Mine was an Ang-u-la(sp) or an English Ford, three door, green/aqua. It
was a trip! It was a 1963, and when the world was trying to do karata
chops with their fingers, watching cheap spy flicks, and sporting
trench coats. This cheap car was right in there... someplace... between
the over sized american chev's and the pickup trucks of my high school
    days.

Western Auto had bullet hole decals and my winds had lost of em on to
the point where I was pulled over by the local sheriff and frisked for
guns!:) When he found my .007 special under the front seat, I thought
there was a heart attack shortly to follow! Then there was a sigh of
releaf when he found out it was a plastic toy. I cought hell for it esp
from my folks. The tan London fog still hangs in the closet of
    yester year.

I was once chased by some of the locals who were just playing. I had a
great laugh on them when we went down a back road, narrow, dirt. And I
was able to spin the little car around in a spot that made them do at
    least a 21 point turn.:)

26.45Ford Anglia ?NETCAD::HENDERSONFri Feb 28 1997 12:2117
Was that an English Ford ANGLIA by any chance ? That was the first car
I ever owned ( followed by 4 more in my teens and early twenties ). In
high school my math teacher showed up one day all upset, something had
broken in his anglia's steering, he'd gone off the road, through a
fence, and ended up on the 18th green at the local country club. He
said "someone make me an offer for that car, I've had it". So, I stick
up my hand and offer 10 pounds ( $20 at the time) . He says "done, its
yours". Definately a cheap car, but over time I learned to do just
about every job imaginable on them, engine rebuild, tranny rebuild,
you name it...those were the days...

Never saw an Anglia with other that 2 doors. Distinctive feature, the
rear window sloped such that the bottom of the window was further
forward that the top. Didn't get rain drops on it, but looked weird.

Chevy Vega station wagon. Got about 50 miles to the quart.

I watched it get totaled from about 50 feet away; it was parked and a guy trying
to evade the cops in full-sized half ton pickup lost it and smashed into
it/drove over it. The squealing tires got my attention so I was watching as he
came around a corner, the rear end washed out and he plowed into the left front
quarter panel of the Vega at a medium speed...

Getting blue book for it from the guy's insurance company was a blessing!

.45 Yes. It was:) Execpt this sucker was roaming the back roads of New
Hampshire in New England vs roaming the roads in the UK or such.:) And
its size was dwarfed by the very large chevs and and such of many of
the locals high school kids who felt that bigger was better. Faster was
better too. This thing barly reached 65 mph. For the kinda driving I
was doing at the time on Rt 125, 155, etc in the southern NH area. This
was more than enough horse power.

The only other car this was bigger, was the Fiat sumthin that had a rag
top and a rear engine. VW Beatles were bigger than this Anglia!:)

>          <<< Note 26.47 by MKOTS3::RAUH "I survived the Cruel Spa" >>>

I had a '59 Anglia, steering wheel on left side. Yukky pea green. Could not
go fast enough to win a drag race against a quadraplegic on a tricycle.

Strange vehicle.

Shift rod was so long you ground your knuckles on the dashboard grill.

Didn't have a choke, either. It had this strangish gas injector assembly that
was maddengly easy to flood. You could look down the carb throat and see the
puddle sloshing around.

Seats were not on sliders, the whole seat just pivoted up and forward.

Yup, I remember that piece of junque.
26.49MKOTS3::RAUHI survived the Cruel SpaFri Feb 28 1997 18:0020
I had the choke, had this wierd under the dash board tray. The
electrical was a reversed 6 volt system. So, when you added an american
radio, the unit had to be isolated from ground as the US stuff is. So,
a wire from ground/chassis would to to what we would tie the hot side
to, and vis versa. I remember this because I wanted to install a radio
and smoked a couple of em to get the thing to work proper.:)

Funny, I got great gas mileage, great preformance on the back roads of
New Hampshire where you cannot go real fast. But, forget the real
highways like 495, rt 3, etc. I would get the doors sucked off by
anything that was heavier, faster, etc. Sides... I liked those back
    roads anyhow.;)

Could loose anyone who was stupid enough to horras me. Another time I
lost some hotdog just by taking a right had turn into field during a
dence fog.:) Had to know the field cause if you don't you could rip off
any and all that hangs under the car. :) SEcet Agggent man! SecretAgent
man! The've give you a number and taken way your name.:) (Johnny
    Rivers)

Anglias made good drag cars. I saw a few hopped up with a V-8/4-speed.
They looked really cool with the fat tires, side exhaust, wild paint.etc.

yep, mine was a corvair. a note i just read in the sales string just reminded
me of it,,, bought it from my next door neighbor. $50 me thinks.
he had it sitting in a garage for some time and the engine froze up.
he tried all kinds of things in the crankcase to try to eat out the rust
that was binding things up, but no go. i dropped the engine and rebuilt it.
flat 6 cyl. fun engine to work on ;-) my mother still kids me about it
being spread out on the utility room floor.

ah, those were the days !!

neet thing about the corvair is the gas heater that came with it. The
bloody soles of your shoes would melt off!

    >neet thing about the corvair is the gas heater that came with it.

humm, gas heater ?? the ONLY heat i remember were the type like VW's,
where a fan was used to force the heat off the headers. problem in BOTH
those cars, was when the pushrod tubes leaked oil in the chambers,
    and,,,

OH that smell was a drag...

26.55Gas heater ad-onMILKWY::JACQUESThu Mar 13 1997 12:528
I knew a guy with an early 60's Corvair that had a gas heater.
I recall it was an after-market ad-on and it worked great. The
car was hot by the time he got to the bottom of his driveway.

I believe the reason you don't see these things anymore is because
    of safety concerns.

the heat quickly.

Gas heaters? My '69 VW bug college car had no heat. I simply
froze to death. Close to graduation time from Northeastern, I simply
crashed it into a snowbank on Wigglesworth st. then smashed the
windshield soz I could rip the VIN off the dash. Then the car was the
    cities problem.

Sucha cruel dude! I had a 71 super with little or no heat. Despite that
down side, the car ran on for years. It was 12 years old when I traded
it in for a new SR-5 Toyota pickup truck.
26.60SternoWMOIS::FERRARI_GFri Mar 14 1997 12:365
After seeing these notes, I had to write....I remember my Dad had a
late sixties/early seventies Karmann Ghia convertible. Those cold
winter mornings, I remember his heating system...a can of Sterno on
    the dash.

That was the yuck about VW owners. You can tell when the owner is
freezing. He is smiling. Or whats the loudest thing in a VW, other than
the motor? The chattering teeth of the owner.:) I know, I owned a
    couple.:) A 59 and a 71.
