    Please, no laughter- I'm looking for a source for proprietary
    Heathkit part numbered transistors for my AR15 receiver, or for
    a pointer to a cross-reference to generic 2Nxxx type numbers.
    
    Even better would be an AA15 or an AR15 with a good FM tuner 
    section for parts.

    If you have the original "assembly" book, both the Heath number and a
    more generic number are usually listed.  If not, please list the
    numbers you do have here.  What transistors need replacement, the
    outputs or others?

    the xref books usually list the heath numbers as well.. 
    
    give us the numbers and the generic specs and we should be able to

    ref: last two- yes, I have all that info but not on me. I wasn't 
    prepared to see such a rapid response in a "dead" notes file.

    Here, per the AR15 Manual (copyright 1967) are the parts I am
    interested in:
    
    Q305	HEATH P/N 417-133	Type="40245"
    Q309, Q310	          417-83	     "L842"
    
    The symptom is that in its old age the tuner has gone deaf. I can get
    (if the "stereo only" switch is off- otherwise nothing) three or four
    stations below 94 or 95 MHz, nothing above that frequency, ever. The
    signal strength meter and the center-tune meter never move. The
    components I'm looking for are the IF amp, AGC amp, and meter amp.
    
    When the book was published, they were in the $.50- $2.00 price range,
    so my original plan was to throw 'em in and see what happens. If these
    are now priceless antiques, I will undertake to refine my
    troubleshooting. (Nearby passive components haven't gotten much
    scrutiny yet either.)
    
    Barring 30 years' deterioration of various switch contacts in the
    controls, the rest of the receiver works fine. (Same for the TEAC A6010
    reel-to-reel tape, Sony TTS3000 turntable, and Rabco SL8E arm. Good
    things when they were new: "audiophile" quality then, now probably
    mid-fi. Mechanically very nice, and pleasant to handle and look at. So
    am I showing my age, or what?)

    The parts cross as follows:
    
    417-133 crosses to an ECG 128 (2SC1008 is one example)  Cost:  < $1.00
    417-83  crosses to an ECG 108 (Don't have example but guess cost < $1.00
    
    I personnaly have 2SC1008s and I'll check for the other tonight.

    For the more generic case...
    
    There are a number of reference books available for cross reference
    purposes.  The two most common are ECG (a Philips comnpany) and SK
    (which I belive is associated with RCA).  These manuals cross reference
    a number of more common semiconductors with their generic replacement.
    
    I have also found that a distributor (Dalbani out of Florida) also
    provides a reverse reference for some of the more common ECG numbers.
    
    A word of caution:  While most generic substitutes will work in most
    circuits, there are times when the exact replacement is required for
    proper operation.
