Subject: Enduring Iditarod leaders turn race into a sprint
Date: Tue, 16 Mar 93 12:44:44 PST
WHITE MOUNTAIN, Alaska (UPI) -- Iditarod mushers, having covered more
than 1,000 miles of frozen Alaskan trails, were sprinting toward the
finish Tuesday, a margin of just minutes separating the two front-
runners.
Jeff King was running seven minutes ahead of DeeDee Jonrowe as the
two entered the final miles of the 1,161-mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race
from Anchorage to Nome.
King arrived at the next-to-last checkpoint at White Mountain, 55
miles from the final checkpoint at Safety and 77 miles from the finish
line, at 4:50 a.m. local time. Jonrowe came in at 4:57 a.m. Rick Mackey
was the third to arrive, about one hour back.
Four-time winner Susan Butcher was fourth, Tim Osmar fifth and
defending champion Martin Buser sixth, but they had yet to check in at
White Mountain.
There is a mandatory 12-hour rest stop at White Mountain. The layover
sets the stage for an expected three-way burst to the finish by King,
Jonrowe and Mackey.
But the weather could turn a leader into an also-ran. The Bering Sea
coast is notorious for sudden storms that could slow the leaders and
allow others to gain ground.
``Right now, it's clear and about 0 degrees,'' race spokesman Frank
Marineau said. ``But the weather calls for winds building to 20 to 30
mph with higher gusts and some snow. They're looking at a possible light
blizzard late today.
``If that develops, it definitely changes the complexity of the whole
situation.''
The race, begun March 6, was expected to end Wednesday. The winning
musher will receive $50,000 and a new pickup truck.
Buser last year set an Iditarod record by finishing the 1,049-mile
northern route in 10 days, 19 hours, 17 minutes, 15 seconds. On odd-
numbered years, mushers take the southern route covering an additional
112 miles.
King, of Denali Park, Alaska, won the halfway prize of $3,000 in
silver ingots Thursday, then traded the lead several times with other
mushers over the weekend before regaining it late Sunday.
On Monday when King left Elim, the 22nd checkpoint 123 miles from the
finish, he was two minutes ahead of Mackey and Jonrowe.
King, who finished sixth last year and 12th in 1991, has traded the
lead with Jonrowe four times since the midpoint. Jonrowe's best finish
in 10 previous Iditarods was fourth in 1989.
Among the front-runners this year, only Butcher has failed to take
the lead at some point in the race.
Nine of the 68 teams that began the race have dropped out. Musher
Dave Branholm was disqualified Saturday at the Nikolai checkpoint so he
could use a snowmobile to search for a dog that escaped his team.
The 1993 race has claimed the lives of three dogs. One of musher Rick
Townsend's dogs was killed last week when it plunged into a snow bank as
the team bolted after a fox. Two other dogs died in separate incidents
in the early days of the race.
Last week, a minor flu-like illness, possibly food poisoning, hit
about 75 percent of the 2,000 dogs in the race but caused no deaths or
dropouts.
The Iditarod Trail follows a route blazed during the Gold Rush of
1908 to 1925, when $35 million in gold ore was extracted from around the
village of Iditarod, now a ghost town. In 1925, the trail became a
lifeline over which vital serum was delivered to diphtheria-stricken
Nome.

Probably got shot by someone trying to rescue Susan from a moose, hitting
the dog and the moose instead of the intended target....
I had thought that the animosity was just between her and Rick Swenson, but
it seems that most of the other mushers can't stand her either....
She does pamper those dogs though.
The dog/health requirements have gotten lots more stringent too, in the
past couple of years......

They just wanna pull. I have a feeling it's so inbred in them....
Mine will pull any chance he gets and he loves it.
Sled dogs are only around 40 pounds -- the good ones. But man can they
pull....
Like in other sports too, certain dogs tend to be better at being in
certain spots in the team. A good lead dog won't run well back in the
traces, nor does it work well the other way around....

>>But do the dogs have a choice in the matter?
Yabbut I suppose that has to do with how you define "choice". I
seem to recall that when Susan won it for the 2nd time, a tee vee show
did a special on her, her dawgs and other things.
One of the things she used to do to get the dawgs to pull was to
take their puppies away and tell the dawgs that if they didn't pull the
sled, at record pace, she was gonna ship the poopie puppies off to
SeaWorld to be fed to Shamu the Killer Whale!
Most, if not all, chose to pull the sled.

| Very interesting, and ESPN went out of their way to demonstrate the
pampering the dogs get from the mushers.
ABC sold out to the PC animal rights groups. Timberland and ESPN took the
courageous road by participating with the Humane Society in a program
to ensure proper care for the dogs, for sponsoring orientation
programs for new mushers, and for PR programs to educate the media.
