1040.0. "feedback to Microsoft?" by STARCH::HAGERMAN (Flames to /dev/null) Mon Apr 28 1997 21:55

Is there really some kind of feedback to the Exchange developers
from our "world's largest Exchange installation"? For example, not
being able to set the font for incoming messages is a major pain.
To whom do we send suggestions for improvements?

Doug,

I wouldn't hold your breath. I discovered a fairly major bug (you can't
log on) in Exchange V5.0 and Outlook 97. This currently prevents my
ExchangeLink tool and TeamLinks V3.0 from using these products. I reported
it to Microsoft about two months before the Exchange V5.0 launch and
they've still not responded.

I wouldn't fancy your chances much with a "cosmetic" change if they can't
even fix the infrastructure! It's nice to have an enterprise computing
alliance!!

Two months prior to launch of Exchange, the only thing
getting fixed was serious showstopper bugs.

1040.3hello, who's in charge?STARCH::HAGERMANFlames to /dev/nullTue Apr 29 1997 21:5519
Yes, but, if we're at least in theory a showcase for large
exchange installations, I would think that we would have a feedback
mechanism (presumably set up by the people who set up the
changeover) so we could get "real live feedback from a big
installation" back to them. I'm not asking for an immediate
fix, although it would be nice, I'm wondering whether there is
a link from Digital to Microsoft for this specific product.

If not, where's the beef in the claim that we get something out of
all this? I am trying very hard not to be cynical, but it would
be a lot easier if somebody who had some responsibility for all
this would enter a note saying "you can send comments to xxx and
they will be forwarded to Microsoft as a part of the official
    Digital large-system trial".

Otherwise it's just us individuals against MS, which doesn't sound
    hopeful...

Re: .2

I consider not being able to log on from a 16-bit application a show
stopper! Also, I reported the problem as soon as they made the code
available to me. What's the point of releasing it if they don't want to
know what's wrong with it?

Re: .3

Couldn't agree more! Do you have the influence to do anything about it?
I've discovered that I certainly haven't!

RE: .4

The release schedule for 5.0 was a mess. As soon as the
first RC went out, all changes/fixes were pretty frozen.
A true showstopper would be if the Win95/Winnt client
didn't work. Microsoft isn't much interested in 16-bit
apps so that probably doesn't constitute "showstopper"
status for them, especially if the V4.0 16-bit client works.
	(assuming here that it does)

Believe me, there were ALOT of beta testers p.o.'d at the
Exchange group for not releasing an RC2 kit and not putting
in some of the bug fixes they wanted. Microsoft was on a
mission with 5.0 to get it out the door asap.

These are all my opinions, gleamed from what little I know
of the workings of the Exchange group. (having met many
	of them)
