UNION won its second ECAC Div I hockey game last
weekend, defeating Princeton 3-1. In their second year as a Div I
team, the skating DUTCHMEN have now tied last year's league win
total. Onward and Upward!

Ah, the memories of last season while I was still attending
Northeastern University. Maine was ranked #1 and came into Matthews
Arena in Boston with their band. Before the game I predict to the
rest of the NU band that we will not only play well (we finished with
something like 10 wins on the season against a kazillion loses) but
we would win 4-3. The two bands battled it out while thousands of
fans cheered the team (versuses the usual hundreds of fans) while the
teams battled it out on the ice. Final score: 4-3 Northeastern and
the season is salvaged by beating the number 1 team 8^)

I believe that the ECAC and Hockey East Champs get seeds 1 and 2.
3,4,5, and six are the 2 next best (maybe by selection) from the ECAC and
Hockey East, and something like the last two qualifiers from the
West/CHHA.
On Friday, #3 plays #6 and #4 plays #5; the two winners play #1 and #2
on Saturday. The Saturday winners advance to the NCAA final four.
This may not be entirely correct, but I think it's close.
FWIW, the Worcester area is so devoid of college hockey
coverage/knowledge that my wife's place of employment has been
advertising their group ticket sales indicating that the teams were
chosen (this was a month ago at least), and that UMass would be
playing!

| Maine ws outplayed for the first two periods, but turned it up in the
3rd. They had a goal waved off, but it was definetly a goal on the
replay. The Maine forward did the old wrap around from behind the net,
squeezed by the MS defenseman and slid it past the goalie, far post.
In the heat of the play the net was dislodged and rocked forward, but
it never came the pegs. It just tilted forward as the puck went
throught the crease, over the goal line and out the other side.
I have never seen that happen before, but on the replay (The real play
happened so fast that it looked like there was a hole in the net) it
clearly showed the net tilting forward and the puck going out the back.
The ref was out of position, and I doubt he could really see from where
he was, so it was a waved off goal for Maine.
I thought the MS goalie was superb, he was challenging all of Maines
shooters, comming out and he seemed to be saying to them, give it your
best, because I'M on my game tonight boys. He made some great stops.
BU was Outclassed, outhustled, outplayed. Should be a good final.

| Beanpot is a great place for upsets. BC is certainly an underdog vs
the balling thunder of the crimson caterbridgians (last was to see if I
could get Tommy to hurl in his office), but they never (hardly) won it
when Snooks had Sheehy and Stevens and other all America loaded teams.
Harvard does not like to lose to bc in a sport where they have a chance
to beat em. Believe it or not they used to play a lot in basketball
including some of the earlier versions of the beanpot basketball
tournement (same 4 but I believe they also tried it with umass).
There were some fairly decent bc-nu matchups especially when they

Colorado College and St. Cloud were two teams on the bubble. Colorado
College for winning the regular season WHCA (sp?) title and losing in a

the title. So literally, St. Cloud missed their chance and Colorado
College slipped into the picture. At least that is how I understand

St. Cloud, Minnesota and Wisconsin are the three WCHA teams heading to
the NCAA's. One reason they may have took St. Cloud is because the
top four teams all ended up so closely together. So even though St.
Cloud finished fourth, they were only a few points out of first. They
did beat my Gophs in the last regular season game to prevent us from
winning the title. That and their very good showing in the stupid
post-season tournament put them in.
It'd be fun if the Gophs could win it all in St. Paul.

| Incredible 3-overtime game between Maine and Michigan. I happened to
see the end of the third period and the overtimes. Incredible action
in the first overtime - both goalies (Allison for Maine; a freshman
named Turco for Michigan) were terrific. Pace slowed a bit in the
second OT, but both goalies made incredible saves on breakaways. Then,
at the beginning of the third OT, Maine had a faceoff in the Michigan
end. The puck went into a tangle of players, then popped out to the
guy who took the faceoff for Maine. He was alone in front and made no
mistake. Michigan goalie (who finished with 50 saves) didn't have a
chance. Maine goalie had 47 saves.
In the other semifinal, BU scored four unanswered goals in the 3rd
period for a 7-3 win over Minnesota.

Lsat summer they had a front page article in the Hartford Courant about the
team, five years later.
Matt Sewell was the kid who got screwed out of the shirt.
I believe that Matt ended up with lots of academic honors. Some of the

Chris Drury, for all of your speculation, just decided he liked hockey

rarely has held although BU's decades long strength has resulted in the
lion's share of triumphs. Northeastern had its problems for awhile but
has held its own for a decade.
The prior final has no bearing on the matchup and if BU and BC were
ranked 1 and 2 they could easily play in the semifinal.

For those of you that missed it, the final goal of the CC-VT game was
scored with 29 seconds in 2OT with some controversy. A CC player was
doing his impression of a famous Bruin hall of fame player (diving)
when the puck deflected off his hand. Another CC player put the puck
into the net after this deflection. VT contends that the deflection
was intential and therefore the play should have been whistled dead.
The CC team contends that the player was out of control and it was not
intential.
