The Division II Player of the Year.
All he had to do was prove that he could play against Division I
competition. He answered that."
o Alaa Abdelnaby, 6-10,Forward, Duke:"Came on this year. He realized the
opportunity and made the necessary adjustments in his game."
o Bo Kimble,6-3 1/2, Guard, Loyola Marymount:"With all he's been through,
he didn't have to come here. Says a lot about him that he did."
o Willie Burton, 6-6 1/2, Forward/Guard, Minnesota:"A prospect. Showed
everybody that he could play big guard. May have moved into LaSalle's
Lionel Simmons' spot in the draft.
o Duane Caswell. 6-11 1/2, Center,Temple:"Has the tools. All he needs is
experience."
o Cedric Ceballos,6-6 1/2, Forward, Cal-State Fullerton:"An unknown
quantity. Played at a small school on the West Coast and not that many
people knew about him. Now that people have seen him, they realize that
he can play in our league."
o Les Jepsen,7-0, Center, Iowa:"Don't look at what he can't do; look at
what he can do: He's 7 foot, he plays hard, he runs the floor well."
o Dwayne Schintzius, 7 1/2,Center,Florida:"Made a lot of friends just by
coming here. Sure he's out of shape, but the skills, are there. He said
someting by coming here. Now, he has to go out and lose weight.( Schintzius
weighs 293 pounds, 30 more than his playing weight.) Remember he's a
center."

These are the players I think will go in the lottery, in approximately
this order.
1. DERRICK COLEMAN
2. Lionel Simmons
3. Gary Payton
4. Dwayne Schintzius (I'd guess Orlando will pick him -
they need a center, and he's a local)
5. Chris Jackson
6. Gerald Glass
7. Alec Kessler
8. Bo Kimble
9. Rumeal Robinson
10. Terry Mills
11. Kendall Gill/Willie Burton.
Other possibilities -
Scott Williams, Elden Campbell, Jayson Williams (was a lock before injury woes),
Tyrone Hill, Felton Spencer.
Underclassmen who could crack the top 11 (Jackson has already entered draft) -
Larry Johnson (would go in top 3)
Dennis Scott (probably 4-6)
Alonzo Mourning (4-6, but I don't think he is ready yet).
Kenny Anderson (7 or worse, I think he should and will stay another year).
What do you think?

| RE:.13 Willie Burton
Marty Blake, NBA Scouting, predict that Willie Burton will probably
take the L Train slot in the Draft order based on the Orlando Classic.
RE:-1 Need vs Talent
It also tends to be a factor as to teams needs and what talent is
available. Also , things as teams trading for picks etc is a factor.
One thing i have noticed is that great Big men tends to go before
great guards--I do not mean to get into a "rat-hole" on this, but
one must also factor the ranking of players by position, otherwise
its a crap-shoot.
What about AJ English ? I expect him to go before Kendell Gill.

208.17 | Mock Draft-Need vs Talent | XCUSME::SAPP | | Sat Apr 21 1990 12:47 | 32 |
| Well it's a rainy day in New England, and at the point of being ridiculous
this early, but wanting to propose a "Straw Man", here are some of my
my toughts on the Draft based on how team are as of today. I understand
that the lottery is such thatof the 11 teams the team with the worst
record has 11 chances to be picked first;the team with the second worst
record, 10 chances, etc. After three teams are picked the others are in
reverse order of final team records.
So here my Mock Draft:
Pos Team % Need Likely Pick Comment
--- ---- - ---- ----------- -------
1 Orlando .210 C/F Coleman 1st pick regardless
2 NJ .213 C/F Schintzius The type of pick the Nets like
3 Miami .213 F Burton Minnesota cringes
4 Charlotte .235 C/G Kimble Abdelnaby local favorite
Campbell from Clemson,or
Scott Williams from NC
5 Minnesota .278 F Simmons Burton if available
6 Sac .288 Robinson Need everything,may draft
Chris Jackson
7 LAC .380 C/F Butler They need someone who helps
"Team" chemistry
8 Washington .388 C/F Spencer Abdelnaby, if available
9 Golden State .456 C/F Mills Mills is either C/F
10 Atlanta .488 F Vaught Scott--Ga Tech is natural if he
comes out, Jackson if there
11 Seattle .494 C Jepson Just what they need
If Larry Johnson comes out, Miami will pick him making Minnesota very
happy.

With the lottery picture clear, here is one view of what the top half of
the draft will look like:
1. New Jersey needs help everywhere - can you get front office guys in
the draft? No reason not to go with the consensus #1 pick, but then
these are the Nets we are talking about. Let's say they regain their
sanity and pick DERRICK COLEMAN.
2. Seattle needs help at center and point guard. All options at center
are suspect, so they go for blue chip prospect GARY PAYTON. Also possible
are Schintzius and Spencer.
3. Miami needs scoring and rebounding, so how about the guy who does tons
of both -- LIONELL SIMMONS. If neither Simmons nor Coleman is available,
I think they should go for Chris Jackson.
4. Who is going to bite for DWAYNE SCHINTZIUS? I guess Orlando will. They
really need a center, plus the local appeal. Look for a turbulent season.
5. Charlotte needs a small forward (also a true center, but then who doesn't?).
They pick ACC Ace DENNIS SCOTT.
6. Minnesota adds some scoring punch with CHRIS JACKSON.
7. Sacramento is hurting for a point guard, but Payton and Jackson are gone.
They settle for RUMEAL ROBINSON, who turns out to be George McCloud II.
8. The Clippers have two major needs - a backup center and an outside shooter.
They fill the first with FELTON SPENCER.
9. Dallas has three first round picks, and uses the first (from Washington) to
land a good forward - GERALD GLASS, though Willie Burton is also possible.
10. The Warriors need the best big man available, and they pick ALEC KESSLER.
Terry Mills is another possibility.
11. Atlanta is likely to go for the best available player regardless of posi-
tion. That might be WILLIE BURTON.
12. Houston can't believe that KENDALL GILL is still around, and takes him
before they can goof up.
13. The Clippers now fill their shooting guard needs with local favorite
BO KIMBLE.
Other first rounders:
Terry Mills, Alaa Abdelnaby, Elden Campbell, Scott Williams, Jayson Williams,
Trevor Wilson, Tyrone Hill, Derek Strong, Boo Harvey, Travis Mays, Steve Henson,
Brian Oliver, Marcus Liberty.

I doubt very much that the Magic will take Schintzius. I remember

| Well this seems like fun so I will make a stab at predictions and
if I get ONE right I will be suprised!!!!! Some will seem outlandish
but hey everyone has to get a little crazy.
1) Nets - Derrick Coleman. If they dont they all need to be commited.
2) Supersonics - Their picks suprised the heck out of me last year.
This one doesnt. No matter what some scouts say....
Chris Jackson is TOO GOOD to pass up.
3) Heat - The L-TRAIN Lionel Simmons. Nuff said.
4) Orlando - I originally thought maybe Dennis Scott would go here
but Sam Vincent and Scott Skiles are good BACK UP point
guards so the Magic draft a starter in Gary Payton.
5) Hornets - "Double team on Tripuka...he kicks it out to Chapman
for the wide open three and BRICK!!!!" This ends
when they take Dennis Scott, with Rex and Scott....now
double team us inside PLEASE says the Hornets.
8) Northstars - The TIMBERWOLVES(can you hear me Mr Stern??) held
their breath for the first 5 picks and the one they
wanted all along is still there...Willie Burton.
7) Sacramento - Rumeal Robinson. I cant understand the King's
philosophy..."lets trade away our only point guard"
They are lucky to get Robinson and Carr turned out
to be a pleasant suprise.
8) Clippers - Huge choice between Bo Kimble and Kendal Gill. Bo
showed alot of spirit and heart in the tourney I
know this sounds corny but if things go as I think
this will be the deciding factor the Clipps need
this kind of players. Did I mention that he could
play off guard and both forwards positions???
9) Mavs - Gill. Only because they are suprised to see him. They
are not heart broken since Blackman and Harper and getting
a little old.
10) Warriors - Felton Spencer. The Warriors hope he is the rebounding
answer.
11) Atlanta - A J English Division 2 in school only.
Thats it for lottery. 12 through 27 in next note for those who
are interested or those who would like a laugh.

|
Here we go again by now the rest of the non lottery teams are
salivating with all the big and talented men left. Well there
isnt a Micheal Jordan in the bunch this is a DEEP draft.
12) Houston - Draft a point guard or trade me says AKEEM. He gets
his wish and (sorry Nazz and Boston fans) Travis Mays
of Texas is taken by the Rockets.
13) Clippers - Terry Mills. Can he gain some minutes??? If coached
right this could be the SPURS of next year.
14) Dallas - Bimbo Coles. Some suprised to see him left here.
15) Denver - Dwayne Stskfjafjnsdjvis.
16) Milwak - Cedric Ceballos. Dont even try to remember his name.
The media wont. This might be a VERY far fetched
prediction but I saw this guy play UNLV and he more
than held his own against there front line.
17) New York - Alec Kessler.
18) Dallas - Loy Vaught.
19) Boston - Any Byu Grad available MUST BE SLOW. We all know the
Celtics need a guard, the Celtics know they need a
guard....they take........Gerald Glass.
20) Northstars - Elden Cambell
21) Phoenix - The loss of a rebounding mad forward (Tyrone Corbin
in the expansion draft) hurt the Suns. Cry no more
Anthony Bonner. (let ncaa in rebounds)
22) Chicago - Derek Strong of Xavier.
23) Utah - Dee Brown gives the Jazz a formidable backup at the point.
24) Spurs - Antonio Davis of UTEP.
25) Portland - Scott Williams of UNC.
26) Detroit - Stephen Thompson. OK OK OK OK!!!! Stop yelling.
I know just as well as anyone of you than he cant
couldnt and probably wont hit a high % of his open
jumpers, with the PISTONS he doesnt need to. He will
play the small forward position and will make and
impact on this team along with teammate and fellow
rookie Anthony (gained 20 pounds of Muscle in Italy)
Cook.
27) Lakers - This is a problem child. He wouldnt make it on any
other team. He is too talented to pass up. Magic
Johnson will make him a player and a steal!!!!
Sean Higgins.

At Syracuse, Coleman and Seikaly seemed to

Read in this Sunday's Globe that the Miami Heat have
decided to draft Dwayne Schintzius (if available, I
guess).
Just when I thought the Heat were going about building
their team in a sensible way ... don't they already
have a GOOD center in Rony 'Most Improved' Seikaly?
Aren't they hungry for a power forward and a shooting
guard? Will be real tough rooting for a team with
Mr Ugly on it.

| There are strong rumors of the Celtics trading McHale to Seattle for

a star somewhere else as a small forward.....
Anyone else catch the pay per view one on one? I only saw the last two
games but got to admit Kimble looked good. Payton whinned to much but
I was impressed with his quickness. Packer was driving me nuts though
he kept screaming for the guy with the ball and the lead to take the
ball out bounds instead of the fouls shots. Sure good stratgy except
if I'm playing to impress the pros then I want to make those foul shots

| Steve,
The rumour here is McHale, the rights to Shaw, the Celts pick, for
Barros and the #2. However, there have been about a zillion rumours
here about teams coveting the #2. Included are the #2, McDaniel
and Cage to Houston for Akeem and Wiggins; the #2 to the Lakers
for Scott and Thompson; and a host more. The concensus is to pooh-pooh
the Mchale deal because the Sonics think McHale is Too old, plus
they don't like Red because of comments (i.e. rubbing their face
in it for a past trade...or somethign like that).
The feeling is that the Sonics will pick Payton, but that they may
package Cage and McDaniel for another pick or a big guy. They
think Payton will make Ellis even better.

| Mike,
KC will have little input. Whitset and Bernie wil have the real
say. This all sounds like the typical yearly "Red will pull a move".
Two year's ago itwas almost positive that Red would get David Robinson
with one of his shrewd moves. Face it, look at BYU's roster - look
for the biggest white guy available - he'll be the one with "Ship
me to the Gahden" tatooed on his forehaid.
The only plus McHale would give would be to teach Kemp some inside
moves.
The other rumours involve teams with picks 6 through 9, since the
Sonics feel good players will still be available, and they can get
a player plus a pick for the #2. Most ofthe rumours have McDaniel
and/or Cage getting shipped. Sonics want to move McKey to small
forward and use Kemp in te power slot. Center and point guard are
the needs, but they rate point guard as #1 priority, looking at
sucees of teams like Phoenix that have a mediocre center but a great
point guard.
re Utah Deal. Gives the Jazz an added dimension - instant firepower
from the outside. Gives them 4 potential 20+ scores, the games
premier defensive prescence in the middle, the bench is the weakness...
though I think Blue Edwards could grow into a 6th man role.

This would be the trade to put them over the top. Hurry while

with a one screw in his foot, another one loose in his head, and
a couple of rusty bolts hanging off his neck. Scott's a gamer and
Thompson is a million laughs. You'll love 'em! :)

for Barros and the #2 in the draft sounds great to me ! Celts then
take Scott/Payton ..... together with Barros, their backcourt is set
for years. Lewis/Smith share time at the small forward spot and
Pinckney/Bird at the other.
However, I think that Boston (and Red in particular) overvalue their
players ...... McHale making the second All-defensive team is a
joke ..... he plays defense roughly in the same area code as his
opponent.

| I can't see how either of the trades JD mentioned do Seattle much good. Getting
McHale for Barros and the #2? That leaves the Sonics even farther behind in
their quest for a point guard and a center. We don't need no steenkin power
forwards, certainly not at that price, or at that age. As for the deal with the
Lakers, I can't see why either team would like it. From the Sonics perspective,
Scott is redundant, unless you're thinking of moving Ellis to small forward or
having Scott play the point. Thompson would be nice, but how's he really any
different than Steve Johnson? From the Lakers perspective, can they really
afford to lose a center? I mean, Divac is doing great, but are they going to
depend on him and MacNamara?

Subject: Kings rebuild with four first-round picks
Date: 28 Jun 90 03:18:29 GMT
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (UPI) - The Sacramento Kings fashioned their
unprecedented four first-round picks Wednesday into what they hope will
be the nucleus of a team that will challenge well into the 1990s.
The Kings selected College Player of the Year Lionel Simmons of
LaSalle with the seventh pick in the draft; run-and-gun guard Travis
Mays of Texas was taken with the 14th overall pick; promising 7-0 center
uane Causwell of Temple got the nod as the 18th pick; and tough
rebounding small forward Anthony Bonner of St. Louis was taken in the
23rd position.
In the second round, the Kings selected Vernell ``Bimbo'' Coles. A
6-1 guard, Coles averaged 25.3 points over the last three seasons at
Virginia Tech. He also was a member of the 1988 Olympic basketball team.
``We filled all our needs, but now we are looking for a veteran
point guard,'' said Jerry Reynolds, the Kings director of player
personnel. Reynolds traded Purvis Ellison - last year's top pick - and
veteran small forward Rodney McCray to pick up the extra choices.
The selection of Bonner, who led the NCAA Division I with 13.6
rebounds per game last year, completed the Kings' history-making day as
the first NBA team to have four first-round picks.
``He's a good one to make history on,'' said Reynolds of Bonner.
``He's a Jerome Kersey-type player and a Warrior.''
The selection of Simmons was a slight surprise. The Kings had
coveted Oregon State point guard Gary Payton. But Payton was chosen
second by the Seattle SuperSonics.
``I got a call about noonish that the Kings were interested in
me,'' said Simmons. ``I talked with Coach (Dick) Motta and he stressed I
would be able to come in right away and play. That's important because
young players have to get minutes to learn how to play.''
Simmons finished his career at LaSalle as the third-leading scorer
in NCAA history with 3,127 points. He averaged 24.6 points and 10.9
rebounds during his college career.
``We thought he (Simmons) was the best small forward available in
the draft,'' said Reynolds. ``If we didn't take him now we weren't going
to get him.''
Following the selection of Mays, Reynolds was beaming from the
Kings' draft headquarters in Arco Arena.
``Kings fans, as they say in French Lick, Ind. (Reynolds'
hometown), we done caught us a break,'' said Reynolds. ``We were very
surprised he was available. We would have been comfortable with him as
the No. 7 pick.''
Mays averaged 18.4 points, shot .371 percent from three-point range
and totaled 2,279 points in his career at Texas.
``It will be a little bit of an adjustment,'' said Mays, who's
expected to be a point guard in Motta's halfcourt offense. ``But the
coach explained they were trying to rebuild at that's fine with me. I
was in the same situation at Texas.''
Following the selection of Causwell, Reynolds again appeared
surprised the team's pick was available.
``He's going to be an outstanding center in this league,'' said
Reynolds. ``It may take a year or two, but we've got time.''
Sacramento's selection of Simmons gave the Kings a logical
replacement for McCray. The Kings dispatched McCray with two draft
choices to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for reserve center Bill
Wennington and the Mavericks' two first-round picks.

208.99 | Purdue's Scheffler picked, what a surprise! | JUPITR::MOK | Charles P. Mok | Wed Jun 27 1990 23:51 | 8 |
| Stephen Scheffler was picked #39 last night by Charlotte in the second
round of the NBA draft. This is a complete surprise. I wonder why the
Hornets will want him, he hardly looks like a NBA prospect to me and if
anything I would have taken many of the players drafted after him like
Bimbo Coles or Sean Higgins. I don't think he was projected to be
picked at all. Still best of luck for Scheffler.

The team to look out for in the future is the L.A. Clippers. They
added Bo Kimble and Loy Vaught to a team with Danny Manning. The
only problem I can forsee is that they have a lot of stars. Will
they gel as a team. I think they have a new coach also.

Allan Bristow, Hornets VP: "Certainly with the 39th pick you're not
going to have a player everybody's raving about. We have a void at
center. He'll come in and have a chance to make this team. We made a
commitment that if we went small on the first pick [Kendall Gill], we
would go big on the second. We felt to take a guard there, with
leftover guards, well, we felt we had to go big."

| Sacramento had what looks to be a great draft. Charlotte will never
cease to amaze me. Kendall Gill, in my oppinion, was the best shooting
guard in the draft, but with Chapman & Curry, the logical pick seems
to have been Lionel Simmons or Rumael Robinson.
It appears that teams will have an active offseason in the trade
market.

BTW: The best chance of the draft was taken by the Spurs when they
picked Schintzius with the 24th pick.

| Sacramento traded the rights to Coles to Miami for Rory Sparrow.
Interesting.
I thought the most befitting selection last night was Lance Blanks from
Texas going to Detroit. A bad boy for the Bad Boys. For once, I can't
wait to see Sir Charles clobber someone as much as I want to see Blanks
layed out cold.
The Hornets will definitely have to trade a guard. My guess would be
Del Curry who would be a great pickup for just about any team with a
good coaching staff. Maybe next year the Hornets can get Mourning or
Mutombo. They'll certainly have one of the better picks again.

| YAHOOO!!!!
My main man, Tate George goes in the first round, to NJ Nets, 22nd pick.
I'm happy about that because he'll get some playing time, add some
team leadership, and be in his home state.
So, Dan, what can you tell me about the Nets. If they're gonna
be my secondary team this year, I've got to get familiar with them...

Spurs took the biggest gambles in Dwayne and Higgins but if they
pan out they stole the draft yesterday despite the Kings 4 picks.
The outside shooting of Higgins got to help and Schintzius is excellent
trade bait and better backup than the Brickmasterkoski....

208.107 | Scheffler-Ross connection | 34443::HAAS | same as talking to you | Thu Jun 28 1990 08:59 | 12 |
| Why Scheffler? Easy. Doug Ross moves to the Carolinas and the Hornets try
to make him feel at home.
The Hornets actually made a coule of "interesting" picks. They chose
Kendall Gill as their number 1, even though the shooting guard is their
deepest position. Chapman has taken a lot of abuse for his slow
development but the opinion among fellow NBA players is much higher.
Remember, if he had stayed at Kentucky, he would have been in this draft.
It looks like the odd mand out will be Dell Curry, who's already being
shopped around.

| Does anyone know why the Pistons drafted Blanks over Oliver? I felt
that Oliver was the logical choice here. I also feel that this guy
Scheffler is going to be a very good NBA player. I think his size
and soft touch will help somebody. He would make a real good piston!

| Subject: NBA Draft Analysis
(KEITH DRUM, UPI College Basketball Writer)
Date: 28 Jun 90 16:36:16 GMT
The pencil is sharpened, and it's grading time for the team scores
off the NBA draft:
Atlanta Hawks -- A team seeking chemistry can learn from the work
ethic and leadership of guard Rumeal Robinson. Second-rounder Trevor
Wilson is a decathlete for a run-and-jump team. Grade B.
Boston Celtics -- Dee Brown is appropriate for a running team, but
can the aging front court keep up with the draft's quickest player? C
plus.
Charlotte Hornets -- The Hornets added to their strength with
two-guard Kendall Gill and are hoping he can play point. Even for an
expansion team, it's a risky move. Only a C.
Chicago Bulls -- The deal for Dennis Hopson is better than any
shooter the 22nd pick could have brought. Second-round Yugoslav Tony
Kukoc is a first-round talent who may be impossible to sign. Bulls get a
B.
Cleveland Cavaliers -- The only pick, 6-11 Stefano Rusconi late in
second round, isn't the Italian import that matters most for next year.
Grade D.
Dallas Mavericks -- The Mavs decided to get ``Fat'' for a serious
run at NBA title by adding veterans Lafayette Lever and Rodney McCray
and dropping out of draft except for late second-rounder Phil Henderson.
The payoff could be big, though the price might bring lean years down
the road for an aging team. Give Big D an A minus.
Denver Nuggets -- Tickets sales are as important as points for this
rebuilding team. Thus, exciting Chris Jackson and prospect Marcus
Liberty make sense. B plus.
Detroit Pistons -- Lance Blanks is the kind of aggressive
defender-athlete the champions like, but first he's got to make the
team. Only a C.
Golden State Warriors -- The Warriors deserve high marks just for
not gambling on Dwayne Schintzius, and picks Tyrone Hill, Les Jepsen and
Kevin Pritchard should help. C plus.
Houston Rockets -- The team needing a point guard stills needs one,
though shooter Dave Jamerson and forward prospect Carl Herrera help. C
plus.
Indiana Pacers -- Back-to-back second-round picks Antonio Davis and
Kenny Williams are defensive and offensive projects. C minus.
Los Angeles Clippers -- Bo Kimble and Loy Vaught are two sound
players and people and, most important, both want to play for the
Clippers. Grade A.
Los Angeles Lakers -- The gamble on Elden Campbell should not be
compared to last year's gamble on Vlade Divac. Campbell is a greater
risk with less payoff. Just a C.
Miami Heat -- Excuse it, but the Heat is on. Scorer Willie Burton,
big forward Alec Kessler and small guard Bimbo Coles are significant and
appropriate additions for a expansion team with a plan and following it.
Solid A.
Milwaukee Bucks -- Terry Mills drew mixed reviews, and the Bucks are
hoping they read the right ones in trying to find another Terry
Cummings. B minus.
Minnesota Timberwolves -- Felton Spencer's size and work ethic and
the scoring potential of Gerald Glass made them good picks. B plus.
New Jersey Nets -- Derrick Coleman was an obvious choice, while Tate
George and Jud Buechler are the well-schooled types Coach Bill Fitch
prefers. B.
New York Knicks -- A little surprising that the Knicks, needing help
soon, chose to draft for the future with Jerrod Mustaf. C plus.
Orlando Magic -- Who else but Dennis Scott for the team that just
tries to score as many as it give up? B as in bombs away.
Philadelphia 76ers -- Tough-guy Brian Oliver and aptly named Derek
Strong fit with the new Bullies of Broad Street. Worth a C.
Phoenix Suns -- A healthy Jayson Williams could be a steal, Negele
Knight is a good backup for Kevin Johnson and Cedric Ceballos isn't yet
21. B plus.
Portland Trail Blazers -- The Blazers get a good prospect with a
late pick for the second straight year. As with Cliff Robinson last
season, Alaa Abdelnaby can help off the bench. Solid B.
Sacramento Kings -- Two of the four first-round picks -- forward
Lionel Simmons and guard Travis Mays -- will be regulars and the others --
Duane Causwell and Anthony Bonner -- have promise. A minus.
San Antonio Spurs -- Coach Larry Brown generally doesn't like the
unexpected but he better get used to it with Dwayne Schintzius and Sean
Higgins coming aboard. Middle pick Tony Massenburg is a veritable rock
by comparison. C at best.
Seattle Supersonics -- The Sonics have gambled some in recent drafts
but point guard Gary Payton was the most necessary pick for now. Grade
A.
Utah Jazz -- The trade for Jeff Malone, giving up only two support
players and No. 23 pick, was the move of a legitimate contender. Skinny
7-footer Walter Palmer has promise if he isn't caught in a Mark
Eaton-Karl Malone sandwich. Jazz played an A tune.
Washington Bullets -- This organization finally recognized it
required some serious rebuilding, so the trade for Pervis Ellison is an
understandable, though risky, foundation. Second-rounders Greg Foster
and A.J. English address needs. Only a C for the moment.
