    The Browns face a tough challange this week against the Vikings.
    They are playing in Cleveland, so they have a chance... Houston
    plays Cincinnati and could very easily lose.  What this means is
    that Cleveland can beat Houston on the last game of the season 
    and win the division... remember, Houston is 0-1 v.s. the Browns
    this year.  
    
    Cincinnati can still win the division if Cleveland beats Houston,
    Minnesota beats Cleveland and Cincinnati wins both of their remaining
    games.
    
    These scenarios are all highly possible... the Oilers can't beat
    teams with winning records.

    One thing can be said for this coming weekends game in Houston..

    Now that was football.  I like games at Cleveland, except when the
    fans chuck stuff - they didn't do that on Saturday.  Cleveland stadium
    alwasy reminds me of Oakland.  I loved watching that game.  Great

    No running game leads to a poor passing game.  With Mack back,
    a lot of pressure has been taken off of Kosar.  Mack has only
    been practicing for a couple of weeks but he looked good 
    yesterday.  He should really help the passing game, and the 
    running game of Metcalf.

    Spud, only a couple things wrong with this scenario. First, due to
their record, Vikes can only play at Giants or at Niners in the first
round, and will not host any playoff game this year... Giants can
only meet SF in Conference Championship game. Giants will beat Vikings
if they play them :^)

    off the niners and the Vikes beat the Gints.  
    
    But, the point is moot.  The Browns will win the Super Bowl.  After
    all, this is the Browns note, so lets get this discussion to the REAL

    	I think that the browns will win this Saturday!!!  They are
    	playing inside, temp controlled.  Good for Bernie.  The Dawgs
    	will go crazy and I think they will be doing alot of blitzing.
    	If you notice...the last two games...they have been playing
    	alot of man-to-man coverage...I never understood why they
    	didn't do that sence the start.

    They put a hurtin on the Oilers in the House of Shame...
    
    The Browns totally handled Houston in the first half, and though
    the Oilers staged a comeback in the second half, it fell short.
    
    In fact, the Oilers short-lived fourth quarter lead was a gift
    from a boneheaded play by the Browns defense, when a snap sailed
    by Moon, was recovered by the Marshall (?) who flipped it backwards
    to *nobody* and the Oilers recovered.
    
    Is it just me, or aren't the defenses satisfied any more with just
    recovering a fumble?  Do they always have to try to turn 'em all
    into "highlight film" touchdowns?

    The Browns looked good Sunday night.  There was a definite boost to the
    Browns offense, and that was Kevin Mack.  The Browns FINALLY
    established some type of running game.  This will allow them to do some
    damage in the AFC playoffs.
    
    And as for Matthews, well, at least we won........

    The upcomming game next week looks to be a cold one...

    	Wind...	  Probably won't be too bad...  ~10 mph
    
    With the running game comming into play in the Browns Offence, The
    Browns will probably run at least 2 times per set of downs in the
    beginning of the game then try and run every play nearer the end.
    I can see Bernie going for the big passing plays to Webster in the
    first drive.
    
    Luck of the coin...I've been noticing lately that the Browns have
    been winning the coin toss in allmost every game this year...I wish
    I knew the stats on points scored on the first drive of the game
    and the starting position of the opposition after a punt if no points
    were scored.  Field position plays a big part in how the Browns
    have won the last two games.  In last weeks game the Oilers didn't
    get posession of the ball beyond the 20 yard line in the first half.
    
    Ozzie Newsome gives speech....I don't know, but, it seems that the
    speech Ozzie gave after the Detroit game really pumped up the team.
    Its going to really be weard not hearing his name durring the game
    next year.  He still amazes me...against the Vikes, he caught this
    bullet from Bernie and I really thought he was going to break the
    tackel...I think he can go another year myself, but, I really don't
    think he would come back.  Durring the Vikes game the stadium officials

    Kelly has not been able to move the offense that well this season.
    My biggest worry is thurman thomas.  The weather should be fine
    and I predict a 17-13 Cleveland win.  The crowd will be a factor.
    
    Cleveland will score on its first possession, this will keep the
    crowd alive the entire game.  I look for a late Buffalo drive to
    end on a Kelly interception in the end zone.

    I just look for Buffalo's defense to come out smokin'. I'm not saying
    they'll get more than 3-4 sacks but I do feel the Browns O-line will
    have their hands full.  This could lead Bernie to hurry and throw 
    several away.  It's very important that Buffalo keep close so that they
    can run the ball on Cleveland's average run defense.  If Metcalf springs
    one early, the defense will fall into a prevent type defense which could
    spell disaster for the Bills.  I don't want to see Buffalo throw alot,
    that just means our defense is on the field all day! An early score for
    Buffalo is key.  They need to get the lead.  So unless the Bills
    defense plays shutout ball, the key for Cleveland is to stop the run.
    
    None of us know what's gonna happen, I just hope it's a good game.
    oh, and that the Bills come out on top!!!!

    That was really a great game yesterday!!!  The Bills just keep coming
    back.  The game was really a credit to both teams.  Since I am a
    Browns fan, I am glad it ended when and the way it did!  
    
    I was surprized the Browns defense did not get any pressure on Kelly.

    What a game,  I was going crazy, especially since I am also a Bills
    fan (being from Erieee Pa).  I'm just glad that the Browns came out

    The Browns are definately the most exciting team in the NFL.  There has
    been only one game (lost to Cincy 21-0) in the last 7 games, including
    3 overtime games.

    After this weekend, you have to believe that this is THE year.  For
    once, the breaks are going the Browns way.  The defense finally made 
    the big play to stop "the drive"..  On to Denver.
    
    These playoffs kinda remind me of '85.  We have the Steelers, an up and
    coming team, that just made the playoffs (like the Browns in '85), who
    go into a nasty place to play (in 85 it was Miami), lead for most of
    the game, and then run outta gas at the end.  In '85 the Pats were the 
    Cinderella story, they went down to Miami (where they had never won) and 
    beat up on the Fins to win a trip to the Super Bowl.  Now, if the
    Browns could only duplicate the Patriots effort in '85, its on to New
    Orleans (with hopefully a much different result).  Gee, even the Super
    Bowl sight is the same..  it's destiny!!!!!

Actually, for me, the season is over.  Very rarely do I follow football
once my team is out of it.

Because I absolutely HATE Denver, I'd love to see the Browns win next
week.  Besides, they're due.

I think that Denver got very lucky yesterday.  They were outplayed, and
it took the inexperience of a young, Cinderella-story, team to help them
win.  But Cleveland came within a hair's breadth of going home also.

The weather guesser is saying nice. 
Today it's in the upper 60's and beautiful.
It's supposed to chill down some towards the weekend, and then get nice by game
time Sunday.
( of course, the weather guesser is seldom right, so I  wouldn't be at all
  surprised to see 2 feet of snow come Sunday.)

Reeves was funny in the paper today. Carson and the Brownstains are really
sweating the altitude, and have applied and been granted permission to come out
24 hrs. prior to game time instead of the usual 48  hrs. They think that'll
help them handle the altitude better. Reeves was going on about how the morning
hours are the worst for oxygen content, which is why the Broncos usually wait
until 2:00 PM to practice. He said until 2:00 or so there's hardly any air at
all, so Cleveland is really going to be hurting, plus Bronco fans are much more
active and boisterous in the morning, so that the 11:30 kick-off time is really
going to work in the Broncos' favor. I was rollin'.

    Does anyone know what the final ruling was on that "interception" that
    occurred just before the end of the first half?  You know, the one
    where Bebe (sp?) was flipped on his head, the ball flew up in the
    air and (I think) Felix Wright caught it.  The ball never hit the

    I heard Reeves' lame attempt at humor. you actually thought that was
    funny? Getting used to the altitude had nothing to do with Cleveland
    waiting until Saturday to arrive. They didn't want to have to deal with
    the twits in the Denver media. If you wanted to get acclimated to the
    altitude you would come earlier, not later.

    	HOOT, I was reading Friday that Chuck Noll said that it takes
    over two weeks for the hemoglobins in your blood to adjust to the
    altitude and that being in Denver only a week was worse than getting
    into town the day before the game.  Maybe after seeing how well
    the Steelers played Sunday the Browns decided maybe Noll's idea
    wasn't so far fetched.

It had nothing to do with media. The Brown's team doctor told them that for an
in condition athlete, a minimum four to five days would be sufficient to
acclimate; but that barring this, it would be best to wait and come in at the
last day in order to lessen the impact of the altitude change. I guess it
affects different people in different ways, but I've always thought that for
someone in condition, it's mostly mental. I moved out here 14 years ago from
sea level. They day after I arrived, I packed up my camping gear and went up
above the 11,000  foot mark and camped out for a week, and had no problem
whatsoever with altitude.

Regarding the 48 hour rule:

	It's primarily to ensure that the team makes it in case of foul ups
with transportation, or weather, or whatever. The Rams got a pass on that rule
when they traveled to S.F. to play the Niners, because it was determined they
really wouldn't have any problems making it up there. Tagliabue has said that
this is one of the rules he will be reviewing in order to determine whether or
not it is either necessary or desirable.

    	too, about their 2PM (Pacific) instead of 1 PM starting time.

    I read the GT at lunch. I wonder if the Denver players/coaching staff

    man, Jim Lassiter, has an article on the front of the sports section.
    Lassiter is rather strange. At times he comes up with some real good

    Browns, "Brownies". He cried about the game starting on "Cleveland
    time". No mention of the fact that the other game is in San Francisco
    and the starting time is determined by the networks.
    
    Now lets flip the page. Well, well here we have the Rotten one telling
    a bit more of the truth. As it turns out, Cleveland was turned down by
    the Air Force Academy to use their practice facilities. So Denver wants
    Cleveland to come in on Friday and have no place to practice before the
    game on Sunday. Very sporting of them. Ralphie baby then points out
    that some Cleveland players will be in Denver Friday to face the press
    in a downtown hotel. 
    
    So, what's the prolblem? With the facts on the table, it appears to me
    that Denver is the ones doing the whining and attempting to get the
    unfair advantage.

	As a gesture of courtesy, I am perfectly willing to let them practice

    During the regular season visiting teams get to use the stadium for a
    light workout the day before the game, i.e. the day they arrive. In the
    playoffs they had to arrive two days before the game. For obvious
    reasons they can't practice on the game field for two days prior to the
    game. There are two acceptable facilities, the Air Academy and U. of
    Northern Colorado. The Air Academy said no. There was no report on
    UNC's availability. Once again, Reeves and the local media are making a
    big harry deal over nothing. The funny part is they are the ones doing
    all of the whining and then turn around and claim Cleveland is pulling
    a fast on and saying they are the ones whining. Just more lies, Reeves
    speciality.

    Dominance?  The Browns were down 24-21 early in the fourth quarter.
    Once the Donks scored, they had no choice, but to play hurry-up-offense
    which ended up in a couple of INTs.  
    
    Cleveland should've gone with the RUN a few more times.  FIRE the
    Offensive Coordinator.  His play calling was horrendous.  
    
    The Browns had a good season anyhow.  They were picked by most to
    be LAST in the AFC Central.  They played without Mack for most
    of the season, Metcalf was only a rookie, and Bernie had elbow 
    and finger problems.  Look for the Browns to hang tough next year.
    
    I think the AFC Central plays the NFC west next year.  This will
    test the toughness of the teams.

    	to me. Such calls (or non-calls) make me lose confidence in

    You simply don't remove your starting quarterback under those
    circumstances.  I think both of the late interceptions were only
    slightly overthrown and/or tipped by the receiver.  
    
    In terms of next year..  I don't hold much hope.  This team isn't
    getting any younger.  If they don't get some youth on the O-Line,
    Bernie will continue to be banged up every year.  They have too many
    holes to fill (O-line, defensive backs, tight end, defensive ends) 
    to do it in one year.  Plus they gave away some picks in order to move
    up and get Metcalf last year. 
    
    They've had 3 excellent chances to reach the Bowl, 2 times I feel they
    were the better team.  This year they definetly weren't.  It may be a 
    long time before they get another shot.

     Bernie DID NOT do a feet first slide.  He went down and curled
    up.  At that point he is fair game, just as any running back would 
    be. If you care to dispute this,  I have it on tape.  I reviewed
    this play a few times because I knew it would be one that would
    be held in contention.  On the other hand,  Elway did do a patented
    baseball slide and was hit anyway.  The ref maked the spot where 
    Elways A$$ hit the ground and would have spotted the ball there
    if there had not been a penalty.  The reason the flag was thrown
    IMHO was because the Dawg Defender came in Helmet first and was
    trying to lay a major league hit on Elway. And why not,  The Dawgs
    knew they couldn't win with Johnny "Big Game" Elway in the back
    field.  The Browns had a good year...  But the Broncos were

    He was curling up, turning sideways in the air before Smith hit

       How can you say the replays went the Dawgs way? Go back and look

    a bad call. It wouldn't have changed the outcome but it just shows

    Thanks Don, but that's not what I'm saying.  I'm talking about
    throughout the entire season and every season.  As much as I
    dislike many teams in the AFC, my loyalty is to the AFC.  
    Fans have a great deal to do with the game....as we saw yesterday 
    at Mile High.  I think fans of AFC teams need to be loyal AFC fans.
    It's true that you want teams in your division to lose more games 
    than your team...but I'd rather have an AFC team beat an NFC team 
    anytime.  If this happened every team in the AFC would still be even 
    up and the AFC would become stronger.  I know Raider, Seattle,
    and Browns fans that wouldn't even root for Denver if they had what
    they felt was a chance....and as far as I'm concerned...if you're on 
    the field...you have a chance.  I think a great many "AFC fans" carry
    team rivalries a bit too far.  That's what I'm saying.

You may be right about the 5-15 stuff, but with a motion penalty the play is 
whistled dead right away.  Elway's slide never woulda happened.

    OK Steven, lets use your descriptions of the play..  Smith was allready
    airborn before the slide.  In other words he's either a better athlete 
    than humanly possible (i.e. he can change his direction in mid-air) or
    he was gonna go after Kosar's knees.  Class real class.  
    
    The experts seemed to agree there was NO difference between the two hits.  
    One was penalized, one was not.  Obviously the refs wear the same
    orange and blue goggles that the Denver fans do.

    this game.  They were the better team yesterday, period.  The refs
    didn't alter the outcome, maybe the score, but not the outcome.

    One penalty was called on the Broncos, ONLY ONE.  Come on, I saw two

	I don't know about Jill, but if the Donks had lost, I'd be pulling for

      Come on Hausrath (sp?).  The Browns were only 3.5 point underdogs. 
    The Broncos more than covered the spread.  The Browns off really only
    scored 10 points.  The defense gave them the other 7 with the fumble
    recovery and return to the 1 yrd line.
    
      And as to the other 2 SB's,  you can't sit there and say the clowns
    would of made it a better game,  because they weren't there.  They
    could have played worse than the Broncos seeing how the Broncos were a
    better team both years, thats why the Broncos were in the SB and not
    the clowns.

    Sure, sure..  easy to say when you're on the winning end of it.  If you
    had lost all three conference championship games to the Browns I tend
    to doubt you'd still be rooting for them this year.  Face it, Denver is
    an obnoxious team,  I find them very hard to like, yet very easy to 
    dislike.  And the country is sick of seeing them go down in the bowl 
    year after year.  As usual they'll have played their best football of 
    the year in the Championship game, leaving nothing for the Super Bowl.

     I can't agree here.  I'd say the Sox choked in the series vs the Mets,
     for example.  If a championship contender has a significant lead "late"

    It was interesting...I saw a Letterman rerun about a week ago with
    Eric Dickerson and they had lost in the playoffs and Dave asked him
    who he was going to root for, he said..."I'm an AFC man, I gotta
    go with Cinci".  My sentiments exactly!
    
    Also, it might be easy to say when we're on the winning end...but
    I've rooted for the AFC team in the past when we weren't there...

We were watching the Browns-Denver game at my dad's house with all of the usual
commotion and flak (my dad and younger brother are Bengal fans, my older
brother and I have remained faithful Browns fans).

Late in the 4th quarter when my brother and I are in deep depresion, An NBC
promo comes on for the coming weeks shows for a movie called "Blue Bayou" comes
on and my dad says "just like Dixon and Minniefield". 

Quizzical eyebrows lift around the room. He says, "Yeah, you know, blew-by-you".

    The Dawgs were clearly outplayed in this AFC Championship game.
    It really seemed like they didn't even show up to play.  They
    could never get the offense on track and the defense didn't play
    well at all.
    
    Now, as far as the calls go... its all part of the game.  PERIOD!
    
    As far as the donks fans go... congratulations...  (uhm... I'm
    talking about the donks fans who have been in here the entire 
    year btw, and not those who entered in the last one or two weeks -
    i'm sure they know who they are)... 
    
    As far as the Super Bowl goes... the 49ers are clearly the top
    team.  Hopefully Denver will show up for the game, unlike the
    last two Super Bowls and unlike the Browns in the AFC championship
    game.  If Denver plays a great game, they have a chance, but I just
    don't see it.  I'm not saying this because Cleveland lost either.
    Had it been Cleveland v.s. SF, I would have been hopeful, but
    also realistic... the 49ers are a machine...  they are on a roll.
    
    As far as the Rams go... anyone who thinks the Rams would have
    destroyed either Cleveland or Denver is fooling themselves. 

    Even though I don't root for either team(I'm a Jests fan),I was
    pulling for the Browns because I felt sorry for them and their fans.
    Cleveland has had the longest major championship drought of any
    big city and has some of the most loyal and enthusiastic fans. It's
    too bad they lost,they're certainly not a young and up and coming
    team. Denver may not have been the better team in 1986 or 87 but
    there was no doubt on Sunday.
    
    Face it,Browns fans,you were lucky to beat Minnesota,lucky to beat
    Houston and extremely lucky to beat Buffalo. I learned many years
    ago not to try to predict winners on anything other than who has
    the better team. In other words,bet with your head not your heart.

        Sports,like life is not fair. Does San Francisco need another Super
    Bowl? They've won 3. Denver is 0-3. San Francisco will win again.
    That may not be fair,but they're the best.
    
    In New York we have the Rangers,in Boston they have the Red Sox,in
    Chicago they have the Cubs. All these teams have gone dry since
    before 1950. At least the Browns gave you some great championship
    football in the 50's and 60's culminating with the 1964 title. When
    you least expect it one of the Cleveland teams will win a title.
    
    It would have been nice for the Browns to have won,but they just
    aren't good enough. Cleveland fans,wake up and be good losers and
    stop taking this stuff so seriously.

    they root for a different team than I do.  I *hate* the behavior

    and D-cell batteries and call in bomb threats.  I think that behavior 
    is unbecoming even the most loyal, enthusiastic fan alive!!!

    Final words on the whole subject..  
    
    First, way back when, after the game in Cleveland (and about 2 months 
    before we ever saw you in here, Jill), I strongly critized the actions
    of the Fans in the pound who were throwing batteries on the field.  
    I also critized those noters who because of one or two bad apples, 
    labled all Cleveland fans as a bunch of loosers.  In fact Cleveland 
    fans are some of the most loyal (with these teams they have to be) and 
    knowledgable fans around.  Lets stop the attacks on Cleveland fans and 
    noters.  I've never seen any personal attacks on Bronco's players
    coming from Cleveland noters (other than an occasional mention of
    Elways teeth), but we get comments from Denver noters (I'm not saying
    all of them, you know who you are) about Bernie wearing dresses, about 
    Mack snorting the fifty yardline, etc. etc.  Give it a break, is this 
    being a fan?  Is this supporting your team?  I doubt it. 
    
    In terms of the game, I stated first thing Monday morning that the
    Bronco's outplayed the Browns on both sides of the ball.  That the 
    Browns didn't play like they wanted it half as much as Denver did. 
    I also stated that I thought (and most impartial noters have agreed),
    that the refs called a Denver game, but that this did not effect the 
    outcome.  
    
    I'm not having a problem accepting the loss, are you guys having a
    problem accepting the win, or what?   Boy, you can't give your opinion
    in here without being attacked from all angles.  It's time for you
    folks to give it a rest, after all, you won, be happy!

    I don't think there is such a great rivalry between the Browns and
    Donks.  They have been the two best AFC teams over the past 4 years
    and naturally fans from both teams begin to quarrel.

    Wait a minute Jeff.  I didn't just appear in the notes file for
    the first time.  I was hear a the beginning of the year and I
    said I wasn't going to be involved a whole lot.  I've put a 
    note in here and there, but not much as I had said at the start.
    I've always been a loyal Bronco fan.  Being a loyal noter isn't
    as important to me.  Weren't you the one who said there's more
    to life than professional football?   I couldn't stay in here all
    year and still believe that.  I've got other things to be doing.
    
    Also if you go back and read .232, I said that I hate the behavior
    of the fans that did do those things...that doesn't include everyone. 
    But be real...it also wasn't 1 or 2 bad apples.  The Dawg pound has

    Actually folks, I didn't want to admit it right after the Browns loss 
    because I knew I would be accused of being a front runner, but, the 
    9ers are my favorit NFC team, and always have been.  I imagine that if
    the Bronco's were going against some obnoxius NFC team like the Bears 
    or Eagles, I'd be rooting for them... but when it comes down to my
    favorit NFC team vs. my least favorit AFC team, I've got to go with the

    All right Jack.  Here's a disclaimer.  I will *never* understand
    the game of football as well as any man who has played it and
    been brought up in that whole sports mindset.  There are things
    you guys take for granted about the game that unless you've 
    played the game, you're not going to know about or unless you
    spend hours reading the rule book (which if someone will send
    me one....I'll work on it).
    
    I've only been interested in football since 1983...not very long
    compared to most guys in here who have been playing it most of
    their lives.  I've come a long way in my understanding of the 
    game and I still have a ways to go.   Some of my comments make it
    obvious when I've hit an unknown area.  I quickly get put in my
    place and eureka I've learn a little bit more about football.
    However, I don't think I quite deserve the abuse you seem to think 
    you have the God-given right to dish out.

    You know Jack.  I didn't even plan on being in the notes file
    this year because sometimes with some of the things that are

    I've been out of town and haven't been noting for a while.  I'm back
    and I've read all the latest inputs.  The season is over for the Browns
    and I'm going to give it my best shot for the big picture.  The NFC and
    the AFC west are weak divisions with SF and the Donks as the
    powerhouses in those divisions.  They will always have a good record
    and most likely get to the play-offs.  The 9ers have been the team of
    the 80s and definitely the team to beat.  The AFC central on the other
    hand is probably the toughest and they spend most of the year tearing
    each other apart.  So it would be tough to get a 12-4 record in the
    central.  3 of the 4 teams in the central made it to the play-offs. 
    Odds would have it that one of them would make it.  What happend?  Well
    we are talking pro sports and there has to be talent on every team. 
    This would mean on any given day any team could win.  This is what
    happend at Denver.  The Browns didn't show up for the game and the
    Donks did.  I believe that player for player the Browns have a better
    team.  I agree with Jill and cheer on a AFC team but, there's one thing
    that isn't in the rule book.  The love hate soap opera that exist with
    Browns/Donk fans.  As for the 9ers I'm just sick of them.  As I write
    this note I'm thinking would it better for the Browns be spanked by the
    the SB champs rather than the team that got humiliated by the 9ers. 
    I've played highly competative sports and it always felt better that
    the team that beat you goes all the way, just so you can say the only
    team that beat us was the champs.  I think the browns  will be routing
    for the the Donks.  God it hurts my fingers to type this, so here comes
    relief for my flangies.  As for the rest of ther divisions, WHO CARES.

I'm not a Niners fan, but I've got to say I don't think that the
NFC West is a weak division.  The NFC Championship game was between
the first and second place teams in that division, and New Orleans
is no pushover.  True, the Falcons aren't very good, but on the
whole I'd say the NFC West is very competitive, and that in any
given season, anyone of the top three could take that division.

San Francisco is a great team, and they peaked perfectly this year.
Los Angeles was extremely competitive too.

    I think the Browns may have made their first mistake of the new
    90 season.  I saw in the USA Today that the Browns placed Hanford
    Dixon on the Plan B free agent list and they protected Ricky Bolden.
    Dixon may be a old player but he plays the hole season.  Ricky Bolden
    is an Offensive line man that has been on IR for most of his career.

    will not receive compensation, and does not have right of first

    with another team, IF HE SO DESIRES. He does not have to sign with the
    highest bidder. He does not have to sign with another team. He can

    doesn't want to go elsewhere, he doesn't negotiate. Several of the Plan
    B players were requested not to go elsewhere but were put on the list
    because they can only protect 37. But, even though their current team
    still wants them, they can go elsewhere if they want to and someone
    else wants them and is willing to pay.

    their team's front office?
    
    What I don't understand is why the teams are finding ways around this, 
    when I thought the owners were the ones who created it in the first 
    place.  After all there is no bargaining agreement, therefore, the

    Jim Shofner has been around the NFL for a while.  He was a college
    head coach (TCU?) back in the seventies and had a stint with the
    Browns as an assistant under Sam Rutigliano.  Shofner is a good

    Zeke Bratkowski gained fame as Bart Starr's backup during the Green
    Bay glory years of the sixties.  He's bounced around the NFL as
    an assistant coach, most recently with the Jets.  Many of the Jets
    coaches have found employment elsewhere - Joe Walton, Billie Matthews,
    Larry Pasquale (special teams with the Chargers) and now, Zeke.

    Alibengal here...  The Bengals have come to the realization that the
    team to beat in the AFC Central is the Cleveland Browns.  The Browns

    The Bengals were 5 & 1 within the AFC Central last year....clearly
    showing that it was the strength of the shedule they played OUTSIDE of
    their own division that caused their demise.  They need NO trades to
    rise to the top of the Central in 1990.  The last place schedule
    they'll be playing, combined with their dominance within their division
    should go a long way towards making them AFC Central champs next year.
    The return of Ickey Woods shouldn't hurt either.

    division.  They'll play a second place team, a third place team
    and 2 fourth place teams (the Patriots and Seahawks), along with

    Division last year, but, I know it can't be any harder than what
    the Browns had.  All last year proved was that the Bangles played
    ball best when playing divisional games...probibly because they
    were scouted better.  It also proves that you can't win the division
    by just beating everyone in the division.  You must play good ball
    every game...thats EVERY game!  Don't look for the Bangles to be
    in the playoffs this comming year...other than maybe...a wild card
    spot.  The Browns will still be the team to beat!  The Browns are
    making several changes for this year on the offensive side and there
    really isn't a need to make any defensive changes.....

    Hal the reason they could have won both games is becasue the offense
    was doing it's job not the defense. A good defensive team does not

    OK Mike, here I am..  I'm just recovering from my business trip to
    Phoenix..  I didn't splurge and play a good course, but I did get in
    18 holes at a public course (dormant grass, it's different!)...  
    
    Sure gets the old blood pumping for spring!  
    
    Anyhow, on the Browns.. yeah they need some help defensively too..  but 
    most of their problem was the coaching (too many blitzes) plus as
    usual the lack of an effective pass rush.   I don't see Pittsburgh
    passing them up this year, though.

    Mike Baab as a plan B free agent with the Patriots.  
    
    Glad to see Baab will be back in a Browns uniform..  Does this mean

       The story said the Browns want to put as many corners as possible on

    Raymond Clayborn Was on Boston TV last night. He has not signed
    with the Browns. He wants to wait until April 1st to talk to Rod
    Rust and the Pats then he will make a decision. He stated that if
    Ray Berry were still coach he would have already signed with Cleveland.
    
    It's beginning to become apparent that alot of these Plan B guys

    The Oilers have won 3 season series against the Browns prior to
    the 1989 season:  1975, 1978 and 1981.  The Browns won the season
    series in 1970-1973, 1976, and 1984-1986.  The Browns also won the
    only game played in 1982.  The season series was split in 1974,
    1977, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1987 and 1988.  Before 1989, the all time
    record was Cleveland 24, Houston 13 with the playoffs standing at
    Houston 1, Cleveland 0.

    knows, they might change the playoffs to include strength of schedule
    which would hurt the Browns.  All these free wins...

    Cleveland didn't play Houston in the playoffs this year.  Pittsburgh
    knocked Houston out and Cleveland played Buffalo, then lost to Denver.
    In 1988, the regular season series was split and Houston won the

    backs in the off season..
    
    Seems that Bud Carson is a little woried about how the Lions picked
    apart his defense last year with the run-and-shoot offense.  Add to
    that the fact that Houston will most likely adopt this style, and it's
    fairly obvious that some changes were needed.  Bud's approach seems to 
    be to throw defensive backs at the problem, in some situations as many
    as 6 backs might be used.  One requirement for these d-backs, they must
    be above average tacklers, able to take on the running back in the open
    field. Should make for some very interesting games next year.

    have lost 3 players (with 3 days left to go), the most notable being
    Keith Jones (rb) to Dallas.  TE Ron (Rod?) Middleton was also taken, plus 
    a safety whose name I didn't recognize.  Not exactly major losses..

    safety who went to the proBowl in 1986, '87, and '88.

       Browns have not only signed 3 Pats, they're all STARTERS. Now that
    they have some real players they might even be able to beat the Donks.

    put that on the secondary.  Both Kelly and Elway had all day to
    throw the ball.  I think the Defensive line was just wore out by
    the end of the season.  I think Baker and Hairston should retirer
    or just be spot players.  The Browns need to start some of the younger
    defensive linemen.

I really used to get a kick outta you Cleveland guys.  Really.  But

    	Art Modell sounds more feisty than ever and raring to go, 
    following recovery from his second heart bypass surgery.  He returned
    from the owners' meetings in Dallas saying he's feeling much stronger.
     His voice has fire it it and he minces no words.  He is frustrated.
     He wants that Super Bowl NOW.  He says, "I'M TIRED OF WAITING.
     I'M TIRED OF PROMISES.  WE HAVE GIVEN OUR COACHES EVERYTHING THEY

    Although he says his words shouldn't be construed as a threat to

    If I remember right, they brought in a couple of new people to replace
    Trestman.  Then, other than the fact that they have 3 Strength and
    Conditioning coaches, it's not that much different than most of
    the other staffs around the league.  Cincinnati and Pittsburgh
    traditionally have fewer assistants than anybody.  Having 3 strength
    and conditioning coaches is very unusual.  Trainers, equipment managers
    and film people usually aren't considered part of the coaching staff.

    	Reggie Langhorne is still on crutches following arthroscopic
    knee surgery but vows he'll be ready for the camp opener.  The quiet
    Langhorne is a special person.  Throughout the season he refuses
    to make paid appearances, turning down big checks, but always is
    ready to give his services gratis for the benefit for needy kids.
     He currently is heading a group seeking to purchase a home for
    mentally retarded children in Smithfield, Va., where he lives.

    	When several Browns went to the Grafton Correctional Institute
    recently for a basketball game against the guards.....it had to
    be halted when the concrete gym floor became too wet......

    when he followed with his own impromptu rap, using the names of

    	Modell has no Super Bowl ring but he has already attained an
    honor never before accorded by the NFL.  The meetings in Dallas
    were opened with Commissioner Paul Tagliabue welcoming Modell back
    after his surgery.  Then, to the astonishment of the Browns' boss,
    the Commissioner presented him with a framed testimonial, 3 feet
    by 5 feet, signed by all the other 27 owners.  The plawue read in
    part, "Your leadership and achievement in securing the latest round
    of TV contracts again makes it clear you are one of those special
    people. . . We want to thank you for a job very well done, achieved
    with grace and in the best interests of the league."  This singular
    tribute, of course, was for the $3.645 billion - thats right, billion
    - four-year contracts he negotiated with the various networks. 
    This is the biggest deal in the history of TV.  To put the figure
    in perspective, its far greater than the prices paid for entire
    networks and studios.  Moreover, the NFL didn't sell anything. 
    It just rented out its product for four years, which makes the deal
    even more phenomenal. ... Jim Bailey, a Browns vice president who
    was at the meeting, said Modell was stunned by the tribute "and
    was deeply touched."  It was an emotional moment."

    I will say this about Art Modell - despite his legendary non-patience
    with coaches and his tendency to interfere too much in the football
    part of the operation, he is a brilliant negotiator and the NFL
    owes him a debt of gratitude for doing such a great job bleeding
    money out of the networks during a time when rights fees are going
    down.  That was a nice gesture by his peers.

    He is a short yardage FB. I believe he had one good year with the
    pathetic Jets. He is a relatively slow steamroller type that will
    get you the tough 1-2 yards. That is if the coach isn't so stupid
    to give him the ball 5 yards deep in the backfield on a draw. Good

    I just heard Bernie Bonehead might miss the start on the
    season.Seemingly he got arrested for wearing womens clothes when
    entering the Gents toilets.He faces a six month sentence.His only
    alibi was he said he was colour blind,and was breaking the clothes
    in for his wife.

    Gee, I thought that Vinny Testravert in Tampa Bay was the only
    color blind QB in the NFL.  You sure you got the story straight.
    I know how information can change when you Scot's go to the pub
    and start swapping storys.  
    
    OLD BOOMER is in for a long season or perhaps I should say short
    season.  I heard that Cinci's offensive coordinater left and 
    SAM the man is taking total control of the offense.  That along
    with them lossing one of their best offensive lineman should get
    OLD BOOMER on the IR list around game 6 of the season.  

    
    			CHANGE IN LINE
    
    The Browns waived defensive tackle Carl (Big Daddy) Hairston yesterday
    after the 14-year veteran declined to retire.  They filled the roster
    spot by re-signing tackle Darryl Sims.
    	A source on the team said Hairston "was crushed" when the club
    asked him recently to retire.  The source said Hairston was upset
    at the timing of the decision and believed it harmed his chances
    of latching on with another team.
    	Team rosters are limited to 80 players for training camp.  Since
    National Football League camps open this week and next virtually
    all roster spots are accounted for.
    	Nevertheless, Hairston, 37, chose to be waived so he can try
    to play a 15th season with another club.
    	Because of the development of some of our young defensive linemen
    and in fairness to Carl, we approached him about retiring.  Ernie
    Accorsi, executive vice president, said in a statement released
    by the club.  Carl then asked to be waived to see if any other NFL
    team had an interest in him.
    	If carl finds someone interested he wants to give it a try.
     If not, he's expressed an interest in joining the team in another
    capacity and we've offered him a position.
    	Kevin Byrne, vice president of public relations, said Hairston
    has been offered a part-time position in the personnel department.
    	Hairston yesterday declined to elaborate on the club's decision.
     I really want to get my thoughts together first, he said.
    	In another statement, Browns President Art Modell said:  "With
    a man who has given so much to this organization the last five
    (actually, it's six) years, you want to make sure he's treated with
    all the dignity he deserves.
    	
    Hairston led the team in sacks in 1986 and 87 and was third in 85
    and 89.  He had 37.5 sacks in his six years in Cleveland, more than
    any other Brown during that time.
    	He has 93 sacks in his career, 46.5 since it became an official
    statistic in 82, ranking him 27th among active players.  
    	A respected team leader, Hairston was voted defensive most valuable
    player by the Cleveland Touchdown Club in 87 and was defensive captain
    from 86-88.  He also served five years as the Eagles defensive captain.
     In 14 seasons, Hairston missed only three games because of injury.
    	He might best be remembered for running 40 yards with a lateral
    following a Clay Matthews interception in a 87 game against Cincinnati.
    	The Browns gave up only a 85 ninth-round draft choice for Hairston,
    then 32.
    
    
    	The club also announced it had waived backup center and long
    snapper Tom Baugh and signed three draft choices - tight end, Scott
    Galbraith, seventh round, USC; cornerback Mike Wallace, 10th, Jackson
    State; and quarterback Clemente Gordon, 11th, Grambling.
    
    	The Browns announced that window sale for home exhibition games
    Aug 19 and Aug 25 will begin Monday.  Single game regular season
    tickets go on sale Aug 27.

    The Browns Frank Minnifield said he will be in Cleveland today with
    his wife, Diane, and his 16 month old son, Chase, and the veran
    cornerback who hasn't signed his 1990 contract, said he hopes to
    be at Lakeland Community College when the team opens training camp
    Sunday.
    	Our bags are packed and in the car, he said when reached yesterday
    at his real estate office in Lexington, Ky.  I've wound up all my
    business activities.
    	Minnifield, who siad he's in the best shape of my life after
    working out three times a day, can't join drills unless he is signed.
     He realizes that.
    	It might be a last minute thing. but I think it can be done,"
    he said of the possible signing.  "I'm optimistic. It would be best
    for everybody."
    	Vice President Ernie Accorsi, who negotiates contracts but doesn't
    like to comment on them would say only that he is "hopeful" that
    all the unsigned veterans would be in camp before the 6 pm deadline
    Sunday.  There are 13 of them, including Minnifield.
    	"I haven't heard from all of them," said Accorsi, "but they
    all have our offer."
    	Stan White, former Baltimore Colts linebacker who is handling
    negotiations for Minnifield, could not be reached for comment.

    now they've proven it.

    	Wyche congratulated the woman and offered her a kiss as she

    prize for dipping Wyche.

    	Marv scratched me, Carson quipped, referring to Buffalo coach

    Will after getting shut out there is not much you can say.  Pagel
    looked really bad or the recievers were not in sync with him.  It
    looked like the Brown offense took the day off.  
    
    Right now the thing that concerns me is they have 4 defensive starters
    last year holding out.  All 3 starting linebackers (Mathews, Johnson
    and Grayson) last year are holding out, and Minnifield is still
    a hold out.
    
    I just saw a report indicating that they may trade Minnifield to 
    Altanta for a offensive lineman.  This may help them since Paul
    Farren one of only two returning offensive linemen is also hold
    out.  
    
    So right now I would say the Brown's problem is to get all their
    veteran players in camp.  I will be more concerned about winning games
    when the games count to making the play offs.
                                     

    The Browns traded a conditional draft choice (year unknown) to the
    Philadelphia Eagles for OL Ken Reeves. Reeves always played weel when
    he was healthy. He'll be missed in Philadelphia.

    I have not seen anything on signing Flex Wright or Minnifiled.
    
    On the OL the only then I've seen is that they just lost the guy
    they got from the Eagles with a pulled muscle.  The Browns OL

    	Ahemmm, The Browns really arn't that bad off!  Clayborn has
    taken his spot with Grayson signing last week.  Bolden is in for
    the offence and Farren will be signed soon.  Just this week, the
    browns are starting to go with a front line that will not be moved
    around again.  I guess I'll have to start relaying some of the 
    information I've been getting.
    	And, why hasn't anyone said anything about the game last
    Saturday???  The Browns took the Packers to the Van!  :-)  The
    game was great!  The big O took control of the ball on the ground
    and got over 160 yards rushing.  Hoard looked great.  I didn't
    catch the first half so I can't say much for the 1st string...
    	Bernie did however hurt his foot...sprained ancle.  Bar looks
    to be out for a while.  A roughing the kicker deal....broke his
    finger and some ribs.  Terible thing to do in a preseason game.
    	Dilifonte looked great on D.  
    	Word is that Manoa will be out on his butt this year.  Olofant
    (sp) looked like crap running back punts and kickoffs.  But, they
    say that Metcalf will do the job once the season starts off full
    swing.  
    	Oh yea, hey Jake, you got tickets to the season opener???  The
    game is allready sold out...75,000 tickets gone!  Thats even before
    the ticket sales open at the window!  Look for another blowout!
    	Lets see, wasn't it something like 51 to ZIP???  Yep, I think
    so!

    Well, the Clowns looked pretty ragged again in the pre-season. EVen
    with an extra game, it seems pretty clear to me and the rets of the
    Western world that the Clowns are looking at the basement o fthe AFC
    Central - aw gee Wally, that's a shame isn't it ?
