| Good a place as any. Does anyone know how the 38 Special got its designation
".38" in light of its diameter being .357?
I would like some references, please, because a friend and I are having a
"discussion" about this, and I don't want buy him a a six-pack of root beer :-)

Hi,
Like most current cartridges, this 38 cal. has it's roots in the past
when they were first developed. The designation goes back to the old 38
Colt I believe, where the real cartridge/bullet cross sectional
measurement was .38 inches.
Someone with a reloading manual handy can check this out,for me,but
this is my story, and I'm stick'n to it.

the "old" .38's were a heel type bullet where the heel was .38
inches. the frontal diameter was the same as it is today (.357).
Sorry, that's from memory. No sources off the top of my head.
