3651.1 | Load and Dump over ATM are not Supported | GALVIA::thebe.ilo.dec.com::Rawlings | | Mon May 26 1997 12:04 | 14 |

Hi,
Can you be more specific about what protocols etc
you expect to run between the two systems?
If what you are aiming is is to have the DECNIS
load and/or dump across ATM you are out of luck.
Load and dump of the DECNIS are not supported over ATM.
Regards,
Mark Rawlings

3651.2 | Any other way to load a file ? | JGODCL::CLEEUW | | Wed May 28 1997 02:55 | 10 |
| Mark,
what I'm trying to do is to get a large file into the DECnis, via the
B1202's ATM link in oreder to check if this link is operating properly.
This should be a check for the verify of the repair of these B1202
boards.
If I interpret your response correctly then this loading of a file via
the aTM link is not supported ?
Is there another way that you know of, except the loopback test for the
B1202's ATM card, to check if the ATM link is OK ?
Regards - Cees

3651.3 | Pass traffic THROUGH the DECNIS not into it. | GALVIA::thebe.ilo.dec.com::Rawlings | | Wed May 28 1997 06:55 | 29 |

Cees,
I don't really understand what you are trying to achieve?
What I think I understanding is
a) You are repairing boards
b) You don't trust the onboard diagnostics
c) You want to pass files into/out of the
DECNIS and compare the two?
The way to test a reparied DECNIS/linecard
is to pass large files THROUGH it, not INTO it.
By passing files into the DECNIS you are limited by the
speed at which the MOP/BOOTP protocols run on the MPC.
(These are not highly optimised protocols). This type of
test does not provide much of a challenge to the linecard.
By passing files through the DECNIS using FTP or DECNet-Copy
you are more likely to get data through the system faster,
thus testing the Linecard/DECNIS more fully.
I would suggest that your testing should involve
passing data through the DECNIS/linecard, and not into it.

Mark

| Mark,
you are correct that I want to pass a file through the line card.
I would like to downline load the DECnis image via the ATM card into
the decnis itsself as part of the final testing for the ATM card.
We use such an approach for all line cards we repair so far and I would
like to know if this approach is also is possible for the ATM card and
if yes how correctly to set up the B1202 for it.
Cees.

3651.5 | Might be possible with MPC III | GALVIA::thebe.ilo.dec.com::Rawlings | | Wed Jun 04 1997 07:19 | 39 |

Cees,
OK, what you are doing is using the process of loading the
DECNIS image via a specific line-card to test that specific
line-card. You do not want to use the passing of traffic
*through* the DECNIS as the test.
The ATM linecard, and the new HSSI linecard, do not support
Loading of the System image at boot time, so this is not an
option on either MPC II, or III.
However, my understanding is that with the MPC III, there are
two regions of FLASH into which System images can be written.
It is possible to update the 'inactive' flash region whilst the
system is running, and to then re-boot using the new Flash region.
I have not performed this operation so I would suggest you read
the relevant documentation to work out
How to configure TFTP as the download protocol over
ATM Mult prot encapsulation
How to push an image to a specific flash region over
TFTP
How to make the updated flash region the region
used at the next reboot.
This will allow you to pass a DECNIS image through the
linecard under test, and to boot it as a test of it's
correctness.
This does imply that you have a fully booted and configured
DECNIS before you start.
Regards,
Mark.

3651.6 | use update and show commands | MARVIN::HIGGINSON | Peter Higginson DTN 830 6293, Reading UK | Wed Jun 04 1997 18:03 | 15 |

Just one thing to add to Mark's reply:
Provided you use the "update flash ..." command you
can then use the "show flash" console command to
check the correctness of the flash write since it
rechecks the sumcheck fields on the file and header
contents.
If you use "add flash ..." then the sumcheck is
computed after the transfer and you are unlikely
to spot any errors whatever you do.
