| The only chance I had to catch Green Bay lately was their loss to Tampa
Bay when they couldn't get anything going. Do they use Chmura and
Jackson at the same time or do they rotate them into the game. Either
way those two could keep Dallas honest.
Unfortunately Dallas is relatively healthy and psychologically ready.
Ironically it doesn't even look like overconfidence will be a factor.
I'd say only an injury to Jones or someone in the middle can keep Green
Bay in this.
Is there a line on Favre finishing the game on two feet (or Aikman)?

Packer bandwagoneering kinda went too far for me. They were an
attractive candidate, but you reach a point of overload when there
are just too many people piling on. I was rooting for them, though.
The Colts were the "best" bandwagon underdog candidate this year,
I think.
On a related note, if you look around the stores, there's quite a
bit of Packer merchandise out there. They've gotten popular (again,
this can be dangerous, to the sensibilities of the real fans). But
I've looked around, and it's damned hard to find Steeler anything,
anymore. You can, but it's hit or miss. The glorious history is
too far in the past for the current crop of kids to know or care.
I have come across some stuff but can't even find a kids' Steeler
T-shirt in the Nashua area, for example. And most places that have
a zillion different caps don't have Steelers' ones, or very few.
If we're looking for NFL-sponsored conspiracies, maybe the NFL sees
that the market for Cowboys' merchandise is saturated, and can
capitalize on a large business opportunity with the Steelers.
They've got one of the popular colors, for one thing, and unlike
some of the faux uniform redesigns (Falcons), always have.

JoeH, call your Mayor's office and tell him to accept a deal with the
city getting the rights to the colors and the name Cleveland Browns.
He's bullsh*tin' about "getting it all", whatever that means. Do Browns
fans really want anything to do with Modell anymore ? I doubt it.
The coaches and players change so often in pro sports, just get the
name and unis and get on with your lives.

Oh, I'll be rooting for the Steelers; the thing is, I won't care enough
to actually watch the game, or anything like that.
Re: JoeG
I _believe_ White's hope is that they can essentially force Modell to
sell the team. There's a _lot_ of pressure on Modell now; if the
Browns are forced to play in Cleveland, they'll be losing money hand
over fist...

| Don't be fooled that merchandise availability can function as an indicator
of fanaticism for any given team.
People are buying stuff because of color and style (and yes, true, partly
because a team may be hot).
The Whalers changed their uniforms a few years back because studies had shown
that the puke green and blue they used were NOT a marketable combination.
The Mighty Ducks and Sharks stuff were huge around here not so long ago, and now
aren't that evident in supply....

Charles was fined heavy, and suspended for a game for the illegal hit.
Jim was out the rest of the season. That is when Ditka brought in Doug

How 'bout dem Cheese-Boys? I kinda hoped they would murder the
Pasties the way the Broncos did, but this was quite sufficient. The
game was a little iffy earlier-on, but a little divine intervention
made sure that things went the way they should.
Adios to ya, fellas. The time has come for the Digital chapter

Yep, that's true.
I've shared some e-mails with Tony over the past couple of weeks, and he lives
and dies with the Pack like I live and die with the Giants.
When the Giants won their first Super Bowl is was after a thirty year drought.
I know full well what Tony is feeling this morning 8^)

Mostly the latter 'Saw. Bldg 19 has become a new source for cheap
books and the Frank Gifford story is among them for a couple bucks.
The selling point is supposed to be mnf and Kathy Lee but for me the
Giants teams of 1956-1963 was the reason for reading.
Funny account of Frank getting treated by the "Cocaine Doctor" who
among many famous clients counted General Patton. And the Hollywood
Marijuana parties of the 40s and early 50s. All this before political
correctness.

| It was mostly dying with the Giants.
As I said, I started watching football and immediately gravitated to the
Packers (because I thought they were cool) and the Giants (they were on a lot).
There was hardly a Sunday afternoon in our household that didn't hear the
strains of "Confidence" as the CBS broadcast opened and I watched as much as I
could.
I'll never forget the season that the Giants had a chance to make the playoffs
heading into their last game against the Rams. They had started the season 0-3
and then reeled of six straight wins against the Eagleles, Paths, Cards, Jets,
Cowboys, and 'Skins. Into the final game they were 9-4, and we were SO
excited. We watched them get annihilated 31-3 by the Rams on the final day,
and they lost the playoff spot on tiebreakers.
It was tough. And it was just a harbinger of things to come as we sat through
the lousy teams of the 70s and then the early 80s before George Young came
along and drafted Sims and Taylor, and then picked Parcells.
Packers were just as bad some of those years, too.

259.224 | Thanks! | YIELD::BARBIERI | | Tue Jan 28 1997 15:51 | 48 |
| Say thanks a million Mike and 'Saw!!
I truly am content for the rest of my life in so far as sports
fannage goes. I was nine years old when the Packers last won,
but that is kind of young. I remember that I watched some games,
but not all of them. I remember Travis Williams breaking 2 TD's
against the Browns (kickoff returns) that year (score was something
like 55-7) as well as an unusual night game against the Cardinals
and very close regular season losses against the Colts and Rams
who both finished the season 11-1-2.
I remember going Christmas shopping with my ma while the mighty
Rams were playing the Pack. The game wasn't on TV (in Milwaukee?).
I didn't understand. The Pack won 28-7. And of course I did watch
the Ice-Bowl game.
I dedicated myself to watch every Packer game in '68 and I was the
youngest kid in my neighborhood to watch all the games. "Tony,
let's go out and play football?" "No, I gotta watch the Pack!"
I even drove with my dad to Rubicon at my great aunt's house to
see the games that were played in Milwaukee and thus blacked out
there.
In '68 I remember the 2nd game was blacked out as it was in Milw.
They lost to the Vikings 19-7. Losing was inconceivable to me as
I went in my bedroom and cried.
So, from the time I really started watching them ('68), its been
a long haul.
And there were some dreary years. I remember the year the Pack
opened the season losing to the Lions 40-0. Greg Landry, the
Lions QB, had an 80 yard run from scrimmage (!!).
True, the Bucks did win in '71, but that's not the same as the
Pack and that was also a long time ago (wow, two years removed
from Jabbar being at UCLA).
Anyway, I really am content and I think I am for life. If they
never win again, I'll be happy. They did it while I still have
some mental powers! Can analyze things/really take it in. In
'67, I was pretty young.
So, thanks again Mike and 'Saw. I really appreciate it.
Tony

Being the same age (give or take a year) we have to stick together. Besides, I

I disagree. Little ups like your team winning a championship are similar to
catching a beautiful sunset, finishing a good book where the very last line is
the most powerful of all, or spying a doe and fawn at the edge of a wood at
dawn.
They don't mean a lot in themselves, but somehow they enrich your life.
JMHO though ;^)

| Tony,
I saw the rumor/report but I haven't seen it confirmed yet.
The only big ones I've seen are Chad Brown getting lost in Seattle and
Jeff George signing for gazillions with the Raiders who had to dump their
whole team to make room under the cap.

If the Pack loses Brown, with the ends getting that much older,
well, things look a lot less rosy for the future.

| I don't think it was all that coincidental that the Packers stepped up to
the nexted level when they Sterling left.
From all accounts he was a bigger pain in the ass than Andre Rison ever
was. Supposedly, Favre went to the powers that be and told 'em that they
din't need ol' Sterling as long as Brooks was around.

Enjoy it while you can. Free agency and salary cap will take it's toll

not the team.

| Good one Mike!
I'm not going to guarantee they would have won, but I truly
think they would have been favored in the postseason at
Lambeau.
When I meant exagerrating, I meant that Favre couldn't throw
to any one of all of them at one time. I did suggest this
might be the best complete package of receivers of all time.
Perhaps the Raiders though with Branch/Biletnekoff/can't think
of the TE.
For a whole package, this is awfully good.

Then again, they had Bradshaw hurling the ball.
Who was that tight end? Where is Billl Long?
Redskins had some pretty good passing arrays, Fouts to Kelvin Winslow
et co, Marino's gang, Montana to Rice...

| Oh, I definitely thought of the Redskins trio. Jurgenson to
Charley Taylor, Bobby Mitchell, and Jerry Smith. But, I don't
think Smith was quite up there with other TE's. For a three
set, I think that Raider one was right up there. 49'ers with
Rice/Taylor/Frank (I think)/Craig/Rathman was pretty awesome.

For some of the heydays it was Bennie Cunningham from Clemson.

Tony, I think you're let the Pack winning the SB in the
watered down NFL go to your head. They don't have the
best receiving corps in history. It might not even be
the best in the league *now*. It wasn't your receiving
corps that won the SB. It was a washed-up receiver but
kick returner par excellence that did the Patsies in.
The vintage 49ers, this recent Cowboys dynasty, the
pass happy Chargers teams and the list goes on and on
of teams that have better receiving corps than the Pack.
They probably don't even crack the top twenty all-time.
There ain't a future HoFer in that receiving corps.

| Thats right. It was Jackie Smith who played for the Cardinals
and the Cowboys.
Jerry Smith was a TE for the Redskins. He was 4th in receptions
the year the Redskins held 1 (Taylor), 2 (Mitchell), and 3 (Smith).
By the way, he's the 1st professional athlete I know of who died
of AIDS.
Tommy...oh, I'm not really trying to trumpet the Packers. I realize
no *individual* receiver cracks any top even 30 list, but the
depth is pretty extraordinary. Brooks/Rison/Freeman/Beebe and
Chmur/Jackson is an extremely deep set of receivers.

Some good receivers backed up by a bunch of castoffs. The Patsies
starters are as good as Green Bay's.
