| WALT,
Don't start your party yet. The reason contracts weren't offered to
Willie and Doyle is because they could have only cut their salaries
by 20%. By not offering contracts they can resign them at any price.
The Tiger's have said they would consider resigning them if no one else
signs them. The Sporting News listed Willies stats as 15 saves with a
5.72 ERA that was inflated by 3 appearances when he yielded 11 runs in
11 1/3 innings.
Also the Sporting News indicated that Bo Schembechler could replace Jim
Campbell as the Tigers' President. He is on the Board of Directors and
is a good friend of Tom Monaghan.

it was a rotator cuff type, although not as extensive as what John

Tigers are still interested in him at this point.
Jack Morris is the key for this year. I think he's eligible for

Saturday was a different story. Randy Johnson threw the first no-hitter

the loss. Johnson walked 6 and struck out 8.
Also read that Detroit signed catcher Jody Davis. He is working out at

when Ted Williams won the triple crown (including a .406 batting
average), Joe Dimaggio won the MVP -- his 56 game hitting streak
probably had something to do with it, too.
(What team won the pennant that year?)
Aw, give Rickey his due; he makes the A's go and has the stats to go

1) Who's going to remember Rickey's stats in 2 years?
2) With Canseco, the pitching staff and the team, would losing
Rickey have cost them that much? I think they still finish
where they finish.
3) Awful to mediocre can be a lot when it's a difference of 20 games.
The difference certainly wasn't the pitching staff.

51.40 | BO Don't Know Baseball | CSC32::GULDEN | | Fri Dec 28 1990 07:31 | 40 |
| Just listen to him. He isn't a homer. He reports the game and adds
very little color. He has a voice that you won't forget once you have
heard it. He has been with the Tigers since 1960. So many of the fans
have only heard Ernie on the radio. He has broadcast several World
Series on national radio.
ESPN did a segment on him on Major League Baseball Magazine. I was
fantastic for me being a die-hard Tiger fan. I nearly brings me to
tears. Growing up in PA. I remember being able to tune in games. The
signal was weak and would fade and I could only pickup after 9pm but
it was well worth it. He is the only announcer traded for a player.
He did the play by play on the first coast to coast live TV broadcast.
This was the game when Bobby Thompson homered for the Giants. You
probably remember the radio broadcast "THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT...."
He shows so much class especially in the way this has been handled.
The local fans are irate. I thought for sure he would be able to write
his own ticket instead of being forced out. Bo should be the one to
retire. A Quote in the Sporting News (MARK WHICKER) "What did he ever
do to antagonize the coach? Invent the Rose Bowl? They didn't even
want him around for this season. Bo didn't even want to announce it
himself. He wanted Ernie to do it for him.
A friend just came back from Detroit and said that bomb threats
are being called into almost all Dominos Pizzas in the area. He even
said that the Owners' daughters house burnt down (not sure on exact
cause). The plan is for a boycott of openning day. Ernie ask that the
fans not do anything to hurt the Tigers.
I myself am tempted to write a letter. I doubt it will do any good
but as you can probably tell this is an emotional issue with me. IMHO
he was the best announcer radio had to offer. Skully and Buck don't
even come close.

Just the latest in a long line of Bo Schembechler bungles. Quite
obviously, the guy doesn't know what he's up against in the world of
baseball. It's a little different than with football where you can
fire, berate, or otherwise abuse just about anyone and the beat will go
on. I'm delighted over the way the people of Detroit have responded on
this issue. Ernie Harwell is what Harry Caray is to Chicago, with five
times the talent and ten times the class. Maybe Bo'll have to step
down or something ('cuz you know Monaghan ain't gonna take the heat).

| The broadcaster who is most known (and whose broadcast is replayed) of
the Bobby Thomson home run was Harwell's partner with the Giants, Russ
Hodges. Harwell and Hodges sounded not at all alike.
Firing Ernie Harwell is a bigger crime and makes as much sense as the
Red Sox firing Ned Martin from radio after the 1978 season. Jim Woods,
Martin's partner, showed as much integrity as Harwell's partner, Paul
Carey, is showing now. Both quit in support.
I used to like Bo Schembechler but I can't stand him anymore.

| re .42 I couldn't remember who called the Giant's game when Thompson
hit the homer. Strange thing was that Ernie and Russ alternated radio
and TV and it was Ernie's turn for TV. Just turn out to be the first
coast to coast live broadcast and it is basically unknown because of
Hodges famous call of the homer.
Also got some Detroit papers and all Bo and WJR will say is the want to
go in a new direction. It is rumoured that Frank Beckman, who does play
by play for Michigan and is a good friend of Bo will be the
replacement.
And one correction. The t-shirt/bumper stickers say
BO Don't Know ERNIE. (And I have a T-Shirt. It will look good with
