Try Heyday' by 'The Church'. It's been one of my favourite albums
since it's release in 1985 and was recommended as a HiFi test CD by one
of the UK mags in their December issue - sorry, can't remember which
    one though.

4116.13Some good disks for sampling various aspects of sound systemsSSDEVO::THOMPSONPaul Thompson, Colorado SpringsMon Apr 28 1997 19:438
Chesky's "Ultimate HiFi test disk" (Or Ultimate something, Track three is
the greatest version of "Spanish Harlem" your likely to hear.)

Flim and the BB's - "Big Notes" - (Check out the track "FunHouse")

Roger Water's "Amused to Death" - Good to check out imaging capabilities.
Uses "Qsound" to get surround sounds from two channels.

I worked in a couple of audio shops back in the '70s & '80s before
coming to Digital. CD players were just starting to hit the market.
The most dynamic CD I used for demonstrations(on the label was a warning
about the dynamic range and for the user to be sure his speakers could
handle it) was Also Sprach Zarathustra(sic)- 2001:A Space Odyssey. Very
brutal on lesser speakers and could hear the signal clipping from
    several entry-level CD players.

I believe the CD described in -1 is the Telarc "Time Warp" title. In
addition to the previously described elements, it has several theme
songs to science fiction movies. Most of the clipping probably happens
during the opening track. Telarc has another similar title as well.

    Cheers,
