980.341Fred's M1D ?ZEKE::SMITHWed May 21 1997 14:2023

     Fred,

      Was reading this whole string while passing time waiting for my
     CMP M1 to arrive and was ineterested in you note 980.328 on the M1D.

     Do you still have this?
     Did you find any more info on it?
     How does it shoot?

     Interesting piece.... I'm in the CMP M1 Lottery where they are
     drawing 200 names / month until the supply is depleted.

     At $1,025 though I have mixed emotions... Even though a DCM M1D is
     probably worth almost twice that. That would be a big chunk out of
     my family budget....

      So, if you still have your M1D how about a report...?

        Thanks,

          George

    Mr. Smith:

    if you manage to pull up a winning ticket in the 'D lottery and decide
    you don't want it..

    bss::proctor_r will be *more* than happy to mortgage his soul to pay
    for it.. (and prob'ly sell a few pieces to finance the expedition).

    remember: I asked first.

980.343like investment? :-)ZEKE::SMITHWed May 21 1997 16:4117

     I've wondered how many they have and if they are building them
    up from standard garands as we speak...?

     They only say 200/month until the supply is gone?

     Even if they were building them now I guess an M1D with original
    papers is still an M1D with oroginal papers. I've read in Canfield's
    book on collecting M1'a that the D is the most difficult to determine
    if they are original arsenal built or homeshop fabricated..

     Definately the most awsome sight of a rifle regardless of origin..

     Maybe a call to the CMP is in order to get the scoop here..

       Geo-

    re M1D

    The thing weighs a ton. Pity the poor slob that had to pack one of
    those across Europe or Korea. I think they used mostly '03's in
    Europe, though, and I know one former grunt that packed a P-17 across
    Korea, back, and back again.

    I've been going to order Scott Duff's books on collecting Garands and
    see if they say anything. All of the parts on mine are "authentic",
    but they seem almost new. The only clue is, as I think I've mentioned,
    I can't find any markings at all on the barrel. If what I've been told
    is true, then that would make it one of the M1D's that the Army
    reconditioned for Vietnam using barrel blanks purchased from Remington.
    Also of someone cut the top handguard down to mount the scope they
    went to a _lot_ of trouble to hide it.

    They were never used because, 1)heavy 2)"boinging" clip 3)Winchester
    70 (Army) and Remington 700 (Marines) were more accurate.

    I don't know about the accuracy. I fired it a few times and stuck it
    in my gun safe. It needs a bedding job if it is ever going to be used
    for shooting.

    The M1D's from DCM are supposed to be "original" Military issue.
    However, in my search for information, the head of the "Springfield
    Museum" told me that there are no serial numbers or anything that
    really distinguishes a regular M1 from an M1D others than the
    "paperwork". All M1D's are of the rack M1's with "add-ons".

    fred();
980.345ZEKE::SMITHWed May 21 1997 17:2911

     I believe the Canfield book on M1's also says that about the
    serial numbers. If I get a chance tonight I'll see what he says
    about the barrel markings ect.

     Fulton Armorys web site has a pointer to the Garand Collectors
     association and lots of other good info on M1, M1A M1 Carbine
     AR-15 ect..
