I purchased an ATari 520ST a few years ago, and recently moved to a PC (sorry, I wanted to be able to get SOME software, and besides, I am in sales, and my customer is Intel). I gave my old Atari to a friend who is handicapped, and am starting to feel guilty about doing it. He had never done much with computers before, and I thought this would be a good introduction for him. He caught on pretty quickly, however, he is now beginning to get frustrated, with the lack of software available. Is there a mail order house or listing of dealers who I could contact? I've looked here in Phoenix, and can't find anyone who has software (even software stores that advertise Atari STs). I'd also be interested in used software, and may actually prefer it, as my friend doesn't have a lot of money. He suffers from a disease of the nervous system, so a lot of typical games that require quick hand-eye coordination he can't really use. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. Thanks Bruce

See note 1391, Toad Computers. I haven't done business with them in a couple of years, but they use to do mailorder software. Bill PS. Bre software/shareware is listed in here someplace. I think they are still in business.
1403.2 | Look for PD/shareware | CECEHV::NAGEL_E | Erlend Nagel | Mon Mar 28 1994 02:55 | 11 |
re .0 I suggest your friend takes a good look at some of the software available on ftp-archives like atari.archive.umich.edu . There is lots of good software available. The PD and shareware available for the Atari is for many people the reason to stick to their atari's (at least for me it is). As for games, look for the puzzle games. Erlend.

I find that here in the UK we have access to a very large amount of good quality PD and Shareware software, from ftp sites, BBSs and PD/shareware libraries. The three main Atari magazines (Atari ST Review, Atari ST User and ST Format all carry cover-mounted disks which often include full commercial applications and programs, and are a good scource of reference for finding advertisements for PD/shareware libraries, many of whom ship overseas. There is a lot of software too on CompuServe, GeNIE, and on CIX here in the UK. I have heard a lot about a US magazine called 'Current Notes' which also carries adverts for PD/Shareware, and understand that Toad Computers carry a large range and perhaps can supply catalogues and pointers. 1403.4 | enough software on easynet | MUNSBE::BFALKENSTEIN | Tue Apr 12 1994 05:48 | 14
I personally don't have the feeling that there is a lack of software for Atari, at least in Germany there isn't. Meanwhile the 5th CD with Shareware and PD was published here (incl. the Gemini-CD from the US) within 4 months. I suggest scanning thru notes 9.* and download some software from the large libraries here on the easynet for your friend. Believe me, there is plenty of it! Cheers, Bernd |
