He says his legs are as healthy as they've been in five years, and he's
already hit 2 HRs so far. He'll make the team if he doesn't fall apart
physically. You don't make a desperation public relations move like

I agree that the signing didn't make much sense considering the Tigers'
current needs and strengths. So why'd they do it? I'd be worried about
that PR factor. However, *if* he can make a reasonable physical comeback
(and he's stolen a couple of bases in addition to those HRs-- Gibson
never did exercise any restraint, exhibition game or not), I'd probably
still rather have Gibson's bat in the lineup than Dan Gladden's, and
Gibson was out in left field in the game against the Sox yesterday.
Brogna looks like he might be a little weak with the stick for a
1B/DH-only type...

| Yep, 'ole Cec is getting hot. Two dingers last night, and I believe I
read that he's got 26 RBI's in his last 16 games. (Prior to last night)
Wonder if there's been a lineup change whereby he's getting better
pitches to hit, or are the opposing pitchers finally realizing that
just about anyone in that lineup can hit it out?
On another note, last night I took just a short drive and had Jimmie
Myers on. He was interviewing some old-time pitcher. I didn't hear
the name, but I believe he had at one time pitched for Cincinatti. He
played during the Babe's career.
Anyway, he was asked about changing managers and his answer was that
you had to have the horses first. No players, then no manager could
win. He said the Cinci team he was on was so bad, that he'll always
remember in one game where the Reds got 1 run and the lead in the early
innings, and one of his fellow players told him: "We'll, there's your
run. You're on your own now." :*) He laughed about it, but it
reminded me of the present Sox.

Nice historical perspective piece on Cecil Fielder in today's Globe by
Boston's best sportswriter, Bob Ryan. The article stems from Fielder's
monumental 485 ft. blast onto the Tiger Stadium leftfield roof last
Friday night. What other Boston columnist would just up and decide to
write a commentary on Fielder, comparing him to the great slugging
behemoths of the past (much less be at home on a Friday night watching
Detroit-Texas on ESPN!)? And the article is not cheapened by the usual
obligatory slams at the current Red Sox or modern baseball players, but
is pure baseball...

If either team had any guts, they would. If you think you're making a
good trade, strengthening your team as much as the opponents', you go
ahead and make a trade in the division, especially if it's strictly a
shortterm thing where everyone's full hand is on the table (veterans
for veterans). Unfortunately, your average gutless baseball man who is
more worried about looking bad than fixing his team's problems refuses
to make such a deal, citing this ridiculous unwritten "rule".

And the same *should* happen if you do nothing when you have a chance
and the other teams wins it. In this case, I don't think either one
of these teams has a great chance to win the division this season with
what they've got right now, so fear should not be the motivating factor.
I think that Toronto, Baltimore, and New York are the clear favorites.
However, I believe that the Red Sox stand a much better chance of
filling their needs outside the division than the Tigers do, because
pitching is such a scarce resource. If the Tigers would absolutely
refuse to deal, say, a Rob Deer for a Jose Melendez/John Dopson package,
it would hurt them more than the Red Sox. The Red Sox currently
possess the scarcer resource.

What's the alternative for the Tigers to get a decent starting pitcher?
Are they going to go after the big stakes with Tim Belcher or Denny
Martinez? Are they going to trade their own young pitching (which is
what those teams that have fallen out of the race want)? I think not.
Would Dopson *and* Melendez help them? I think so. I only picked Deer
because he seemed to be a guy whose HR bat and glove in RF could help
the Sox some, but who hasn't done much at all for the Tigers.
I think Lou Gorman should be slapped around with a mackerel if he makes
*no* moves, inside or outside of the division, when he's overloaded
with pitching (a short term strength). I wouldn't give any young
kids to a team in the division that'll beat me for 10 years after my
player has retired, but I wouldn't worry about being embarrassed by
veterans for one season when I'm a longshot in the short term anyway.
It's called having some guts, a category which Lou doesn't lead the
league in. Among others, Pat Gillick dealt within the AL East and came
up roses on a couple of occasions...

They won't trade for a Denny Martinez or Belcher. Did it in the past

Well, that's logic that I would have to disagree with (if that's
Detroit's thinking) for the following reasons:
1) None of these players is likely to make much of an impact; only Deer
would even have a chance
2) Detroit would get pitching on the cheap because only Boston in the
entire major leagues could be interested in such average position
players for starting pitching
3) Detroit needs to worry more about strengthening themselves to beat
out Toronto, New York, and Baltimore from up top than how much a bit
player might help weaker Boston down below
Like I said before, such a deal would hurt Boston's chances more than
it would hurt Detroit's. I greatly respect Detroit's lineup, and one
more starter, even a John Dopson, would go a long way. Frank Viola
would win 18-20 games for that team just by showing up. In Boston, he
struggles a bit, gives up 3 runs and it's another "L"...

This morning's Globe reports that the Tigers are trying to move the guy
I liked, Rob Deer, to the Red Sox. Sparky is quoted as saying "If you
think it's going to help you, fine. Even if it's in your own
division-- what's the difference as long as it helps both teams?" You
gotta have more confidence in your management, Walt! Eminently
sensible. Better for the Tigers to get ahold of some pitching before
the Sox deal it away for Bip Roberts or Shane Mack or other players
that might help them even more than Deer.

I am not giving up on them. There's still a lot of games. Last year
Brew crew made a run for the pennant and they were in a worst spot
as the Tigers are in right now.

Walt,
Good news for you if you haven't heard already. Tigers lead 7-1 in the
bottom of the second. They knocked McDonald out in the first with
another big inning.
All I know is Cecil has driven one run in, so that drought is over. The
announcer said it was his 96th RBI to take the AL lead back.
They gave some stats on the O's pitchers in this series. The starters have
pitched a grand total of five innings in the three games and have an ERA of
40+ The relievers have an ERA of 10.80. (That's so far :*))

But they are 8 games out and have 4 teams in front of them So all
4 have to play 5-8 games worse than Detroit. That is a tough
position to be in since it is mostly out of Detroits hands, they need
a lot of help from other teams.

| But they all play each other along the way. Look how fast the Sox
and Orioles got into this. I'm not saying it's a done deal, but if
they win today, that's 2 games they've gained on Baltimore and at
least 2 on Boston in a week's time.

This was extremely unusual though, and required major mini-collapses by
both Toronto and Detroit, and a minor mini-collapse by the Yankees. I
recall sending the Sawmain a note stating that all hope was lost
regardless of how well the Sox were playing right around the time of
the All-Star break, because it was almost impossible to catch and
surpass *four* teams. The Sox then immediately proceeded to go from a
point where they were over 10+ games back to the lead (for a day or two)
in the fastest time period in 93 years of American League history! Only
three weeks, and they had to jump four teams to do it...

Nope. There's a difference between rooting for something to happen and
expecting it to happen. If the Tigers come back from where they are
right now, it will positively be one of the greatest comebacks in baseball
history. That's a fact.

any sense. The national media still list the Tigers as being in the
hunt, even if the Boston media doesn't.

don't follow baseball too closely; even I concede that there is no way the
Mets will come close to winning the division this year. I'm glad to see there
are some who are more optimistic than I am. You are welcome to adopt

I heerd it were 17-11. Lessee, the lasted three games, the O's has
lost 15-1, 15-5, and 17-11. Hail, they even had one of their catchers
in there pitching today.
Helluva series the O's played there, eh????
