Mildly amusing that the Yankees have now gone the 4th longest of 28 teams
in MLB without winning so much as one division title. With their
resources that's taken some work. And yet I keep hearing from the likes

favorite to win it all. At least we Red Sox fans are realistic about
our team's futility...

Chappy, if you knew the first thing about Sox fans, you'd know that we
don't celebrate anything about 1967, 1975 or 1986. However, I will

At this very moment, no (although as I've said in the Yankee note I
think that NY's impending "resurgence" is starting to look more and
more like that check lost in the mail-- and so far this winter they've
done nothing but spin their wheels). But if the Sox don't blow it
and do indeed land one of the brightest minds in baseball in Dan
Duquette, and if Trot Nixon doesn't blow out his arm in a barroom
brawl, who knows, in a couple of years that window of opportunity
may just yet open again as the Yankees' slams shut. The Sox can get
smarter but George'll always be ugly...

No Holtzin' going on there. The AL East is shaping up to be one of the
toughest in baseball. As much as it pains me to say it, the Yanks have
been steadily improving. Toronto is the defending World Champ. The
O's have been improving. Get Detroit some pitching to go along with
that potent offense and look out.
And we all know that if Jeff Russell hadn't hurt himself at the end of
last season, and if Roger Clemens was 3/4 of his usual self, we'd be
looking at a Champeenship in Beantown. Those guys will be back,
they've signed superstar free agent Dave Valle, and Mo Vaughn will be

Absolutely. That's what I meant about being realistic; it don't pay to
be otherwise if you're a Sox fan. Still, I'll take this faint hope as
opposed to the "Donbo 199* MVP, WS champ!" rantings of a deluded Yankee

The Sox aren't going to do Jack, and I've got more of a chance of taking
Tonya Harding's Spot on the Limp-Pic team than the Sox do of winning a
pennant this year. NY's only competition is Torawna (eh), and Buck

But the division as a whole is getting very old and is heading for a
crash. It may not happen this year, but when it does, whoever can
pull together the most remaining talent and get a bit of pitching may
be in good shape for 1995-1997. Many are saying that Cleveland made
this great decision to go to the Central and that might be true over
the very long haul, but going up against Chicago over the next 5
years doesn't look so painless.

I think in all seriousness he managed to make that team play hard and I
expect yankees to contend again.
But Jays are the class of baseball and with the current economics of
the game they will buy just enough pitching to support their superb
core and if they need a Cone etc for stretch will simply make that
move.
It is nice of Jays to fool around until the end of july to allow for
Sox to pretend-contend so they can draw their 2mil without having to
invest in true quality (ex. Bill Hatcher 150+ games in centerfield).
