|
Re. Paul's previous p-string: "Wake-up call for Roland Hemond":
Paul, at the Gammons/Shaughnessy event which Mark Fredrickson
graciously invited me to the other night, I got a few Orioles'
questions in to Peter Gammons in between the Red Sox-bashing. I asked
him why the O's were so inactive at the winter meetings and on the
free-agent market, and specifically what he thought of Roland Hemond
as a GM. His answers were generally favorable to Baltimore management.
First off, Gammons stated that the Orioles have no surplus areas in
which to trade, which I tend to agree with. I don't consider Joe
Orsulak as valuable trade-bait, and any young pitching talent is
off limits. He says that because the Orioles have several holes
to fill Hemond still considers the team to be on a three-year plan, so
Gammons understands what they're doing. The thinking is that *now* is
not the time to act on marginal free agents. This makes some sense.
In my opinion, the inflated price of free agents tends to favor a more
equitable talent distribution, rather than the stock-piling by the
richest teams that everyone fears. By the time teams like the Angels,
Royals, and Padres are through with their big-buck signings and appease
their own home-grown talent, they'll probably have to be relatively
inactive for a period of years due to an almost self-imposed salary cap.
Free agents will be available every year, and when the Orioles are in a
position where they're one or two players away, then they'll be in a
decent financial position to act.
Gammons considers Hemond to be something of a character, an
absent-minded professor type, but a very capable baseball man. He's
also got the more practical Doug Melvin around to straighten him out
when he gets a little carried away (no danger of that this winter, I
guess). One surprise though: Hemond was throwing Phil Bradley's name
around the winter meetings last week, which is kind of surprising since
the Orioles were very happy to acquire him last year, and supposedly
Baltimore is the team Bradley has always wanted to play for. He
slumped badly in the second half of last year, but why can't this
talented player stick anywhere?

| Paul and Glenn FWIW Roland Hemond is scheduled to be on tomorrow
night's Sportsline show on WBAL from 6-8 PM. Rex Barney will be
the host so don't look for too many difficult questions to be asked
by him. If they open the lines to calls it might be a little more
interesting. In trying to hype the show Jeff Rimer tonight stated
Hemond continues to try to improve the club by exploring trade
possibilities and while there are a few rumors (I haven't heard
any lately) nothing appears imminent.

Kevin,
Maybe you could help me with this new ballpark thing. The O's are
in a stadium that is less than 30 years old I believe, built in
'53?
Now, they're going out and building a new park. Nothing wrong
with the old one, structurally sound and seating capacity not an
issue.
The location would be the only reason that I could fathom. But,
is that enough of a reason to go out and build a new park?
I understand that the other reason behind building a new park is
because there is more real estate available right next door where
the city would like to put up a football stadium and create a
complex similar to Philly. Does Balt. really think they're going
to get another NFL franchise? Am I right that this is the major
reasoning behind this new park?
FYI, when I saw this new site, I was told that the builders were
leaving one of the walls from a building that had been torn down,
it's going to be the left field wall, that's right, the
brick monster?

|
21.8 | | NAC::G_WAUGAMAN | | Fri Jan 05 1990 08:46 | 31 |
|
Daryll,
Under the current Camden Yards design, the old B & O warehouse will sit
*behind* the rightfield wall. A small part of the rightfield wall,
down the line, will be a tall structure as in Fenway, but it's not part
of the brick warehouse. The warehouse may even be torn down, as it's not
attached to the ballpark at all, but serves as sort of a historical
backdrop.
There's plenty of good rationale for the park, even in the absence of
the NFL returning to the city. First of all, Memorial Stadium is about
60% low-quality, low-price upper deck seating. Secondly, it's
inaccessible, especially to the large Washington-Maryland beltway
market to the southwest of the city. So there is solid financial
reasoning behind the new stadium. I like Memorial Stadium, but after I
saw the beautiful designs for Camden Yards, I was completely sold on
the idea.
I don't know about Baltimore's chances for the NFL. Personally, I
could live without it (keep in mind I don't live in that area anymore,
though, and have no plans to return). As much as loved the Colts, after
they've moved out the Orioles have enjoyed the greatest popularity in
their history. It put an end to all talk of sharing the Orioles with
D.C., which is another plus for the strong commitment to the new stadium.
The new stadium will guarantee the Orioles' residence well into the
21st century.

Maybe it's the fact that my brother-in-law won't be able to cater
the clubhouses after the move that bothers me :-)
His restaurant is currently just down the street from Memorial.
And I agree with you, it's a hard commute getting in there.

21.10 | Orioles trade | POCUS::GLENNON | | Wed Jan 10 1990 12:09 | 11 |
| Reported today that the Orioles have traded Larry sheets to the
Tigers for inf. Mike Brumley. ??? Not that I would expect that much
back for Sheets but with the release of Traber there now appears
to be a shortage of left handed bats. If Orsulak is to be the DH(?)
I am not aware of any left hand hitting people on the bench if you
assume that the outfield against most right handers would include
Anderson and Finley. I think I recall Milligan having a high on
base % vs righties halfway through the season but then cooling off
a bit. Are they sold on Melendez?
Kevin
|
21.11 | more on O's | POCUS::GLENNON | | Wed Jan 10 1990 12:36 | 23 |
| Some of the things I have read or heard from the Sportsline programs:
1) Rumor of a trade with the Orioles sending Worthington to the
Royals for D. Tartabull. I'll add that this was one of four or five
trades (Royals and other teams) which mentioned Tartabull's name.
2) Juan Bell's experiment with ss is over. Apparently the club has
decided if he's going to make it to the bigs it will be as a second
baseman.
The above two from the most recent Baseball America.
3) Jim Rice but be invited as a non-roster player to spring training
to be handled similar to Bob Horner last spring.
Further on -1. The Orioles now seem to have an excess of backup
infielders Hulett, Gonzales (who is working on his hitting this
winter with one of the Oriole coaches) and now Brumley with Juan
Bell ? waiting in the wings. Maybe this is a move that will lead
to another. What's the story with Brumley? I think Detroit got him
from San Diego if I remember correctly.

I'm glad that Orioles don't want to trade Craig "Cal" Worthington
for Jose "Can You See" Tartabull. Craig ("Cal") has got too much
potential. While I hadn't heard it before, the Globe indicated that
Tartabull is not exactly the most liked guy in the clubhouse, either.
Guys, what do you think? Should we move the Orioles discussions to
BASEBALL permanently (that's my preference)? It's primarily a
three-person note here, so whatever you guys prefer...

21.16 | On with the move! | POCUS::GLENNON | | Wed Jan 10 1990 16:36 | 6 |
| Fine with me. I also agree in not trading Worthington for Tartabull,
this guys name is mentioned far too often in trade rumors to trade
someone as valuable as Worthington for. The club does not need to
risk a trade for a potential troublemaker at this point.

21.23 | And the obligatory commentary | SHALOT::HUNT | Wyld Stallyns Rules | Thu Aug 30 1990 16:14 | 171 |
| Naturally, we must "analyze" this listing ...
1. Kathie Lee Gifford 17,796 votes
Obviously, people just can't stand to look at Regis Philbin.
Either that or Frank Gifford stuffed the ballot boxes. Kathie
Lee is tough stuff but 17,000+ votes is a bit amazing. I would
take a Carnival cruise if I knew she'd be on da boat, however.
2. Jaclyn Smith 3,603
Has-been. Typecast forevermore as one of Charlie's Bimbi. Must
have been the sentimental vote. Either that or the brain-dead
vote. Should stick to cosmetics ads.
3. Nicollette Sheridan 3,074
Who ???
4. Delta Burke 2,746
Yawn. The South has thousands of women whom this designing woman
would need to get in line behind.
5. Melissa Brennan 2,620
At least it's not Melissa Gilbert.
6. Kirstie Alley 2,470
Awesome. A man's woman. Won my heart when she told Arsenio that
she fantasizes about riding nude behind her guy on a Harley.
Yowza.
7. Dana Delany 2,107
Can go the distance. A little too nice on "China Beach". Now
needs some "nasty" girl roles to increase her "guy" appeal.
8. Connie Sellecca 2,014
Another has-been but she's got staying power. Has to avoid the
Lindsay Wagner syndrome of showing up in nearly every
tear-jerkin', low-budget "Made For TV" movie about somebody's
fight with cancer or booze or an airline hijacking or ...
9. Stepfanie Kramer 1,841
Who ??? Is this the lady from "Heart To Heart" ??? If so, she's
way over the hill. Must be a "veteran's committee" vote.
10. Jasmine Guy 1,822
So-so. The "Whitley" shtick was enough to boot Lisa Bonet back
to Big Daddy Cos' show but it gets a little old after a while.
You sorta root for the "Dee-Wayne" loser to pop her a good one
upside da haid every once in a while.
11. Valerie Bertinelli 1,808
A serious case of "Lindsay Wagner" syndrome. Needs some meaty
roles in a big way. Oh, and bring Eddie Van Halen with ya, Val.
If we start to yawn, we can always ask Eddie to play some riffs
for us.
12. Phylicia Rashad 1,617
Another so-so. Nice smile, nice eyes, attractive figure. Kinda
plain and she plays the second fiddle to Cos too much. Twelfth
place is about right. Sorta get the feeling she wears the pants
in her and Ahmad Rashad's family. I mean the guy proposed to her
during the Macy's Parade, fer cryin' out loud.
Honorable mentions:
Jane Pauley 1,294
Who cares ??? I'd ask her what Garry Trudeau has planned next
for Uncle Duke before I'd start sizing her up for fun 'n' games.
Vanna White 1,291
Vastly under-rated. The best letter turner in the business.
Women's version of Ed McMahon -- found a way to get paid an
enormous sum for doin' absolutely nuttin'. A woman to be
admired. And can go to her left with amazing speed and skill.
Markie Post 818
Not bad. She's had a couple of "Night Court" episodes where she
let her hair hang down, so to speak. She's got the total package.
Just needs a chance to "play every day".
Wendy Kilbourne 752
A little too sweet, a little too nice. There were better ladies
in "North and South" especially Leslie Anne Downes, Kirstie Alley,
and the gal who played the big-time slut, Ashton. Sigh.
Holly Robinson 674
Who ???
"Downtown" Julie Brown 666
MTV bubble-haid. Go back to wherever you're faking that accent
from.
Victoria Principal 402
Another "Lindsay Wagner" syndrome sufferer. Lost all respect for
her after she "dreamed" Bobby Ewing back onto the show. Nothing
a few more Playboy spreads wouldn't cure, however.
Deborah Norville 363
A TV news bubblehead. Worse than an MTV bubblehead. Rather have
Jane Pauley tell me what's wrong with the world. Hell, I'd
rather have David Hartman tell me the news than this gal.
Christina Applegate 143
Future star. Has all the moves and has the perfect role. The
sky's the limit.
Some others who were left out ...
Paula Abdul
Enough to make me buy stock in Diet Coke. My, oh my, oh my. Can
have anything she wants from me. Where do I sign ???
Joan Lunden
Not too shabby in a maternal kinda way. Overplays the "mom" thing
on "Good Morning, America" just a bit but ya gotta figure she
didn't get all dem kids from doing crossword puzzles, right ???
Alley Mills (sp?)
Kevin Arnold's mom on "The Wonder Years" has got the right stuff,
too. You can do a helluva lot worse than a gal like her.
Joanna Kerns
Another "mom" type. Plays Carol Seaver on "Growing Pains" and has
to give way to Alan Thicke and Kirk Cameron. But she is a
stunning blonde who could be a "Lindsay Wagner" type if she's not
careful. Here's hoping she doesn't.
Judith Light
"Angela" on "Who's The Boss". Lets Tony Danza and "Mona" steal
the show too often but she can stun you. Needs to just jump
Danza's bones once and be done with it. Otherwise, the "tease"
label might stick.
Alyssa Milano
Danza's daughter on "Who's The Boss". A superstar in the making.
Will be a top-drawer beauty by the mid-1990s. Her face was the
animator's model for Ariel, Disney's "Little Mermaid". Can swim
with the best of them.
Sabrina Lebeauf
The oldest daughter on The Cosby Show. Tough stuff.
Any more ???

Bob, B.A. was right on. There is not a more beautiful face to grace
the television set in 20 years than Jaclyn Smith. And the rest of the
package is nothing to complain about.
As for Jamie Lee, I've long been an admirer. Her cleavage factor in
"Wanda" was entirely off the scale! I find her looking a little bit
plain these days as she ages (gracefully). But if you really went to
get to know Jamie Lee Curtis, you just gotta see the movie she was in
with John Revolting, where he was a Rolling Stone reporter and she was
an aerobics instructor par excellance. Don't remember the title, but
it's not a bad movie and Jamie Lee excels.
Two others that I want to add are Victoria Jackson on Saturday Night

The other is on a show that I've never watched more than 5 minutes of

the television set in 20 years than Jaclyn Smith. And the rest of the
package is nothing to complain about.
Hey, Jaclyn Smith is *not*, repeat *NOT*, chopped liver. Her "salad
days" are behind her, that's all I meant to say.
"Wanda" was a riot. I loved the scenes with her and John Cleese.
Cleese might just be the world's funniest man and it was a joy to watch
his face and his expressions as Jamie Lee worked her charms. I think
her "Plain Jane" look right now is a result of the character she's
playing on "Anything But Love". No reason to expect her to keep
this up long-term.
The movie with Travolta, an under-rated actor who's picked some really
bogus roles to work with, was called "Perfect". The critics hated it
but Jamie Lee's aerobics classes were worth the price of admission.
There was one class where Travolta, the reporter, was sweating along
with the rest of the "students" and Jamie Lee, the teacher, was up on
the podium looking right at him doing all kinds of ummm, well, never
mind, you get the idea. Whew, hot in here all of a sudden ...
Two others that I want to add are Victoria Jackson on Saturday Night
Live. Yeah, a bit of an airhead, but so soft and cushiony looking.
Victoria Jackson is the real thing. No doubt. The dumb blonde thing
is an act. She can hit, hit for power, and has speed on the base
paths.
And Dan, "soft and cushiony" ??? Careful there, guy, that's a little
too close to symptoms of "Alan Alda Disorder". Get a little more
"ooomph" in your descriptions of these babes. It's the '90s, man,
time for us guys to toss the quiche out the window. Hey, I saw it in

I've often sat through many insipid episodes just to catch a glimpse

Victoria Jackson also gets a big vote from me too.
Another to look for is Courtney Thorne-Smith. She played Kusacks girlfriend

And, of course, there's also (Corbin Bernsen) Arnold Becker's "stable"

Victor Sifuentes doesn't spend too many nights alone, either.
Definite high marks for quantity *and* quality on that show ...

only the winners that show up? Like they know in advance who's
going to win? "What? they want me to attend an' I ain't gettin

Also the awards always seem to go to whoever is the hottest at the
time, not who is the best, simply for ratings purposes. Dontcha
think if the New Kids were available that evening, they "somehow"
would have ended up with all kinds of awards.
I didn't stay up for the whole thing, but from what I saw, Paula

I respect your opinion dan'l, but I disagree 100%. I think her
appearance has a purpose- to draw more attention to herself. She could
be a very attractive woman with a nice 'do, but she'd just be another
pretty face with a decent voice. Now, she's noticed because of the
outrageous look first, and a decent voice second. And that's just the
bull that she says she's "not compromising". I think she's riding the

somewhat pleasant in appearance, to accentuate their primary talent.
To purposely ruin your appearance, especially to make a "statement",
makes no sense at all.
Take a Tom Selleck or a Mel Gibson, for example. They're great actors,
and they're appearances have a great deal to do with their popularity,
which undoubtedly has helped their acting careers. Look at Normie on
Cheers. Do you think he'd still be on the show and doing beer

| Dan'l,
Since your reply of a few back seemed to be directed at me, let
me tell ya that the politics of Jesse Helms are further away from
mine than Pluto is from Seattle. As for Sinead, I bought her first
album before it was played - however, I didn't buy her latest cuz
I think it sips.
As for MTV - I think it has been BAD for music - they have not moved
music anywhere - they still cater to the top 40 and the BIG artists.
And, they've made it clear that in order to be sucessful ya gotta
look good on camera, and ya gotta hope the video is a sucess - not
the music.
If a performer sell discs, makes money, and hopefully dresses funny/has
some sort of cause/looks funny, then that almost guarentees success
on MTV.
And MTV's target audience is the lucrative 12-18 year old market.

Sorry folks, but I'm an old school musician. If you can't cut the licks
with your ax live you ain't worth sh_t. Emerson Lake and Palmer
stretched my feeling quite a bit with some of their music, and
Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody stretched it to the limit ( as much as I
enjoyed those groups).
Nowadays you have these lip sync wonders with a carefully created

Personal appearance....Bah..It's the music that counts...

overzealous about two things I'm very passionate about, music and
fashion. I guess I can now be in a league with Hal Whitehead when it
comes to unnecessary overzealousness. :-)
All I was trying to say was to discount a singer because of their looks
makes you miss out on so much. You said yourself that the song
intrigued you, but when you saw her you developed a distaste
for the song. That just doesn't make sense to me, but to each his own.
FWIW, I don't like Springstein, but it's because I think he can't sing,
not because he's ugly. Isn't there a difference in the two scenarios?
I'm even confusing myself.
Oh well, I know what I like. And you know what you like. And that's

I'm not a 14-year old, but I play one in here.
I usually switch to MTV and VH1 between commercials of whatever
else I'm watching. When these stations first came out, I watched
them a helluva lot more than I do now. I found out just how fast
you can get sick of a song when viewing a video as compared to
listening to the radio alone.
My folks got me to appreciate the Big Bands, and my wife got me
interested in the classics, and I just assimilated that into the
regular white boy stuff I grew up with. I've never liked C & W
because nobody I knew listened to it, and I never learned what it
was about (but I think Infidelity, Dee-vorce, and Trucks about covers
it 8^)). I don't care for Rap, but my 14-year old does, and by
watching at least a little bit of it, there's one more thing we
can talk about.
I thought Christina Applegate looked a little puffy in the face

If you like alternative music then you should recognize that most of my
p_names are lyrics from alternative songs. Except for the one I'm
sporting now. Well kinda.
Last night my favorite local (Johnson City, Tennessee) played their
final gig before calling it quits for a while. Brian and the
Nightmares was your average band that played: rockabilly blues country
rock classic surf punk music. Quite a combination.
One fun song they had was about a guy who used his dead girlfriend as a
surfboard. It was called "She's a Surfboard Now." Thus, today's
p_name. Then they'd follow that with some Stevie Ray or Guthrie cover.
Followed by an "I am a Rock" or "These Boots" rockabilly/blues cover.
That's about as versatile as they come.
Hats off to Brian and the Nightmares.
And if anyone down Houston way gets a chance, go see Brian Relleva in
the near future, do so. He's the lead singer who's going out on his
own. Why Houston, I don't know.
Later.

re C&W....
As probably the only person in the world who has a thing for
C&W *and* Heavy Metal, I can comment.
Like other musical forms these days, C&W has been vastly influenced
by music outside the normal domain of CW. Just as there
are many forms of jazz, so are there many forms of CW.
True, there's "classic" stuff by Hank Williams Sr, which I really
love, but most of today's stuff is influenced by pop and rock.
Groups like Alabama and Canyon blend traditional southern harmony
with up tempo stuff. Harmonies have always fascinated me, from
barbershop quartet stuff to the Grateful Dead. CW is *full*
of harmonies...groups like the Kentucky Headhunters,
Wild Rose (not to be confused with Hartfords womens' rugby team ;^))
and Sawyer Brown all fuse more or less traditional harmonies with
other influences.
True, subject matter is often about life's troubles and such, but
so is 99% of the blues.
And look at the crossover popularity of Hank Jr's parody of his
own "All My Rowdy Friends" which is used to open MNF....
Give country a listen sometime. Personally, I can do without
all the old twangy Tammy Wynette stuff, but Dwight Yoakam,
Clint Black, Skip Ewing, Canyon, Alabama all can give you something
easy to listen to that makes you feel good.
Would I use C&W to psyche up for a game, or to go lift weights? Nah.
For that I use Dio's Last in Line or Led Zep's Immigrant Song....

| 'Saw,
I grew up on the Jersey Shore less than 20 miles away from Asbury Park
and Freehold. I was a freshman in high school in the spring of 1973
when I bought "Greetings" on a 8-track cassette. Played it to death.
Bruce was a local hero of the highest order.
When "The Wild, The Innocent, and The E Street Shuffle" came out, I
bought it on vinyl. Still my favorite Bruce album. Each and every
single song is a classic.
"Born To Run" came out in 1976 when I went away to school. Suddenly,
Bruce was everywhere. And since I was no longer at the Shore,
everybody treated him like he was the "new" king. Which he *was* to
everybody outside Jersey. I really hated all the hype that people
went through. "Born To Run" was the *only* song they played and it got
very tiresome.
So, I cooled off on him. I didn't believe he had sold out to the
masses. I just didn't want to get caught up in all the "nouveau chic"
over a guy from Jersey that I had been listening to for more than 4
years (at that time).
Then "Darkness" and "The River" came out and I bought 'em like a good
soldier. Some classics, some ordinaries. 100% Bruce so I was pleased.
Then he put out "Nebraska" in 1982 and I was back in swing full-time.
What a great album. Stark and deadly serious. Filled with incredible
images in a sparse, no-nonsense package.
Then back down again with "Born In The USA". Again the mass hype went
into orbit. I remember one guy I knew who insisted that "USA" was his
best effort since "The River". Blech. And I really lost it when
Ronald Reagan completely missed the bitterness in "USA" and used the
title as a campaign slogan.
"Tunnel Of Love" was good, not great. And the Live album was alright,
too. Of course, you just cannot capture a Bruce concert on a
recording. In that respect, it was a disappointment but an expected
one.
Now he's broken up The E Street Band so I don't know what his future
holds. The marriage thing and his new baby I kinda ignore. Tabloid
stuff.
My favorite Bruce song is "Incident On 57th Street" from the "The Wild,
The Innocent ..."

I don't believe that happens. If it were true, guys like Joe Satriani,
Eric Johnson, Larry Carlton, Phil Keaggy, Michael Hedges, and even the
late Stevie Ray Vaughan would be household names. People that go out
of their way to see/hear the above guitar players are fellow musicians.
Someone once posted a funny anecdote from a Larry Carlton concert in
GUITAR notes once. LC asked for a show of hands for all the guitar
players in the crowd and 60% raised their hands. He then asked, "How
many play the guitar or came with a guitarist?" Then 95% raised their
hands. LC then says, "What are the rest of you?" The guy that posted
the story was in the front row and said, "Keyboard players!" LC then
replied, "That's what I thought!"

I got to say that, in all honesty, I could care less how an artist

Sinead's case, I don't care for her music (what I've heard of it). She
could look as hot as Annie Wilson of Heart, but I still wouldn't like
her music any better. And, because she makes herself look ugly, it
doesn't make me dislike her music any more. But, I still maintain
that, as much as Madonna flings this sexy look to gain popularity, so
does Sinead make herself look outrageously ugly (the opposite effect).
I've read that she looks like this on purpose so people would like her
for her music only. That's what I question........

Today is my last chance. I'll do my best, sir.

| Bon Jovi is alright, in my book.
I seldom listen to lyrics.. just the music.
Also like some of the stuff by Poison, Led Zeppelin, G & R, and Eddie
Van Halen.
Metallica sucks, big time.
