1322.0. "Sounds of a gym" by PEAKS::WOESTEHOFF () Tue Mar 18 1997 18:19

A few days ago, after I finished a good weight workout in the early morning,
I was doing my cooldown stretching. I wasn't sore at the time but I knew I
probably would be in a couple of hours. It felt wonderful knowing that I had
a great workout. In the background, I could hear the humming of some
exercise bikes, plates clanging against each other, the rythmic thumping of
a persons feet on the treadmill, the attendant instructing some new members
in the backgruound and a guy groaning as he tried to bench press, what for
him, was a heavy weight. Ah, the sounds of a gym, the sounds of peole
working hard to improve their health, increase their strength, improve their
looks or just to have fun. I realized that I really liked those sounds. Now,
don't get me wrong, I wouldn't go out and buy a CD of people working out and
listen to it in my car. But while I'm in the gym, while I'm serious about
making progress in my development, I love those sounds. It's just all part
of the atmosphere and for some reason, it helps to motivate me. I feel the
same way when I'm running a big hill with some friends and I can hear the
deep breathing and know that everyone is doing their best to keep up with
the pace. I love those sounds.

When I go into some other gyms in town, they play Rock n Roll or some other
music, sometimes loud and sometimes just as background music. Some people
wear headsets and when I say something or ask them a question, I have to wait
until they take off their headset. I know a lot of people really like it
this way. To each his own.

So, I was wondering how every one else feels about this. Do you like to work
out with music or not ? Does it depend on the mood you're in ?

keith,

i have a couple cds i could loan you 8^) ! personnally, i don't pay much
attention to the gym noises, except i do like background music ( and, again,
yes! just about any kind will do)

i really prefer the sounds of outdoors while walking, running, hiking, climbing,
(biking); now all i need to do is find a way to build an outdoor gym in ne that
would muffle out the cold but still let in the sounds.

The Gym I use to work out at, barely had anyone in there while I was
there. So other persons background noise was minimal. But tunage is a
must for me. I can't listen to just anything either. It's gotta be in
the metal/alternative/rock category. And if there happens to be a
aerobics class goin' on...I can handle the dance stuff. But country,
jazz or blues...ain't gonna cut it.

But now that I'm workin' out at home, I listen to what I want and as
    loud as I want! [^8=

As for more background noise, beware of the guy doin' deadlifts after
eating a burrito!!! Ya might wanna bring ear and nose plugs! [^;=

I enjoy having music on while I'm working out. Just so long
as it's not mellow, rap, or head-banging music, I don't mind.

As for the sounds in the gym, I always liked hearing the clank
of the weights, and the groans.
At Millennium, I love seeing/listening to the swinging heavy bags,
and I also enjoy watching people sweat.

personally,I don't really pay attention to any music when I'm working
out.I tend to try and concentrate more on what I'm doing.Ocassionally
I'll catch the odd tune and listen for a minute but more often than
not I'll just put my head down and go for it!

1322.6I like my own musicHOTLNE::CORMIERWed Mar 19 1997 16:1315
I'm of the 'headphones and my own music' ilk. I have my own rhythm, my
own pace, for working out. If I'm at the gym and a lot of people I know
are there, I tend to blab and take way too long between sets. It also
helps me space out when doing cardio stuff. Sometimes I have my
aerobics tapes on, so I can work on a new routine. I don't want to
inflict this dancey crap on the entire gym, so I use the headphones.
I try not to look intimidating or unapproachable. I hope my friends
know they can tap me on the shoulder (please, NOT when I have a bar
over my head!!!) if they want to talk to me.
True confession time : Sometimes I just plain don't want to talk to
ANYBODY. I'm in a bad mood, I've had a bad day, or I don't feel
especially friendly. I put the headphones on, but there is no music
playing. I imagine those days I look pretty much like a thunder cloud,
because nobody EVER talks to me, headphones or not ; )

Over the years I have bounced from no music to gotta have music. I
even tried the headphone approach, but always ended up trying to
figuire out what to do with my walkman and abandoned that.

I guess in the final analysis I just don't pay attention to it at all.

I do however, keep a countdown watch. I set it for 1 minute intervals
and after each set hit it. No matter who is chatting with me, the
minute that watch goes off, I am back at the weights.

should be in ILIW, but: i just love when there are more rude people out there
than i counted on! mean people suck, but rude people just take the flippin cake!

i confess: please don't interrupt me unless i'm wandering on a break, keep
comments short and quick, continous blabber, etc is done at the end.

Ah... These would be the same people that shake thier head and go "tch, tch" in
another note in this conference?

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

i was supporting rude people, everyone should now that i don't take any sh!t.

didn't realize i needed to put the obilgatory appropriate 'smile' face after it
(which i don't know which one it is, anyway). i'm a nice person, just getting
too old to put up with a lot of people's bs thus i'm found to be rude a goodly
percent of the time.

why do you think they call me ogre?!?!?!

Just checking. Thought for a minute you might be losing your touch. Am
relieved to see that's not the case. ;-)

The gym that I workout at plays some heavy metal music for legs, rock n
roll for chest and arms. Reggae for shoulders and back.:)

I don't mind the music as long as its no too loud so you can't
concentrate on you workout. No music is also fine with me.
I don't mind a quick hello while in between sets but when its time
to continue the workout I don't want someone talking to me about
last nights football game or how much they enjoyed thier vacation.

I also like the serious gyms over the fluffy health spa's
The right kind of atmospher makes for a better workout
Unfortunately, my membership has run out and I've been working
out at home the last 2 weeks and it may be a while until I can
    afford to sign up again.

1322.14Sometimes this, sometimes that...CRLRFR::BLUNTThu Mar 20 1997 20:4729

I use music to distract my thought process. It isn't that I "try and
forget where I am," but I found that if I have silence (or background
gym noise ONLY) my concentration is constantly broken. Unfortunately,
this goes triple for "screamers" and "blabbers." If I'm partnering
or have someone spot, I want 'em QUIET so I can work on what I'm
working on, and not have to mentally pause and decode their statement.

My favorite time is when I have the scene to myself (yes, danger
abounds, but I _think_ I have some tricks to keep me somewhat safer),
and I get to select the music! The "joy" ends when the first
competitor shows up and wants to listen to something that just *BITES*
on the radio. From then on, my workout is dung, and my mood is ruined
for the rest of the day...

I'm curious about STYLES of music. I tend to set a mood with it. When
I do an exercise (and I have NO idea why all the pull-down and rowing
exercises fit here) that needs a sort of wild, energetic music, I
listen to Zappa (usually Joe's Garage, heathern that I am). For chest
work (of all types), "surprising" or "explosive" or "violent" classical
music (Flight of the Valkyries, Anvil Chorus, 1812 Overture, and the
like) is best. However, I can NOT tolerate anything but soft- to
mild-rock for legs. If I'm "working off anger," turn it all off,
stand back and leave me alone. It is NOT a time to be a bother...

    Again, just curious...

rammit, rammit, rammit up the .... that's not from joe's garage, is it? alas,
frank zappa is one that has been banned from the presence of my family [and
they're always around] so i rarely get to listen to him anymore; always good for
a few chuckles [yes, i'm twisted as well as rude]

this is why i workout at home. no one to bother or be bother'ed with.
i can play whatever music i want, and as loud as i want.

the only drawback is lack of equipment.
besides, its just another place to see and be seen.

    Keith,

For me, its what I am doing for a routine on what night. I get cranked
on rock and roll, reggae, etc. I like the reggae cause the music goes
klink-ity clank, the weights go klink-ity clank, and by nights end, I
    am twiddling the dreds.:)

When I am cleaning and vaccuming the cruel spa, its classical, or some
old blues stuff. When there were folks working out with me, I use to
like that sound of people working out. Its a nice sound, I could hear
the sounds before I entered the spa. There is a whole-some thing about
those sounds. Like hearing kids playing in the neighborhood, or
    listening to a cat purr.
