| The Irish went 1-3 vs Kentucky last weekend, winning the opener,
then dropping three straight.
The Irish are now 3-6, going 1-0 vs ASU, 0-2 vs Arizona,
1-1 vs Wichita State, and 1-3 vs Kentucky (all ranked teams).
I guess that shows us when ASU stands in comparison to some of
the other leading teams in the country.

ND lost both games to Arizona by just a run or two and split with
Wichita St before dropping 3/4 to Kentucky. I don't believe that
proves ND to be overrated as they just started the season..
And ASU is 21-10, no? I think we'll see both ND and ASU in the
tournament.

Yes, that's correct. But from a quick glimpse of an ESPN screen this
morning I thought I had seen that Arizona was also in? I made a mental
note that this would have taken a pretty big shocker over Oklahoma St.
in two games yesterday (Arizona won the first, the second was too late

I've got my fingers crossed. I don't quite understand the seeding, but
I'm not complaining. I don't really know if there's any advantage
of being the #1 seed over the #2 seed. I also noticed that tu is seeded
#3.
Jerry
P.S. FWIW, A&M finished their regular season ranked #1. They then proceeded
to lose 2 straight to tu in the SWC tournament. They won their regional,
though, in 4 straight, beating UCLA and UNC rather impressively. Maybe
that explains the #1 seed.

Dreifort is a relief pitcher. Which doesn't mean that ASU won't see
him for three innings or more, but then again, given the college game,
he'll probably be in every game that's in question.

Are you sure he's a reliever for Wichita?=? My paper shows his stats as

He's been a reliever this season, and is not listed amongst "probable
starters" for the CWS in my preview. In college you often see the
ace pitcher used out of the bullpen, and the coach will not hesitate to
bring the guy in in the middle innings to save a game. So for all
intents you might equate what this ace reliever does to what a MLB
baseball starter does, over a few less innings, except they'll often
use him every other day and abuse the hell out of him.

The NCAA allows 56 regular season games, not including 1 trip in 4 years
outside the mainland USA.
Typical starting pitchers in the top college baseball programs this year
have from 70-110 innings pitched. The most IP from a starter on an NCAA
tournament team this year, from what I've seen, is John Powell with 122 IP
for Auburn.
Darren Dreifort is definately a reliever. He has been so exclusively each
of the last two years. He pitched in two games in the Atlantic Regional
here in Atlanta, picking up a win and a save. He also had 4 HR's as a
designated hitter. I suspect the starter for WSU against the Sun Devils
will be Mike Brandley, 9-2. The normal #2 and #3 starters for the Shockers,
Travis Wyckoff and Brandon Baird, are both freshmen, so I suspect Brandley
will start the opener. He opened the regional against Ohio State, and also
started the tournament championship against the Buckeyes as well.
P.S. The one game WSU game I heard on the radio down here did not speak
greatly of Dreifort. He supposedly has a great fastball, but he allowed
Tech a 7th inning run (an inherited runner) to tie the score at 3-3, was
fortunate to have a great throw from RF Carl Hall nail the lead run at the
plate in the ninth, then he gave up the lead run in the 10th innings, as GT
took a 4-3 lead. (WSU rallied with two outs and a runner on third in the
10th, as two singles brought home the tying run, and on the play at the
plate attempting to get the first runner, the ball hit the runner and bounced
away, allowing WSU to get a 5-4 win, and eliminating Tech.) He had good
stuff, apparently, but Tech did some damage against him.

As much as it hurts me to write this, A&M gave the game to LSU. The

No, the CWS has two brackets, each of which are double elimination,
leading to a single elimination final for CBS.
Today: Texas A&M vs Long Beach State, and Texas vs Oklahoma State
6/9: LSU vs TAMU-CSLB winner
6/10: Wichita State vs UT-OSU winner

| Actually, nearly the entire starting staffs of the Pac-10 South
teams from last year are gone this year. ASU has only one pitcher
returning who made a start last year (Noah Peery), and he made only
one start. The division's lone returning starter who made a
significant number of starts last year is USC's Tony Nieto, who was
a catcher in 1992 and who became a starting pitcher only mid-way
through the 1993 season. Mike Schiefelbein, a highly rated
pitcher, comes off his second straight injury-plagued season for
Arizona, and is considered the only pitcher in the division likely
to be drafted in the first few rounds of the MLB draft. Could be
a down year for the Pac-10.
Meanwhile, the SEC has quite a number of returning starting pitchers
who are projected to be high draft picks when their time comes:
Brett Laxton of LSU, Carlton Loewer and Kyle Kennedy of MSU,
John Powell of Auburn, Brian Powell of Georgia, all rated in the
top 25 in the country, are returning. The ACC also returns a decent
number of pitchers from Baseball America's top 40: Brad Rigby of Tech,
Paul Wilson, Jonathon Johnson, and Phil Olson of FSU, Terry Harvey
of NCSY, Scott Schoeneweis of Duke, Bret Wagner of Wake Forest, and
Andy Taulbee of Clemson return to the conference. The south, not
the west or southwest, is the premier area of the country for college
baseball these days. That might account for some loss of interest

With a 6-5 win over Houston, U.of Texas Longhorn coach Cliff Gustafson
is now tied with former USC Rod Dedeaux (sp!) for the lead among NCAA coaches.
His 1332-325-2 record in 27 seasons will take some to beat. The USC coach took
45 seasons to establish the old record. His Longhorn teams also hold the record
for College World Series appearences.

| With 3 1/2 weeks to go until the NCAA Tournament Committee selects
the 48 teams going to the NCAA tournament, here are my thoughts. They
are based on what I've seen around the country, but I am not fully
cognizant of what's going on in every conference -- sometimes I can
only read about events a couple of weeks later. Maybe some locals
can help me:
Atlantic Coast:
Clemson, Florida State, and Georgia Tech will be the top three seeds
for the conference tournament and are all locks to make the NCAA's.
Undoubtedly, one of these three will win the conference tournament and
get the NCAA automatic bid. They play each other in the next few weeks,
with Tech at FSU this week, Clemson at Tech the following, then the
Tigers meeting FSU the week after that. From UNC, NCSU, Wake, and Duke
I expect to see 2 additional teams make the NCAA's. Currently Duke is
4th in the conference at 8-7, UNC at 9-8, and NCSU and Wake at 9-9.
Right now, I lean towards UNC and NCSU, as the Devils and Demons out-of-
conference schedule is still pretty weak. Duke/Wake probably has to
finish higher that one of the other two in BOTH the regular season and
the conference tournament to make the NCAA's. Maryland, and Virginia
are out of the running.
Atlantic Ten or Metro Atlantic:
These two conference champions meet at the A-10 champion home field
in a best-2-of-3 series to determine the NCAA rep. In most years,
Rutgers and LeMoyne would be fairly heavy favorites, but neither has
been as impressive as in the past. Rutgers and Massachusetts
appear to be the class of the A-10 so far, but West Virginia has the
talent to compete, especially in the A-10 tournament. U Mass won 2-of-3
at home against WVU this past week and has a slight lead over Rutgers
for the #1 seed in the A-10 tournament and the right to avoid WVU in
the first round. Canisius has surprisingly dominated MAAC North with
a 13-1 conference mark, and will be favored over LeMoyne, Iona, and
probably St.Peter's in the MAAC tournament. At this point, I would
rate Rutgers a slight favorite over UMass, WVU, and Canisius for
the 1 NCAA spot from these two conferences, primarily due to pitcher
Chris Cochrane (unbeaten and dominating in the A-10 this year).
Big East:
Pittsburgh has been playing extremely good baseball for the second year
in a row. They are the best team in the conference at this point, but
will be challenged by Seton Hall (and possibly Providence) in the
conference tournament. But don't forget last year. St.John's needed
surprise losses by BC and Pitt the last regular season weekend, plus
a win in a make-up game at Georgetown, just to make the BET, but won
the conference tournament and got to the NCAA regional finals in Tempe.
They have a lot of the same players and look to be in position for
the 4th and final tournament spot. Surprisingly, the Big East has
gotten 2 bids to the NCAA's in 2 of the last 3 years. I look for only
one this year, with Pitt just a little stronger than Seton Hall in
the end.
Big Eight:
Oklahoma State, Kansas, and Oklahoma are powerful; Missouri and Nebraska
will make the conference tournament as the 4+5 seeds. Iowa State and
Kansas State will battle for the last conference bid. Oklahoma State
in all likelihood will win the conference tournament for, what is it-
16 straight years ? OSU, Kansas, and Oklahoma will all make the NCAA's.
Big South:
No conference tournament here. The regular season conference champions
make the NCAA's and no one else will. UNC-Greensboro has won 5 straight
conference games against UNC-Asheville and 4th place UM-Baltimore County
to take a 2 1/2 game lead over Radford and a 3 1/2 game lead over
Coastal Carolina with two weekends left. UNCG plays at Radford this
weekend, while last place UNCA plays at Coastal Carolina. Radford leads
the conference in hitting and runs scored, with UNCG third. Meanwhile,
UNCG leads the conference in both pitching and defense. Radford rates
last in the Big South in pitching, and that should allow the Spartans
to win at least 1 of the 3 and maintain a comfortable lead. Radford
took 2-of-3 from Coastal last week, but lost ground during the UNCG
sweep over UMBC. Look for the Spartans to make their first NCAA trip.
Big Ten:
Ohio State and Minnesota are the class of the league. Everyone else
has been inconsistent in league play so far. Ohio State has a superb
record both in and out of the conference. Minnesota's overall mark
is improving since they opened with 3 games each at Georgia Tech,
Florida State, and Miami will have trouble. The Gophers started 1-8,
but then swept the Oscar Meyer tourney against Arizona State, Arizona,
and Ohio State. Michigan, Iowa, and Northwestern look to be the
contenders for the third and fourth spots in the conference tournament,
but seem to have little chance for the NCAAs.
Big West:
Three teams from this conference should go to the NCAA's. Nevada,
CS Fullerton, and CS Long Beach appear to be clearly better than any
other teams in the conference. After a 27-game winning streak, Pacific
has fallen to 4-7 in the Big West, and may well finish as far down as
sixth in the conference. San Jose State, the likely fourth place team
at this point, has not done well enough outside the conference to
get a 4th bid for the Big West.
Colonial:
This conference should get only one bid. Old Dominion clearly appears
to be the conference's best team at this point, having clinched the
CAA tournament #1 seed and acting as host. ODU has 3 excellent starters
and are the quickest team in the bunch. James Madison has won 7
straight conference games and has ended conference play as the #2 seed,
and their top starter, Bobby McNichol, is 7-0 on the season.
Richmond, UNC-Wilmington, and East Carolina might be able to get to
the tournament finals, but overall Old Dominion is a much deeper
team and is my pick to advance. Being swept in 3 games at Fresno State
recently probably is an omen regarding NCAA activity, however.
Ivy or Northeast:
These two conference champions meet at the NEC champion home field
in a best-2-of-3 series to determine the NCAA rep. Yale has clinched
the Rolfe division title, and will meet either Penn or Columbia in the
Ivy League playoffs. The Quakers and Lions are tied at 12-6, and meet
Saturday in a doubleheader that ends the conference season for them.
If they tie, they will meet in a 1-game playoff, with the winner
meeting Yale in the Ivy league playofs in Middletown CT. Meanwhile,
Fairleigh Dickinson, Rider, and Long Island are co-leaders so far in
the NEC, while St.Francis is looking to be the 4th tournament team.
I give a slight edge to Pennsylvania over Rider, Yale, and FDU
for this spot, but any of the 7 could get it -- there is no clear
favorite.
Metro:
South Florida is the best team in the conference and will get an NCAA
bid as conference tournament champion or as an at-large pick. The
league could get a second bid. UNC-Charlotte's 3-game sweep over Tulane
this past weekend has boosted them to the #2 spot in the conference,
but Southern Mississippi, Tulane, or Virginia Commonwealth could
surprise and win the conference tournament to get the automatic bid and
put USF in over as the at-large team.
Mid-Continent or Patriot:
These two conference champions meet at the AMCU champion home field
in a best-2-of-3 series to determine the NCAA rep. Wright State is
clearly the best team in the Mid Continent contingent; EIU and UIC
are the best of the rest, but not really close to the Raiders.
Navy should win the southern division of the Patriot league and thereby
would host the Patriot League playoffs against the northern division
champ, which will be Fordham or Army. Fordham should play in Dayton
against Wright State for this NCAA berth, and I would expect Fordham
would win that series.
Mid Eastern Athletic or Trans America:
These two conference champions meet at the TAAC champion home field
in a best-2-of-3 series to determine the NCAA rep. Florida A&M
started the season horribly, but got hot shortly before the MEAC
tournament, and swept 4 straight at home to win the conference title.
They have no chance to win an NCAA spot. The TAAC tournament champion
will probably be either Florida International, Central Florida, or
Stetson. FIU currently is at 10-5 in the conference versus Stetson
and UCF, both at 7-8 in the east and meetin for the final eastern
division playoff spot in Orlando this weekend. Mercer leads the west
division behind the pitching of Rick Miller, 11-2, with 1-run losses
to Florida and Florida State. Samford and SE Louisiana are tied for
the second spot. I look at FIU as a slight favorite over Stetson and
Mercer to get this NCAA tournament spot.
Midwestern Collegiate:
Notre Dame will host the conference tournament and is the most talented
team in the conference, but should get challenged by Detroit Mercy for
the automatic berth. Evansville, normally a contender in the MCC, has
not played well this year and probably will not challenge, but is the
third best team in the league. Butler, Xavier, and LaSalle are the
rest of a not-so-great bunch of teams.
Missouri Valley:
Wichita State is not the team this year that it has been in the past,
but is easily the best of the bunch here. They will get an NCAA bid
even if they fail to win the conference tournament, but failure there
is unlikely. Southwest Missouri State and Creighton are the best of
the rest, and if SMSU does not get swept this weekend in Wichita, and
makes it to the MVC tournament championship game, the Bears could join
the Shockers in the NCAA field.
North Atlantic:
Delaware is the strongest NAC team this year, with Northeastern a
close second. Maine has played well following a 2-20 start, and will
contend with Drexel for the conference 3rd place spot, but the Blue Hens
will be the best in the regular season. Next year Drexel will have the
best 1-2 pitching tandem in the league in Kris Doiron and Nick Rizzo,
and they may be enough to win the NAC tournament this year for the
Dragons, but I am picking Delaware to edge Northeastern for the NCAA
bid behind pitcher Jamie Wilson.
Ohio Valley or Southern:
These two conference champions meet at the SC champion home field
in a best-2-of-3 series to determine the NCAA rep. Austin Peay State,
Morehead State, and Southeast Missouri State are about equally
talented, IMO, but APSU should be able to pull out the regular
season title and host the conference tournament. Whichever of the 3
gets to play the SC champion will have a hard time against the
Western Carolina Catamounts, however. WCU has been ranked the last
month and has played great ball all year long, but after an 18-1 start
in the Southern Conference, the Cats lost 3 of their last 4 conference
games. However, the only other SC contenders, Georgia Southern and
Marshall, were both swept in the regular season by WCU and are unlikely
to win the SC tournament in Charleston, either. This spot almost
surely belongs to Western Carolina; if they fail, they probably would
get an at-large spot in the NCAAs.
Pacific Ten:
In the south, it's easy: Southern California, Arizona State, and
Stanford are all very good and will make the NCAA's; California,
UCLA, and Arizona are not good (or very bad) and will not. The north
is not so clear, although it appears that Oregon State will surprise
and win the regular season. Washington and Washington State will also
contend in the Pac-10 north playoffs, but WSU is ineligible for the
NCAA's. I suspect the OSU-Washington winner will make the NCAA's,
and in a somewhat down year for most teams across the nation, both
may got to the NCAA regionals.
Southeastern:
Eight teams contend for 5 or 6 NCAA tournament spots. In reality,
LSU, Auburn, Florida, and Tennessee have all just about wrapped up
NCAA bids already. South Carolina has the edge for the conference's
fifth bid, but must end up in 3rd in the east and win at least one
tournament bid to assure itself of an NCAA spot. Mississippi State
is improving after a surprisingly mediocre start, and could make the
NCAA's as the 6th representative from the SEC. Arkansas, Mississippi,
and Kentucky must all close very strongly if any is to supplant one
of the above schools in the NCAA ranks.
Southland:
Northwestern State and McNeese State appear to be the two best teams
again this year in the SLC. Last year The Demons won the regular
season and hosted the SLC tournament, but McNeese's Cowboys won the
conference tournament and got the NCAA bid. Northwestern will again
win the regular season and host the tournament, but McNeese may once
again surprise the slightly better Demons to get the bid. These
two may get a challenge from Nicholls State, Sam Houston State, or
Texas-San Antonio in the conference tournament, but I doubt it. My
edge goes to Northwestern State for having tourney home field advantage.
Southwest:
What a surprise here. Texas A&M, a pre-season top-20 selection and
original host to the SWC tournament, has been eliminated from title
contention. The SWC tournament will move to Austin, Lubbock, or to
The Ballpark at Arlington. TCU will be the number 1 seed, with
Rice, Texas Tech, and Texas the other 3 teams in the conference
tournament. Texas must sweep TTU this weekend in Austin to avoid the
#4 spot in the tournament. TCU and Rice should both get into the
NCAA's, with either Texas or TTU (and possibly both) joining them.
This could be the year, however, that the 'Horns fail to host an NCAA
regional; the last time this happened was 1978.
Southwestern Athletic or West Coast:
These two conference champions meet at the WCAC champion home field
in a best-2-of-3 series to determine the NCAA rep. In most years,
the SWAC champ wouldn't stand a chance, and in fact have threatened
not to participate in this series because of financial costs. But
this is not a normal year in the WCAC. Santa Clara has supplanted
perennial champion Pepperdine as the likely conference champion, and
it seems unlikely that the Waves will get an at-large bid at this point.
Southern, Grambling, and Jackson State are probably equally likely
at this point to win the SWAC tournament, being held this weekend.
None of the three have played well enough recently to contend with
the Broncos in Santa Clara.
Sun Belt:
Southwestern Louisiana and Jacksonville are the hottest teams in the
Sun Belt currently, and are probably the favorites to make the NCAA
tournament at this point. USL meets UNO in a western division showdown
this week, with each (and Lamar) having clinched the 3 western division
tournament spots. South Alabama and Arkansas State will join the
Dolphins as eastern division representatives. The eastern division
top three are all within 1/2 game of each other, and the eastern champ
will host the conference tournament, so every game is important from
here on out. Realistically, past history indicates any of the six
teams could win the conference tournament and automatic NCAA bid, which
would make USL the at-large team.
Western Athletic:
What a poor year for the WAC. Any one of 7 teams could win the WAC
title, which is held at the eastern division champion this year.
San Diego State is the best in the west, with Cal State Northridge,
Cal State Sacramento, and Fresno State about equally behind the Aztecs.
Meanwhile, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Brigham Young are about equal from
the east. My guess is the WAC will get only 1 bid to the NCAA's.
The east division champion (probably Wyoming or UNM) would have a
slight edge over SDSU, but it could be anyone from this group.
At Large:
Other than noted above, two independents, Miami (Florida) and Memphis,
look to get NCAA tournament bids. Miami clearly is already in.
Memphis has dominated a weak Great Midwest conference which has only
five teams and does not qualify even for a play-in series. Memphis
should win the conference tournament or get to the finals, which would
probably boost them into the NCAAs. At one point, Grand Canyon was
making a bid, but they were swept by Fullerton and lost 2-of-3 to ASU,
and now seem an unlikely candidate. The best of the other two
non-qualifying conferences, LIU-C.W.Post (from the ECAC Diamond) and
Troy State (from the East Coast) have schedules far to weak for
consideration.

I would think that any teams that make it from other than the real
baseball conferences (SWC,SEC,Big8,Pac-10) could consider themselves
overachieving. I do not say this as a slam, but more to the competition. Before
the NCAA limited the number of games, the southern teams had the advantage since
they got to play more thanks to the weather. I still think the weather has to be
to their advantage since they can begin practice must earlier than those teams
up north.

The Pac-10 hasn't been the NCAA's toughest conference in the last
three years. They are definately behind ACC, SEC this year, and
about equivalent to the SWC, Big Eight, and Big West this year.
Arizona and UCLA really stunk this year, and California wasn't
much better. Stanford and ASU have played extermely well, and USC
has been good (although failing to live up to expectations), but
the ACC and SEC have much more talent in the lower tier of teams,
and their best are a little better.

| Updating my thoughts from last week, based on more current information:
With 1 week to go until the NCAA Tournament Committee selects
the 48 teams going to the NCAA tournament, here are my thoughts. They
are based on what I've seen around the country, but I am not fully
cognizant of what's going on in every conference -- sometimes I can
only read about events a couple of weeks later. Maybe some locals
can help me:
Atlantic Coast:
Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, and Florida State will be the top 4 seeds
for the conference tournament and are all locks to make the NCAA's.
Undoubtedly, one of these three will win the conference tournament and
get the NCAA automatic bid. Clemson has won 2-of-3 against both FSU
and Tech to win the regular season ACC title. Tech blew a 4-2 lead
in the ninth Sunday, but won 20-4 on Saturday over the Tigers to
clinch a seciond-place tie in the ACC. By winning 2-of-3 at FSU,
then swweping UNC and Wake, Duke ended up tied for second, a won the
coin toss for the 2nd seed in the tourney. FSU ended fourth. These
four teams are locks to make the NCAA tournament. The ACC will get a
fifth team, probably NCSU instead of UNC, or even Wake, but the results
of the ACC tournament will have the big deciding factor in picking the
fifth team. Maryland and Virginia bring up the rear, but each picked
up big regular season wins; Maryland over FSU + Tech, and UVa over FSU.
Atlantic Ten or Metro Atlantic:
These two conference champions meet at the A-10 champion home field
in a best-2-of-3 series to determine the NCAA rep. West Virginia
won twice against St.Bonaventure on Sunday after defeating regular
season champ Massachusetts in the late game on Saturday. WVU will
host the MAAC champ, St.Peter's. St.Peter's upset Canisius, 7-6, on
the opening day, after Canisius went 17-1 in the regular season MAAC
games. St.Peter's then beat LeMoyne twice for the title. St.Peter's
has an overall losing record, and should be a heavy underdog to WVU
in this series.
Big East:
Pittsburgh has been playing extremely good baseball for the second year
in a row. They are the best team in the conference at this point, but
will be challenged by Providence and Seton Hall in the Big East
conference tournament. Connecticut is the fourth team, nosing out
perennial tournament contender St.John's in the final weekend.
Surprisingly, the Big East has gotten 2 bids to the NCAA's in 2 of the
last 3 years. I look for only one this year, with Pitt just a little
stronger than Seton Hall in the end.
Big Eight:
Oklahoma State, Kansas, and Oklahoma are powerful; Nebraska plays the
roll of a dark horse, with another late season surge. Missouri and
Iowa State make up the tournament field, but neither has the talent
to knock off the top teams to win the tournament title and automatic
NCAA berth. Oklahoma State in all likelihood will win the conference
tournament for, what is it - 16 straight years ? OSU, Kansas, and
Oklahoma will all make the NCAA's.
Big South:
No conference tournament here. The North Carolina-Greensboro Spartans
won the regular season title and will make the NCAA's; no one else will.
The Spartans make the NCAA Division I tournament for the first time.
They are a good team and could surprise with a couple of wins in the
regionals.
Big Ten:
Ohio State and Minnesota are the class of the league. Everyone else
has been inconsistent in league play so far. Ohio State has a superb
record both in and out of the conference. Minnesota's overall mark
is superb since they opened with 3 games each at Georgia Tech,
Florida State, and Miami will have trouble. The Gophers started 1-8,
but then swept the Oscar Meyer tourney against Arizona State, Arizona,
and Ohio State. Michigan State, Iowa, and Michigan tied for third and
fourth for the conference tournament, but none of these seem to have
much chance to win the Big 10 tourney and get to the NCAA's.
Big West:
Three teams from this conference should go to the NCAA's. Nevada,
CS Fullerton, and CS Long Beach appear to be clearly better than any
other teams in the conference. Nevada will make it's first NCAA Div.I
tourney appearance; the questions is whether they can hang onto first
place in the Big West, and how high a seeding they can get. Fullerton
should get a #1 seeding; the question is how high and where will Nevada
and Long Beach be seeded ?
Ivy or Northeast:
These two conference champions meet at the NEC champion home field
in a best-2-of-3 series to determine the NCAA rep. Yale won 2-of-3
in the Ivy League playoff series, and will travel to Lawrenceville, PA,
to play Rider in the NCAA qualifying series. Rider beat Wagner, FDU,
and LIU in 3 straight NEC tournament games to host the play-in series.
Rider had a tough time in the opener against Wagner, but looked good
in the final two games. Since they are the series host, look for the
Broncs to win this NCAA spot.
Metro:
UNC-Charlotte's three game sweeps over Tulane and Louisville late in
the year moved the 49'ers past sluming South Florida into first place
in the Metro Conference. South Florida is the best team in the
conference and probably will get an NCAA bid as conference tournament
champion or as an at-large pick, but the Bulls did lose two-of-three
to USM and Tulane in its last two conference series. The league could
get a 2nd bid. UNCC, Southern Mississippi, Tulane, or Va.Commonwealth
could surprise and win the conference tournament to get the automatic
bid and put USF in as an at-large team.
Mid American:
Kent appeared to be the class of the league two weeks ago, but have
not done that well against Central Michigan and Ohio to close the
season. The Flames have one of the best staffs in the nation, and are
better than the Chippewas, who are the next best team in terms of
talent. CMU was just swept in 4 games at Bowling Green, however.
BGSU is the hottest team entering the tournament, with Ohio the
second-hottest. Any of these 4 could win the tournament, but look for
Kent's pitching depth and home-field advantage to give them the title.
Mid-Continent or Patriot:
These two conference champions meet at the AMCU champion home field
in a best-2-of-3 series to determine the NCAA rep. Neither team is
that good. Navy won a doubleheader at home last weekend against Army
in the Patriot League playoffs, and will travel to Charleston, Illinois,
to play a rather mediocre Eastern Illinois squad, who won the regular
season title in the Mid-Continent Conference. Look for EIU to win
with the home field advantage.
They have little chance to win an NCAA spot. Southeastern Louisiana
won a doubleheader against Mercer at Macon on Monday to win the TAAC
title, and will host the play-in series. From FAMU's standpoint, SLU
was the weakest of the 4 in the TAAC tournament. For the Rattlers to
win the series, Shohn Lewis must beat Chris Laiche and SLU on Thursday.
Don't look for it to happen.
Midwestern Collegiate:
Notre Dame will host the conference tournament and is the most talented
team in the conference, but should get challenged by a recently hot
Evansville, and Detroit Mercy for the automatic berth. Butler, Xavier,
and LaSalle are the rest of a not-so-great bunch of teams. Notre Dame
should get the NCAA bid.
Missouri Valley:
Wichita State is easily the best of the bunch here. There deep pitching
staff has shored up a team that did not start as strong as usual.
SMSU won 2-of-3 from Creighton to take the #2 spot, but the Bears
are 0-13 in the past 4 years in Wichita. Creighton and Bradley are
the best of the rest, but don't look for anyone other than Wichita to
get an at-large berth if they fail to win the MVC tournament.
North Atlantic:
Delaware should be a considered a slight favorite to win the NAC
playoffs this year, with Northeastern and Drexel about even and right
behind Delaware. Northeastern has an experienced and deep squad by
northeastern standards, and this has paid off, as Drexel is not yet as
experienced, but Delaware has the top 1-2 pitching punch in the
league. Hartford surprised a young Maine squad in two straight games
in Orono in the first round of the NAC playoffs, and will join the
other three in the NAC tournament this weekend at Parsons Field in
the metro Boston area. As tournament host, Northeastern may have an
advantage, but look for pitcher Jamie Wilson to lead Delaware to the
NAC tournament title and NCAA bid.
Ohio Valley or Southern:
These two conference champions meet at the SC champion home field
in a best-2-of-3 series to determine the NCAA rep. Middle Tennessee
won twice this past weekend over Austin Peay in Clarksville to take
the OVC crown after romping over #2 seed Morehead State, 15-2, in the
tournament opener. MTSU catches a break as The Citadel, SC tournament
host, edged regular season champ Western Carolina in the SC title game.
The Citadel will bring a losing record into the qualifying series.
It is likely this spot will go to The Citadel, who will host the
qualifying series. Western Carolina may garner an at-large spot,
but the Catamounts lost three straight in Miami and do not currently
seem attractive after a late-season mini-slump.
Pacific Ten:
In the south, it's easy: Stanford, Southern California, and ASU are
all very good and will make the NCAA's; California, UCLA, and Arizona
are not good (or very bad) and will not. The north is not so clear,
although it appears that Oregon State will surprise and win the regular
season. Washington has closed to within 1 game of the lead and has
played a stronger schedule. I suspect that Washington will make the
NCAA tournament; OSU may get in if they hold off Washington and win the
northern division crown in the final week of the season.
Southeastern:
Eight teams contend for 5 or 6 NCAA tournament spots. In reality,
LSU, MSU, Florida, and Tennessee have all just about wrapped up
NCAA bids already. Auburn has closed very poorly, but will still
make the NCAA's if they play well in the Western Division tournament.
Arkansas, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Kentucky probably must win
their divisional tournament if their school is to make the NCAA's.
Look for Tennessee to win the automatic bid.
Southland:
Northwestern State and McNeese State appear to be the two best teams
again this year in the SLC. Last year the Demons won the regular
season and hosted the SLC tournament, but McNeese's Cowboys won the
conference tournament and got the NCAA bid. Northwestern again is
hosting the SLC tournament, but McNeese pulled off an opening round
surprise over the slightly better Demons in the first round of the SLC
tournament. These two may get a challenge from Texas-San Antonio, a
first round tourney winner over Sam Houston State, but I doubt it. My
edge goes to McNeese State with the opening round victory.
Southwest:
Texas won three straight games in the SWC tournament, beating top seed
TCU 3-0, Texas Tech 2-1, and Tech again, 4-3 in 12 innings. Texas
thereby clinched a spot in the NCAA's. By getting to the finals, Tech
should have also assured itself of an NCAA spot. TCU lost two straight
but probably is in by virtue of finishing first in the SWC regular
season. Rice is the questionable team; they did not finish strong in
the regular season, won only 1 game in the tournament, and finished
with a 34-21 overall mark. I'd be surprised if the Owls made it to
the NCAA's.
Santa Clara beat LMU, 6-5, in
10 innings on Monday to clinch the WCC crown, but has not played that
well recently. Jackson State won the SWAC tournament but does not
appear to have the strength to beat SCU on the road, although they would
have a better chance against a slumping Santa Clara team than against a
Pepperdine team that played much better in the second half of the year.
South Alabama has played
well enough in recent weeks to clinch the division title, and the
eastern champs will host the conference tournament. Realistically,
past history indicates any of the six teams could win the conference
tournament and automatic NCAA bid, which would make USL the at-large
team. Look for USA and USA to be the two that advance.
Western Athletic:
What a poor year for the WAC. BYU won the eastern division and will
host the WAC playoffs against Fresno State. The Bulldogs have been
hot recently, finishing at 15-9 and holding the tie breaker advantage
over San Diego State, who also ended at 15-9 following a critical
doubleheader split with CS Sacramento on Monday. Fresno State might
have a chance at an NCAA at-large bid; SDSU and BYU probably do not.
I believe that Fresno is a much more consistent team than BYU this year,
but the games will be in Provo. Look for FSU to repeat as WAC Champs.
So, my picks:
Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Florida State, North Carolina State;
West Virginia; Pittsburgh; Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Kansas;
North Carolina-Greensboro; Ohio State, Minnesota; Nevada,
Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State; Old Dominion; Memphis;
South Florida; Kent; Eastern Illinois; Notre Dame; Wichita State;
Delaware; Rider; Stanford, Arizona State, Southern California,
Oregon State, Washington; Tennessee, Louisiana State, Florida,
Mississippi State, Auburn; The Citadel, Western Carolina;
McNeese State; Texas, Texas Christian, Texas Tech; South Alabama,
Southwestern Louisiana, Jacksonville; Southeastern Louisiana;
Santa Clara; Fresno State; Miami (Florida).
That would have the following teams in their first NCAA tournament appearance:
Eastern Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina-Greensboro, Texas Tech.
IMO, Likely top seeds:
Clemson (in Clemson SC), Miami (in Coral Gables FL), Tennessee (in
Knoxville TN), Wichita State (in Wichita KS), Oklahoma State (in
Stillwater OK), Cal State Fullerton (in Austin TX), Georgia Tech (in
Baton Rouge LA), and Ohio State (in Tallahassee FL).
IMO, Likely #2 seeds:
Florida State (in Tallahassee FL), Louisiana State (in Baton Rouge LA),
Texas (in Austin TX), Stanford (in Wichita KS), Arizona State (in
Stillwater OK), Long Beach State (in Knoxville TN), Oklahoma (in
Coral Gables FL), and Nevada (in Clemson SC).

Sorry, Mike, but the NCAA isn't in the habit of rewarding season-long
underachievement. Arizona St. was only a #3 seed in one of the
shallower regionals (seriously, would you rather start off playing a

Clemson, Ohio St, Tennessee, and Oklahoma St. were ranked 1-3-4-5 in
the coaches' poll going into the regionals. However, in a sport like
college baseball these rankings are fairly arbitrary. Florida St,
Fullerton, Georgia Tech, LSU, and Arizona St. were ranked 6-7-8-9-10
and each made it, so it's not as if the system is heavily rigged
against top teams (at least it's pure double-elimination in the
regionals). The only pseudo-longshot to make it was Auburn (#24),
which took out #1 Clemson, with Notre Dame's help.

Arizona St-Oklahoma tonight on ESPN, Heiser. Be there. This should
be an interesting one, a long-awaited matchup against a perennial
power from the perspective of this fan of a longtime baseball wannabe

against the Droods' big bats. Oklahoma should be going with the second
half of their ace LH pitching duo, Kevin Lovingier, and ASU with some
shaky-legged freshman. I was not encouraged by the bullpen performance
from the appropriately-named Bucky Buckles the other night, so perhaps
the pitching depth will come into question...

He wasn't impressive in the opener against LSU. He did hang in there
and win, but LSU's top hitter took him deep, among other early problems.
Wilson should get at least one more start, but FSU is working out of the

Oklahoma 4, Arizona St. 3 in 11 innings last night (Miami eliminates
Auburn, Miami-ASU go tonight). Tremendous ballgame, with much tension
and suspense throughout the late innings, mixed in with the emotions
around the Jim Brock story. For the first time this season Brock was
unable to coach his ASU team from the bench due to his losing battle
with liver cancer. I guess I hadn't fully realized exactly how bad
Brock's condition is, as he appears to be months or even weeks from
death. Under the circumstances it would have been nice to see him
leave with one last CWS title under his belt, but that'll be an uphill
battle now (not to be maudlin about it or to equate Brock's struggle
with a baseball tournament, but it was clear from his own comments
what this last CWS appearance and this team means to him, as well as
to his daughter who was at the game keeping score in his stead).
Terrific performances from both bullpens after each shaky starter gave
up 3 runs over the first few innings before departing. Also some
game-saving, major-league-caliber defensive plays put in on both sides
by ASU LF Billy McGonigle and OU CF Chip Glass. For Oklahoma, Bucky
Buckles, too dumb to be a Drood but Oklahoma-OK athledemically,
redeemed himself with 3 shutout innings in picking up the win. For
ASU, Noah "Luke" Peery was the standout pitcher of the entire game
before OU finally scraped the winning run off him in the 11th without
benefit of a hit. Peery seems to be a bit of a punk with the
sideburns and all that volatile screaming into home plate, but we'll
let it slide; that's college ball and the minor-league vets will beat
that out of him soon enough in pro ball...

Not only is the level of college baseball as low as AA, it's lower.
Much lower. More like mid-A, and definitely not so much as high-A.
Think about it. Sure, you have your college stars, but even most of
those players start in the minors at AA at the highest and usually
struggle there at first. Overall, you're looking at 48 full rosters
for the *good* teams that made the regionals and are fairly close
competitively, which is approximately the number of rosters in all of
AA and AAA baseball combined. 90% of the players in these top-level
college programs have no shot whatsoever at even a minor-league
professional career.

Yeah, but Fullerton was blanked by Tech in the opener, and has scored 2
runs in 2 games against the Jackets this year. (They met at Fullerton
in March). Brad Rigby likely will pitch again against the Titans.
He's 14-4. In his 4 losses (early in the season) he walked 19 batters
in 18 innings. But in his last 6 starts, he is 5-0 with eight walks and
64 strikeouts in 46 innings. The teams haven't all been weak, either;

Both were also sent to the losers' bracket courtesy of eastern/midwestern

That's probably a fair assessment, but it's a one-game shot in the

No, that's very misleading. This isn't a Final 4 with all teams on
equal footing. The #2 and #4 seeds are undefeated having beaten each
of those #7 and #8 seeds. Nothing is vastly out of whack here; no one
is being "disrespected" (especially when you consider that these

Really the only surprise so far is not that the #7 and #8 seeds are

Inspired CWS eastern newcomer Georgia Tech upsets indignant western power
Cal-St. Fullerton, 3-2 in 12 innings on a home run by Red Sox top draft
pick No-mar Gar-ci-a-par-raaaa! Tech's sitting pretty right now, with
two off-days before the final game Saturday.
Garciaparra's is an inspiring story. From humble beginnings as the son
of a Mexican immigrant growing up in a rough-and-tumble California
town, he has taken his college baseball scholarship and will convert it
to a 3.8 GPA at Tech and a career in the major leagues. Oklahoma's
Big-8 Player of the Year Rick Gutierrez (Long Beach) has risen above
similar circumstances...

That little guy Glass actually hit one out (not an inside-the-parker

Hard-throwing lefty Mark Redman was scheduled to pitch for OU in this

What happened? I said the other day I thought Peery was behaving like
a punk. Headhunting?
To my untrained eye Darvin Traylor looks like a very disciplined, smart,
tough hitter. One of those compact but still powerful packages, with a
great batting eye. I thought he had the best idea of what he was doing
of all the OU hitters, even though Glass has probably outperformed him
so far in this series. I wonder if anyone drafted him in the later
rounds as a sleeper.
Unfortunately a VCR malfunction prevented me from seeing any of the
highlights of this game. The totals were 6 runs, 13 hits for OU, 1
run, 7 hits for ASU, so it didn't look like ASU got to Redman too much.
For a 9-IP complete game, 7 hits with only a couple (?) walks is
superlative for college ball. They went all the way with him to save
the bullpen for tomorrow, so it'll be every man save Redman out of that
pen, if necessary, and maybe even Redman for an inning too.
Yes, here's hoping that Jim Brock somehow pulls through. He's a
legend, and deserves to go out only in due time.

Basically, yes. Traylor and Peery were having words while he did his
HR trot. Peery told the ump, like an idjit, that he was gonna hit the
next batter. Then he throws a slow curve that got away from him and
hit the next batter. Deservedly, he gets tossed. Fred Lynn commented
that it was unwarranted since those slow curves can be tough to control
sometimes. Meanwhile, Peery continued his trash talking from the
dugout. The homeplate ump then tells him to leave the stadium and he
wouldn't. Pretty much a sore loser in this case.
Not a bad year for the Droods overall since they weren't expected to do
much.

Oklahoma brings it all back to the ranch with a 13-5 runaway over
Georgia Tech in the CWS final game. Tournament MVP was CF Chip Glass
(I would have went with LHP Mark Redman, myself; Glass was impressive
but there's no substitute for stellar pitching from your staff ace, but
Redman didn't pitch in the final game, and you know how that goes).
This entire CWS postseason has been nothing less than stunning for OU,
as they certainly peaked at the right time with a perfect 8-0 march
through the regionals and finals. Not bad for a team that was unranked
in the pre-season...
I wonder what our ol' friend and big Okie St. hardball fan Cowboy would
have to say about this. After years of waiting for his beloved powerful
'Pokes to finally win the big one, it's suddenly Oklahoma that breaks
through and wins it all for the Big-8 for the first time since 1959.
After all, Oklahoma St. has positively dominated the conference,
winning the Big-8 title *14* straight years, with Oklahoma a perfect
0-10 against them in the conference finals, including a loss in this
season's tourney. But that's baseball, and especially college baseball;
unpredictable as hell...
I gotta get me one a those cornball "25 Men Pulling on the Same Rope"
T-shirts...

Yabbut pitchers are kind of like QBs in football -- 99% of the time a
QB wins the Super Bowl MVP just cause he's the QB.
Nice to see someone else win it -- a regular guy who plays every day

ASU to be quite as good this year as they have been, and Pat Murphy is
a very classy coach (at least I always thought he was when he was at
Notre Dame). He will be a very good replacement for Jim Brock, and
will do a good job at replacing a great coach in a difficult situation.

I may have to retract this. ASU is currently doing what I expected.
They are 10-11 in the Six-Pac, having played not too well in a series
at home against California. UCLA is breathing down their necks to
move into 4th. The Pac-10 will send 4 teams (probably) to the NCAA's
this year; if a northern team should suprise Stanford/Cal/USC in the
Pac-10 playoffs, then ASU probably won't get to go.

| This week marks the beginning of a series of conference baseball tournaments
that take place over the next month, leading up to the NCAA regional hosts
announcement on May 15 and the tourament pairings on May 22. The MEAC tourney
is always first, and it starts Wednesday in Tallahassee.
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
-------------------------------
Northern Division
-----------------
Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks 14- 4 23-22
Coppin State Eagles 12- 6 14-28
Delaware State Hornets 7-11 8-33
Howard Bison 3-15 4-37
Southern Division
-----------------
Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 8- 4 24-17
Florida A&M Rattlers 8- 4 20-22
North Carolina A&T Aggies 2-10 9-43
Above are the unofficial final conference results. The MEAC tournament
begins on Wednesday at Rattler Field in Tallahassee with four games.
First round:
#1 seed Maryland-Eastern Shore, bye
#4 Coppin State 14-28 vs #5 Delaware State 8-33
#2 Bethune-Cookman 24-17 vs #7 Howard 4-37
#3 Florida A&M 20-22 vs #6 North Carolina A&T 9-43
Second round:
(Wednesday) BCC-Howard loser vs FAMU-NC A&T loser
(Thursday) UMES vs Coppin State-Delaware State winner
" BCC-Howard winner vs FAMU-NC A&T winner
The MEAC tournament continues on through Saturday, when a champion will be
crowned (weather permitting). The MEAC tournament champ will play at the
Big South regular season champion the third weekend of May to determine a spot
in the NCAA tournament.
IMO, only Bethune-Cookman can win on the road against the Big South champ.
If UMES or FAMU win the tournament title, I do not believe there will be an
MEAC team in the NCAAs this year. Realistically, the MEAC champion will be
one of these three teams. UMES has a big advantage in that they get the first
round bye, then play either Coppin State or Delaware State in the next round.
Meanwhile, both Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M have to play two games before
potentially meeting UMES, with one of the two games against each other (second
round). UMES should definately have a pitching edge going into the winner's
bracket game of the third round.

| Atlantic Coast Conference
-------------------------
Clemson 17- 1 37- 4 Clemson, FSU are sure to go to
Georgia Tech 10- 2 28- 9 the NCAA tourney. Tech, UNC,
North Carolina 11- 4 29-12 and NCSU will vie for two other
Florida State 8- 3 33- 9 spots. Duke's young pitching
North Carolina State 9- 9 26-16 looked good in non-conference
Wake Forest 5-10 22-17 activity, but no so now.
Duke 4-14 25-18
Maryland 4-14 16-24 Clemson should be slight
Virginia 3-14 16-25 favorite to win College WS.
Atlantic Ten Conference
-----------------------
Massachusetts 11- 3 17- 8 UMass proved themselves as
George Washington 10- 4 17-19-1 vulnerable, losing 2 of 3 to
Rutgers 10- 5 19-19 last place Duquesne this past
St.Bonaventure 7- 5 12-15-1 weekend. Meanwhile, Bonnies won
St.Joseph's 8- 7 17-22 3 straight over WVU to move into
West Virginia 8- 9 14-24 4th place spot. SBU-SJU series
Duquesne 5-12 12-24 should determine last tourney
Rhode Island 3- 8 9-17 spot in A-10. A-10 tourney
Temple 4-13 7-29 winner hosts/beats MAAC champ.
Big East Conference
-------------------
Providence 9- 3 28- 7 Providence, SHU, Villanova,
Seton Hall 7- 3 23- 9 and Pitt will probably be the
Villanova 8- 4 28- 7 Big East tourney teams. Look
Pittsburgh 7- 5 26- 9 for PC and SHU to be in the
Boston College 6- 6 13-15 title game. Villanova still the
Georgetown 4- 8 12-23 nation's 2nd highest scoring
St.John's 3- 7 5-10 team on per game basis.
Connecticut 2-10 5-20-1
Big Eight Conference
--------------------
Oklahoma State 15- 4 35- 7 Oklahoma State leads the nation
Oklahoma 15- 5 26-10 in scoring at 12.24 runs per
Nebraska 8- 7 25-14 game. The Cowboys and Oklahoma
Kansas State 8-10 21-16 should represent the Big Eight
Iowa State 6- 8 14-14 in the NCAA's this year. No
Kansas 5-13 14-27 third straight trip to the NCAAs
Missouri 3-14 12-26 for Kansas this year.
Big South Conference
--------------------
Radford 9- 3 22-16 Radford, already having won 2 of
Winthrop 11- 4 27-13-2 3 against both Winthrop & UNCG,
Liberty 8- 4 24- 9 looks to be favorite to win
No.Carolina-Greensboro 9- 6 24-15 Big South title (no conference
Maryland-Baltimore Co. 6- 6 17-13 tournament here). Winthrop and
Towson State 7- 8 16-18-1 Liberty look to be only other
Coastal Carolina 5- 7 10-14 possibilities, and Flames have
Charleston Southern 5-10 7-12 yet to play Radford or Winthrop.
No.Carolina-Asheville 0-12 9-25 Winner hosts MEAC champ.
Big Ten Conference
------------------
Purdue 10- 6 19-19 Literally anyone could win the
Northwestern 7- 5 21- 8 Big Ten title, and only the
Michigan State 9- 7 17-15 tourney champ goes to the NCAAs
Ohio State 8- 8 19-18 this year from the Big Ten.
Minnesota 6- 6 17-18 No one would have guessed Purdue
Illinois 8- 8 17-22 would be in this position at the
Indiana 7- 9 25-14 half way point, but look for
Iowa 7- 9 19-14 Ohio State (experience) or
Michigan 6- 8 15-21 Northwestern (pitching depth) to
Penn State 6- 8 14-22-1 take the NCAA bid.
Big West Conference
-------------------
Cal State Fullerton 10- 2 35- 6 Fullerton, Long Beach and maybe
Long Beach State 8- 4 21-17-1 Nevada go to the NCAAs this year
Nevada 8- 4 28-10 from BWC. UNLV has already
Nevada-Las Vegas 6- 6 25-15 swept NMSU, and should get the
New Mexico State 5- 7 28-17 fourth spot in inaugural BWC
Pacific 4- 8 23-18 tournament to be held at Blair
Cal-Santa Barbara 4- 8 17-16 Field in Long Beach.
San Jose State 3- 9 16-24-1
Colonial Athletic Association
-----------------------------
James Madison 12- 3 33-12 JMU makes the NCAAs whether as
Richmond 11- 7 28-11 CAA tourney champ or as at large
Old Dominion 7- 5 27-13 team. I used to think CAA would
No.Carolina-Wilmington 8- 7 24-17 send two teams, but does not
George Mason 6- 6 18-17 look likely now that anyone but
East Carolina 5-10 19- 9 JMU can get at large bid. ODU,
William and Mary 2-13 18-21 Richmond, are JMU's big threats.
Great Midwest Conference
------------------------
Alabama-Birmingham 12- 3 26-11 No auto bid for the GMW, but a
Cincinnati 7- 5 18-13 recent surge by UAB could move
Memphis 8- 7 17-19 the Blazers into consideration.
St.Louis 6- 9 16-18 Strength of schedule stops them
Dayton 3-12 5-31 in their NCAA at-large hopes.
Ivy League
----------
Red Rolfe Division
------------------
Yale 9- 3 18-13 Yale hosts Dartmouth this
Dartmouth 6- 6 10-13 weekend, and should sow up the
Harvard 4- 8 6-15 Rolfe Division title, with the
Brown 3- 9 7-20 right to host the Ivy League
playoffs.
Lou Gehrig Division
------------------- Yale should beat Columbia or
Pennsylvania 8- 4 15-15 Penn for the Ivy League title
Columbia 7- 5 12-16-1 which would be its 4th straight.
Princeton 6- 6 13-16 The Elis would then play NEC
Cornell 5- 7 9-14 champ (Rider) in NCAA play-in.
Metro Conference
----------------
Southern Mississippi 7- 2 26-14 Another conference in danger of
South Florida 7- 5 23-18 squandering a sure 2 NCAA bids.
No.Carolina-Charlotte 5- 4 24-15 USM could get an at large bid if
Virginia Tech 5- 4 23-16 they fail to win conference
Tulane 6- 6 26-16 tourney; I'm not sure any other
Louisville 3- 6 14-27 team could. USF, UNCC, VPI are
Virginia Commonwealth 3- 9 16-27 the other tourney threats.
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
----------------------------------
Northern Division
-----------------
Siena 9- 3 15-10 LeMoyne probably is the most
LeMoyne 9- 3 12-10 likely team to come out of this
Canisius 1- 7 8-11 group to play at the A-10 champ
Niagara 1- 7 5-13 in an NCAA play-in series.
Obviously, the Dolphins will be
Southern Division joined by Siena, Iona, and
----------------- Fairfield in the MAAC tourney.
Iona 8- 1 13-13-1 None of the four is likely to
Fairfield 8- 3 14-15-1 beat UMass, Rutgers, or GWU in
St.Peter's 3- 8 9-19 a play-in series, but would have
Manhattan 1- 8 4-27 a chance against St.Bonaventure.
Mid-American Conference
-----------------------
Bowling Green State 10- 2 18-10 WMU finally showed why they were
Central Michigan 9- 4 23- 8 the pre-season favorite to win
Western Michigan 9- 5 20-12-1 the MAC, taking 3 of 4 from Kent
Kent 7- 4 23-10 this weekend at Hyames Field.
Eastern Michigan 8- 5 12-20 BGSU is having second straight
Akron 7- 5 22-12 very strong season, but look for
Ball State 5- 9 12-24 the NCAA bid to go to either CMU
Miami (Ohio) 4- 9 17-20 or WMU. Maybe CMU can garner an
Ohio 4-10 16-17 at large bid if they continue to
Toledo 1-11 7-19 play well in the regular season.
Mid Continent Conference
------------------------
Eastern Division
----------------
Youngstown State 9- 3 19-10 YSU swept 4 from C.W.Post this
Troy State 8- 4 16-15-1 weekend, while Troy State split
New York Tech 5- 3 17-10 with Pace. NY Tech has yet to
Pace 7- 5 15-16-1 meet either; 2 of thse 3 go to
LIU-C.W.Post 2- 6 10-19 MCC tournament.
Central Connecticut St. 1-11 2-19
In Western Division, appears EIU
Western Division and WIU go to conference tourney
---------------- without a struggle. West champ
Eastern Illinois 8- 2 21-12 hosts conference tourney; look
Western Illinois 8- 4 13-10-1 for EIU to win it with right to
Valparaiso 4- 6 14-17 play at Midwestern Collegiate
Chicago State 5- 9 12-17 champ (probably Notre Dame) in
Northeastern Illinois 5- 9 8-22 an NCAA play-in series.
Mideastern Athletic Conference
------------------------------
Northern Division
-----------------
Maryland-Eastern Shore 14- 4 23-22 IMO, only BCC can hope to win
Coppin State 12- 6 14-28 an NCAA play-in series at the
Delaware State 7-11 8-33 Big South champion field.
Howard 3-15 4-37 However, they appear to be the
least likely of the 3 contenders
Southern Division to win the MEAC tourney starting
----------------- Wednesday. UMES, as #1 seed,
Bethune-Cookman 8- 4 24-17 gets first round bye, while FAMU
Florida A&M 8- 4 20-22 hosts this tournament. Look for
North Carolina A&T 2-10 9-43 the Rattlers to win it.
Midwestern Collegiate Conference
--------------------------------
Eastern Division
----------------
Detroit Mercy 4- 0 13-12 Clearly Notre Dame is the best
Wright State 6- 2 19-16 team in the conference, but they
Xavier (Ohio) 3- 5 22-20 are not the overwhelming
LaSalle 3- 5 12-26 favorite to win as they have
Cleveland State 0- 4 7-25-1 been in past years. The Irish
host the conference tournament,
Western Division which should give them the edge
---------------- over UDM to win the right to
Notre Dame 6- 1 23-12 host EIU for an NCAA tournament
Illinois-Chicago 4- 4 15-16 spot. Pencil the Irish in for
Northern Illinois 2- 2 17-16 another regional appearance
Wisconsin-Milwaukee 3- 4 14-11 (though not a regional runner up
Butler 4- 8 17-21 spot that they've been getting.)
Missouri Valley Conference
--------------------------
Creighton 12- 2 25-11 Creighton and Wichita State
Wichita State 11- 5 30- 9 are close to the point where
Evansville 13- 9 20-16 have sown up NCAA at large bids.
Southwest Missouri St. 9- 7 23-11 Evansville at SMSU will also be
Northern Iowa 7- 9 16-16 MVC tourney threats. N Iowa
Indiana State 7-11 20-16 looks to get into the MVC
Illinois State 6-10 15-15-1 tournament for the first time.
Bradley 7-13 14-18
Southern Illinois 4-10 15-18
North Atlantic Conference
-------------------------
Delaware 12- 0 27- 6 Delaware remains the top team
Vermont 9- 3 17- 7 in the league, and remains in
New Hampshire 9- 5 18- 9 Collegiate Baseball's rankings.
Maine 8- 6 14-23 The Blue Hens swept Drexel this
Drexel 6- 5 19-13 past weekend to strengthen their
Northeastern 6- 6 11-10 claim to first. Look for the
Hartford 3- 7 6-14 Hens to be joined by Vermont,
Hofstra 2- 9 17-13 UNH, & Drexel in the NAC tourney
Boston University 0-14 1-26 and then host Navy in play-in.
Northeast Conference
--------------------
Rider 9- 3 20-11 Rider is clearly the class of
Fairleigh Dickinson 8- 4 14-14 this league, and should host
St.Francis (New York) 6- 6 13-11 Yale or Penn in an NCAA play-in
Wagner 6- 6 8-20 series.
Monmouth 5- 7 15-23
Marist 5- 7 8-16-1 FDU and St.Francis are the only
Mount St. Mary's 5- 7 9-17 other possibilities to get to
Long Island 4- 8 6-19 the tournament.
Ohio Valley Conference
----------------------
Middle Tennessee State 10- 2 20-18 OVC tourney hosted by regular
Southeast Missouri St. 8- 4 21-16 season champ, which should be
Morehead State 8- 4 19-19 MTSU (which has already swept
Eastern Kentucky 6- 6 17-20 EKU and SE Missouri). The
Murray State 6- 6 16-22 Blue Raiders should also win OVC
Austin Peay State 5- 7 17-23 tourney and NCAA play-in series
Tennessee Tech 4- 8 18-22-1 at Reese Smith Field against
Tennessee-Martin 1-11 8-27 SWAC champ Southern University.
Pacific Ten Conference
----------------------
Northern Division
-----------------
Washington State 9- 6 17-21 The Pac-10 south champ hosts
Washington 8- 6 14-22 the north champ in the Pac-10
Portland State 8- 6 14-25 playoffs. I doubt the north
Oregon State 6- 7 16-15-1 champ can beat USC, but both
Portland 6- 8 16-17 Cal and Stanford would be
Gonzaga 6-10 20-20 vulnerable.
Southern Division Look for USC to beat Washington
----------------- in the Pac-10 playoffs to gain
California 13- 7 21-18 the automatic bid. Probably
Southern California 13- 8 30-15 three other southern teams and
Stanford 12- 8 22-17 no nothern teams will go to the
Arizona State 10-11 29-15 NCAA tournament.
UCLA 10-11 22-17
Arizona 4-17 17-28-1
Patriot League
--------------
Navy 12- 4 20-15 No conference tourney here. PL
Army 9- 3 13-15 title will be decided the final
Fordham 11- 5 20-15 weekend when Army hosts Navy.
Lehigh 7- 9 13-18 Cadets host Fordham the week
Bucknell 4- 8 9-20 before in another key upcoming
Holy Cross 3- 9 7-20 series. PL champ plays at NAC
Lafayette 2-10 4-24 champ in NCAA play-in series.
Southeastern Conference
-----------------------
Eastern Division
----------------
Tennessee 8- 4 28-10 SEC probably sends five teams
Florida 7- 5 26-14 to the NCAA tournament this year
South Carolina 5- 7 23-16 (if not six). Auburn looks to
Georgia 3- 9 19-19 be the class of league, with
Vanderbilt 2-10 16-19 the strongest starting pitching
Kentucky 2-10 17-21 in the league (yes, including
LSU). Mississippi's series
Western Division victory over LSU this past
---------------- weekend was no fluke; the Rebels
Auburn 11- 1 34- 4 probably will make the tourney
Louisiana State 9- 3 31- 6 this year. Key series this
Mississippi 8- 4 28-10 weekend: Ole Miss at Alabama.
Alabama 8- 4 25-13
Mississippi State 5- 7 24-14
Arkansas 4- 8 26-13
Southern Conference
-------------------
The Citadel 16- 5 29-17 The Citadel has come on strong
Georgia Southern 14- 7 27-15 recently to take over first,
Western Carolina 13- 8 27-16 and plays Western Carolina this
Davidson 11-10 17-22 weekend in their final regular
East Tennessee State 10-10-1 19-22-1 season conference series, while
Appalachian State 10-13-1 15-24-1 GSU plays last place Furman.
Virginia Military 8-13 15-24 SC tournament the following week
Marshall 7-14 9-33 at College Park in Charleston;
Furman 6-15 10-27 The Citadel should win NCAA bid.
Southland Conference
--------------------
Northwestern State 12- 3 28- 9 Regular season champ hosts the
Northeast Louisiana 14- 4 29-12 SLC tournament, making the
Texas-San Antonio 13- 5 26-16 battle between NE Louisiana and
McNeese State 10- 5 27-13 NW State very interesting.
Texas-Arlington 7- 8 17-25 UTSA and McNeese should also
Southwest Texas State 8-10 20-26 make the conference tournament.
Nicholls State 6- 9 20-17 Any of the four could win the
Sam Houston State 5-13 17-28 NCAA bid. McNeese at NE La this
Stephen F. Austin State 0-18 2-33 weekend's biggest series.
Southwest Conference
--------------------
Texas A&M 10- 4 30-13-1 TCU split with Houston this past
Texas Tech 8- 5 35- 8 weekend severly damaged their
Rice 9- 6 29-12 SWC tourney hopes. Texas streak
Texas 10- 8 37-12 of hosting NCAA regionals in
Texas Christian 10- 8 23-19 jeopardy; must finish at least
Baylor 5- 9 21-19 3rd in SWC, and 4-10 record away
Houston 3-15 20-24 from Austin makes that iffy.
Southwestern Athletic Conference
--------------------------------
Eastern Division
----------------
Jackson State 14- 4 18-21 Southern U. is easily the best
Alcorn State 13- 7 18-16 team in the SWAC, and should
Mississippi Valley St. 7-11 10-22 win the SWAC tournament in two
Alabama State 4-16 9-27 weeks. The question is whether
they can go to the OVC champ
Western Division home field and win the NCAA
---------------- play-in series. I suspect they
Southern 18- 2 24- 8 will lose to MTSU there.
Grambling State 12- 8 18-15 Jackson State, Alcorn, and
Prairie View A&M 7-13 7-25 Grambling make up the rest of
Texas Southern 3-17 5-32 the SWAC tournament field.
Sun Belt Conference
-------------------
Jacksonville 17- 4 30-12 USA picked up big sweep this
South Alabama 14- 4 28- 9 past weekend over Lamar, keeping
Arkansas State 14- 4 29-13 Jaguar title hopes alive. SBC
Lamar 11- 7 24-14 regular season champ hosts the
New Orleans 11-10 26-15 conference tourney for auto bid
Southwestern Louisiana 8-10 16-16 to NCAAs. Look for three SBC
Texas-Pan American 7-11 16-29 teams to go to the NCAAs, with
Louisiana Tech 5-13 14-23 those probably being Jax, USA,
Arkansas-Little Rock 4-14 17-22 and Arkansas State.
Western Kentucky 2-16 15-23
Trans America Athletic Conference
---------------------------------
Florida International 18- 3 40- 7 Central Florida has a 27-game
Central Florida 19- 5 38- 8 winning streak, yet still can't
Stetson 16- 8 27-17 make up any ground on first
Florida Atlantic 15- 9 24-21 place Florida International in
Campbell 11-13 21-20 the race for first place and the
Samford 9-12 19-19 right to host the TAAC tourney.
Centenary 7-11 15-21 FAU was swept at Centenary, and
Mercer 7-14 10-25-2 has to finish the season at FIU,
Georgia State 7-14 14-25 so the Owls must beat Charleston
Southeastern Louisiana 6-15 11-22 this weekend to secure TAAC
College of Charleston 5-16 13-22 tournament spot.
West Coast Conference
---------------------
Santa Clara 14- 2-1 25-11-1 Santa Clara very hot, and hosts
Pepperdine 12- 2-1 22-14-1 Pepperdine for four games this
San Diego 11- 7 19-18 weekend in what should decide
Loyola Marymount 7-11 16-26 WCC automatic NCAA bid. There
San Fransisco 4-12 14-27 is no WCC tournament. Probably
St.Mary's 2-16 13-27 both SCU and Waves go to NCAAs.
Western Athletic Conference
---------------------------
Eastern Division
----------------
Brigham Young 9- 1 23-16-1 Looks like it will be another
New Mexico 10- 5 18-22 BYU-Fresno State playoff for the
Grand Canyon 8- 7 14-30 WAC title. SDSU appears to be
Air Force 6- 8 20-13 slumping at the wrong time, as
Wyoming 3- 5 11-21 Fresno State has won 10 straight
Utah 0-10 6-25 games. BYU, mean while, has
their key remaining conference
Western Division series vs New Mexico at home.
---------------- Look for FSU to take the title,
Fresno State 13- 5 31-12 and be the WAC's only NCAA
San Diego State 10- 7 24-15 tournament team this year.
Cal State-Sacramento 8- 9 18-20
Cal State-Northridge 6- 8 19-19
Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo 6- 9 12-21
Hawaii 6-11 24-18
Based on the information above, I would currently forecast these 48 teams as
making the NCAA tournament in May:
Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas State, Auburn, California, Cal State Fullerton,
Central Florida, Central Michigan, Citadel, Clemson, Creighton, Delaware,
Florida, Florida International, Florida State, Fresno State, Georgia Tech,
Jacksonville, James Madison, Long Beach State, Louisiana State, Massachusetts,
Miami (Florida), Middle Tennessee State, Mississippi, Nevada, North Carolina,
Northwestern, Northwestern State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State,
Pepperdine, Providence, Radford, Rice, Richmond, Rider, Santa Clara,
South Alabama, Southern California, Southern Mississippi, Stanford, Tennessee,
Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Wichita State.

Clemson 20- 4 39- 7 Clemson swept Tech at home

Georgia Tech 11- 7 31-15 FSU is at Tech this weekend, and
North Carolina State 12- 9 32-19 desperately need to win at least
Wake Forest 8-10 27-21 one of these games. ACC should

Maryland 4-18 18-30 will be a critical series.
ATLANTIC TEN CONFERENCE
-----------------------
Massachusetts 18- 3 28- 9 In key battle for final playoff
George Washington 13- 7 23-23-1 position, St.Joseph's meets
Rutgers 13- 8 26-24 Duquesne while SBU is at UMass.
St.Joseph's 11- 9 24-26 Sweeps by UMass and Rutgers
St.Bonaventure 9- 8 17-20-1 this week has solidified their
West Virginia 9-12 16-31 respective playoff positions and
Temple 7-14 14-31-1 has knocked WVU from defending
Duquesne 7-16 16-32 its A-10 title. NCAA play-in:
Rhode Island 4-14 11-27 A-10 champ hosts MAAC champ.
BIG EAST CONFERENCE
-------------------
Providence 14- 4 37- 9 In battle for final playoff spot
Seton Hall 11- 6 32-13 St.John's meets SHU Wednesday
Villanova 11- 7 37-12 then hosts PC Sat./Sun., while
St.John's 10- 7 16-13 Pitt plays Tuesday at Georgetown
Pittsburgh 9- 8 30-11 then at BC this weekend.
Boston College 7-11 17-22 St.John's has won 6 straight
Georgetown 4-13 17-30 conference games, including this
Connecticut 4-14 10-25-1 past sweep over Villanova.
BIG EIGHT CONFERENCE
--------------------
Oklahoma 19- 6 33-11 Oklahoma has wrested first place
Oklahoma State 16- 8 36-13 from OSU, taking four of five in
Iowa State 10- 9 22-18 the rivalry this week and moving
Nebraska 11-12 29-19 up in the polls. Kansas can
Kansas State 11-12 25-19 eliminate Missouri from the
Kansas 8-17 17-31 final Big 8 tourney spot with
Missouri 5-16 17-30 two wins this week at Lawrence.
BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE
--------------------
Winthrop 14- 4 32-13-2 When was the last time Winthrop
Liberty 13- 5 31-14 was nationally ranked ? I think
No.Carolina-Greensboro 14- 7 32-17 we know the answer. The Eagles
Radford 12- 6 25-22 play Liberty at Lynchburg this
Maryland-Baltimore Co. 10- 8 22-18 week, and can just about sew up
Towson State 7-11 19-22-1 the title by winning the series.
Charleston Southern 7-14 14-32 Winthrop then closes at UMBC,
Coastal Carolina 5-13 16-32 Liberty at UNCG, and Radford at
No.Carolina-Asheville 2-16 11-31 Coastal Carolina and Towson St.
BIG TEN CONFERENCE
------------------
Northwestern 12- 8 28-11 Literally anyone could win the
Minnesota 11- 9 23-23 Big Ten title, and only the
Ohio State 10-10 27-20 tourney champ goes to the NCAAs
Michigan State 10-10 22-20 this year from the Big Ten.
Purdue 12-12 22-26 Look for Ohio State (experience)
Illinois 12-12 22-28 or Northwestern (pitching depth)
Penn State 11-11 20-26-1 to take the NCAA bid. This week
Iowa 11-13 24-21 has Michigan State at Minnesota
Indiana 9-11 28-19 and Northwestern at Ohio State
Michigan 8-10 19-23 in conference play.
BIG WEST CONFERENCE
-------------------
Cal State Fullerton 15- 3 41- 9 CSUF and Long Beach have
Long Beach State 13- 5 26-19-1 already clinched BWC tourney
Nevada 11- 7 32-14 spots, while Nevada and UNLV
Nevada-Las Vegas 11- 7 30-16 both need either one win or one
New Mexico State 9- 9 32-19 NMSU loss to clinch. Final week
Cal-Santa Barbara 6-12 20-22 of regular season play has UNLV
Pacific 4-14 24-24 at Long Beach, Nevada at SJSU, &
San Jose State 3-15 19-31-1 NMSU at CSUF. Goodbye, Aggies.
COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
-----------------------------
James Madison 14- 4 37-13 JMU makes the NCAAs whether as
Richmond 11- 7 34-13 CAA tourney champ or as at large
No.Carolina-Wilmington 11- 7 21-21 team. ODU at GMU this weekend
George Mason 9- 6 25-19 completes CAA round robin games.
Old Dominion 8- 7 31-15 Richmond and ODU are biggest
East Carolina 5-10 26-20 tourney threats to JMU, with
William and Mary 2-16 20-27 UNC-Wilmington as a darkhorse.
GREAT MIDWEST CONFERENCE
------------------------
Alabama-Birmingham 13- 4 30-14 No auto bid for the GMW, but a
Cincinnati 12- 6 26-17 recent surge by UAB could move
Memphis 11-10 23-23 the Blazers into consideration.
St.Louis 7-13 19-26 Strength of schedule stops them
Dayton 4-14 8-35 in their NCAA at-large hopes.
IVY LEAGUE
----------
Red Rolfe Division
------------------
Yale 13- 7 23-18 Yale split with Brown won Rolfe
Dartmouth 12- 8 16-17 title for Elis, who now host
Brown 7-13 13-26 Penn in Ivy League playoffs.
Harvard 6-14 10-22 Penn clinched Gehrig division in
head-to-head victories over
Lou Gehrig Division Columbia. Elis go for second
------------------- consecutive playoff victory over
Pennsylvania 13- 5 21-18 the Quakers, and home field
Columbia 9- 9 15-24-1 advantage should help Elis to
Cornell 10-10 18-18 Ivy title, and right to meet NEC
Princeton 8-12 14-24 champ (Rider) in NCAA play-in.
METRO CONFERENCE
----------------
Southern Mississippi 11- 4 33-17 UNC-Charlotte won two of three
South Florida 9- 6 28-21 from USM this week, preventing
No.Carolina-Charlotte 8- 7 29-19 the Golden Eagles from clinching
Virginia Tech 8- 7 27-22 first place. Meanwhile, VCU
Tulane 8-10 29-23 shockingly swept Tulane. No
Virginia Commonwealth 6- 9 22-29 conference games this weekend.
Louisville 4-11 15-36
METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Northern Division

Siena 14- 4 27-15 Siena probably is the most
LeMoyne 12- 6 17-18 likely team to come out of this
Canisius 2-10 16-18 group to play at the A-10 champ
Niagara 2-10 11-21 in an NCAA play-in series.
The Saints seem to have more
Southern Division depth in pitching than Iona,
----------------- Fairfield, and LeMoyne for the
Fairfield 13- 5 21-20-1 MAAC tournament. Gaels need to
Iona 9- 6 15-24-1 win two of three from last place
St.Peter's 10- 8 17-24 Manhattan to clinch final MAAC
Manhattan 1-14 5-37 tournament position.
MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE
-----------------------
Bowling Green State 16- 6 26-15 BGSU and WMU went 4-2 this week
Western Michigan 16- 8 27-15-1 in conference play, while CMU
Kent 13- 8 29-14 and Kent went 2-4. BG held onto
Central Michigan 14- 9 30-13 first while WMU leaped over the
Akron 13- 9 29-16 other two into second. Akron's
Eastern Michigan 13-10 17-27 sweep over Miami moved the Zips
Ohio 11-13 24-20 into contention for one of the
Miami (Ohio) 7-16 20-28 four MAC tourney positions.
Ball State 7-17 15-32
Toledo 4-18 13-28
MID CONTINENT CONFERENCE

Youngstown State 12- 4 30-13 With one more week before the
Troy State 13- 6 21-18-1 MCC tournament, YSU and EIU have
Pace 8- 8 19-23-1 clinched conference bids, while
New York Tech 7- 8 21-17-1 it appears that Troy State is
Central Connecticut St. 6-13 11-23 safe as Eastern Division
LIU-C.W.Post 4-11 15-26 runners-up. WIU is trying to
fend off Valparaiso and red-hot
Western Division NE Illinois (9 of last 11) for
---------------- the final MCC tournament spot.
Eastern Illinois 12- 4 25-15
Western Illinois 11- 9 18-17-1 EIU, as tourney host, should
Valparaiso 9- 9 21-24 have the edge to win title, and
Northeastern Illinois 9-11 13-28 should go on to meet Notre Dame
Chicago State 5-13 12-24 in NCAA play-in series.
Mideastern Athletic Conference

Northern Division
-----------------
Maryland-Eastern Shore 14- 4 25-24 After sweeping the MEAC tourney,
*Coppin State 12- 6 17-31 Coppin State proceeded to lose
Delaware State 7-11 10-35 to Georgetown and Maryland in
Howard 3-15 5-38 non-conference play. The Eagles
are now 1-24 in games against
Southern Division non-MEAC teams, and would not
----------------- appear to have much hope in the
Bethune-Cookman 8- 4 28-19 NCAA play-in series at the
Florida A&M 8- 4 24-27 Big South champion home field.
North Carolina A&T 2-10 10-45
MIDWESTERN COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE
--------------------------------
Eastern Division
----------------
Detroit Mercy 8- 2 20-14 Clearly Notre Dame is the best
Wright State 8- 4 24-20 team in the conference, but they
LaSalle 7- 7 21-29 are not the overwhelming
Xavier (Ohio) 4- 8 24-27 favorite to win as they have
Cleveland State 3- 9 12-35-1 been in past years. The Irish
host the conference tournament,
Western Division which should give them the edge
---------------- over UDM. The Irish split 4
Notre Dame 11- 4 35-16 games with NIU this past weekend
Northern Illinois 7- 5 24-21 to hold onto first in west. Key
Illinois-Chicago 5- 7 19-22 series this weekend has NIU at
Wisconsin-Milwaukee 6- 9 18-21 UIC and Wright State at Xavier.
Butler 6-10 22-26
MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE
--------------------------
Creighton 16- 5 30-14 After sweeping CS Fullerton at
Wichita State 16- 8 39-12 home, Wichita State could manage
Southwest Missouri St. 15- 9 31-13 only a split on the road at
Evansville 18-13 27-20 Northern Iowa, while Creighton
Indiana State 11-12 27-17 won 3 of 4 from Bradley. This
Northern Iowa 10-14 23-21 week has SMSU at Creighton and
Bradley 8-16 24-22 Indiana State at Northern Iowa
Illinois State 8-16 20-22-1 in key series for tournament
Southern Illinois 6-15 18-24 positioning.
NORTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE
-------------------------
Delaware 15- 1 35- 8 Delaware remains the top team
Vermont 14- 6 25-12 in the league, and remains as
Northeastern 11- 7 19-13 the most likely NAC champion.
New Hampshire 13- 9 23-14 Vermont won 3 of 4 games from
Maine 10-10 18-30 UNH to strengthen their hold on
Hartford 8-10 11-21 second. Hartford won 3 of 4
Drexel 8-11 24-21 from Drexel, moving them into
Hofstra 5-12 23-17 sixth place (the final playoff
Boston University 1-19 2-33 playoff position).
NORTHEAST CONFERENCE
--------------------
Rider 15- 3 30-14-1 Rider is clearly the class of
St.Francis (New York) 11- 7 22-13 this league, and should host
Fairleigh Dickinson 9- 9 19-20 Yale or Penn in an NCAA play-in
Long Island 9- 9 14-23 series.
Marist 8-10 12-22-1
Wagner 7-11 10-29 SFU is the only other team with
Monmouth 7-11 18-31 a fair possibility to get to the
Mount St. Mary's 6-12 10-25 NCAA tournament.
OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE
----------------------
Middle Tennessee State 14- 3 26-21 MTSU has clinched first seed in
Southeast Missouri St. 11- 6 27-19 OVC and plays at APSU in final
Morehead State 10- 7 25-23 regular season series. MTSU
Eastern Kentucky 9- 8 24-22 will host OVC tourney, & should
Murray State 9- 8 20-26 win it over SE Mo, Morehead, and
Austin Peay State 8-10 23-28 EKU. Also this week: Morehead
Tennessee Tech 6-12 21-28-1 at SE Missouri, Murray at TTU,

Washington 13- 9 19-25 The Pac-10 south champ hosts
Washington State 13-10 23-25 the north champ in the Pac-10
Portland State 12-11 18-30 playoffs. Look for USC to win
Gonzaga 11-13 25-23 and prevent northern division
Portland 10-13 20-22 from sending a team to the NCAA
Oregon State 9-12 19-20-1 tournament.
Southern Division OSU swept doubleheader from
----------------- Washington Sunday to bring UW
Southern California 18- 9 36-17 back to the pack. Meanwhile,
Stanford 17-10 27-20 USC and UCLA won 2-of-3 from
California 15-12 25-23 Cal and ASU, respectively, in
Arizona State 13-14 34-18 positioning for at large berths.
UCLA 12-15 25-22 Key series this week: UCLA-Cal,
Arizona 6-21 20-32-1 WSU-Wash, and Gonzaga-PSU.
PATRIOT LEAGUE
--------------
Navy 16- 4 29-16 No conference tourney here, as
Army 12- 6 21-19 title decided next week when
Fordham 16- 8 29-20 Army hosts Navy. Cadets must
Lehigh 8-12 19-22 win at least three of the four
Bucknell 7-11 14-24 to take title from Midshipmen.
Lafayette 5-13 7-31 Conference champ in NCAA play-in
Holy Cross 4-16 8-29 at NAC champion.

Tennessee 13- 5 37-11 SEC probably sends five teams
Florida 11- 7 31-16 to the NCAA tournament this year
South Carolina 8-10 28-20 (if not six). Auburn looks to
Georgia 5-13 23-24 be the class of league after
Kentucky 4-14 22-27 winning 2 of 3 from Ole Miss
Vanderbilt 4-14 21-23 while LSU lost 2 of 3 to the
Crimson Tide. Auburn at LSU
Western Division this weekend; probably LSU needs
---------------- to sweep in order to have a shot
Auburn 15- 3 42- 6 at the divisional crown.
Louisiana State 12- 6 38-10 Florida at South Carolina in
Mississippi 11- 7 32-15 another big series, as both
Alabama 11- 7 31-17 teams hope for an NCAA at-large
Arkansas 8-10 31-16 bid.
Mississippi State 6-12 27-21
SOUTHERN CONFERENCE

*The Citadel 19- 5 37-19 The Citadel swept through the

Western Carolina 13-11 31-22 for the second straight year,
Davidson 12-12 18-29 both times on their home field
East Tennessee State 11-12-1 25-26-1 in Charleston. The Bulldogs
Appalachian State 10-13-1 17-30-1 become the first team to clinch
Virginia Military 10-14 19-28 a spot in this year's NCAA
Marshall 9-15 12-38 tournament. GSU, WCU unlikely
Furman 9-15 14-28 to enter as NCAA at-large teams.
SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE

Northwestern State 16- 5 33-13 Regular season champ hosts the
Texas-San Antonio 16- 5 33-17 SLC tournament, making this
Northeast Louisiana 15- 5 31-16 weekend's games critical.
McNeese State 11- 9 32-17 NE Louisiana meets UT-Arlington,
Texas-Arlington 11- 9 23-29 NW State faces UT-San Antonio,
Southwest Texas State 10-14 23-31 and Nicholls is at McNeese St.
Sam Houston State 10-14 22-32
Nicholls State 8-13 23-23

Rice 13- 8 37-14 A possibility top four teams
Texas A&M 13- 8 35-17-1 will all go to the tourney this
Texas 14-10 41-14 year, but last year's snub of
Texas Tech 12- 8 41-11 Texas Tech leaves all four in
Texas Christian 10-11 26-25 jeopardy. None can afford to
Baylor 7-13 25-24 finish poorly. No SWC activity
Houston 5-16 24-27 this week; UT goes to Norman.
SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

*Jackson State 14- 4 23-22 For the second straight year
Alcorn State 13- 7 19-18 Jackson State beat Southern U.
Mississippi Valley St. 7-11 10-23 in the SWAC tournament final.
Alabama State 4-16 10-27 Is JSU good enought to get to
the NCAA tournament ? That
Western Division probably depends on who will
---------------- represent the OVC in the NCAA
Southern 21- 3 29-12 play-in series. Should MTSU or
Grambling State 14- 8 21-18 SE Missouri win there, I would
Prairie View A&M 7-15 7-27 think that Jackson State would
Texas Southern 4-20 6-37 have little chance.
SUN BELT CONFERENCE
-------------------
Jacksonville 19- 5 33-16 5 of 6 tourney spots decided, as
South Alabama 17- 7 34-13 Jacksonville, USA, ASU, Lamar,

Brigham Young 17- 4 31-19-1 Looks like it will be another
New Mexico 15- 6 23-23 BYU-Fresno State playoff for the
Grand Canyon 8-10 14-36 WAC title. Cougars lost 2-of-3
Wyoming 7-11 14-29 to UNM at home to keep Lobos
Air Force 8-13 23-17 alive. UNM at Utah during week,
Utah 1-12 7-29 then UNM at Wyoming at BYU-Utah

Western Division swept SDSU and needs only one
---------------- win this weekend at Northridge
Fresno State 17- 7 36-15 to clinch Western Division crown
Cal State-Northridge 12-11 26-23 and right to host WAC playoffs.
San Diego State 11-12 27-20 Bulldogs may be only WAC team to

North Carolina 12- 8 33-17 clinching the ACC regular season
North Carolina State 12- 9 32-19 title for Clemson. The Jackets
Wake Forest 9-11 28-22 host N.C.State this weekend, and
Virginia 8-15 24-26 would look very good for NCAA
Duke 4-17 29-23 status with a series victory.
Maryland 4-20 19-35 UNC 1 vs Wake, 3 FSU remaining.

Villanova 14- 7 40-14 this past weekend, knocking the
Pittsburgh 12- 9 33-13 Red Storm out of the Big East

Boston College 8-13 21-24 starts May 16, with PC meeting

Oklahoma 19- 6 36-11 OU and OSU seem to be sure locks
Oklahoma State 16- 9 37-14 for the NCAAs, but any other
Iowa State 12-11 24-21 team would have to win the Big 8
Nebraska 12-12 30-19 tourney to get a bid. Missouri
Kansas State 12-12 26-20 has been eliminated from tourney
Kansas 9-17 20-31 possibilities, leaving the other
Missouri 6-19 18-33 6 to battle it out in two weeks.

Winthrop 15- 6 33-15-2 winning 2 of 3 from Winthrop
No.Carolina-Greensboro 14- 7 32-17 this past weekend. The Flames
Maryland-Baltimore Co. 13- 8 25-19 hold the tie-breaker over both

Purdue 12-12 22-26 a bid yet, although Minnesota
Penn State 11-11 21-27-1 and OSU took giant steps by
Illinois 12-12 22-29 sweeping MSU & NW respectively.
Indiana 11-13 30-21 Final week's activity has:
Iowa 11-13 27-22 Indiana at Purdue, Minn at NW,

Cal State Fullerton 18- 3 45- 9 Big West tourney this weekend
Long Beach State 16- 5 30-19-1 at Blair Field in Long Beach CA
Nevada 12- 9 34-16 pits CSUF vs UNLV and Nevada at
Nevada-Las Vegas 11-10 32-19 CS Long Beach. The Titans are
New Mexico State 9-12 32-22 a sure NCAA team, with LB also
Cal-Santa Barbara 8-13 22-24 a very likely choice. Nevada
Pacific 5-16 26-26 may be on the bubble and needs a
San Jose State 5-16 21-33-1 strong showing to go at large.
Colonial Athletic Association
-----------------------------
James Madison 14- 4 37-13 JMU probably makes the NCAAs
George Mason 11- 6 28-21 as CAA champ or at large team;
Richmond 11- 7 36-13 Richmond appears to be only
No.Carolina-Wilmington 11- 7 29-19 other at large possibility. ODU
Old Dominion 8- 9 31-17 remains next biggest tournament
East Carolina 5-10 28-20 threat, despite recent slump,
William and Mary 2-16 21-27 because of pitching potential.
Great Midwest Conference
------------------------
Cincinnati 15- 6 29-18 Cinci swept UAB in Birmingham,
Alabama-Birmingham 13- 7 32-17 and needs only one win over UAB
Memphis 12-11 25-25 this weekend at home to clinch
St.Louis 7-13 20-27 regular season title. No NCAA
Dayton 5-15 9-37 hopes for any team here.

Yale 13- 7 23-20 Penn won two games at New Haven
Dartmouth 12- 8 19-17 Saturday, both by 6-5 scores
Brown 7-13 14-27 over Yale, to win Ivy crown.
Harvard 6-14 10-23 Tim Henwood HR in bottom of 9th
won game one, while Yale FR
Lou Gehrig Division Peter Bogue was doubled off 2nd

*Pennsylvania 13- 5 23-18 in ninth in game 2 to give Penn
Cornell 10-10 20-19 league title, and right to meet
Columbia 9- 9 15-24-1 NEC champ on the road in an NCAA
Princeton 8-12 15-26 play-in series.
Metro Conference

Southern Mississippi 11- 4 34-19 USM can clinch regular season
South Florida 9- 6 29-21 title with one win from VPI this
No.Carolina-Charlotte 8- 7 29-19 weekend. After dropping 2 of 3
Virginia Tech 8- 7 28-22 in non-conference activity this
Tulane 8-10 29-23 past week, the Eagles' at large
Virginia Commonwealth 6- 9 22-31 hopes are fading. Probably only
Louisville 4-11 16-36 tourney champ gets NCAA bid.
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference

Northern Division
-----------------
Siena 14- 4 28-15 MAAC tournament this weekend in
LeMoyne 12- 6 19-19 Colonie, NY, has Siena vs Iona
Canisius 7-11 21-20 and Fairfield vs LeMoyne. Gaels
Niagara 3-15 14-26 earned final playoff spot this
week by sweeping Manhattan, but
Southern Division will have tough time with Saints
----------------- and Tim Christman, who leads the
Fairfield 13- 5 21-20-1 country in K's per 9 innings
Iona 12- 6 20-25-1 pitched. Siena probably will
St.Peter's 10- 8 18-24 take tourney title, to meet A-10
Manhattan 1-17 5-42 champ in NCAA play-in series.
Mid-American Conference
-----------------------
Bowling Green State 19- 7 29-16 With one week in regular season
Kent 17- 8 35-14 play, surprising Bowling Green
Central Michigan 17-10 35-14 maintains the conference lead
Western Michigan 17-11 29-19-1 they have held all season. Kent
Eastern Michigan 16-11 20-29 moved into second, and with
Akron 14-12 31-20 Mike Nartker and Dan Ferrell as
Ohio 14-14 29-21 perhaps the top 2 MAC hurlers,
Miami (Ohio) 8-19 21-31 could get the conference tourney
Ball State 7-21 15-36 title. This week has Ohio-BGSU,
Toledo 5-21 16-32 WMU-EMU, Kent-CMU, and BSU-Akron
Mid Continent Conference

Youngstown State 16- 4 35-15 Red-hot Youngstown State swept
Troy State 13- 6 21-21-1 another conference opponent,
Pace 10-10 21-26-1 this time New York Tech, to wrap
Central Connecticut St. 7-13 14-25 up the Eastern Division crown.
New York Tech 7-13 22-22-1 They are probably co-favorites
LIU-C.W.Post 6-13 17-29 with host Eastern Illinois to
win the conference tournament.
Western Division YSU opens with Western Illinois,

Eastern Illinois 15- 5 28-16 Troy State in the opening round
Western Illinois 12-10 19-19-1 of the Mid-Con tournament.

Delaware State 7-11 10-37 Johns Hopkins, and split with
Howard 4-14 5-38 Norfolk State since sweeping the
MEAC tournament. The Eagles are
Southern Division 1-24 against Divison I teams
----------------- outside the MEAC, and would not
Bethune-Cookman 8- 4 29-19 appear to have much hope in the
Florida A&M 8- 4 24-27 NCAA play-in series at the

LaSalle 5- 9 15-35 Xavier, allowing the Muskateers
Cleveland State 4-12 13-41-1 to edge into the MCC tourney to
play host Notre Dame Saturday.
Western Division Other first round MCC tourney
---------------- matchups have UDM vs UIC and
Notre Dame 11- 4 37-19 Wright State vs NIU. Notre Dame
Northern Illinois 9- 7 27-25 should be considered favorites,
Illinois-Chicago 7- 9 21-26 but the Titans have been playing
Wisconsin-Milwaukee 6- 9 21-24 very well lately.

Missouri Valley Conference

Creighton 18- 6 32-15 Wichita State swept SIU while
Wichita State 20- 8 45-12 Creighton won 2 of 3 from SMSU,
Southwest Missouri St. 16-11 32-15 setting up their series this
Evansville 18-13 29-21 weekend in Wichita for the MVC
Indiana State 15-12 31-17 title. In other big series for
Bradley 11-17 28-23 playoff positioning, Bradley is
Northern Iowa 10-18 26-25 at SMSU, N Iowa at SIU, and
Illinois State 9-19 22-27-1 Indiana State at Illinois State.
Southern Illinois 6-19 19-28 6 teams go to MVC tourney.

Drexel 11-12 28-23 Drexel moved into the playoffs
Maine 11-13 20-35 by going 3-1 in the NAC this
Hartford 10-12 14-25 past week, and Maine got the

Marist 10-11 14-24-1 years old, into NEC tourney.
Mount St. Mary's 9-12 13-25 Marist meets Rider in 1st round.
Fairleigh Dickinson 9-12 20-24 Rider is the class of the league
Wagner 9-12 15-30 and should win; SF NY is only
Monmouth 8-13 19-33 other team with a possibility.

Southeast Missouri St. 14- 6 30-19 this weekend at Reese Smith Fld,
Eastern Kentucky 12- 8 28-23 and probably should be the
Morehead State 10-10 28-26 favorites to win, but SE Mo just
Murray State 10-10 21-28 swept Morehead at home, and have
Austin Peay State 9-12 24-32 the league's hottest pitcher in
Tennessee Tech 8-13 23-29-1 David Michel. MTSU-Morehead and
Tennessee-Martin 2-18 13-35 SE Missouri-EKU in 1st round.

Washington 14-12 22-28 in Seattle to take division lead
Oregon State 13-13 23-21-1 into final week. Cougars host
Portland State 13-14 19-33 Oregon State while Washington is
Gonzaga 13-14 27-24 at Gonzaga in activity on the
Portland 11-15 21-24 weekend to determine northern
division champion. Meanwhile,
Southern Division Cal's sweep of UCLA at home
----------------- highlighted a 5-0 week which
Southern California 18- 9 36-18 may have vaulted the Bears off
Stanford 17-10 28-20 the bubble and into the NCAA
California 18-12 30-23 tournament. Either USC or
Arizona State 13-14 34-18 Stanford will claim the southern
UCLA 12-15 25-22 division this week, and will
Arizona 6-21 20-32-1 host the north champ next week.

Lehigh 11-13 23-23 travel to the NAC champion's
Bucknell 11-13 19-27 home field in an NCAA play-in
Lafayette 6-18 9-36 series, and would probably be

Tennessee 15- 6 41-12 Even bigger than the key western
South Carolina 11-10 31-20 division series last week was
Florida 11-10 31-19 S Carolina's sweep of Florida in
Georgia 7-14 25-26 Columbia. If the SEC sends 6
Kentucky 5-16 23-29 teams to the NCAA's, this may
Vanderbilt 5-16 22-26 help boost USC over the Gators
for the last bid. Meanwhile,
Western Division Auburn won 2 of 3 from LSU in
---------------- Baton Rouge in a series in which
Auburn 17- 4 45- 7 neither team looked to have a
Louisiana State 13- 8 41-12 decent pitching staff. Big

Southwest Texas State 10-14 23-31 NW State will meet UTA and

Southern 21- 3 29-12 play-in series. Should MTSU or
Grambling State 14- 8 21-18 SE Missouri win there, I would

Texas Southern 4-20 6-37 have little chance.

Florida Atlantic 17-13 26-28 starting Thursday at the

Campbell 12-18 26-28 Probably FIU and UCF go to the
Georgia State 11-17 20-31 NCAA tournament regardless of
Southeastern Louisiana 10-18 17-31 TAAC tourney results, but FAU &

Loyola Marymount 12-15 22-31 SCU's at large hopes are fading

Air Force 8-14 27-20 and plays 6 WAC games this week,
Utah 4-15 12-33 3 at AFA during the week, then
hosting GCU on the weekend. UNM
Western Division is at AFA this weekend. BYU has

Fresno State 19- 8 38-16 Meanwhile, Fresno State has won
Cal State-Sacramento 14-12 25-25 the western division crown and
Cal State-Northridge 13-13 27-26 will host either UNM or BYU for

| UMass won the A-10 baseball tournament this past weekend,
beating Rutgers, 10-9; St.Bonaventure, 13-5; and Rutgers again, 10-3.
Nelson Ubaldo was the tournament MVP.
UMass will host Siena College, MAAC champ, starting Thursday, in a
best of three series for a spot in the NCAA tournament. Siena won
the MAAC tournament by defeating Iona, 14-2, and Fairfield twice,
9-0 and 14-0, to win the title.
UMass beat Siena earlier this year in Amherst, 12-2, but Siena was
pitching their #4 pitcher (I believe). This time the Saints will
lead off with sophomore Tim Christman, who leads the nation in K's
per nine innings pitched. Should be an interesting series.

| > ASU doesn't deserve a spot this year, even if they get one.
Well, they did beat up on the likes of Southern Utah, St.Francis,
Grand Canyon, etc., in the pre-conference season, and started out
something like 7-2 in the conference, but ended up 13-17 in the
Pac-10 and were swept last weekend at home by Stanford (first time
that has ever happened). ASU probably gets in if USC beats WSU
this weekend; if Washington State pulls the upset, they probably
don't go.
WSU, at 28-28, probably won't win it, but they have one pitcher
(Kyle Kawabata, 11-2), who gives them a good chance. One other upset,
and there goes ASU.

Did anyone catch the score of a game out East yesterday. I picked it up
off of ESPN but do not remember the names.
St.somebody 71
X?? 1
Game called in the 4th 52 unearned runs

The winning school was St. Francis, during the second inning of the
game the St. Francis coach asked the Robert Morris coach if he wanted
to stop the game. The Robert Morris coach said he would let him know
when he wanted to end the game. So St. Francis wasn't trying to rub
it in, out of the 71 runs something like 55 were un-earned. This is
Robert Morris 2nd year of Division 2 baseball, last year they were
0-30.

Actually, they were 1-30 last year; this loss made them 0-7 this year.
Also note that this was St.Francis of Illinois (not NY or PA). They
are actually a decent Division II team.

Couldn't have been a better finish if CBS had scripted it....
Wow!

The ending of the CWS was destiny. How many times do we see it
over and over again. Joey got hurt earlier in the year and missed 40
games with a broken hand, doesn't have all of his strength back and
hasn't hit a home run all year long. Then bang, a two run HR with
two outs to win the game. Nothing better in Sports then seeing
something like that happen.

| This series reminded me that baseball can actually be a decent game. The
ending was right outta _Hoosiers_ or the like.
But I must say, that aluminum bat bothers me being a fan o' the ol' wood
ones. I mean, "He got good metal" doesn't exactly stir the soul.
And I have one question? How did they figger his home run with a guy on
was worth 2 points?

Wouldn't that be two questions 8^)
There were going to award him three points for his style around the
bases, but the Lithuaian judge denegraded his score because his hair
was too long.

| As billte mentioned in the Big East (yawwwwn) note UNH is
threatening to drop baseball from their collegiate sports
program. One of Merrimack Legion's allumni, Brian Georges,
is currently in his third year of a full boat to UNH. What
happens to the scholarships, like Brian's, already promised?

| Well, he'll have to read the fine print. If his scholarship is dependent
on the program continuing, could be trouble.
In any case if he's 3rd year, he has 1/2 of his baseball ahead of him. He
could either transfer to a new school that will give him a scholarship or
if he's really good he could go pro.
If he wants to go pro and finish school full time he could play a couple
seasons of short season A ball. Or he could finish his 3rd year, go pro,
play one season of short season A ball, do the 1st half of his senior year
in the fall, go to spring training, then finish school the following fall.
Another choice might be a season of Cape Cod league during the summer then
go pro and do short season A ball after graduation.

I'm positive that the scholarship will be honored, but what's a
kid who wanted to play fairly major college ball while going to
school supposed to do? Sure, he can transfer, but doing so
involuntarily is still a major disruption to his life.
As I told billte last night, for the state university to drop its
baseball program borders on the un-American. Among others, Carlton
Fisk played at UNH for a brief stint.
I met UNH's coach and some of his players at a rest stop in New Jersey
last year on my way home from spring training in Florida (they were
playing a tourney in Maryland). Very nice guy, and very enthusiastic
about what he was doing. It's a shame...

It's low "A". They only play a half-season in the summer, not the
spring. The New York-Penn League is an example...

It'd be unheard of for them not to honor his scholarship.
Usually even if a kid quits the program and not vice versa
they get to keep their scholarships. The stated goal is for
the kid to get an education and that's supposed to come first.
This is typical hick ass New Hampshire, though.

| No, it happened in NH and I'm ashamed that it did but it's a trend that
has hit Boston University, Brown and quite a few schools. This is
definitely nasty people doing nasty things. The people doing it are
usually unaccountable, anonymous (not anymore) and have self-serving
agendas.

| re: .278
Short A ball is not exactly low A...actually it really depends on
the organization. For instance, the Rangers last season had three
Class A teams, one of them being the Hudson Valley Renegades. And
the break down went like this:
Florida State League (Rangers) - High A
South Atlantic League (Charleston Riverdogs) - Low A
New York Penn League (Hudson Valley Renegades) - Short A
But some organizations don't have three Class A teams. As a
matter of fact, the Rangers have been reduces to only two A teams
for the upcoming season...and I donno what they'll be called. They'll
have only the Florida State League Rangers and one team in the Appy
League. The FSL will remain high A I'm sure, and the Appy League
team will probably be considered short A.
Bottom line here was summerized well in one of the previous
replies...short A is just that...a short season Class A ball which
starts after the June draft and ends toward the end of August.

| It sort of appears that short season A ball is about the same quality or
level as "Low A ball", the difference being that "Low A ball" runs the full
minor league season and is the next step after rookie league or winter ball
for guys who don't go to college where as short season A ball is there to
increase capacity when school ends.
The regular minor league season runs from the end of spring training to
the end of August while "Short Season A Ball" seems to run from about the
time school lets out in May to the end of August.
The guys who pass those tests and go pro full time finally meet in "High A
Ball" then move on to AA, AAA and so forth.

| If towns like Lynn and Nashua are willing to support "low" A ball
independently I'm sure the mlb teams will be glad to let them and
purchase those who develop for their own A teams. Two players come to
mind: Musial and Bob Lemon. The first was a pitcher who couldn't make
it and had a retry at outfield. Lemon was a second baseman in the
majors who then became a HOF pitcher.
In those days they had plenty of minor leagues to give any good athlete
who could play a little ball a fair chance to develop. Today baseball
probably misses a lot of potential prospects because they don't have
places to put iffy prospects. College is not the place either. The
Caribbean area has enough teams and the weather to allow the late
bloomers to develop and therefore the disproportionatlely large numbers
of mlb players from those areas.

12.286 | | CLUSTA::MAIEWSKI | Braves, 1914 1957 1995 WS Champs | Fri Feb 07 1997 16:59 | 47 |
| For the most part the major league clubs already own the rights to the
players on the Low A ball teams. The teams themselves might be separately owned
but they sign contracts for with big league clubs for players and after spring
training and throughout the year the big league clubs "designate for
assignment" players to fill out the rosters of those teams.
Today most major league clubs have contracts with and own the players of:
# Level (e.g Red Sox Franchise)
- ----- -----------------------
1 Major League Club Boston Red Sox (American League)
1 AAA Club Pawtucket Red Sox (International League)
1 AA Club Trenton Thunder (Eastern League)
1 High A ball club Sarasota Red Sox (Florida League)
1 Full Season Low A ball club Michigan Battle Cats (Midwest League)
1 Short Season Low A ball club Lowell Spinners (New York-Penn League)
1 Rookie or Club Ft. Myers Red Sox (Gulf Coast League)
In addition there are independent leagues who's teams are not affiliated
with major league clubs like the team in St Paul where Strawberry played the
1st half of the '96 season.
One glitch is that there are 5 full season A ball leagues but the numbers
don't add up right to divide them into High and Low a ball. Some leagues seem
to be strictly High A ball and some low but one league seems to be used by some
teams for different purposes. The full season A ball leagues and how they were
used last season are:
- Florida - High A ball
- Carolina - High A ball
- California - Both high and low
- Midwest - Low A ball
- South Atlantic - Low A Ball
Most teams seem to have their High A ball team in the Florida or Carolina
and their other team in one of the other three but Seattle only had their
two A ball teams in the California and Midwest. Of course there is no reason
a club can't use one of the lower leagues as their High B ball team. Only
down side would be a bit less competition to help their guys develop.
A couple things to note, first some shuffling goes on each year as minor
league contracts expire and teams change major league team affiliation. Also
the contract between MLB and the association which controls the minor leagues
is almost up and there is speculation that there may be changes including a
decrease in the number of minor leagues per major league club.

| I read a comment that the UNH Baseball team had to be denied a team
because UNH does not have a Softball diamond and therefore no softball
team but would have to build and start one in order to continue having
baseball.
Come to think of it why couldn't they just start a women's baseball
team. Glenn's got a team that'd be glad to play'em.
