193.0. "Post Concussion Syndrome" by AIMTEC::MORABITO_P (Hotlanta Rocks) Sun Oct 30 1994 23:00

The new buzz phrase in the NFL this year is "Post Concussion Syndrome".
It's what caused Jet's receiver Al Toon to retire, running back Merrill
Hoge retired a couple of weeks ago. Now the league is looking at altering the
rules to protect the quarterback even more. The point here is, the
forementioned duo are not quarterbacks. Troy Aikman has sustained six
concussions in his realitively brief career. The league is now taking action
because a quarterback has the problem.

Are today's players getting too strong? Is this from Artificial Turf?

In the paper today they tell how Buddy Ryan teaches his players to leave the
ground and "Make your body a missile". Can't wait to see the flags flying
when Arizona plays Dallas again.

Sun Devil Stadium doesn't have artificial turf, but Troy did bounce a
    few times.

Yeah, maybe they'll finally start calling Irvin for all that pushing
off he does in the secondary.

Re: -1

I am not Dallas Cowboy fan...my base note is about a real serious problem
in the NFL. Now being in the NFC East, your Arizona Cards are going to play
at least two games on turf. I haven't a clue which AFC division they are
going up against this year, but they have turf over there.

But don't worry, in Buddy "You've gotta a winner in town" Ryan, 3-5, should be
2-6, you got a coach that will try to win at any cost. If the price is
giving the opposing team permanent brain damage to win a game, then so be
it. Bounty's on QBs and other players is sick.

All your team needs is a new owner, coach, and quarterback. Good kicker
though.

And by the way, I am not a Falcon fan either.

...and I'm not a Cards' fan either so what's your point?

    Mike...
Perhaps you cannot read between the lines. Let me try to help you.
The game is physical enough without anyone putting a bounty out on
opposing players. Buddy has a tough enough defense without being
dirty. Maybe the hit on Aikman was within the rules but it was
    very close.

There haven't been any bounties by the Cards while Buddy's been here.

I read a recent Sports Illustrated article on how Al Toon and others are
getting along. This is serious stuff people. It was one of the most
depressing things I have read in a while...Actually put it down, couldn't
finish it. Toon sometimes gets lost going home, is very cranky and moody.
And it is only going to get worse. I know NFLers make a lot of bucks, but
it can't be worth becoming a vegetable. A hit with the intent to injure
should be dealt with by the incompentent officicals. The officiating was
so hideous in the S.D. - Miami contest that it is clear these idiots don't
know what they are doing. Forget about concussions, what about all the
diving at the knees that goes on? What can be done? It hasn't happened
to everybody's favorite team, but eventually it will.
