177.1 | Eastern Regional action... | NACAD::MORGAN | | Thu Aug 11 1994 10:23 | 11 |
| Well, I must have gotten some bad info, because Middleboro, Ma. did in
fact play yesterday, beating Oakland, Md. 18-6! In other Eastern
Regional action:
Bangor, Me. 12 Salem, N.H. 3
Milburn-Short Hills, N.J. 6 Brattleboro, Vt. 3
Orchard Park, N.Y. 3 Bear, Del. 1
Like I said previously, Middleboro, Ma. is a powerhouse.

North Scottsdale LL (where I live) is on to San Bernadino and the
Western US Finals. Don't know anyone on the team, don't know that I've
ever seen anyone on the team, so in the finest JoJ tradition:
Congrats!

From Metro West, take 495 south. It's about half way between Route 24
and the Bourn Bridge (Cape Cod). Route 495 may be called state route 25
at that point.
From Plymouth take 44 west about 10 miles.

That's the first loss for Mass. They had won on Friday 12-0. One of

177.10 | Two wins away from the Series... | NACAD::MORGAN | | Wed Aug 17 1994 10:13 | 18 |
| Middleboro won yesterday 9-4 over Oakland, Md. They now must beat
Millburn-Short Hills, N.J. today and tomorrow to win the East
Regionals and advance to the Little League World Series next week.
Toby Upton hit a grand slam in the first inning for Oakland.
Unfortunatley for them, it was their last hit. Brandon Soule hit a two
run blast in the third to key a four run rally. Kevin Brower (one of
the twin studs) had a two-out run scoring double in the fourth and a
two-run homer in the sixth.
I noticed a different name of a pitcher who got the win in relief, Joe
Moles. This would mean that the twin brothers that normally alternate
between pitching and short will probably pitch today and tomorrow. The
one that started yesterday wouldn't be able to pitch today, but if he
pitched three innings or less yesterday, can pitch tomorrow (only up to
6 innings / week though).

had two dingers. They're supposed to play today at 2:00, but I'd
imagine it's raining like hell in Connecticut too, so they'll most
likely play tomorrow.

Sun's trying awfully hard to come out, not raining now.

| Big article in yesterday's Hartford Courant about the Trumbull champs
5 years later. It was interesting. In the intervening years, the two
smallest kids on the team put on 85 and 90 pounds respectively, and have
gotten quite tall.
The only one who'll probably be a professional athlete is Chris Drury, the
pitcher, who's been drafted by the Quebec Nordiques.
Some of the others don't play baseball any more, some do.
It was a great article......

| Middleboro lost to Calif. yesterday, 6-4. They play a team from
Minnesota today, and although their chances of advancing are very
remote, it is still possible.
A kid from Venezuela struck out the first 12 Taiwanese batters he faced
yesterday, and ended up with 15 strikeouts (out of a possible 18 outs)!
Considering he wasn't exactly facing chopped liver, this is an amazing
feat.

three full innings.
It was 2-0, but Mass scored a run in the top of the 3rd, loaded the bases
and then this big tall lanky kid hit a grand slam.
We were watching in this pizza place and when the kid hit the slam a bunch
of folks jumped up from their seats! Who says little league ain't fun.

| Middleboro won 11-5, which eliminated Minnesota. To advance to the
American Final, Virginia must beat California and score at least six
runs doing it. Here's how the standings wil look if Virginia wins:
Virginia 3-0
Middleboro 1-2
Minnesota 1-2
California 1-2
First tiebreaker is head to head - each team is 1-1 against the other
two. Second tiebreaker is fewest runs allowed. That's why Minnesota
is already out. They allowed 17, and Middleboro has allowed 13.
California has allowed 8 runs in their first two games, so that's why
Virginia needs to score at least 6.

Northbridge, Ca. 4-3. The kid that pitched for Venezuela was throwing
77 mph from 46 feet away. A two hour rain delay seemed to have an
effect on both pitchers, but there's nothing you can do about it.

| Slight correction to the preceding: the US rep was from Northridge (no 'b'),
which (among other things) was the epicenter of the recent Los Angeles
earthquake. I understand that a couple of the kids on the team still
are not back into their homes. Making it to the final is quite an
accomplishment.
Good to see a Latin American rep interrupt the Far East's dominance (amazing
what happens when you enforce the rules!).
Wish I could have seen it.

In the meantime the kids from Middleboro met with Mass.
Governor Weld in a little statehouse ceremony. Seems the
state is developing quite an affinity for also-rans like
the kids from Middleboro and Nancy Kerrigan. Weld should
have snubbed the little brats and told them that at a time
when New England baseball fans were depressed because of
the strike, they could have provided a little light but in-
stead they let themselves and a whole six state region down.
You don't deserve a ceremony. Beat it.
BTW - I tuned in to watch the LLWS final but because of the rain
delay I only managed to catch a little bit of the Trumbull
replay. Pretty tacky of the fans to be chanting "USA! USA!"
Is that what Little League is all about? Us and them? Later
on I asked someone who won the 1994 game and the reply was,
"We lost." We, of course, being the kids from Northridge, Ca.
"We." Us and them.

That little 2nd baseman for Texas made one helluva play yesterday in

shortstop look very strong in the field.
Hopefully, we'll see a good game anyway.
