7.16spools in a street machine?BSS::BORENFri Jan 24 1997 10:0617

    spools on the street...........

    I'm building (well it's almost completed) a street machine to use
    for the occasional trip around town and will act as a weekend warrior
    at the strip (foot brake class). Over time I've ended up with a
    Strange spool (lost two posi units) with Mosher axles.

    I'm currently babying this thing on corners (tire skip)but wondered if
    anyone has ran a spool for any length of time on the street and how
    well it'll hold up to the cornering problems? I know a posi would be
    better for the street, but the spool holds up better at the track :^)
    I've already blown two posi units.

       Yes...in my Willys Americar. I ran out of money after putting in the
    455 buick and spending a small fortune getting it to cool. I welded the
    spider gears in the differential for added traction but you could not
    drive it an even damp roads. Getting around corners was pure hell.
    I finally got put on to someone who sold me a ford 9" rear. that fixed
    the drivability problems.

7.18Probably had junk unitsVMSNET::M_MACIOLEKFour54 Camaro/Only way to flyFri Jan 24 1997 15:4417
    Maybe yer using the wrong parts. A 12 bolt posi is pretty strong,
    but it's heavier than a ford 9 inch. a 12 bolt is also more
    expensive to build than a ford.

    A posi unit you may want to look into is the Moroso Brute strength
    deal. That'll give you posi, and (hopefully) longevity.

    The fact that you lost 2 posi units wouldn't freak me out. A 10 bolt
    will back up nearly 500 hp, a 12 bolt even more. A worn out 10 bolt
    replaced with another worn out 10 bolt from the junk yard wouldn't
    solve the problem.

    The other thing is what specifically broke, and why? (overheating?)
    try and hook up a cooler, do everything you can do to keep the unit
    cool, and reduce friction (synthetic fluid?)

    re: Spools.... thanks for the info

    I knew it'd be tricky...but back at the time..I thought about going
    pure strip...and well - I changed my mind so the spool is a bit radical
    for the street.  Seems like my best bet is going back to a posi :^}
7.21Keep it in the garageVMSNET::M_MACIOLEKFour54 Camaro/Only way to flyMon Jan 27 1997 14:289
    I'd think of the idea of safety too. Your car goes like hell in a
    straight line, but just don't try and turn. Out on the street you
    have all sorts of yahoos and morons you have to dodge. I KNOW this will
    never happen, but if some moron borrows or steals your car, or you sell
    it... the first time they try and go around a corner, they'll have
    problems.
